Premiering on Netflix February 5th is the new comedy ‘Kinda Pregnant’, which was directed by Tyler Spindel (‘The Wrong Missy’) and co-written by Amy Schumer (’Trainwreck’).

The film stars Schumer, as well as Jillian Bell (‘Candy Cane Lane’), Will Forte (‘MacGruber’), Damon Wayans Jr. (‘Let’s Be Cops’), Brianne Howey (‘Ginny & Georgia’), Alex Moffat (‘Saturday Night Live’), and Joel David Moore (‘Avatar’).

Moviefone recently had the pleasure of speaking with Amy Schumer and Jillian Bell about making ‘Kinda Pregnant’, Schumer’s work on the script, their characters’ long friendship, working together and improvising on set, the lie Schumer’s character tells, and if she’s ever told a lie that big in her own life.

You can read the full interview below or click on the video player above to watch our interviews with Schumer, Bell, Will Forte and Brianne Howey.

Moviefone: To begin with, Amy, can you talk about your first reaction to the screenplay and as a writer what were some of the elements you wanted to add to the film?

Amy Schumer: My first reaction was this is an incredible premise that felt like a classic comedy that I couldn’t believe hadn’t been made yet. I wanted to ground it a little more in truth about how friends talk to each other, and the circumstances. I wanted my character to be believable that you could like her and the circumstances to be possible, and just add bigger set pieces and make this a big comedy. I saw this as just huge.

MF: Jillian, can you talk about Lainy and Kate’s long friendship and how it is tested through the course of the movie?

Jillian Bell: Lainy and Kate have been friends since childhood, and they’ve probably had some bumps along the road, but this is probably the biggest one. I just think that it really showcased something that we don’t see often in film, which is truly what happens when you go through the hardest challenge in a friendship and overcoming that and seeing the ugliness of that and seeing it through and being like, “Great. Now that you’ve gotten that out, that you’re very jealous and want to have your own kid, where do we go from here? How do we keep this friendship on the tracks? Because I love you and your worth it.” They need each other. I think especially, I mean, I’ve never been through a pregnancy before, but in thinking of wanting that in my future, I would need my girlfriends to be around me as much as possible just to keep my sanity, it feels like.

MF: In the film, Lainy tells a big lie that spins out of control. Amy, can you talk about that, and have you ever told a lie that spiraled out of control and how did you handle that?

AS: I’m sure. I’m such a liar. I am sure I’ve told so many lies, but that’s the thing. I can’t really remember. I don’t have a great memory, so I really keep it honest these days because I can’t remember. But I just think there’s nothing funnier than lying. Seeing somebody in the moment having to lie just really gets me, and it’s so fun to play with. Also, it’s just something to keep up. The tension of the bump and then the faking it is just such a roller coaster to have to ride, and I feel like it’s such a good hook. I think people really hook into it and want to know how is this going to happen? How is this going to play out? Yeah, so the lie is what the whole movie is, at its core.

MF: Finally, Jillian, how much fun was it working with Amy and creating the friendship between these characters, and was there time for improvisation on set?

JB: There were so many moments to improvise and play and have fun, and Amy supported that throughout the entire process. I wish I could make every movie with Amy Schumer. I truly want to. It’s just easy and we have so much fun together. It was the best.

AS: Let’s just make every movie together. I’ll sign a contract right now. I couldn’t even look at Jillian a lot of times. She would just set me off and I couldn’t stop, and I would have to look right past her. But we have this whole sequence that isn’t even in the movie anymore where we were going, “You’re off.” And she’s like, “No, you’re off.” I don’t know, just improvising. It was heaven.

  • Movie Review: ‘Trolls Band Together’

Trolls Band Together’, which arrives in theaters on Friday, is the third outing for the popular franchise, following in the footsteps –– or perhaps that should be dance steps in this case –– of 2016’s ‘Trolls’ and 2020’s more controversial ‘Trolls World Tour’.

That second film was problematic not because of any particular content, but because it was one of the earliest movies to be released concurrently in theaters and on Peacock, which angered major movie chain AMC enough that it swore not to release Universal movies going forward (that has since been reversed thanks to a new contract between the studio and the company).

‘Trolls Band Together’ has faced its own challenge –– the actors’ strike has meant its stars, including Justin Timberlake and Anna Kendrick –– were not permitted to promote it until this final week of release now the strike is over.

So, the new movie has to stand on its own merits, which honestly are becoming fewer and fewer as the franchise rumbles along.

Is ‘Trolls Band Together’ a fun family film?

The ‘Trolls’ franchise, despite its star vocal power and box office success, has never seemed to enjoy the same reputation as, say, the ‘Shrek’ movies or ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ in the DreamWorks Animation Canon. It’s noticeable that there isn’t a troll to be found in the fancy recent animated legacy logo for the studio.

And while the original ‘Trolls’ was full of energy and no little invention, and the second looked to raise the stakes, ‘Band Together’ sadly feels like it’s running low on both, forced to rely on hokey old chestnuts as previously unexplored relatives and fame-hungry divas.

Plus, if we’re honest, the movie largely feels like an excuse to have Justin Timberlake reunite boyband NSYNC for a closing song. It’s a marketing decision that inspired a movie, and that shows.

‘Trolls Band Together’: Script and Direction

Zooey Deschanel voices Bridget in 'Trolls Band Together,' directed by Walt Dohrn.
Zooey Deschanel voices Bridget in ‘Trolls Band Together,’ directed by Walt Dohrn.

With DreamWorks veteran Walt Dohrn (who co-directed the original) and co-director Tim Heitz working from a script by Elizabeth Tippet (‘Trolls World Tour’) ‘Band Together’ flashes back to Branch’s (Timberlake) younger days when he was part of a boy band called BroZone with his brothers. Quite why he’s never thought to mention this fact to Poppy (Kendrick) is somewhat explained by the fact that the group –– and the family –– broke up after they failed to achieve a “perfect family harmony” during their big concert. And if you guessed that might factor into the plot down the road, have a gold star –– it’s always how these things work out.

But Poppy and Branch heading out on a mission to help save one of those mysterious brothers when he’s kidnapped by fame-hungry performers Veneer (Andrew Rannells) and Velvet (Amy Schumer), who literally have a way to siphon his talent for their own use is far from the most compelling concept. The storyline wends its way through the predictable beats that will keep the kids entertained enough but will likely feel punishing to most adults who have to take them.

It is certainly bright and frenetic in keeping with the other movies, but that’s all in service of a very bland story. And the jukebox musical format mostly makes you think that more effort was put into finding ways to squeeze in pop and oldies hits into the plot.

    ‘Trolls Band Together’: Performances

As usual, Kendrick is the standout here, her infectious enthusiasm as Poppy helping to paper over some of the cracks. Timberlake rarely gets above serviceable as Branch, though he seems to pick up some energy whenever he’s given a chance to sing.

There are a few of the veteran ‘Trolls’ performers here, especially Zooey Deschanel as Bridget and Christopher Mintz-Plasse as King Gristle, the former Troll-hunting Bergens who are now good friends of our heroes, while Kenan Thompson adds in his typical side gags as Tiny Diamond.

Of the new recruits, Schumer and Rannells make the most impact as the posturing performer twins, who are styled like 1920s cartoons from rivals Disney (surely no coincidence), while Camila Cabello does her best to match Kendrick’s energy as Viva, Poppy’s heretofore unmentioned sister. Credit also to Zosia Mamet as Crimp, the twins’ overworked and underappreciated assistant.

    ‘Trolls Band Together’ Final Thoughts

Branch (Justin Timberlake, center) in ‘Trolls Band Together,’ directed by Walt Dohrn.

If you’re in the right age bracket for the ‘Trolls’ movies, then this essentially delivers what you’re after –– a lot of music, some bright, peppy animation that moves at a high gear and plenty of silly jokes. It’s chaotic and candy colored, and if you don’t love one sequence, another will be along shortly.

Plus, there has been some effort lavished on the musical sequences, which are the selling point here –– some experimental animated moments that evoke the likes of ‘Yellow Submarine’ or wilder and wackier comic books to stand apart from the usual blend of felt Trolls and the rest of the characters, who have a near stop-motion feel.

Those who are older might smile at the sheer number of boyband names and other references crammed into the dialogue. But in general, you’re likely to end up just feeling a little tired of it all. These Trolls could really use spending quiet time in their tree for a few years –– at least until they dream up some new material.

‘Trolls Band Together’ receives 5 out of 10 stars.

What’s the story of ‘Trolls Band Together’?

Poppy (Anna Kendrick) discovers that Branch (Justin Timberlake) was once part of the boy band ‘BroZone’ with his brothers, Floyd (Troye Sivan), John Dory (Eric André), Spruce (Daveed Diggs) and Clay (Kid Cudi).

When Floyd is kidnapped, Branch and Poppy embark on a journey to reunite his two other brothers and rescue him.

Who else is in ‘Trolls Band Together’?

‘Trolls Band Together’ also features the voices of Zooey Deschanel, Kevin Michael Richardson, Patti Harrison, Andrew Rannells, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Kunal Nayyar, Amy Schumer, Kenan Thompson and Zosia Mamet.

  • 2022 Oscar Winners

Amy Schumer, Wanda Sykes and Regina Hall

Award season 2022 has officially come to an end with the conclusion of the 94th Academy Awards. The Oscars have been handed out, and we are going to breakdown all the winners and shocking moments of the night.

It began with Tennis legends Venus and Serena Williams introducing a performance of the Oscar nominated song “Be Alive” from ‘King Richard,’ performed by Beyonce on the Compton tennis courts where the Williams sisters grew up.

After the performance, hosts Amy Schumer, Wanda Sykes and Regina Hall took the stage to begin the show with a seemingly impromptu introduction by DJ Khaled. The three performers gave a short group monologue before Schumer gave a hilarious solo stand-up routine making fun of the stars in the audience.

The telecast included anniversary celebrations for several movies such as ‘White Man Can’t Jump,’ with Woody Harrelson, Wesley Snipes and Rosie Perez presenting together for their films’ 30th anniversary, while Elliot Page, Jennifer Garner, and J.K. Simmons reunited for the 15th anniversary of ‘Juno’ to present Best Original Screenplay.

The 60th anniversary of James Bond movies was celebrated, as was the 50th anniversary of ‘The Godfather,’ which saw director Francis Ford Coppola, Al Pacino and Robert De Niro together again on stage. And John Travolta, Uma Thurman, and Samuel L. Jackson reunited for the 28th anniversary of ‘Pulp Fiction,’ and of course, Travolta and Thurman danced.

However, the most awkward moment of the night came when Chris Rock was introducing Best Documentary Feature. The comedian did a few minutes of stand up, roasting the crowd. But when he poked fun at actress Jada Pinkett Smith’s career, her husband Will Smith stormed the stage and punched Rock in the face!

The Oscar nominated actor clearly wasn’t amused by the comedian’s joke, and about 30 seconds of an angry shouting match between the two performers was aired without audio. When the audio resumed, a startled Rock concluded by saying, “That was the greatest night in the history of television.’

As far as the actual awards go, the biggest surprise came with Kenneth Branagh winning Best Original Screenplay for ‘Belfast,’ beating frontrunner Paul Thomas Anderson for ‘Licorice Pizza.’ As well as Sian Heder who won Best Adapted Screenplay for ‘CODA’ beating out Jane Campion for ‘The Power of the Dog.’

In the artisan categories, ‘Dune’ was the big winner taking home Best Film Editing, Production Design, Sound, and Cinematography.

In the major award categories there were no real surprises at all. Ariana DeBose won Best Supporting Actress for her role in ‘West Side Story,’ and Troy Kotsur won Best Supporting Actor for his performance in ‘CODA.’ As predicted, Jane Campion won Best Director for her work on ‘The Power of the Dog.’

After his confrontation with Rock, Will Smith won (as expected) the Best Actor Oscar for his performance in ‘King Richard.’ In his tearful speech, Smith talked about protecting his family and apologized to the Academy, likely for his interaction with Rock. He also joked that life imitates art, implying that his behavior earlier in the evening mirrors the character he just received an award for portraying.

Best Actress, which was by far the most unpredictable race of the night, ended up going to Jessica Chastain for her performance in ‘The Eyes of Tammy Faye,’ beating out fan-favorite Kristen Stewart for ‘Spencer.’

The ceremony ended with Oscar winners Lady Gaga and Liza Minnelli presenting Best Picture to ‘CODA,’ which in a tight race pulled out the win over ‘The Power of the Dog.’

  • Oscars 2022: Amy Schumer, Wanda Sykes, Regina Hall to Host

(L to R) Wanda Sykes, Regina Hall, and Amy Schumer to Host the 2022 Academy Awards.
(L to R) Wanda Sykes, Regina Hall, and Amy Schumer to Host the 2022 Academy Awards.

Looking to return to a more normal state of affairs for this year’s Oscar ceremony, 2022 producer Will Packer has decided to return to having a host. Or in this case, three, as Amy Schumer, Wanda Sykes, and Regina Hall will take the job.

Packer, who has produced movies including ‘Girls Trip’ (which starred Hall), ‘Think Like A Man’, ‘Ride Along’ and many more, is the primary producer for this year’s show, and according to Variety, he’d been considering different options for hosts, including rotating between different pairs of presenters each hour of the ceremony. He has, apparently, now decided on just the three.

While even the single-host format isn’t a guarantee of quality, the multiple host idea has been fraught with problems (everyone remembers James Franco and Anne Hathaway), so you must wonder what the current trio will bring to the ceremony.

The actresses, who are not normally known for presenting, do at least have a lot of stand-up experience (Sykes and Schumer), and long, healthy acting resumes (Hall particularly), but the big challenge comes when you must be both funny and keep the show moving at a decent speed (so it doesn’t end up as 17 hours). Hopefully they’ll have the chance to write some of their own material, too.

While there had been some chatter about Tom Holland being asked to host, Variety has heard that Jon Hamm was a recent contender, but dropped out at the weekend. As of right now, the choice is still technically a rumor, but we can expect a formal announcement on Tuesday’s ‘Good Morning America’.

Jon Hamm Receiving an Emmy for his work on 'Mad Men.'
Jon Hamm Receiving an Emmy for his work on ‘Mad Men.’

Following 2021’s pandemic-impacted ceremony at Los Angeles’ Union Station, this year’s event will be back at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood and at full capacity. There has been some controversy over the Academy’s decision to require negative Covid tests over vaccine proof, especially given the Academy itself insists its employees are vaccinated.

And that’s not the only difference this year. The Oscars are going the public vote route in a big way, looking to engage audiences (especially given last year’s lackluster viewing figures). In a move that sounds more American Idol than Academy awards, we’ll all get a chance to vote in a couple of categories outside of the main ballot.

You can vote for your “Favorite Movie” and “Movie Cheer moment” on twitter using the hashtags #OscarsFanFavorite, #OscarsCheerMoment and #Sweepstakes, or at the Academy Website. You’ll be entered into the sweepstakes, which offer a chance to attend next year’s event and win other prizes.

Cue hordes of fans supporting ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ or ‘Malignant’, though we’re not sure we’ll see ‘Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway’ making a triumphant return to audience hearts.

The 2022 Academy Awards will happen on Sunday, March 27th. Our guide to the Oscar nominees can be found here.

Amy Schumer Sets Return to TV With New Hulu Series ‘Love, Beth’

    Netflix

Amy Schumer is going back to television — this time, on Hulu.

The actress and comedian has signed a first-look deal with Hulu that includes “Love, Beth,” her first series since Comedy Central’s “Inside Amy Schumer.”

Schumer will create, write, direct, produce and star in the scripted comedy “Love, Beth.” Details about the plot and characters have not yet been revealed.

This marks her first scripted TV series regular role and the first show since her award-winning sketch show on Comedy Central. She reportedly still has a contract with the network for a fifth season of “Inside Amy Schumer,” but no movement has been made on it since Season 4 ended in 2016.

In the past few years, Schumer has concentrated on movies and stand-up. She starred in “Trainwreck” and “I Feel Pretty,” appeared in two Netflix specials and one HBO special, and wrote and memoir “The Girl With the Lower Back Tattoo.

She got married to chef Chris Fischer in 2018 and the couple welcomed their first child in March.

Amy Schumer Is ‘Growing’ in New Netflix Special Trailer

    Netflix

Comedian Amy Schumer had a whirlwind 2018, marrying chef Chris Fischer in a surprise ceremony in February, then announcing her pregnancy with her first child in October. But if you think becoming a wife and soon-to-be mom has altered Schumer’s brash brand of comedy, you’d definitely be mistaken, as she points out in the trailer for her new Netflix special.

In “Growing,” Schumer dispels the myth that you “stop being you” when you have a baby. And for the comedian, being herself means saying exactly what’s on her mind.

One of the funniest — and most biting — bits in the trailer comes when Schumer discusses those lucky women who had no complications throughout their pregnancies, a distinction that the comedian definitely doesn’t share. The star suffers from hyperemesis, a condition that induces extreme nausea, which briefly hospitalized her and eventually forced her to cancel her stand-up tour.

“If you had a good pregnancy, like, if you’re someone who enjoyed being pregnant, I just hope your car flips over,” Schumer deadpans.

Nope, Schumer definitely isn’t allowing her impending motherhood to soften her sharp comedy.

“Growing” is due to arrive on Netflix on March 19.

Save the date for Amy Schumer’s second Netflix comedy special.

The comedian announced via Instagram that her “Amy Schumer Growing” standup special will premiere March 19 on the streaming service. It follows her first Netflix special, 2017s “The Leather Special.”

It is her first special since marrying chef Chris Fischer in February 2018 and announcing she was pregnant with their first child in October.

The show will feature her takes on marriage, pregnancy and “you guessed it, sex!” It was filmed in Chicago in December, just weeks after Schumer was forced to cancel some tour dates when she was hospitalized by hyperemesis, a pregnancy complication that brings on extreme nausea.

Schumer’s most recent movie was last year’s “I Feel Pretty.”

  • Now Margot Robbie Is in Talks for the ‘Barbie’ Movie … Directed by Patty Jenkins?

Now Margot Robbie Is in Talks for the ‘Barbie’ Movie … Directed by Patty Jenkins?

    Harley Quinn, Margot Robbie
    Warner Bros.

First Amy Schumer. Then Anne Hathaway. Now Margot Robbie is reportedly in talks for the “Barbie” movie.

It feels like they’re really getting close to the holy grail of castings. Just one more new announcement and they should arrive at Betty White.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Mattel is partnering with Warner Bros. for a movie based on the doll, with WB’s Harley Quinn herself — Margot Robbie — in early talks to star.

THR‘s sources added that “Wonder Woman” director Patty Jenkins was “circling the Warners project but indicate there are no substantive talks or offers that have taken place.”

This is either an elaborate troll … or already a better “Barbie” movie than Barbie could ever dream of — even from the best room of her dreamhouse.

The “Barbie” rights reverted back to Mattel earlier this year, after a Barbie movie was in development at Sony for years.

Margot Robbie, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
    Sony Pictures Entertainment

A Sony/Mattel movie was first announced in 2014, attached Amy Schumer in 2016, and then lost her but added Anne Hathaway in 2017. At that point, Sony also gave the film a June 2018 release date. Earlier this year Sony moved the movie to May 8, 2020.

But now … apparently Hathaway is out and Robbie is in? Will the release date move too?

Whatever happens from here, as long as Robbie does sign on, it’s a big step up all around. No offense to Oscar winner Anne Hathaway, or Amy Schumer, but Oscar nominee Margot Robbie is currently on a hot streak and it’s a coup to get her on board. Plus, she already looks like a Barbie doll.

    Suggestion: Bradley Cooper as Ken?

Or nab Leonardo DiCaprio for a third movie with Margot Robbie, after “The Wolf of Wall Street” and Quentin Tarantino’s upcoming “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood“?

Or maybe get Chris Pine back for another project with Patty Jenkins, if she does direct?

  • Amy Schumer Had a Savage Response to Jennifer Lawrence’s Latest Breakup

Jennifer Lawrence has been everywhere lately to promote “Red Sparrow.” Seriously. Check your closets, basement, garage — she might be in there, ready for another interview.

Last night, she was on “Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen,” and addressed a bunch of topics — including her buddies the Kardashians, the rumor that she’s dating Brad Pitt, and her split from “mother!” director Darren Aronofsky.

Lawrence is close friends with Amy Schumer, and JLaw was at Schumer’s recent wedding. On WWHL, Lawrence gave an update on the film they are working on together — they just had a table read two weeks ago; they now need a director, and a date. Andy Cohen said Bette Midler wants to play JLaw’s mom in the movie, even though the movie doesn’t have a mom role. Yet!

Speaking of Amy Schumer, Lawrence told Andy Cohen that she talked to Schumer right after the her breakup with Aronofsky:

“When Darren and I first broke up, and I told her, I was really sad. The next day I got a bouquet of flowers delivered and I was like, ‘What is this?’ I bring the bouquet of flowers in, and there was a note that says, ‘I’m so sorry to hear you’re gonna die alone. Love, Amy.’”

Bwahahaha. Already a smug married after only a few weeks.

'mother!' NYC PremiereChances are, Jennifer Lawrence will be just fine — and she won’t have to live or die alone unless she wants to. Considering some of the crazies out there, she may be happiest to just stay single.

Also on WWHL, she revealed she has all of her ex-boyfriends’ numbers still in her phone, except for the first one, since they didn’t even have cell phones at the time.

She also reacted to the rumor that she was dating Brad Pitt. As rumors go, it could be worse — and she knew it:

“No, I’ve met him once in like 2013, so it was very random. But, I also wasn’t like, in a huge hurry to debunk it.”

Yeah, that’s the kind of rumor you can let survive as its own fan fiction.

JLaw loves reality TV, especially the Kardashians and the Real Housewives. Watch her fangirl out over this “dinner party” with two of her favorites:There’s more!

Over on “Ellen,” Jennifer Lawrence revealed who’s a better kisser — her “Hunger Games” franchise costar Liam Hemsworth, or her “Silver Linings Playbook,” “Serena,” “Joy,” and “American Hustle” costar Bradley Cooper. (She picked Coop, but she didn’t elaborate on why.)

There’s even more! Watch Jennifer Lawrence take a lie detector test for Vanity Fair. She doesn’t believe that we all have soul mates, but she does want to get married someday.

  • Jennifer Lawrence’s ‘Red Sparrow’ Nudity Made ‘Everybody Else Uncomfortable’

Jennifer Lawrence was almost too comfortable getting nude on the set of her new movie “Red Sparrow.” But she sounded genuinely chagrined when admitting her top was unbuttoned throughout Amy Schumer’s “very sudden” Valentine’s Day wedding.

Lawrence talked to Entertainment Tonight for the premiere of “Red Sparrow,” which includes a nude scene for her sexy Russian spy character:

“There’s like one particular scene in the whole movie. The night before was worse. And then when I showed up, everybody made me feel so comfortable that I probably at a certain point started making everybody else uncomfortable. Because I’d be like, ‘I don’t want the robe. I’m hot!’ I’m, like, eating. And everybody’s like, ‘She needs to cover up.’”

Lawrence also revealed her dog Pippi was on set, and got upset by one scene where Lawrence was in a knife fight and fell to the ground. Little Pippi barked and ran over. “She was going to sacrifice her life for her mom!”

Speaking of true love, Lawrence was one of the A-list guests at Schumer’s wedding, and she talked to ET about that, too:

“It was beautiful. It was very sudden, but it was, I was sobbing the whole — his vows were stunning. It’s when two people really love each other and they really mean it, it shows, and it was a beautiful ceremony and an amazing time. I couldn’t be happier for them.”

For the wedding, Lawrence recycled the pink sleeveless Philosophy dress she wore to an event in December. (That’s the photo at top.) But this time, she was afraid she accidentally upstaged the bride:

“Notice my shirt was accidentally undone the whole time,” Lawrence told ET. “In every wedding photo all of my buttons were undone. It looks like I was like, ‘Oh, you thought this was going to be about you?’”

Haha. It’s true, though. If you look at the photos Schumer posted on Instagram, Lawrence’s buttons are all the way down. Apparently that was not intentional.

“Red Sparrow” — with intentional JLaw flashing — opens in theaters March 2nd.
