Luca Guadagnino’s ‘Challengers’ was one of our favorite movies of 2024, which makes it strange to say that ‘After The Hunt’ might end up on our list of the worst films of 2025. This muddled drama, set in the elite halls of academia at Yale, focuses on a ‘he said/she said’ situation that is ripped right out of the headlines – of 2017, when #MeToo was dominating the cultural conversation.

But while the topic is certainly just as relevant and important now as it was a few years ago, ‘After The Hunt’ doesn’t add anything interesting to the conversation. Instead, Nora Garrett’s screenplay pushes a bunch of increasingly unlikable characters around on a chessboard of vagueness masquerading as ambiguity, while Guadagnino shoots it as if he’s not looking through the lens half the time. It’s a disappointingly sloppy effort in which even the blaring, burping score – by the usually spot-on Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross – sounds off.

    Story and Direction

‘After The Hunt’ kicks off with a credit sequence that immediately draws attention to itself by being done in the same font, with the same layout, that Woody Allen has used for his films for 50 years. Does Guadagnino see his film as a homage to some of Allen’s upper-class social dramas? Is he trolling Allen or Allen’s cancellation from the culture at large? It’s hard to tell.

Either way, the film opens during a party being given by Yale assistant philosophy professor Alma Imhoff (Julia Roberts) and her psychiatrist husband Frederick (Michael Stuhlbarg) for faculty and student friends, with Alma clearly the center of attention for fellow professor Hank Gibson (Andrew Garfield) and pupil Maggie Resnick (Ayo Edebiri). After a spirited if somewhat caustic night of drinking and long-winded debate, Hank escorts Maggie home – and Maggie turns up outside Alma’s door the next day, saying that he assaulted her.

Maggie seems shocked when Alma doesn’t quite provide the full-throated support she expected, given Alma’s ‘history’ – a point we’ll go back to over and over again until it eventually comes out – and Hank later gives Alma (who is also his former lover, to the surprise of no one watching) his side of the story: that he called out Maggie – who’s gay, Black, and lives with a trans lawyer, just to make sure all the boxes are checked — for plagiarism on a paper and this is her way of getting revenge.

This places the remote, chilly, deeply private Alma squarely in the middle of a classic ‘believe women’ scenario – except it doesn’t quite seem like she does. But she’s also not squarely in Hank’s corner either. And none of them seem on the level about what really happened or how they feel about it. Alma and Hank are both competing for a tenured slot, by the way, and Alma is occasionally gripped by intense stomach pains. The relentless conniving, contriving, and jockeying on all sides only seem to prove that everyone’s a jerk, with no moral compass, and that we all basically suck at being decent human beings.

At least that’s the impression one walks out of ‘After The Hunt’ with, which drives home its point by being one of the more irritating films to watch in recent memory. Guadagnino’s camera droops inexplicably from the actors’ faces to their hands while they’re talking, as if looking for some secret code. Some shots are done in extreme close-up, with the actor talking directly into the camera – a jarring and purposeless trick in this scenario. The whole film feels airless, grimy, and ugly – even Guadagnino’s other 2024 movie, ‘Queer,’ was better visually than this.

Is it all supposed to mean something, or is Guadagnino just drawing attention to the fact that this is – like the stories that Alma, Maggie, and Hank all may or may not construct about themselves – a fictional narrative? We even hear the director say “Cut!” at the very end of the film, suggesting that he’s not trying to get at any real psychological, social, or emotional truth. And the movie doesn’t feel like that either.

    Cast and Performances

Despite the disjointed script and characters they’re given to work with, Julia Roberts and Andrew Garfield do fine work here. Roberts gives a performance that is both mysterious and somehow intimate, and effectively conveys Alma’s increasing terror as her carefully woven world begins to unravel around her. Garfield is similarly nuanced, making Hank both somehow sympathetic and yet totally the kind of arrogant, brash, rock-star academic who thinks he floats above the rules.

The movie’s secret weapon may be Michael Stuhlbarg, who exhibits patience, wariness, exasperation, and his own quirky, embittered set of values as Frederik – although he can be an intrusive boor with the best of them as well. The weakest link here is the gifted comedian Edebiri, who exhibits flashes of Maggie’s inner rage and cynicism, but who can no more carry this weighty material than she could the flat ‘Opus’ from earlier this year (the one in which John Malkovich attempted to play a rock god).

From time to time in ‘After The Hunt,’ Guadagnino puts a loudly ticking clock on the soundtrack as just another signifier that something dreadfully urgent and important is happening. But like everything else in the film, it’s instead merely annoying. And what exactly is happening anyway? Is the film indicting cancel culture, the #MeToo movement itself, or the insular bubble of academic life?

It’s all too incoherent to get a straight answer, and no one seems to know (except maybe Stuhlbarg) whether to play this as serious drama or histrionic soap opera. Either way, ‘After The Hunt’ is an empty mess that tries to say too much about a lot of different topics, and ends up saying nothing at all.

‘After The Hunt’ receives a score of 40 out of 100.

Luca Guadagnino is one of those directors who can always attract solid talent, and often seems to work with rising stars.

For his latest, ‘Artificial’, the filmmaker already has quite the crop either locked down or circling –– Andrew Garfield, Monica Barbaro, Jason Schwartzman Cooper Koch and ‘Anora’ breakout Yura Borisov among them.

Nothing has been official released yet, but Guadagnino reportedly considered several scripts before landing on Simon Rich’s (‘An American Pickle’) about the wild true story surrounding OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.

He co-founded OpenAI, but in the fall of 2023, after mounting safety concerns regarding AI, and reports of abusive behavior, was ousted as the head of the company by his board.

Five days later, after a revolt, he was reinstated in a story reminiscent of the return of Steve Jobs to Apple.

If all goes as planned, Garfield will play Altman, Barbaro will be chief technology officer Mira Murati, and Borisov has the role of Ilya Sutskever, a co-founder who led the movement to get rid of Altman.

We don’t yet know who Hoffman or Koch will be, but Barinholtz is in talks to be Elon Musk, who… well, does he really need an introduction these days after the last few months. At least it’s a good casting choice: Barinholtz is good at playing smug weirdos.

Along with Garfield, the new project marks a reunion for Guadagnino and Amazon, having made ‘After the Hunt’ and last year’s sizzling tennis drama ‘Challengers’ for the company.

What else is Luca Guadagnino working on?

As talked about above, the director had been busy developing ‘Sgt. Rock,’ which adapts the DC Comics character for the big screen. Daniel Craig reportedly considered the lead, but Guadagnino was locking in on Colin Farrell to star.

Yet weather conditions have reportedly stymied the production, and the aim is to have it rolling cameras next year –– though not with Guadagnino aboard.

Beyond that, he has a variety of other potential movies waiting in the wings, including a new adaptation of ‘American Psycho’ and romantic drama ‘Separate Rooms.’

When will ‘Artificial’ be in theaters?

Though ‘Artificial’ is clearly coming together fairly quickly, Amazon MGM Studios has yet to hand out a release date for the movie.

Guadagnino’s latest, the aforementioned ‘After The Hunt,’ which stars Garfield alongside Julia Roberts and Chloë Sevigny, is scheduled to arrive in theaters on October 17th, signaling a potential awards contender.

    • Aaron Sorkin is writing and directing the follow-up.
    • It’s not a direct sequel to the 2010 David Fincher Oscar winner, but continues focusing on Facebook.

Around a month ago, we learned that, after fiddling with ideas for a while, Aaron Sorkin had come up with a way to follow up 2010’s ‘The Social Network’, which won three Oscars, including one for Sorkin’s screenplay, and chronicled the difficult birth of Facebook.

Now, with the result widespread (and one of the key players in social media harm), Sorkin is developing ‘The Social Network II’ –– not a direct sequel, but instead something peeling back the layers of Facebook and its parent company Meta.

According to Deadline, Sorkin and Sony are confident in the material to begin putting out feelers to actors, with white-hot names Jeremy Allen White (a multiple award winner for ‘The Bear’) and ‘Anora’ Oscar winner Mikey Madison at the top of the list.

No formal offers have been made to either actor, so watch this space to see if they do jump aboard.

The Hollywood Reporter has learned that, assuming their deals close, Madison would be Frances Haugen, the data engineer-turned-whistleblower who went to the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Wall Street Journal with her information. White would play the former WSJ tech reporter who leads the breaking of the Facebook files.

And that’s not all… Jeremy Strong is also reportedly under consideration, and might end up playing debated Facebook creator (and current boss) Mark Zuckerberg this time around, replacing Jesse Eisenberg.

The 2010 original, which as mentioned had David Fincher calling the shots, looked at the difficult evolution of Facebook from college ranking system created –– again, there’s debate as the movie suggests –– by Zuckerberg, played there by Eisenberg.

‘The Social Network’ charts Zuckerberg and his system’s rise to ubiquity and the people who ended up suing for their share of the profits, including the Winklevoss twins and old college friend Eduardo Saverin (Andrew Garfield).

A huge hit with audiences and critics, it earned $226 million at the global box office.

Talking on a live edition of ‘The Town’ Podcast, Sorkin announced that his concern regarding how Facebook’s system has poisoned politics on the personal and national level led him to start work on a new script, which while not a direct sequel to ‘The Social Network’, would follow up on the low-key fears that were subtextual in the original.

Here’s what Sorkin told hosts Matthew Belloni and Peter Hamby:

“Look, yeah, I’ll be writing about this. I blame Facebook for January 6. Facebook has been, among other things, tuning its algorithm to promote the most divisive material possible. Because that is what will increase engagement. That is what will get you to — what they call inside the hallways of Facebook — ‘the infinite scroll’ … There’s supposed to be a constant tension at Facebook between growth and integrity. There isn’t. There’s just growth. If Mark Zuckerberg woke up tomorrow morning and realized there is nothing you can buy for $120 billion that you can’t buy for $119 billion dollars, ‘So how about if I make a little bit less money? I will tune up integrity and tune down growth.’ Yes, you can do that by switching a one to a zero.”

Asked what exactly he’d be focused on, he told the audience that they’d have to buy a movie ticket to find that out.

We do know a little more now, though: Sorkin’s screenplay for the new movie explores the story behind the Wall Street Journal‘s ‘The Facebook Files’, an explosive series of articles published in October 2021 that exposed the inner workings of — and multiple harms caused by — the world’s largest social network.

Back in 2010, ‘The Social Network’ made a big impact on movies and society in general. It charted the controversial rise of Facebook and the even more dicey story of creator –– there’s still debate about that –– Mark Zuckerberg, who continues to be a divisive figure.

That movie earned plenty of praise and awards (more on that below), and now a follow-up is in the works.

Unlike the original, which had director David Fincher overseeing it, this time writer Aaron Sorkin is looking to pull double duty, with Deadline reporting that he hit upon a new concept after looking into the social media platform’s impact on politics and society, and being inspired by a series of articles in the Wall Street Journal.

Sony, which released the original movie, is on board for this one.

If you’re Luca Guadagnino, you pivot, go after a very different subject matter and look to work again with an actor who starred in your latest movie –– in this case, Andrew Garfield, who just starred for the director in the upcoming ‘After the Hunt.’

Yes, according to Deadline, Guadagnino, who had been in the midst of setting up DC offering ‘Sgt. Rock,’ has responded to that movie being pushed for a year by switching to a new script called ‘Artificial,’ and he has Garfield in early talks to star alongside ‘A Complete Unknown’s Monica Barbaro and ‘Anora’s Yura Borisov.

The trade site cautions that while Amazon MGM Studios is eagerly putting the pieces together, none of the deals are yet closed. Still, hopes are high for this one to be shooting in the summer in San Francisco and Italy and David Heyman –– the ‘Harry Potter’ producer who recently agreed to oversee the Bond franchise alongside Amy Pascal –– is also attached to this.

If all goes as planned, Garfield is eyeing the role of Altman, Barbaro will be chief technology officer Mira Murati, and Borisov could nab the role of Ilya Sutskever, a co-founder who led the movement to get rid of Altman.

Along with Garfield, the new project marks a reunion for Guadagnino and Amazon, having made ‘After the Hunt’ and last year’s sizzling tennis drama ‘Challengers’ for the company.

And the story of a controversial tech executive is not exactly unknown to Garfield, who famously appeared in ‘The Social Network.’

Yet weather conditions have reportedly stymied the production, and the aim is to have it rolling cameras next year.

Beyond that, he has a variety of other potential movies waiting in the wings, including a new adaptation of ‘American Psycho’ and romantic drama ‘Separate Rooms.’

He was also considering a ‘Lord of the Flies’ adaptation, but that has vanished into development limbo.

Where else can we see Andrew Garfield?

Besides ‘After the Hunt,’ Garfield will next be seen in children’s movie ‘The Magic Faraway Tree,’ adapted from the Enid Blyton novel about a family discovering a magical tree with eccentric residents. That movie has yet to conjure up a release date.

He’s attached to various other projects, including ‘Voyagers,’ which would see him play astronomer, planetary scientist and TV host Carl Sagan in the story of the romance between Sagan and his wife, Ann Druyan.

There’s also ‘Wild Things,’ the Apple TV+ biodrama series about iconic Vegas performers Siegfried and Roy, who famously employed white tigers in their act and, for one of them at least, infamously fell afoul of that concept. Garfield will star as Roy opposite Jude Law as Siegfried.

Also on his list? ‘The Rage,’ a new Paul Greengrass movie set during the Peasants’ Revolt, a major uprising that took part across large parts of England in 1381 in response to socio-economic and political tensions and high taxation.

Finally, hopes remain that he’ll reunited with his ‘Silence’ director Martin Scorsese for the filmmaker’s passion project ‘The Life of Jesus.’

What other projects does Monica Barbaro have lined up?

Barbaro, who had a breakout role in ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ and scored an Oscar nomination playing Joan Baez in ‘A Complete Unknown,’ will be back on small screens next month in the second season of ‘FUBAR,’ the Netflix action comedy in which she stars alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger.

She also has a role in Bart Layton’s adaptation of Don Winslow novel ‘Crime 101,’ which also features Chris Hemsworth and Mark Ruffalo.

When will ‘Artificial’ be on screens?

Given that the deals are still being hammered out, Amazon MGM has yet to give this one a release date.

Guadagnino’s latest, the aforementioned ‘After The Hunt,’ which stars Garfield alongside Julia Roberts and Chloë Sevigny, is scheduled to arrive in theaters on October 17th, signaling a potential awards contender.

Jude Law and Andrew Garfield have signed up to executive produce and star in ‘Wild Things.’

No, don’t do a double-take: this does not mean they’ll be getting steamy in a remake of the pulpy 1998 thriller that saw Neve Campbell and Denise Richards as sultry students.

Instead, the actors are attached to play Vegas legends Siegfried and Roy, the flamboyant famous performers known for big-scale magic tricks and the inclusion of animals in their shows –– hence the name of the new series, ‘Wild Things.’

Not to sound morbid, but it’s more apt to say who were Siegfried and Roy.

Siegfried Fischbacher (who died in 2021) and Roy Horn (born Uwe Ludwig Horn, who passed in 2020) were German-American entertainers who performed an animal-based magic show together as Siegfried & Roy.

They met in 1959 while both were working on a cruise ship and then began to perform together on ships and in European clubs and theaters.

In 1967, they were invited to begin performing in Las Vegas. Starting in 1990, they headlined a show at hotel and casino The Mirage. Romantic partners as well as professional, they become best known for their flamboyant, Liberace-style costumes and use of white lions and tigers in their acts; Siegfried was the magician, Roy the animal trainer.

By 1999, the show had grossed $500 million and they were the highest-paid entertainers in Las Vegas. After 5,750 performances, their career ended in 2003 when Horn was critically injured by a tiger during a performance.

Horn died from COVID-19 and Fischbacher passed from complications pancreatic cancer.

Written, showrun and executive produced by John Hoffman (‘Only Murders in the Building’), the eight-episode, hour-long series tells the wild ride relationship tale of two of the greatest showman-magicians in history who, along with their white tigers, are tasked with turning Sin City into a family-friendly destination.

The duo push the concept of illusion versus reality to the extreme, personally and professionally, until tragedy reframes and opens a mystery surrounding their last fateful Las Vegas show.

Law will star as Siegfried and Garfield will star as Roy, and the series is set to go into production this fall.

Matt Shakman (director of ‘WandaVision’ and the upcoming ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’) will direct the pilot and also serve as executive producer. Law and Garfield are aboard to produce alongside Brian Grazer’s Imagine Entertainment.

This new show is drawn from Apple Original Podcast ‘Wild Things: Siegfried & Roy,’ which premiered in 2022, and was the first, compelling in-depth podcast series about the most famous, controversial magicians in history, who were widely misunderstood, frequently satirized and feverishly criticized.

The podcast goes behind the velvet curtain to examine the pop culture icons, lionized by a global fan base for more than 40 years, to deconstruct the illusions they created, the empire they constructed, and what really happened on the night that a tiger attack ended their reign.

Documentary filmmaker Steven Leckart, who wrote, narrated, and executive produced the podcast, will also produce the series alongside Tony Leondis, Kathy Ciric and Will Malnati, who conceived the original podcast.

The movie is due in theaters on October 17th.

    • ‘Project Hail Mary’ and more were showcased at Amazon MGM’s CinemaCon presentation.
    • There was news of ‘Masters of the Universe’ and Luca Guadagno’s latest.
    • Ryan Gosling, Ben Affleck and more showed up to support their movies.

Amazon has popped up at CinemaCon a couple of times in the past, but usually partnered with one of the big theatrical studios. But as Amazon MGM Studios plans to hugely expand its cinematic footprint (having also joined the Motion Picture Association), it is also making its big, proper debut at the movie trade show.

Given the recent giant news about Amazon gaining full control of the Bond franchise, there was plenty of expectation of some announcement about that, though even with the hiring of producers Amy Pascal and David Heyman to oversee the company’s plans, unless the deal to bring them in was sealed a lot earlier than reported, was it likely that we’d have anything beyond the company touting the new arrangement?

It was an unusually late schedule time-wise, presumably because the likes of Sony, Warners, Disney and co. had snapped up the prime spots. But as a statement of intent from the new kid on the block, it had to deliver.

So let’s explore what was actually revealed…

    Project Hail Mary

The latest Phil Lord and Chris Miller joint (that isn’t a ‘Spider-Verse’ offering) is this adaptation of ‘The Martian’ author Andy Weir’s book.

It’s another tale of a reluctant astronaut, this one played by Ryan Gosling, who has to try and save the Earth. The presentation kicked off with the impressive first teaser for the sci-fi movie. Set to Harry Styles’ ‘Sign of the Times,’ it looks very different to other Lord/Miller movies, but also great.

Gosling plays a schoolteacher recruited by Sandra Huller to save the planet, which is threatened by a dying sun. “You want the right stuff. I’ve got the wrong stuff! I put the NOT in astronaut. I can’t even moonwalk!” he claims amusingly (it’s even funnier coming from the man who played Neil Armstrong in ‘First Man.’)

Mike Hopkins, Head of Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios took the stage to announce that the company is committed to theatrical releases, with 14 working titles being readied for next year and 15 planned for 2027. They’re apparently ahead of schedule.

And the ‘Project Hail Mary’ team –– Lord, Miller and Gosling –– arrived on stage to caution the crowd that all the footage was work in progress, with Gosling singling cinematographer Greig Fraser (who also worked on the ‘Dune’ movies) out for particular praise.

Lord and Miller explained how much of themselves they poured into the movie, the biggest project they’ve ever worked on.

Gosling: “This is why we go to the movies, and I’m not just saying it because I’m in it. I’m ALSO a producer on this movie.”

    Says Miller:

“Thank you for seeing movies on the big screen with the most weird and disturbing popcorn buckets imaginable.” Can’t wait to see their ‘Hail Mary’ bucket…

‘Project Hail Mary Blasts’ off in theaters on March 20th, 2026.

    BCcUFMWbBHOY3zv0jhK5J4

There was more talk of other future projects, including the Michael B. Jordan starring/directed ‘The Thomas Crown Affair’ and ‘Verity,’ the romantic thriller adapted from Colleen Hoover’s novel and directed by Michael Showalter.

‘The Thomas Crown Affair’ apparently “has a few unexpected, modern twists.” Bradford Young is the cinematographer on the movie, and ‘Black Panther’s Ruth E. Carter will handle the costumes.

‘Verity,’ meanwhile, had a teaser to show, featuring the song ‘Fade Into You’ by Mazzy Star, and introduced by a fun video by the cast.

‘Verity’ has a May15th, 2026 release date set, while ‘Thomas Crown’ is too early in the process to score its own slot yet.

    Next!

    After The Hunt

The latest drama from the prolific Luca Guadagnino stars Julia Roberts and Andrew Garfield and follows a professor whose career is derailed by scandal. Andrew Garfield’s character is accused of assaulting Ayo Edebiri’s, and it becomes major news after Julia Roberts’ character, an attorney, takes on his case.

Edebiri and Garfield showed up on stage with Guadagnino, and Garfield praised his director, who he said he’d wanted to work with for 15 years.

The first footage from the movie was screened for the audience via a trailer.

‘After The Hunt’ will head to theaters on October 17th.

    Next up?

    Mercy

The new Chris Pratt sci-fi pic ‘Mercy’ was the next to be spotlighted, with the first footage of the movie, directed by Timur Bekmambetov.

It’s a blend of courtroom drama and action where an AI program serves as the judge, jury, and executioner. Pratt has 90 minutes to prove he didn’t kill his wife, using all technology available.

Since the trailer introduces the audiences to a high-tech chair where Pratt’s character is confined, what better way to promote than by having Pratt in said chair on stage for the presentation, jokingly forced to say a proper thank you to the assembled exhibitors, lest he had to Uber home.

Co-starring Rebecca Ferguson, the film will be in cinemas on January 23rd, 2026.

    Followed by…

Three Bags Full: A Sheep Detective Movie

Lest you start checking again whether we’ve turned the clock back to April Fool’s Day, this is in fact a very real movie, directed by ‘Despicable Me’ veteran Kyle Balda, and is a live-action murder mystery where the detectives are sheep.

The audience reaction was laughter at first –– it is a fun concept –– but the cast, including Hugh Jackman, Emma Thompson, Hong Chau, Nicholas Braun and Nicholas Galitzine, is certainly impressive, and the tone of the footage a lot of fun.

‘Three Bags Full: A Sheep Detective Movie’ will venture into cinemas on February 20th, 2026.

    On to…

    Crime 101

‘American Animals’ director Bart Layton’s new crime thriller stars Chris Hemsworth, Halle Berry, Monica Barbaro and Barry Keoghan, and sees a detective tracking a jewel thief.

Director Layton, who says that from the very beginning, this movie was written, imagined, planned and dreamed for the big screen, is joined by Hemsworth and Berry on stage to introduce a trailer.

Layton also says he wrote Keoghan’s part as a dirt bike-riding maniac especially for him.

Hemsworth added that they wanted to make a gripping and thought provoking thriller that really captures L.A.

‘Crime 101’ has yet to lock down a release date.

That was followed by a quick look at new hitman movie ‘Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother,’ directed by Bassam Tariq and starring Mahershala Ali.

    jXNSbw9WmAl9vHSP1xatb7

    Then it was on to…

    ‘Is God Is’

Director Aleshea Harris makes her cinematic debut with an adaptation of her play.

Vivica A. Fox took the stage with some of the other cast to show a trailer.

It’s the story of two little girls and their mother who were the victims of an arson attack at the hands of their father (Sterling K. Brown). Their mother’s dying wish? That the two girls, now adults, kill their father.

It’s described as a Greek tragedy crossed with Afropunk and the classic spaghetti Western. The cast also includes Janelle Monáe, Erika Alexander, Kara Young and Mallori Johnson.

After that, head of film Courtenay Valenti and marketing chief Sue Kroll were introduced to extoll the company’s commitment to theatrical and that it is ramping up more productions from the Orion and United Artists.

From there, it was back to film promotion with…

Daniel Craig as James Bond in 'Casino Royale.'
Daniel Craig as James Bond in ‘Casino Royale.’

Bond! But there isn’t very much to tell yet (as we guessed), with more of a mention that chosen producers Amy Pascal and David Heyman are getting down to work in London to figure out next steps.

“(We are) committed to honoring the legacy of Bond while bringing a fresh take.”

From a spy to a different type of hero with…

    Masters of the Universe

With the movie finally in production after years in development limbo, a behind-the-scenes featurette screened, which included a lot of work-in-progress props, and some sound bites from the powers that be promising a movie that is loyal to the cartoon and the toys.

Director Travis Knight gushed about having wanted to make this movie for years, adding:

“I have been a fan of Masters of the Universe pretty much my entire life. It was something I lived and breathed. I had the toys. I even had a He-Man haircut.”

‘Masters of the Universe’ will be on screens on June 5th, 2026.

The follow-up to the 2016 original, with director Gavin O’Connor returning alongside stars Ben Affleck and Jon Bernthal.

Affleck, Bernthal, Cynthia Addai Robinson and O’Connor were there to present an extended trailer for the action movie, which indicates that this sequel leans into the buddy comedy interplay between the brothers played by Affleck and Bernthal. While the trailer’s humor worked, the scripted banter on stage left something to the imagination, though it wasn’t really the fault of the cast.

  • Movie Review: ‘We Live in Time’

(L to R) Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield in 'We Live in Time'. Photo: StudioCanal.
(L to R) Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield in ‘We Live in Time’. Photo: StudioCanal.

Opening in limited theaters on October 11th (with a wide release on October 18th), ‘We Live in Time’ is the new film from director John Crowley, who has been behind the likes of ‘Brooklyn’ and the widely-panned adaptation of ‘The Goldfinch.’

This latest project dials back on the scale to focus on one couple as they hit various goal markers in their relationship, from meet cute (actually motor vehicle accident), through arguments and reunion, parenthood and engagement.

Is ‘We Live in Time’ worth your time?

(L to R) Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh in 'We Live in Time'. Photo: StudioCanal.
(L to R) Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh in ‘We Live in Time’. Photo: StudioCanal.

The biggest, and, until you settle in and let your brain get a handle on it, gimmick of the movie is its nonlinear nature; we follow Andrew Garfield’s wet-eyed Tobias and Florence Pugh’s ambitious, driven Almut through their shared story, but the pieces are chopped up and rearranged like a cook trying something new with a recipe (which happens to be Almut’s specialty as a chef).

Yet the whole story doesn’t always justify such narrative invention, since this is essentially a schmaltzy story of love and loss dressed up in edgier indie clothing. But the central performances make up for that.

    Script and Direction

(L to R) Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield in 'We Live in Time'. Photo: StudioCanal.
(L to R) Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield in ‘We Live in Time’. Photo: StudioCanal.

As mentioned, Nick Payne’s (‘The Last Letter from Your Lover, ‘The Sense of an Ending’) screenplay looks to play with time and mood so as to keep us on our toes and feel forced to fill in the narrative gaps. It’s just that the pieces are pretty predictable, and don’t really feel like the trick was necessary. Still, the words on the page do lead to some seriously affecting acting work.

Crowley, who has proved he can handle deep emotion without dipping too far into smug sentimentality doesn’t always avoid the same trap here, but eventually he starts to win you over, with help from Garfield and Pugh, who both shine, and a naturalistic feel to the central connection.

    Performances

The film is almost completely given over to the two main cast members, with pretty much everyone else just living props there to help move the story along.

    Florence Pugh as Almut

Florence Pugh in 'We Live in Time'. Photo: StudioCanal.
Florence Pugh in ‘We Live in Time’. Photo: StudioCanal.

Pugh is the luminous center of the movie, and not just because her headstrong chef is the real driver of the story as opposed to her co-star’s more passive impact upon it. Pugh rarely puts a foot wrong playing Almut, who yearns to make an impact on the world through her cooking and will occasionally put that first ahead of all else.

She’s a much more complicated and nuanced character than her partner, and it’s the sort of role where Pugh really digs down and finds the layers. Almut is loving, sweet, focused, selfish, playful and stern at different points in the story, but she’s never less than captivating, even when struggling to give birth in a gas station toilet.

    Andrew Garfield as Tobias

Andrew Garfield in 'We Live in Time'. Photo: StudioCanal.
Andrew Garfield in ‘We Live in Time’. Photo: StudioCanal.

Garfield’s is a much more low-key character; we see him as a damaged man in the middle of a divorce whose ego is bruised. And then his whole body is bruised when Almut accidentally runs him over in the movie’s memorable first meeting.

The trouble with Tobias is that he’s so painfully withdrawn in his own way, aside from with the woman he loves. Obsessed with keeping notes, he’s clearly entranced and in incredible love with Almut, but that, beyond some moments with his father, is all we really see of him.

He’s her support system, her sounding board and while Garfield does manage to find more of his inner life (one scene, where the couple discuss whether Almut will go for another round of cancer treatment or they’ll just enjoy the time they have left, is a masterclass in facial acting from Pugh, but particularly Garfield.)

He’s better than the mopey character on the page deserves, adding some real depth to a relatively shallow figure.

    Supporting cast

There are a few other actors who register; mostly those who are in close contact to the couple –– Douglas Hodge is entertaining as Tobias’ sensitive architect father, who has a great relationship with his son (and Hodge has superb father-son energy with Garfield). Ditto Lee Braithwaite as Jade, Almut’s Sous-chef, who is recruited to compete alongside her in a big cookery competition that ends up a source of drama between the couple.

    Final Thoughts

(L to R) Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh in 'We Live in Time'. Photo: StudioCanal.
(L to R) Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh in ‘We Live in Time’. Photo: StudioCanal.

There will definitely be a feeling of familiarity while watching ‘We Live in Time’ –– there have been any number of movies that track a relationship over time and a wealth of stories about people dealing with cancer diagnoses and everything that comes with that. This new example won’t exactly move the needle for most people, even with its attempt to maintain interest by slicing up the story.

Still, as an acting showcase for two of the UK’s finest performers, it’s certainly a welcome vehicle for Pugh and Garfield, and if its attempts to pluck at the heartstrings are sometimes too obvious, the eventual power of the tale does sneak up on you.

‘We Live in Time’ receives 6.5 out of 10 stars.

Given that Aaron Sorkin won a Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar for turning Ben Mezrich’s book ‘The Accidental Billionaires’ into the story of Facebook’s birth and complicated, contested early days, it seems only natural that he might be the person to tackle a story about its power and influence in the current era.

And from the sounds of it, that’s just what the creator of TV classic ‘The West Wing’ is now working on, albeit independent of any studio commission. And it appears he’s very suspicious of the site’s motives and impact.

What is Aaron Sorkin looking at for a potential new Facebook movie?

Oh, and asked what exactly he’d be focused on, he told the audience that they’d have to buy a movie ticket to find that out.

Who could direct a ‘Social Network’ follow-up?

David Fincher, of course, directed ‘The Social Network’ to great success, and Sorkin has said in the past that any future Facebook-associated project would be one he’d only consider if the ‘Se7en’ and ‘Fight Club’ filmmaker was involved.

This is what he told the ‘Happy Sad Confused’ podcast in 2020:

“People have been talking to me about [a sequel] because of what we’ve discovered is the dark side of Facebook. Do I want to write that movie? Yeah I do. I will only write it if [David Fincher] directs it. If Billy Wilder came back from the grave and said he wanted to direct it, I’d say I’d only do it with David.”

Yet in recent years, Sorkin himself has stepped up to direct his scripts, with movies including ‘The Trial of the Chicago 7’ and ‘Being the Ricardos’.

Right now, this exists only as a work-in-progress script by Sorkin, so we’ll see whether he gets to the point where he wants to take it out and attract some interest.

    Preview:

    • Martin Scorsese wants to make two new movies, one about Jesus and one about Frank Sinatra.
    • Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence are aboard the Sinatra biopic.
    • Both movies are facing challenges right now.

He may not have taken home a big haul of awards for ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’, but Martin Scorsese shows no sign of backing away from making movies. He’s got two big projects –– both of which have been percolating on his To Do list for a few years –– that he’s looking to now shoot back to back.

And one, a drama about a particularly fractious time in legendary crooner Frank Sinatra’s personal life, is a particular passion project, and one that he’s finally pushing to put together with Leonardo DiCaprio (of course!) and Jennifer Lawrence starring. So let’s take a look at these two new potential movies, shall we?

When he was out promoting his 2016 religious drama ‘Silence’, Scorsese dropped word that he had been looking to make a Frank Sinatra film with DiCaprio starring. It had been in development since at least 2011, with ‘Field of DreamsPhil Alden Robinson writing a script.

Little is known about the exact story at the time, but since Lawrence is on to be Ava Gardner, who infamously broke up Sinatra’s marriage to Nancy Barbato (and became his second wife), you can imagine why this one hit a snag with the singer’s family. Tina Sinatra controls the late performer’s estate, and she seems none too happy with Scorsese’s plans.

Apple, which handed the director a $215 million budget for ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ is, according to Variety, looking to stay in business with the director, though Sony is currently the front-runner to make the movie.

Yet the director is still aiming to make this movie once he’s wrapped on the Jesus film. Which brings us to that…

What is Martin Scorsese’s new film about Jesus?

In the same report about the Sinatra film, Variety mentions that Scorsese would first want to revisit the life of Jesus, who he infamously brought to screens in 1988’s ‘The Last Temptation of Christ’.

Life of Jesus,’, which Scorsese has been drumming up independent financing to make, would be based on Shūsaku Endō’s 1973 book. It’s the same approach he took to ‘Silence’ (which also was adapted from an Endō novel). And it might also have another ‘Silence’ connection, since one of that film’s stars, Andrew Garfield, is being considered for the Jesus project, though it’s unclear if the 40-year-old is being eyed for the titular role or to play one of the disciples. Miles Teller has also been linked to the film, which Scorsese wants to kick off shooting later this year in Israel, Italy and Egypt.

That first location is the one that might cause the most trouble, since the current war between Israel and the Palestinian group Hamas is affecting the region.

We’ll see if this either film truly gets moving at last, but Scorsese certainly seems committed to having them both on screen before he retires (take that, Quentin Tarantino!)

When would either new Scorsese film hit theaters?

No details are available for either film’s release plans, especially since they don’t yet have confirmed distribution –– or even schedules at this point.
