  • What’s New on TV, Netflix, Digital, and DVD/Blu-ray This Week: January 4-10

At a loss for what to watch this week? From new DVDs and Blu-rays, to what’s streaming on Netflix, we’ve got you covered.

    New on DVD and Blu-ray

    “Broad City”
Check out Season 2 of Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer’s brilliant Comedy Central series this week on DVD/Blu-ray. Guest stars for the 10-episode season include Bob Balaban, Aidy Bryant, Patricia Clarkson, Susie Essman, Janeane Garofalo, Kumail Nanjiani, Kelly Ripa, Seth Rogen, Amy Ryan, Alia Shawkat, and David Wain. DVD bonus features includes outtakes, deleted scenes, a Pop-Up Enhanced Episode, the “Hack Into Broad City” series, and “Body By Trey” videos. FYI, Season 3 premieres February 17.

New Video on Demand, Rental Streaming, and Digital Only

    “Dragons: Race to the Edge”
Here you go, “How to Train Your Dragon,” fans: Season 2 of this Netflix Original series debuts January 8. “Race to the Edge” takes place in the period between the first two “How To Train Your Dragon” films and follows Hiccup, Toothless, Astrid, and friends on their many adventures.

    “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia”
Perfect timing: Netflix is offering Season 10 of this must-watch comedy starting January 5, which is the day before Season 11 premieres on FXX. So have yourself a 10-episode New Year’s binge, and prepare to shake your head anew at the crazy antics of the Paddy’s Pub crew.

    TV Worth Watching

“The Bachelor” (Monday on ABC at 8 p.m.)
Yes, it’s worth watching — to feel better about yourself. The ultimate guilty pleasure show returns January 4, with blandly sweet Ben Higgins handing out roses to women who will inevitably steamroll him into submission. As you watch this trainwreck, you can almost literally feel your brain turning to mush, but it’s just as addictive as the junk food that turns your stomach to mush, so … what’s life without a little mush? Believe it or not, there’s also a “Bachelor Live” post-show airing from 10 to 11 p.m. with special guests discussing what just happened on the Season 20 premiere.

“Lip Sync Battle” (Thursday on Spike at 10 p.m.)
No idea how these lip sync battles became must-see TV, but they did. Now Season 2 is here to up the ante, with the January 7 premiere offering the “Tatum Takedown” of Channing Tatum vs. wife Jenna Dewan-Tatum. Word on the street says Beyoncé will be showing up to help Chan, which pretty much guarantees he’ll win. Future Season 2 battles include Kevin Hart vs. Olivia Munn, Anthony Anderson vs. Tracee Ellis Ross, Chris D’Elia vs. Brent Morin, and Nina Dobrev vs. Tim Tebow.

“Netanyahu at War” (Tuesday on PBS at 9 p.m.)
Let’s get serious for a minute. For every hour of junk like “The Bachelor,” you owe your brain some vegetables like this two-hour Frontline documentary from veteran filmmaker Michael Kirk. “Netanyahu at War” follows the Israeli prime minister’s path to power, goes inside his relationships with multiple U.S. presidents — including his clash with President Obama over the Iran nuclear deal — and explores the implications of those relationships in the U.S. and the Middle East.

Bernal also won the Imagen Award for Best Actor on Television, so consider streaming both Season 1 and Season 2 to catch up on the buzz.

    “Nurse Jackie”
CBS/BBCThere’s really no better way to spend New Year’s Eve than binge-watching all seven seasons of “Nurse Jackie.” Seriously, it’s perfect for resolutions — after you’re done watching Edie Falco’s drug-addicted nurse Jackie Peyton, you’ll know exactly what you SHOULDN’T do in 2016. “Downton Abbey” (Sunday on PBS at 9 p.m.)
It’s the beginning of the end. The sixth and final season of “Downton Abbey” begins in the U.S. on January 3. How will they torture poor Edith this time? You know when they say not everyone will get a happy ending they probably mean Edith — and maybe poor Anna again. Mary will be fine, of course, even though she doesn’t deserve it. #TeamEdith

“Galavant” (Sunday on ABC at 8 p.m.)
The very best Python-esque musical comedy on television returns for its second season this weekend. There are only 10 episodes airing over five weeks, so it’s not a huge time commitment, but every loopy minute is must-see. Bonus for “Downton” fans: This show has Hugh Bonneville, too!

New Year’s Eve (Thursday on NBC, FOX, ABC starting at 8 p.m.)
If you feel like staying home on New Year’s Eve, there are several options for your viewing pleasure. Over on FOX, “Pitbull’s New Year’s Revolution” also starts at 8 p.m. with Puff Daddy, Austin Mahone, Jordin Sparks, and more. New on DVD and Blu-ray

    “F is for Family”
“F is for Family” is one of four Netflix original series dropping on December 18. PC Principal would hate this one, but that may be why you love it. The animated sitcom, co-created by comedian Bill Burr, debuts its first six episodes on December 18. It’s a “family comedy” set in the pre-PC world of 1970s “when you could smack your kid, smoke inside and bring a gun to the airport.” Ah, the good ole days! Bill Burr voices the Murphy family patriarch, with Laura Dern as his wife, Justin Long as his eldest son, Debi Derryberry as his daughter, and Haley Reinhart as his young son.

Check out the very un-PC Season 1 trailer (warning: explicit language):
“Fargo” (Monday on FX at 10 p.m.)Maybe all Coen Bros. movies should inspire new TV shows. Season 2 of this instant classic series stars Kirsten Dunst, Patrick Wilson, Jesse Plemons, Jean Smart, and Ted Danson, and the fun is ending with Episode 10, “Palindrome,” on December 14. Check out why it just got some “The Expanse” (Monday on Syfy at 10 p.m.)
Syfy is launching its most ambitious series ever with the 10-episode space drama “The Expanse.” Episode 1 starts December 14, with Episode 2 following the next night, Tuesday, December 15. The case of a missing young woman leads a hardened detective and a rogue ship’s captain across the solar system to uncover the greatest conspiracy in human history.

“The Soup” (Friday on E! at 10 p.m.)
This is it. E! is ending “The Soup” after 22 seasons on Friday, December 18. The series started as “Talk Soup” with host Greg Kinnear, and was renamed and spruced up in 2004 when Joel McHale took over. Clear some time on Friday night to bid the show adieu.

That’s about a month before the Blu-ray Combo Pack, DVD and On Demand release — with tons of special features — on December 15.

Here’s a behind-the-scenes clip from the special features — available on iTunes Extras and Blu-ray Combo Pack — with Tom Cruise explaining how he completed the underwater sequence from the film. He learned how to hold his breath for up to 6.5 minutes, which is crazy impressive.

    “We Are Your Friends”
Zac Efron’s coming-of-age EDM movie didn’t exactly hit high notes at the box office, but it does have its defenders and, who knows, it may turn into a cult hit. Wes Bentley and Emily Ratajkowski co-star, and you can check them out on DVD/Blu-ray November 17.

    “The Hobbit Trilogy Extended Edition”

TV Worth Watching“The Leftovers” (Sunday on HBO at 9 p.m.)
Why aren’t more people watching “The Leftovers”? Is it the microwave-ready title? The fact that it’s from Damon Lindelof and people fear investing in another “Lost” mystery? “The Leftovers” is arguably the deepest, most profound, and thought-provoking show on the air right now — with master class acting from Carrie Coon, Regina King, Christopher Eccleston, and Justin Theroux — and it’s worth of a binge to catch up. The November 22 episode — the eighth hour in the 10-episode Season 2 — is called “International Assassin.” Try it!

“The Amazing Race” (Friday on CBS at 8 p.m.)

The list of “Inside Out” extras and special features is too long to post here — it’s as expansive as the credits of the movie! — but here’s the roundup for reference.

    “Southpaw”
Jake Gyllenhaal is one of those actors who goes through extreme transformations for nearly every role and he does it again in this boxing movie that’s about a lot more than boxing. “Southpaw,” which also stars Rachel McAdams, Forest Whitaker, Naomie Harris, and 50 Cent, has its digital release on October 16, before it drops on DVD/Blu-ray on October 27.

    “Vacation”
Ed Helms plays a grown up Rusty Griswold, who takes his family on a road trip to Walley World in this raunchy, star-studded return to the classic comedy franchise. Catch it on digital October 13, before it hits DVD/Blu-ray November 3.

    New on DVD and Blu-ray
    “San Andreas”
It’s the big one! When the San Andreas Fault rocks our world with a massive earthquake, a search and rescue helicopter pilot (Dwayne Johnson) and his estranged wife (Carla Gugino) make their way from L.A. to San Francisco to try and save their only daughter. Just suspend disbelief and go with it. Special features include audio commentary, a gag reel, a stunt reel, deleted scenes and the featurettes “San Andreas: The Real Fault Line,” “Dwayne Johnson To The Rescue,” and “Scoring The Quake.”

    “Dope”
This coming-of-age high school comedy, set in L.A., was a hit with critics and Sundance audiences. Watch Shameik Moore’s breakout performance when “Dope” hits the streets October 13. Extras include “Dope Is Different,” with the cast and crew discussing the film’s central characters and themes of being unique and authentic; and “Dope Music,” with Pharrell Williams, A$AP Rocky, Rick Fumuyiwa and others delving into the essential role old-school rap and punk rock tracks play in the film.

    “Tomorrowland”
Brad Bird’s sci-fi adventure, starring George Clooney, Britt Robertson and Hugh Laurie, has its Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital release on October 13. The Digital HD and Blu-ray combo back come with an insane number of special features, including eight deleted scenes, four Easter eggs, and about six featurettes.

    New on Netflix
    “Beasts of No Nation”
Netflix starts streaming its first original feature film on October 16, which is also the same day it hits theaters. The amazing Idris Elba leads a cast directed by “True Detective” Season 1’s Cary Fukunaga. The story follows Agu (Abraham Attah), a young boy growing up in a West African country on the brink of civil war. When the fighting reaches Agu’s village, his family is torn apart and he is forced to flee. He crosses paths with a group of guerilla soldiers led by a fierce commandant (Idris Elba). Agu is indoctrinated into their ranks as the commandant trains him to cope with his pain through violence.

    “Anthony Jeselnik: Thoughts and Prayers”
Netflix is premiering two originals on October 16, and the second is this comedy special from Anthony Jeselnik. As Netflix noted (and the title suggests), “There’s no subject too dark as the comedian skewers taboos and riffs on national tragedies before pulling back the curtain on his provocative style.”

    “Jane the Virgin”
On the same day that The CW is premiering “Jane the Virgin” Season 2, Netflix wants to help you catch up on Season 1. It’s all going down on Monday, October 12, so why not make it a Virgin marathon day?

    TV Worth Watching
“Fargo” (Monday on FX at 10 p.m.)
The second season of FX’s breakout show is set in 1979, starring Patrick Wilson as State Trooper Lou Solverson, a recently returned Vietnam vet who investigates a crime involving a local gang and syndicate. His father-in-law, Sheriff Hank Larsson (Ted Danson), helps him put the puzzle pieces together. Jean Smart, Kirsten Dunst, and Jesse Plemons co-star, with Nick Offerman, Jeffrey Donovan, and Bruce Campbell (as Reagan!) in recurring roles.

“Saturday Night Live” (Saturday on NBC at 11:30 p.m.)
Tracy Morgan is the host on October 17, marking his big return not only to SNL and NBC, but comedy in general after his near-fatal car accident. Demi Lovato will back him up as the musical guest.

“The Great British Baking Show” (Sunday on PBS at 7 p.m.)
There are a lot of new and returning TV shows premiering this fall, but it’s worth getting yourself addicted to PBS’s baking competition show, brought to the U.S. from the U.K. Right now, PBS is airing Season 2, which is actually the fourth series of the U.K. show. Apparently we’ll be getting these things in random order. No matter. Each episode is scrumptious to watch and the “drama” is never mean-spirited or over-bearing, it’s just good clean delicious fun. The trick is finding when it airs in your area, since it’s not one set time for everyone. Some of us get it Sunday nights at 7 p.m. but head to PBS’s site and check your local listings to see when it’s on for you.

    “The Mindy Project”
Mindy Kaling’s FOX show was saved from an early death (huzzah!) and will launch Season 4 on Hulu on September 15. According to the L.A. Times, the Season 4 premiere pays homage to the Gwyneth Paltrow movie “Sliding Doors,” exploring what it’d be like if Mindy had never fallen for Danny. Instead, they note, Mindy finds herself in bed with a “Real Housewives” reality producer played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt. (Not a bad alternate reality…) When Mindy visits Danny she finds he’s dating Freida Pinto. Check out the Season 4 trailer:

    “Cooties”
Elijah Wood, Rainn Wilson and Alison Pill star in this horror comedy from the creators of “Saw” and “Glee” (interesting combo…). “Naomi & Ely’s No Kiss List”

“Z Nation” (Friday on Syfy at 10 p.m.)
The second season of Syfy’s own zombie apocalypse show starts on September 11. Season 1 ended on a cliffhanger for Murphy (Keith Allan), a survivor immune to zombie bites. Meanwhile, Citizen Z finds himself battling thawed zombies and unable to communicate with the team, which leads him to make a desperate move that prompts the arrival of a mysterious and deadly bounty hunter.” Fun!
