    • Scarlett Johansson and Miles Teller will star in ‘Paper Tiger.’
    • They replace Jeremy Strong and Anne Hathaway in the crime drama.
    • James Gray wrote and is about to start directing the movie.

It’s all change –– well, not quite all change… but some change for ‘Ad Astra’ writer/director James Gray, who is swapping out some hefty A-list names for some equally notable talent on his new crime movie ‘Paper Tiger.’

While back in November last year he had Adam Driver set to star alongside Anne Hathaway and Jeremy Strong (who appeared in his most recent directorial effort, the semi-autobiographical ‘Armageddon Time’), he’s down two actors, as Hathaway and Strong have since had to drop out for scheduling reasons.

Since the movie, as the below logline suggests, sees brothers getting into deep trouble with the Russian mob, we can only assume Strong decided he needed more time to become a Soviet crime boss in real life to prepare.

Still, Gray is pushing forward with a new lead duo to work opposite Driver –– Deadline brings word that Scarlett Johansson and Miles Teller will be taking over the roles, and cameras should be rolling next month in New Jersey.

The new movie, which Gray wrote, is described a tense and gritty story revolving around two brothers (we’d guess Teller and Driver) who pursue the American Dream — only to become entangled in a scheme that turns out to be too good to be true.

As they try to navigate their way through an ever-more dangerous world of corruption and violence, they find themselves and their family brutally terrorized by the Russian “Mafiya.” Their bond begins to fray, and betrayal — once utterly unthinkable — now becomes all too possible.

Johansson will be back on our screens this summer, leading ‘Jurassic World Rebirth’, playing a specialist who must lead a group of scientists and mercenaries to the island where the original Jurassic Park dinos were bred in search of medical resources.

The latest entry in the giant beastie franchise will stomp on to our screens on July 2nd.

On a very different scale (and wavelength) Johansson also has her latest collaboration with director Wes Anderson, ‘The Phoenician Scheme’, which will see theaters next month, June 6th.

And possibly even more excitingly, Johansson is making her directorial debut with drama ‘Eleanor the Great,’ which stars June Squibb in the story of a 900-year-old Floridian woman who moves to New York City for a fresh start. When Making new friends her age proves difficult, she unexpectedly befriends a 19-year-old student.

That movie, formerly known as ‘Eleanor, Invisible,’ also stars Erin Kellyman, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Jessica Hecht, and scored a deal with Sony Pictures Classics. It’ll make its world premiere at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.

What else is Miles Teller attached to?

Teller, whose past resume also includes the likes of ‘Whiplash,’ the 2011 version of ‘Footloose,’Spiderhead’ ‘Rabbit Hole,’ the less-than-loved 2015 take on ‘Fantastic Four’ and, most recently, Apple TV+ horror action thriller ‘The Gorge,’ is a busy, in-demand actor.

He has ‘Eternity’ on the way, a new A24 movie directed by David Freyne that also stars Callum Turner, Elizabeth Olsen and Da’Vine Joy Randolph.

It’s the story of how, after death, everybody gets one week to choose where to spend eternity. But for  main characters Joan, Larry, and Luke, it’s really a question of who to spend it with.

While the movie doesn’t have a set release date in place yet, it’s already drawing potential awards buzz.

Then there is ‘Michael,’ the musical biopic of superstar Michael Jackson, in which Teller plays John Branca, Jackson’s manager, lawyer and close friend. The movie currently has an October release window from Lionsgate, though there has been chatter about legal issues surrounding the depiction of one of his accusers in a sexual abuse case, and the potential for the movie to be split in two so as to cover the full breadth of Jackson’s story.

Outside of those, there is animated tale ‘The Ark and the Aardvark,’ in which Teller voices Gilbert, the titular creature, who is given the task of shepherding the animals on to Noah’s Ark.

And we know he’ll be part of Paul Downs Colaizzo’s ‘Winter Games,’ set in the high-stakes arena of the Winter Olympic Games, following a perpetually overlooked skier and a self-sabotaging hockey legend (Teller) who collide at their breaking points. Their unexpected connection threatens her chance for a medal and his shot at a comeback as they navigate romance and redemption in the Olympic Village.

Miles Teller plays Lt. Bradley "Rooster" Bradshaw in 'Top Gun: Maverick' from Paramount Pictures, Skydance and Jerry Bruckheimer Films.
Miles Teller plays Lt. Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw in ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ from Paramount Pictures, Skydance and Jerry Bruckheimer Films.

The actor is also attached to the long-developing third outing for the ‘Top Gun’ franchise, where he would reprise the role of Lt. Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw, AKA the son of Anthony Edwards’ Goose from the 1986 original.

More recently, it was announced via Deadline that Teller will lead the cast for quirky new music comedy ‘Possum Song,’ directed by ‘Sing Sing’s Greg Kwedar to follow his Oscar-nominated prison pic.

Written by Isaac Adamson, ‘Possum Song’ will follow Eddie (Teller), an overconfident Nashville star who is hiding a dark secret: He stole the songs for his hit debut album.

Now, with a new wife and a baby on the way, Eddie must write his follow-up solo or risk losing everything. But just when things seem most hopeless, Eddie discovers a musical genius in the form of a magical possum with whom he strikes a dangerous Faustian bargain.

FilmNation is backing the movie, and here’s what Ben Browning, the company’s president of motion pictures had to say about it:

“This is a one-of-a-kind film. Greg’s vision, Isaac’s hilarious script and the magnetic performance of Miles Teller will create the kind of cinematic ride that audiences are craving — with showstopping music, visceral shocks, possums, humor and emotion.”

There are a number of other projects on his To Do list, including crime thriller ‘Wild Game,’ ‘Bartali,’ another sporting tale (where Teller would here play champion cyclist Gino Bartali, who put his career on hold to fight in World War II) and Martin Scorsese’s wishlist project ‘The Life of Jesus,’ which also has Andrew Garfield attached but has still yet to shoot.

When will ‘Paper Tiger’ be in theaters?

Since we’re in the Cannes Film Festival zone (a little bit like The Twilight Zone, but with fewer gremlins ripping bits off plane wings), add this one to the list of titles up for sale to distributors.

Vincent Maraval and Kim Fox’s The Veterans are representing the international sales rights and CAA Media Finance is handling North American rights. With the movie still in sales limbo, we’ll have to wait to see which company picks it up and what date it assigns to the movie.

He’s tapped yet another person for the ensemble, which at this point appears to include half of the A-list phone book (kids, ask your parents on that one).

The most recent recruit is ‘The Bear’s Emmy winner Jon Bernthal who will be playing… Well, that would be telling. And we can’t tell you because, like everyone else in the secretive filmmaker’s latest opus, he has yet to reveal character details.

But here’s what we know so far…

What’s the story of Christopher Nolan’s next film?

Writer, director, and producer Christopher Nolan on the set of 'Oppenheimer.'
Writer, director, and producer Christopher Nolan on the set of ‘Oppenheimer.’

In December, after months of speculation and casting, we got official confirmation that the movie is an adaptation of ‘The Odyssey,’ as revealed by Universal in a twitter post:

“Christopher Nolan’s next film ‘The Odyssey’ is a mythic action epic shot across the world using brand new IMAX film technology. The film brings Homer’s foundational saga to IMAX film screens for the first time.”

‘The Odyssey’ is a classic piece of literature by Homer that is divided between 24 different books, preceded by ‘The Iliad.’

The ancient Greek poem is one of the foundational texts of Western literature. It tells the story of Odysseus, King of Ithaca, and his perilous journey home after the Trojan War, exploring themes of heroism, loyalty, cunning, and the struggle against divine will. The tale includes iconic episodes like his encounters with the Cyclops Polyphemus, the Sirens, and the witch-goddess Circe, culminating in his reunion with his wife, Penelope.

Historians and scholars date the poem to sometime between 750-650 BC. The first printed Greek version became available in 1488. In the centuries since, it has remained one of the most studied, adapted and parodied stories ever with adaptations including the 1911 silent film by Giuseppe de Liguoro, 1954’s ‘Ulysses’ with Kirk Douglas and the 2000 Coen brothers comedy ‘O Brother, Where Art Thou?

A more recent adaptation premiered this past December in theaters: ‘The Return,’ which stars Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Binoche and was directed by Uberto Pasolini. On limited release, it has so far earned less than a million dollars worldwide.

Universal will no doubt be hoping for a slightly higher return on Nolan’s film, since, according to reporter Jeff Sneider, his ‘Odyssey’ carries a hefty $250 million price tag. Compare that to ‘Oppenheimer,’ which he made for $100 million and ‘Tenet,’ which had a $205 million budget.

Still, given that ‘Oppenheimer’ brought in nearly a billion dollars (and continues to earn on home entertainment venues), there’s reason for confidence.

Who else is in the cast for Nolan’s latest project?

Robert Pattinson in 'Tenet'. Photo: Warner Bros.

Nolan has been locking down a wealth of talent for his latest movie. Matt Damon and Anne Hathaway, of course, are veterans of working with the director, having appeared in two other projects of his (both were in ‘Interstellar,’ while Hathaway had previously played Selina Kyle in ‘The Dark Knight Rises‘ and Damon was in ‘Oppenheimer.’

Then there’s Robert Pattinson, who graced ‘Tenet.’

And on the Nolan newcomer front, we have Tom Holland, Zendaya (even if they’re hardly strangers to co-starring together), Lupita Nyong’o and Charlize Theron.

It’s anyone’s guess at this point what role the various ensemble members will be playing, or indeed how faithful Nolan’s movie will end up being. Can we hope for a giant fantasy epic from the director?

Nolan is also writing and producing the film, reuniting with his longtime producing and life partner Emma Thomas, who won the Best Picture Oscar for ‘Oppenheimer’ alongside Nolan.

While the filmmaker had been based for years at Warner Bros., the company’s decision to put much of its 2020 slate on streaming saw him take his business elsewhere.

The rights to ‘Oppenheimer’ were put up for auction, a bidding battle that Universal ultimately won and reaped the rewards when the movie became a huge sensation.

Nolan was clearly happy without things worked out in collaboration with the studio, as he’s gone right back to it for this new project, which, like ‘Oppenheimer,’ will shoot in the IMAX format.

In addition to his occasional appearances on ‘The Bear’ (which as mentioned have won him praise and awards), Bernthal is known for a few key roles.

Also on TV, he broke out playing Frank Castle/The Punisher on Netflix’s ‘Daredevil’ and the ‘Punisher’ show that featured his character (he’ll be back in the role for new Disney+ series ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ in March).

And he also won fans as Shane Walsh on post-apocalyptic zombie series ‘The Walking Dead.’

On the big screen, he’s been in movies such as ‘The Wolf of Wall Street,’ ‘Fury,’ ‘Sicario,’ ‘Ford V Ferrari’ and ‘King Richard.’ He’ll reprise his role as Brax in ‘The Accountant 2,’ due out on April 25th.

For the last few months, we’ve been learning about ‘Oppenheimer’ director Christopher Nolan building the cast he wants for his next, much-anticipated project.

The likes of Matt Damon, Zendaya, Tom Holland and Anne Hathaway have all been reported as starring in the director’s new movie.

But despite all of that casting news, we’d yet to learn what it’s actually going to focus on. Rumors have swirled about everything from a vampire story or an adaption of cult UK TV series ‘The Prisoner’ (long since debunked) to a new film based on helicopter-focused thriller series ‘Blue Thunder’ (also shot down).

Just as he did with ‘Oppenheimer’ –– and even more so since that movie did nearly a billion dollars in business and won seven Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor (for star Cillian Murphy) ––– Christopher Nolan is able to attract big names for his new project.

And the latest to leap aboard –– per Deadline –– is Charlize Theron, most recently seen in ‘Fast X’ (and in an uncredited tiny cameo as the grown Furiosa in George Miller’s ‘Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga’).

She’s the newest bold face name to agree to appear for Nolan, marking the first time she’ll work with the director.

As with everything to do with Nolan, the title, plot and even genre are a mystery at this point. Nolan is not a man to release loglines easily, and his level of creative control means that, short of an unauthorized leak, no information will be out there until he’s ready.

There had been some chatter a few years ago about the writer/director looking at adapting cult British series ‘The Prisoner’ for the big screen, but this is apparently not that.

More recent rumors have pointed to a film inspired by movie and TV seriesBlue Thunder,’ which was about a sophisticated police helicopter in Los Angeles, but that has since been shot down (the rumor, not the helicopter).

As with lots of big movies that end up boasting giant, star-studded casts, there is a period of time known as the “drip feed” casting era, where sites break word of big names signing on to the project (or at least rumored, often leaked as a way for agents to push for better deals).

Oppenheimer’ director Christopher Nolan’s next movie is now at that stage, and we’ve already heard about the likes of Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Zendaya and Anne Hathaway joining his cast list.

The Hollywood Reporter now brings word that ‘A Quiet Place: Day One’ and ‘Black Panther’ franchise stalwart Lupita Nyong’o is the latest addition.

More recent rumors have pointed to a film inspired by movie and TV series ‘Blue Thunder,’ which was about a sophisticated police helicopter in Los Angeles. Yet Deadline’s sources say that idea is also off the mark (unless it’s a double bluff!)

After seeing success with the ‘Quiet Place’ prequel movie earlier this year and then DreamWorks Animation’s ‘The Wild Robot,’ the ever-booked and busy Nyong’o has a few projects either in development or about to kick off shooting.

She’s part of the cast for spacecraft-stealing comedy drama ‘Lunik Heist,’ which also stars Jared Leto and John Mulaney. ‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’ co-director Kemp Powers is overseeing that one.

Then there’s UFC drama ‘Strawweight,’ which has Chloë Grace Moretz also in its cast and James M. Johnston directing.

And you’ve got to figure if Ryan Coogler truly is figuring out a third ‘Black Panther’ movie (as hinted at by no less an actor than Denzel Washington recently), that Nyong’o would be back for that.

  • ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ Sequel in Early Development

    • Disney is in early development on a ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ sequel.
    • Writer Aline Brosh McKenna is scripting the new movie.
    • Meryl Streep and Emily Blunt may return, but Anne Hathaway is yet to be confirmed.

One of the movies where there is lot of chatter about a potential sequel, but little actual forward movement, has just shifted into more likely territory.

After years of rumors regarding a follow-up to hit comedy ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ (which starred Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway and, in a breakout role, Emily Blunt), Disney reportedly now has a sequel in the early development stage.

According to Puck (and since confirmed by the likes of Deadline), original screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna is writing the script, with producer Wendy Finerman aboard and director David Frankel in talks.

While Streep and Blunt, are reportedly close to a potential deal to return, Hathaway (who has been outspoken about not being convinced it could work) is not yet, But the trio recently reunited at the SAG awards and made plenty of references to the original.

Adapted by McKenna from Lauren Weisberger’s novel and directed by Frankel, the 2006 original follows Andy Sachs (Hathaway), a recent journalism graduate who moves to New York City and lands a job as a junior assistant to Miranda Priestly (Streep), the powerful and demanding editor-in-chief of high-fashion magazine Runway, with Blunt as Emily, Priestly’s primary aide.

Andy initially struggles with the high-pressure environment and Miranda’s relentless demands but gradually adapts, gaining confidence and style. As she becomes more involved in her work, she faces personal challenges, including a strained relationship with her boyfriend, Nate (Adrian Grenier), and ethical dilemmas about the fashion industry’s values.

What would the new movie be about?

Anne Hathaway in 'The Devil Wears Prada'.

Assuming the cast can be all be convinced to return (is that truckloads of cash being driven to their respective homes we hear?), the sequel’s plot would reportedly pick up the story with Priestly still the head of Runway, but the magazine has endured the financial headwinds of contemporary publishing and is in a diminished state.

Blunt’s one-time assistant would now be an executive at a luxury brand conglomerate that advertises with Runway.

We’ll have to see if this one actually makes it out of the development phase, but Disney is rarely one to let an opportunity like this go to waste.

    • Creator Lee Sung Jin and his team have written the scripts.

Though it was a little surprising, given that Netflix’s ‘Beef’ was entered for –– and won a slew of awards in –– the limited series category, we’ve known for a while that creator Lee Sung Jin has found an idea that works for him, and he and his writers had been busy on a new batch of scripts.

And they’re going the anthology route, focusing on a fresh group of characters.

Yet while the hope had been to lure Anne Hathaway and Jake Gyllenhaal to star in the next run, those negotiations have not worked out.

Still, according to Deadline, the ‘Beef’ team has pivoted instead to target Oscar Isaac and Carey Mulligan, who are in talks to star opposite the already confirmed Charles Melton and Cailee Spaeny.

Netflix has yet to confirm anything about the new season –– beyond the potential existence of a new season. All that we’ve heard so far is that it’ll be focused on feuding couple.

Which means that, assuming they sign on, Isaac and Mulligan would play one side of the argument, with Melton and Spaeny on the other.

Isaac and Mulligan are well known names –– the former was seen in Denis Villeneuve’s ‘Dune’ and heard in ‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’. Coming up, he’ll voice Jesus in animated movie ‘King of Kings’, appear in Guillermo del Toro’s take on ‘Frankenstein’ and return for ‘Spider-Verse’ sequel ‘Beyond the Spider-Verse’.

Mulligan nabbed an Oscar nomination for her role in Bradley Cooper’s ‘Maestro’ and was seen opposite Adam Sandler in sci-fi movie ‘Spaceman’. She’s lent her voice to new Laika animated movie ‘Wildwood’ and will show up in British comedy ‘The Ballad of Wallis Island’.

Melton, who was best known for ‘Riverdale’, broke out big last year in movie terms with ‘May December’, for which he was nominated for a slew of awards.

Spaeny, meanwhile, has had some solid roles, including in ‘Pacific Rim: Uprising’ and ‘Vice’ (plus TV series such as ‘Mare of Eastown’ and ‘Devs‘), but has earned rave reviews for her performance as Priscilla Presley in Sofia Coppola’s ‘Priscilla’. She was recently on screen in ‘Civil War’ and has ‘Alien: Romulus’ due in August.

Netflix has yet to give this one a formal greenlight, but production company A24 will no doubt hoping it can now get moving.

While we could certainly see a way forward for the characters in ‘Beef’ Season 1, it would appear that Netflix and creator Lee Sung Jin are going the anthology route for the series, taking a leaf out of Ryan Murphy’s ‘American Horror Story’/‘American Crime Story’ shows or Noah Hawley’s ‘Fargo’, which both switch out characters and stories between seasons.

But the idea of more ‘Beef’ is hardly a shock, since the first season has been scooping up trophies left, right and center, including at this past weekend’s Screen Actors Guild Awards. And from the sounds of Deadline’s new report, the cast is set to get even starrier.

Details are extremely scarce on the new season, which Jin and his writers have apparently already worked on. But apparently it’ll pivot from characters feuding one-on-one to couples clashing.

That’s certainly a nice twist on the concept, and opens up possibilities for the future –– will we see families fight? Companies? Countries?

While Deadline cautions that talks are at a very early stage and deals have most certainly not been locked in place yet, word is that Jin is courting Anne Hathaway and Jake Gyllenhaal (who already played a troubled couple in 2010 movie ‘Love & Other Drugs’) alongside Charles Melton and Cailee Spaeny.

Hathaway and Gyllenhaal need little introduction, as they’re established stars. Melton, who was best known for ‘Riverdale’, broke out big last year in movie terms with ‘May December’, for which he was nominated for a slew of awards.
