When a plane crashes in the waters of Lake Michigan, the pilot is pulled from the wreckage by Mitch (Sean Astin), who has been stranded on his boat. “Hand of God”
Amazon Prime is streaming Season 1 of this original drama series starting September 4. Dana Delany, Andre Royo, and Garret Dillahunt co-star.

    “Poltergeist”
Producer Sam Raimi backed this contemporary version of the 1982 horror classic, and it’s out on Digital HD September 4, before the Blu-ray/DVD release on September 29. Sam Rockwell, Rosemarie DeWitt, Jared Harris and Jane Adams star in the 2015 movie, and it might be fun to do a binge night, watching both the original and the remake back-to-back.

    “Up in the Air”
George Clooney, Anna Kendrick and Vera Farmiga star in this … can we call it a modern classic? Let’s do it … modern classic about corporate downsizing and human connections. It is also coming to Netflix September 1.

    New on DVD and Blu-ray

    “Aloha”
Cameron Crowe’s great cast (Bradley Cooper, Emma Stone, Rachel McAdams) could not save the dramedy from critical annihilation. Here, they plan an on-boat foam party despite a forecast of inclement weather.” Full steam ahead into the drama! • What’s New on TV, Netflix, Digital, and DVD/Blu-ray This Week: August 10 – 16

Mad Max Fury RoadAt a loss for what to watch this week? From new DVDs and Blu-rays, to what’s streaming on Netflix, we’ve got you covered.

    New on DVD and Blu-ray

    “Hot Pursuit”
Critics torched this crime comedy, but you can judge for yourself. Reese Witherspoon plays a by-the-book cop trying to protect Sofia Vergara’s drug lord wife as they race through Texas. The Blu-ray featurettes may actually be better than the movie. There’s “The Womance,” showing Reese and Sofia’s on-set antics; “Say What?” where Reese and Sofia try to speak the other’s language; “Action Like a Lady,” where they show the making of all the stunts; and an alternate ending. The DVD just has “The Womance.”

    “Unfriended”
During their usual group video chat, high school friends are terrorized by an unseen figure in this horror thriller. It pretty much polarized critics — some really liked, some REALLY disliked — so be prepared for either reaction.

    “I Am Chris Farley”
The life story of Chris Farley — the amazing much-missed comedy legend who died of a drug overdose back in 1997 at age 33 — is told by his friends, family, and TV/film colleagues in this new documentary. It just came out in limited release July 31 and it’s on DVD, Digital and VOD on August 11.

New Video on Demand, Rental Streaming, and Digital Only

    “Mad Max: Fury Road”
George Miller’s amazing apocalyptic action movie — starring Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy — has its Digital HD debut on August 11. It won’t be out on Blu-ray and DVD until Tuesday, September 1, but when those discs do drop they will come with tons of extra bonus features.

    “Kingdom”
Season 1 of this gritty, critically acclaimed series — from DirecTV’s Audience Network — has its Digital HD release on August 10. In the Venice, CA-set drama, Alvey (Frank Grillo) and Lisa (Kiele Sanchez) fight to keep Navy Street, a Mixed Martial Arts gym, alive. Everything is put to the test as two fighters — Alvey’s son, Nate (Nick Jonas), and Lisa’s ex-boyfriend, Ryan (Matt Lauria) -– prove they just might be what Navy Street needs. Catch it on iTunes, Google Play, Vudu, Amazon Instant Video, Sony Playstation, X-Box Nation, or MGo.

    “Fort Tilden”
This millennial comedy about two women in quarter-life crises won the 2014 SXSW grand jury prize winner for narrative film, and Orion is releasing it both theatrically and on VOD on August 14. Allie struggles to prepare for the Peace Corps, while Harper awaits checks from her father to fund her artistic dreams. But the two friends quickly ditch responsibilities for the day when a pair of good-looking guys invite them along for a carefree Fort Tilden afternoon. The movie is billed as “a hilariously insightful look at the consequences of extended adolescence.”

    “You’re the Worst”
Two toxic people — Jimmy, a self-involved writer, and Gretchen, a self-destructive Los Angeles PR executive — attempt a relationship in this comedy series. The first season is coming to Hulu on August 10, which gives you plenty of time to catch up before Season 2 premieres September 9 on FXX. Here’s the Season 2 trailer.

    New on Netflix

Three Netflix original series are arriving on August 14:

“Demetri Martin Live (At the Time)”: The actor/writer/stand-up comic’s comedy special.
“DinoTrux”: Season 1 of the children’s fantasy show set in a world of giant creatures that are half dinosaur and half truck.
“Ever After High: Way Too Wonderland”: The fifth TV special for the “Ever After High” cartoon series, tied to the “Way Too Wonderland” dolls. Here’s the trailer.

    TV Worth Watching

“Mr. Robinson” (Wednesday on NBC at 9 p.m.)
NBC launched two new back-to-back shows last Wednesday night: “The Office” alum Craig Robinson’s classroom comedy, “Mr. Robinson,” and Jerrod Carmichael’s family comedy, “The Carmichael Show.” Check them out this week and see what you think of the new lineup.

“Show Me a Hero” (Sunday on HBO at 8 p.m.)
David Simon, creator of “The Wire” and “Treme,” now brings HBO this six-part series set in the 1980s, exploring racial tensions in Yonkers, New York through the eyes of a 28-year-old mayor played by Oscar Isaac. All six episodes are directed by Paul Haggis, and the supporting cast includes Catherine Keener, Jim Belushi, Clarke Peters, Alfred Molina and Winona Ryder. Parts 1 and 2 premiere August 16.

“The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies”

    “Difficult People”
Julie Klausner and Billy Eichner star in this new Hulu Original series, which premieres August 5. Julie and Billy play more annoying and less successful versions of themselves — aspiring comics living, working and struggling in NYC as all of their friends move on to success and love. Amy Poehler is one of the producers and you can expect tons of great comedy guest stars (including Seth Meyers as a prostitute).

    Check out the series trailer:

    “Chocolate City”
If you liked “Magic Mike,” you might want to visit “Chocolate City,” which also follows the world of exotic male dancers and is out on DVD and Digital HD on August 4. Women go wild at the arrival of a young, new dancer named Michael (Robert Ri’chard) — a college student struggling to help his mother (Vivica A. Fox) make ends meet. When his part time job doesn’t pay the bills, he finds success at the nightclub dancing as “Sexy Chocolate.” As the money starts rolling in, Michael must deal with the unexpected pressure of being the new favorite flavor while hiding his “job” from his mother and girlfriend. The DVD also includes a blooper reel.

    New on DVD and Blu-ray

    “Insurgent”
The second movie in the “Divergent” series — starring Shailene Woodley, Theo James and Kate Winslet — is coming home August 4, including more than four hours of bonus material: audio commentary with producers Doug Wick and Lucy Fisher; “Insurgent Unlocked: The Ultimate Behind-the-Scenes Access” feature-length documentary; and five featurettes: “Diverging: Adapting Insurgent to the Screen,” “From Divergent to Insurgent,” “The Others: Cast and Characters,” “The Train Fight Unlocked,” and “The Peter Hayes Story.”

    “Far From the Madding Crowd”
Carey Mulligan stars as Bathsheba Everdene in this sweeping adaptation of Thomas Hardy’s classic novel, following an independent woman with three very different suitors: a sheep farmer (Matthias Schoenaerts); a soldier (Tom Sturridge); and a rich older bachelor (Michael Sheen). The Blu-ray comes with deleted scenes; an extended ending; the theatrical trailer, and the featurettes “Bathsheba Everdene;” “The Suitors;” “Adapting Far From the Madding Crowd;” “The Look of Far From the Madding Crowd;” “Gabriel Oak;” “William Boldwood;” “Sergeant Troy;” “The Locations of Far From the Madding Crowd;” and “Thomas Vinterberg.’

    “True Story”
Jonah Hill plays a disgraced New York Times reporter who learns that an accused killer, played by James Franco, has been impersonating him, leading to a chilling game of cat-and-mouse. The Blu-ray has a ton of special features, including an alternate ending, deleted scenes, “Mike Finkel Featurette,” “Who is Christian Longo?” “The Truth Behind True Story,” “The Making of True Story,” and audio commentary by director Rupert Goold.

    “Blackbird”
In this inspiring drama, a 17-year-old singer (Julian Walker) struggles with his sexuality and the treatment of others while coming of age in a small Southern Baptist community. Since his father (Isaiah Washington) left, Randy takes care of his emotionally disturbed mother (Mo’Nique), and he’s the kind of friend all of his classmates can depend on. As strong as he seems on the outside, Randy is hiding a secret denial of his true self. It’s not until he opens himself up to love that he discovers that becoming a man means accepting who you really are.

    New on Netflix

    “The Hurt Locker”
Kathryn Bigelow won Best Director — first woman to do so! — for helming this harrowing 2008 war drama starring Oscar nominee Jeremy Renner. It came to Netflix on August 1, so go be reminded why it also won Best Picture.

    “Dear Frankie”
This funny, touching 2004 drama follows a young boy named Frankie (Jack McElhone) who doesn’t know his father because his mother, Lizzie (Emily Mortimer), ran away from the abuser when Frankie was just a baby. Instead of telling Frankie the truth, she spins an elaborate lie, and even writes letters for Frankie posing as his father. But things take an unexpected turn and she ends up having to invent a fake father. Enter Gerard Butler, the ideal fake husband/father.

    “Bride & Prejudice”
Jane Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice” gets the Bollywood treatment in this charming 2004 romantic comedy/musical. Don’t miss this one. Here’s one of the dance scenes (you may recognize a few of the faces):

    TV Worth Watching

“America’s Next Top Model” (Wednesday at 8 p.m. on The CW)
Yes, this show is still on — and it’s still completely insane! Cycle 22 starts August 5 with more guy and girl models, more ridiculous photo shoots and — surely — more bizarre advice from Tyra Banks on how to be “flawsome” just as you are (or at least as you are after one of her makeovers). Watch the drama play out starting August 5.

“Project Runway” (Thursday at 9 p.m. on Lifetime)
That national treasure, Tim Gunn, is back with more advice for aspiring (but for some reason already arrogant) designers in Season 14 of the fashion favorite. Who will be the first designer to break down after a withering critique from Nina Garcia? It would be us if we were there, but instead we’ll just watch and empathize from home.

“True Detective” (Sunday at 9 p.m. on HBO)
“True Detective” Season 2 has its defenders but way more detractors. Oh well. It can still end strong. It could also end weak, and we’ll see which way it goes when Episode 8, “Omega Station,” airs on August 9.

  • What’s New on TV, Netflix, Digital, and DVD/Blu-ray This Week: July 20-26

At a loss for what to watch this week? From new DVDs and Blu-rays, to what’s streaming on Netflix, we’ve got you covered.

New Video on Demand, Rental Streaming, and Digital Only

    “Insurgent”
Shailene Woodley, Theo James and Kate Winslet return as Tris, Four and The Wicked Witch of Erudite in this sequel to “Divergent,” which has its Digital HD premiere on July 21, ahead of the DVD/Blu-ray/On Demand release on August 4. The Digital HD/3-D Blu-ray Combo Pack/Blu-ray include more than four hours of bonus material, including audio commentary with producers Doug Wick and Lucy Fisher; “Insurgent Unlocked: The Ultimate Behind-the-Scenes Access” feature-Length documentary; and five featurettes: “Diverging: Adapting Insurgent to the Screen,” “From Divergent to Insurgent,” “The Others: Cast and Characters,” “The Train Fight Unlocked,” and “The Peter Hayes Story.”

    “Before We Go”
Chris Evans — aka Captain America — makes his directorial debut and also co-stars in this romance with Alice Eve. She plays a woman who races to catch a train from NYC to Boston and, on the way, she’s robbed and left alone and lost in the city. If only there were a hot guy around to help her! This movie is scheduled for a limited release in theaters on September 4, but iTunes has it well in advance on July 21. So that’s pretty cool.

    “Veep”
Find out why Julia Louis-Dreyfus was just nominated for still another Emmy (she’s been nominated 20 times and won 5!) when Season 4 of this HBO gem makes its Digital HD debut on July 20. Julia plays former Veep/now acting POTUS Selina Meyer, but will voters chose to elect her president or will she have to pass the baton to one of her rivals? (One of those rivals includes a key ally, Season 4 newbie — and total scene-stealer — Hugh Laurie.)

    New on DVD and Blu-ray

“What We Do in the Shadows”
Do yourself a favor and check out this hilarious mockumentary about the lives of three vampires from Jermaine Clement (“Flight of the Conchords”) and Taika Waititi (“Eagle vs. Shark”). The Blu-ray has more than two hours of extras, including behind-the-scenes footage, commentary from writers/directors Clement and Waititi, and deleted scenes. In case you need convincing, here’s the trailer:

    “Kung Fu Killer”
Teddy Chen directs this action movie which has a great title and a pretty badass premise: A vicious serial killer is targeting top martial arts masters — which sounds like a death wish in the making — and convicted criminal and kung-fu master Hahou (Donnie Yen) is the only one with the skills to stop him. But can Hahou be trusted? Blu-ray bonus features include a behind-the-scenes featurette exploring how they made some of the key sequences.

    New on Netflix

    “Teacher of the Year”
There’s not a whole lot out on Netflix this week, to be honest, but this 2014 comedy will be available July 23. Matt Letscher stars as Mitch, who wins the California Teacher of the Year award and gets a tempting offer that might prompt him to leave his job. Keegan-Michael Key and Sunny Mabrey co-star.

    “The Guest”
Dan Stevens leaves Matthew Crawley waaaayyyy behind in this dark thriller, which is available July 25. Dan plays David, a young soldier who arrives on the doorstep of the Peterson family, claiming to be a good friend of their son, who died in action. But all may not be as it seems, and when people in town start dying, it’s time to start questioning “the guest.”

    TV Worth Watching

“Zoo” (Tuesday on CBS at 9 p.m.)
We’re up to Episode 4 of the James Patterson adaptation and things are getting wild. Get it — wild? Here all week! In “Pack Mentality,” CBS notes, “Jackson (James Wolk), Abraham (Nonso Anozie), Mitch (Billy Burke), Jamie (Kristen Connolly) and Chloe (Nora Arnezeder) are tasked by a top intelligence agent to find the cause of the strange animal behavior around the world. When the team travels to Mississippi to investigate the wolf attack on the prison, Mitch and Abraham break off to catch one of the wolves, and Chloe, Jackson and Jamie discover that death row inmate escapee Evan Lee Hartley (Marcus Hester) might somehow be involved in the attack.”

“Sharknado 3: Oh Hell No!” (Wednesday on Syfy at 9 p.m.)
Is this really “TV worth watching?” No. Oh hell no, even. But it’s summer. And it’s worth following just for the absurdity of it all — and to check Twitter to see what inspired tweets may emerge from your fellow guilty pleasure lovers. In this round, Ian Ziering, Tara Reid and Cassie Scerbo return, with David Hasselhoff, Bo Derek, Ryan Newman, and Jack Griffo joining the fun.

    “I Am Cait” (Sunday on E! at 8 p.m.)
Caitlyn Jenner’s eight-part docuseries begins July 26. Follow Cait’s search for her “new normal” and see how her transition impacts those closest to her.

  • Here’s Why ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ Will Not Have a Director’s Cut

Joss Whedon‘s first cut of “Avengers: Age of Ultron” was way longer than what aired at 2 hours, 22 minutes. But even though the eventual Blu-ray/DVD will include special features, there will be no official director’s cut — or anything like Bryan Singer’s new “Rogue Cut” for “X-Men: Days of Future Past.” Why not? While at Comic-Con this past weekend, Joss was on a NerdHQ panel moderated by Zachary Levi, and a fan asked about the possibility of an “Age of Ultron” director’s cut.

    Here’s Joss’s reply:

It has always been my ambition never to do a director’s cut of anything and always to make the movie with the studio that we both want to make. ‘Ultron’ was very complex and there was a lot of back-and-forth. My instinct is no. Just as an artist, I’m super f-cking lazy and that sounds like I’d have to go back, it would be hard. I don’t think there’s interest in it, right now. You’ll see a bunch of stuff on the DVD in extras that were meant to be there, but, you know, the narrative came together very close to the way that I hoped that it would and I don’t think it needs me to constantly tweak it. I feel you put something out and there it is.”

Watch his whole panel here (the director’s cut answer is around the 2:30 mark):

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige talked to Cinema Blend about Joss’s original cut of “Age of Ultron” and seemed to agree with Joss about people not really wanting to see the footage they cut:

Most films you can put an assembly together and it can be two hours and 45 minutes to three hours. I think the longest version of this was two hours and 45 minutes, thereabout. The longest version of ‘Ant-Man’ was three hours, but nobody wants to see those versions of the movie.”

Not quite true. There are definitely fans who would love to see full director’s cut versions, and not just deleted scenes or alternate endings. But we have to trust that the directors and studios know what they’re doing in just sticking to theatrical versions with a crapload of other extras to sell those DVDs.

    TV Worth Watching

“7 Days in Hell” (Saturday on HBO at 10 p.m.)
Bless whoever came up with this random 45-minute mockumentary about an epic seven-day tennis match. Andy Samberg — looking more “Joe Dirt” David Spade than Andre Agassi — and Kit Harington (Jon Snow + comedy = win) are the players, with real tennis stars like Serena Williams and John McEnroe giving commentary.

“The Spoils Before Dying” (Wednesday on IFC at 9 p.m.)
Are you ready for this three-night television event? Not possible! But it’s coming anyway. “The Spoils Before Dying” is the comedy follow-up to “The Spoils of Babylon” miniseries. This spoof once again stars Will Ferrell, Kristen Wiig, Haley Joel Osment, Val Kilmer, Michael Sheen, Maya Rudolph and more, this time following a 1950s jazz pianist turned private eye who gets involved in a murder investigation. The miniseries will air over three nights — two hours each night, July 8-10 — on IFC. Here’s the trailer:

“Lip Sync Battle” (Thursday on Spike at 10 p.m.)
The must-see Spike showdown has been on a break since May 28, but it’s back with a vengeance starting July 9 with Alison Brie vs. Will Arnett. The rest of the guests are just as awesome (Justin Bieber vs. Deion Sanders?!) and you won’t want to miss a single note.

“Masters of Sex” (Sunday on Showtime at 10 p.m.)
Showtime is bringing sexy — or at least clinical discussions of sex organs — back for Season 3 of the Lizzy Caplan/Michael Sheen drama. Episode 1 has the great title “Parliament of Owls,” and follows Masters and Johnson as they prepare to publish their study.

New Video on Demand, Rental Streaming, and Digital Only

    “Strangerland” (iTunes)
On July 10, iTunes will start streaming four movies that also open on the same day in theaters: “Nowitzki,” “What We Did On Our Holiday,” “10,000 KM” and “Strangerland.” In “Strangerland,” Nicole Kidman and Joseph Fiennes play a couple who discover that their teenage children have disappeared just before a massive dust storm hits their remote Australian town.

    “Prime Suspect” (Hulu)
Settle in and prepare to binge on seven seasons of the original Helen Mirren police procedural masterpiece. This puppy got an NBC remake, but nothing compares to the British version, with Mirren as Jane Tennison, one of the first female Detective Chief Inspectors in Greater London’s Metropolitan Police Service. Watch Seasons 1-7 on Hulu starting July 9.

    “True Story”
James Franco and Jonah Hill star in this psychological thriller based on a chilling real-life story. It’s available on Digital HD this Friday, July 10, well ahead of its August 4 DVD/Blu-ray release. Hill plays a disgraced New York Times reporter who learns that an accused killer (Franco) has been impersonating him, leading to a fascinating game of cat-and-mouse.

    New on DVD and Blu-ray

    “Woman in Gold”
Helen Mirren plays a Jewish woman who — with the help of her young lawyer, played by Ryan Reynolds — attempts to reclaim family possessions seized by the Nazis. The Blu-ray includes “The Making of Woman In Gold,” feature commentary with director Simon Curtis and producer David M. Thompson, and the trailer for the documentary “Stealing Klimt.”

    “Maggie”
In this father-daughter zombie apocalypse drama, Arnold Schwarzenegger plays a small-town farmer who refuses to accept defeat when his daughter Maggie (Abigail Breslin) becomes infected. Special features include a “Making Maggie” featurette, a deleted scene, cast and crew interviews, and audio commentary with director Henry Hobson.

    “Awaken”
If you like your horror twisted, consider this black market body parts thriller starring Jason London, Daryl Hannah, Vinnie Jones and Edward Furlong. A group of young adults wake up on a deserted tropical island with no idea why they’ve been kidnapped, then let go, only to be hunted down like animals. Turns out, this is part of a human organ harvesting operation that picks and chooses from the strongest and most fit survivors. Sick! Ramsay Bolton would love it.

    New on Netflix

    “Chris Tucker Live”
Chris Tucker’s new stand-up comedy special premieres exclusively on Netflix on July 10. The “Rush Hour” star is the latest addition to Netflix’s comedy special lineup, including Aziz Ansari, Craig Ferguson, Nick Offerman, Chelse Peretti and Chelsea Handler.

    “Serena”
Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper — who can’t stop making movies together, not that we’re complaining — play newlyweds in this not very well received drama set in the late 1920s. Check it out on Netflix starting July 9.

    “The Secret of Roan Inish”
This one started streaming on Netflix on July 1, but there’s not a lot new on Netflix this exact week, so — in case you missed it — you should definitely consider checking out this 1994 John Sayles indie set in an Irish fishing village.

  • What’s New on TV, Netflix, Digital, and DVD/Blu-ray This Week: June 29 – July 5

At a loss for what to watch this week? From new DVDs and Blu-rays, to what’s streaming on Netflix, we’ve got you covered.

    New on DVD and Blu-ray

    “Get Hard”
Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart team up in this comedy about a rich hedge-fund manager who is sentenced to San Quentin; desperate for tips on how to survive prison, he looks for help from a black businessman, assuming he’ll know what to do. That’s not racist at all! As it turns out, Hart’s businessman has never even had a parking ticket, so it’s the blind leading the blind. The Blu-ray has tons of extras, including an unrated cut of the film, a gag reel, deleted scenes, and these featurettes: “Just Put Your Lips Together and Blow,” “Get Hard Line-O-Ramas,” “The Kevin Hart Workout,” “Face Off with Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart,” “–Ferrell Fighting,” “A Date with John Mayer,” “Twerking 101,” “Will Ferrell, Gangsta,” “Inmates: Out of Control,” and “Bikers, Babes and Big Bangs.”

    “While We’re Young”
Ben Stiller and Naomi Watts play a “middle aged” couple who are happily married, but stuck in a rut. When they meet a 20-something free-spirited couple, played by Adam Driver and Amanda Seyfried, it’s like a breath of fresh air, prompting them to try increasingly ridiculous things in an attempt to act and feel young. Blu-ray special features include these six behind-the-scenes vignettes: “The Cast,” “Working with Filmmaker Noah Baumbach,” “Generation Tech,” “Working with Charles Grodin,” “Ayahuasca Ceremony,” and “Hip-Hop Class.”

    “Danny Collins”
Al Pacino stars as aging 1970s rocker Danny Collins, who can’t give up his hard-living ways. But when he’s given a 40 year-old undelivered letter written to him by John Lennon, it prompts him to reboot his life on every front. It’s directed by Dan Fogelman and co-stars Christopher Plummer, Jennifer Garner and Bobby Cannavale. Blu-ray extras include “Behind the Scenes of Danny Collins” and “Danny Collins – Album Covers Through the Years.”

    New on Netflix

    “Knights of Sidonia”
Season 2 of this Netflix Original series will be available on July 3. Set a thousand years after humans flee Earth, the series follows the remnants of humanity traveling in a massive starship called the Sidonia as they fight alien monsters called Guana. Maybe it sounds weird, but it looks cool.

    “Alive”
So many new titles are coming to Netflix on July 1, but this one brings us back — did you watch Ethan Hawke and company on the big screen back in 1993? “Alive” is based on the harrowing true story of the plane crash that left the Uruguay rugby team stranded in the Andes mountains. The survivors basically go through hell to stay alive, and then they have to struggle to live with their guilt. For the record, though, if anything like this happens again and we don’t make it and you need to eat … go ahead. Happy to help.

    “Underworld: Evolution”
Kate Beckinsale returns as the ultimate badass vampire in this 2006 sequel to the original “Underworld” movie of 2003. “Evolution,” which also stars Scott Speedman, was followed by the prequel “Rise of the Lycans,” then “Awakening,” which is a sequel to “Underworld.” Beckinsale is set to return as Selene in “Underworld: Next Generation” in 2016. They say vampires are immortal, and apparently so is this franchise.

"Pilot -- Re-entry" " -- EXTANT: CBS\'s new summer series EXTANT is a mystery thriller starring Academy Award-winner Halle Berry as --њMolly Woods,--ќ a female astronaut trying to reconnect with her family after returning from a year in outer space. Her mystifying experiences in space lead to events that will ultimately change the course of human history. EXTANT premieres Wednesday, July 9 (9:00-10:00 PM, ET/PT). “Extant” (Wednesday on CBS at 10 p.m.)
Halle Berry’s trippy sci-fi drama is back for Season 2 starting July 1. The premiere, titled “Change Scenario” has this official synopsis from CBS: “Six months after her life unraveled and dark secrets were revealed, Molly (Halle Berry) is confined to a psychiatric hospital when she learns of bizarre deaths that sound eerily similar to those she witnessed in space. When she escapes to investigate, she crosses paths with JD Richter, a determined cop who just signed on to the case.” Jeffrey Dean Morgan joins the cast as JD Richter, a cop and bounty hunter who thrives on solving the unsolvable.

“Penny Dreadful” (Sunday on Showtime at 10 p.m.)
Showtime’s horror drama is coming back for Season 3, but first the 10 episodes of Season 2 must end — and end they shall on July 5 with “And They Were Enemies.” (Good title.) According to Showtime, “Vanessa (Eva Green) must rely on her strength to defeat the Demon.”

“Inside Amy Schumer” (Tuesday on Comedy Central at 10 p.m.)
Comedy Central now has a great Tuesday night lineup: They have Amy Schumer at 10 p.m., followed by the new turn-of-the-century sitcom “Another Period” at 10:30 (think Keeping Up with Downton Abbey), then “The Daily Show With Jon Stewart” at 11. On June 30, the party starts as Amy journeys through time; listens to awful stories; and gives a whole town an STD. Unmissable!

New Video on Demand, Rental Streaming, and Digital Only

    “Lone Survivor” (HBO NOW)
Back in April, HBO launched its new standalone streaming service, HBO NOW, featuring HBO’s new and classic programming, plus the latest movies. On July 1, they are adding several titles, including “Inside Man,” “A.I. Artificial Intelligence,” “Dawn of the Dead,” “My Big Fat Greek Wedding,” and “Lone Survivor,” the Mark Wahlberg film based on a true story about a Navy SEAL mission in Afghanistan.

    “Fargo” (Hulu)
Hulu is also getting a ton of new titles on July 1 — from the classic “Annie Hall” to “WarGames,” “Mystic Pizza,” “Y Tu Mama Tambien” and even “The Human Centipede: First Sequence.” But one you should definitely check out — especially if you’ve never seen it — is “Fargo,” the 1996 Oscar winner for Best Original Screenplay and Best Actress. The Coen Bros., Frances McDormand and William H. Macy knocked it out of the park in this strangely moving crime drama with an impeccable score from Carter Burwell.

    “Downton Abbey” (Amazon Prime)
Amazon Prime is also getting a lot of great movie titles in early July (at the start of the month, there are always several options), including “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,” “The Bad News Bears,” “Glory,” Gandhi,” “Dr. Strangelove,” “The Day The Earth Stood Still” and “Dirty Dancing.” But now is also a good time to catch up on “Downton Abbey” before Season 6, so if you are not up to date on Season 5, Amazon Prime has it starting July 1.

  • What’s New on Netflix, TV, Digital, and DVD/Blu-ray This Week: June 8-14

At a loss for what to watch this week? From new DVDs and Blu-rays, to what’s streaming on Netflix, we’ve got you covered.

    New on Netflix

    “Orange Is the New Black”
It’s here! Season 3 of Netflix’s crazy addictive prison dramedy is available Friday, June 12. Hopefully you’ve got tiii-iii-iiime to stream all 13 episodes in one long binge.

    “Nightcrawler”
Jake Gyllenhaal gets creepy as a freelance crime journalist in L.A. in this highly acclaimed thriller. Catch it on Netflix starting June 10.

    “Grace of Monaco”
This one … was not so critically acclaimed, but sometimes the critics get it wrong, or the bashing just lowers expectations enough that the film is a pleasant surprise. No promises, but check out Nicole Kidman as Grace Kelly, with Tim Roth as Prince Rainier III, when “Grace of Monaco” hits Netflix on June 8.

    New on DVD and Blu-ray

    “Serena”
Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper make a great on-screen team (“Silver Linings Playbook,” “American Hustle”) and you can see them again here in Susanne Bier’s drama, which is based on a novel about newlyweds in the timber business in Depression-era North Carolina. Blu-ray special features include deleted scenes, “The Making of Serena: The Story, Direction & Characters,” “Exploring The Production Design & Time Period,” “Following The Screenwriting: Comparing The Film & The Novel,” and “Breaking Down The Set: Kingsport Tanners, Train Station & Main Street.”

    “Kingsman: The Secret Service”
This British spy action comedy — starring a bunch of cool people like Colin Firth, Samuel L. Jackson and Michael Caine — had its Digital release last month, but now it’s out on DVD/Blu-ray June 9. Blu-ray features include commentary, “Kingsman: The Secret Service Revealed – Panel-To-Screen: The education of a 21st Century Super Spy,” “Heroes and Rogues,” “Style All His Own,” “Tools of The Trade” “Breathtakingly Brutal,” and “Culture Clash: The Comic Book Origins of The Secret Service.”

“Masterpiece: Forsyte Saga: The Complete Series”
You have not truly lived until you’ve seen the dark side of Damian Lewis as the sketchy Soames Forsyte opposite a resplendent Gina McKee as his reluctant bride in this epic, sprawling series. The new set is out June 9.

    TV Worth Watching

“Game of Thrones” (Sunday on HBO at 9 p.m.)
Seems hard to believe, but it’s already time to bid farewell to GoT Season 5. This show usually has a strong close, leaving us begging for more. Episode 10, “Mother’s Mercy,” is likely to be no different. HBO’s synopsis tells us “Stannis marches. Dany is surrounded by strangers. Cersei seeks forgiveness. Jon is challenged.” GoT has strayed from the books more than ever this season, but many bells are ringing with those descriptions. Worry for everyone and prepare to feel all available emotions.

“CMT Music Awards” (Wednesday on CMT at 10 p.m.)
Erin Andrews and Brittany Snow will co-host the live June 10 show, which will include performances from country artists Carrie Underwood, Florida Georgia Line, Jason Aldean, Keith Urban, Kenny Chesney, Lady Antebellum, Luke Bryan, Eric Church, Jake Owen, Sam Hunt and Zac Brown Band.

“Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell” (Saturday on BBC America at 10 p.m.)
Bertie Carvel and Eddie Marsan star in this seven-part historical fantasy series, based on Susanna Clarke’s best-selling novel. The show already debuted on BBC One in the UK and it’ll hit BBC America on June 13.

New Video on Demand, Rental Streaming, and Digital Only

“Transformers: Age of Extinction” (Amazon Prime)
The fourth “Transformers” movie — starring Mark Wahlberg, Nicole Peltz, Stanley Tucci, Kelsey Grammer, and all the Autobots, Dinotos and Decepticons — will arrive on Amazon Prime on June 13.

    “God? The Almighty Question” (Hulu)
Have you ever wanted to know how Hugh Jackman, David Copperfield, Ringo Starr, Sir Bob Geldof, Seal and others would answer the question “What is God?” This documentary takes you around the globe to meet all kinds of people who share thought-provoking answers to the biggest question of all. Available June 9.

    “Extinction Soup” (iTunes)
This documentary out June 8 follows filmmaker Philip Waller as he exposes an environmental catastrophe in the making — the extinction of the oceans’ shark population through mass slaughter. “Extinction Soup” spotlights conservationist Stefanie Brendl as she fights to pass legislation to curb the consumption of shark fin soup, considered a delicacy in many cultures, and the impetus behind 70 million sharks being killed per year. Check out the trailer:
