    Prime Video’s upcoming new action-comedy, ‘The Pickup‘, is set to start streaming on August 6th, 2025. The film stars Eddie Murphy, Pete Davidson, Eva Longoria, Marshawn Lynch, and Keke Palmer. In the movie, chaos unfolds after a routine cash pickup goes wrong.

    Moviefone was in attendance at a virtual press conference featuring Eddie Murphy, Pete Davidson, Keke Palmer, and director Tim Story. They shared behind-the-scenes details and lots of laughs while celebrating the upcoming release of their new film.

    1) Pete Davidson Calls ‘The Pickup’ An Old School Comedy

    When asked to describe ‘The Pickup’, Pete Davidson relates it to an early 2000s movie, emphasizing that it really leans in on the fun side of things.

    Pete Davidson: I think it’s one of those fun, early 2000s old school action comedy, fast-moving. There’s not a dull moment. The story picks up literally from the jump, and it moves, and it’s an hour and 40 minutes of just fun. It’s just fun. You watch it with everybody. There’s someone in it for everyone to like, so I think it’s just a right down the middle fastball.

    With a cast like Eddie Murphy, Keke Palmer, Pete Davidson, and Eva Longoria, you cannot go wrong. Tim Story gushes over them, admitting this is a dream cast.

    Tim Story: It was like a dream come true. I want to say my career has a little bit been on trying to chase [Eddie Murphy] down and do a movie with him. And so when you get that, and then you can, you see him with Pete, and as many people have said, it’s the pairing that you didn’t realize you needed so much, and then you see them together, and then you had Keke. It was just a bag of riches that just kept coming out. It’s a movie of the 80s, and I’m an 80s comedy kind of kid, and I just felt like I had a dream come true.

    3) Keke Palmer Was Excited To Work With Pete Davidson Again, This Time Face-to-Face

    Keke Palmer and Pete Davidson have worked together in the past, but because of the pandemic, ‘The Pickup’ was actually the first time they were able to work together face-to-face.

    Keke Palmer: I worked with Pete before, so it was great to work with him again, and this time face-to-face because the last thing we did was a podcast during COVID. So we were really not near each other. It was during COVID, so they wouldn’t even let us say hi. We were just in between sheets of glass and so desperately wanting to do something, and this thing came along. I had a good time. It was really fun.

    Keke Palmer, who is a comedic genuis herself, was extremely impressed watching Eddie Murphy work. She feels as if she has learned a lot from working alongside him.

    Keke Palmer: I was happy because I asked him his favorite movie that he’s ever done, and I was like, it was the same movie of mine that he’s ever done, which is ‘Nutty Professor’, because those characters that he made were so real. For years, when I was little, I was like, is that really Eddie? That’s not a real mama? Every single character was so truthful. It was comedy, but it was truthful, and I really do feel like working on ‘The Pickup’ prepared me for one of them days because I got to watch a masterclass of him continuously playing the truth. Every improvisation, every joke, the situation was the comedy, and he just always knew how to add to it in just the right way. It was an honor. I can’t wait to do it again.

    5) ‘The Pickup’ Script Is What Drew Eddie Murphy To The Film

    Eddie Murphy is a legend. Because of this he can pick and choose what projects he wants to work on. He claims it was the solid script of ‘The Pickup’ that made him want to be a part of it.

    Eddie Murphy: That the script was solid when I read it. Usually, these pieces take years to develop and you see a bunch of different drafts of the script. But this thing was like 90% there when I read it the first time. It was like, hey, this could work. Then we got Tim, and I was like, okay, well, we’re making this movie. It just came together really quick. The script being solid is why I jumped on it, so to speak.

    6) Keke Palmer Says Her ‘The Pickup’ Character Is More Of An Anti-Hero Than A Villain

    When asked if she was inspired by any other performances when crafting her character, Keke Palmer says that she wasn’t thinking about anyone in particular, and just wanted to be truthful to who she felt her character is.

    Keke Palmer: I was just wanting to play who I thought this character was, honestly, truthfully. She’s a villain, but she’s somebody that has a reason. In my mind, I felt like she was a bit of an anti-hero, and she’s honestly trying to get these guys on board with what she’s trying to do. There’s a bit of a romance that’s happening with Pete’s character, even if she’s not fully admitting it. And then there’s this feeling of she’s wanting Eddie’s character to believe in her. She’s looking for somebody to validate what she’s doing.

    7) Pete Davidson Explains There Was A Lot Of Improv While Filming – A Lot Of Which Did Not Make The Final Cut Of The Movie

    When asked about improvising on set, Pete Davidson admits that he and Eddie Murphy had a lot of moments where they just went off, saying random things. A lot of them did not make the final cut, but they still think about them.

    Pete Davidson: Oh, a lot of stuff. I was saying some foul stuff. Some of it’s in there. Tim was very trusting to all of us. We would get one as scripted and then he would just let us have fun and go off. I think some of the best moments in the film are just us all messing around. That Marshawn Lynch one with the whole twin thing. Or Eddie when he was like, jiggle the back, make the back jiggle. That killed me. When you’re changing the tire, and you said like maybe to a passing car, I don’t read as white, that was hilarious. I just had a lot of fun, and I appreciated Tim’s trust. And it made the movie really easy and fun to film.

    With a comedy like ‘The Pickup’ there must be a lot of improv, especially because of the cast. While one might think this would make it harder to edit, Tim Story says that he just respected the comedy rules.

    Tim Story: I’m a slave to the comedy rules. You put it together. If it works and an audience laughs, we keep it. If it doesn’t work, we get rid of it. That’s what’s fun. As you trim off all the fat, you end up with something that just makes it great. But that’s what’s also great about what you saw a lot between Eddie and Pete, and obviously Keke, is that they just give you these nuggets. But at the same time, what’s fun about it is they’re also very surgical. Once they lock into what makes the scene work, they just give you more of that.

    Eddie Murphy: My first impression wasn’t on the set with Pete. I knew him from the show, from SNL. And Keke, I didn’t know all the different stuff that Keke did. I’d seen that Pimp series that she did. I was like, that’s the girl from Pimp. She’s good. So when she got on the set, it was like, oh, wow, yeah, this girl is good. Then it was like, oh, she hosts this game show, too. Then I watched the game show, and it was a totally different human being. She has a persona that she does for the game show, and it’s a great game show host, but she’s nothing like that. And then she’s nothing like she is in the movie. Off camera, she’s nothing like any of the stuff that she does. So I’ve been tripping off of her. And she sings and all that. Actually, I was like that when I was her age.

    Keke Palmer: I could cry, to be quite honest with you. There’s nothing better. Eddie is literally the blueprint. I remember watching ‘Trading Places’. Like I said, I’ve grown up on all his movies and his impact. He’s done things that they would never be done again. And to be around him and to also see how he’s had the longevities he’s had, and still reserve himself. When Eddie gets on stage, he’s performing. He’s giving you all he’s got. Then when he’s done, he’s got his family. He’s got his kids.

    Producer Courtney Solomon discusses how Maya will evolve through the next two chapters, explaining that we have seen her as a victim, and she is going to become so much more than that.

    Courtney Solomon: We did ‘Chapter One’ for the reason we did ‘Chapter One’. It is what it is and she is a victim. But what if, unlike a normal final girl, where in act one of the movie, suddenly they’re killing everybody. Is that really real? I’m not saying it’s not fun. I love those movies. Don’t get me wrong. But what we were trying to do is say, how long would that really take? So let’s just make her a victim in the first movie. Even then, a normal person goes to kill another person, even to defend themselves. How easy is that transition in real life? If you lined up 100 people, how many would really do it? How many would really have the guts to pick up a knife and stab you in the chest and kill you? So actually, we’re deep in character in chapter two and chapter three. You’re seeing somebody that by the end of this thing, and also just for how disturbing the original Strangers was, Chapter two is intense as hell, but it’s a bridge. Chapter three is really disturbing and twisted in a really good way.

    Madelaine Petsch admits that the most challenging part of filming one large movie, that is being released in three parts, at the same time, was trying to keep everything straight. They did not film back-to-back, but rather one on top of each other.

    Madelaine Petsch: Honestly, making sure I understand where I am in the story. But the minute I walked into it being one long film, one insatiably long film, I was able to really understand how to break down the character. But it was really about making sure that I was constantly in the right development and right stage of her at all times. So I had like probably 150 pages of notes. And that’s me being conservative. I brought a thick binder to set every day. That was like, OK, today we’re shooting scene two from movie three. Let me go back and look at what happened. I had all these notes of everything that was going on so I could always make sure I knew I was informed by the decisions she’d made previously, but also did not know what was coming next.

    Getting to expand on the lore of the Strangers is something that Director Renny Harlin was most excited to explore.

    Renny Harlin: We wanted to make a four and a half hour movie that is broken into three chapters that really in an extraordinary way gets to explore, first of all, the victim and what happens to a person who gets brutally attacked like this and how far can they go until they snap. And then also to explore the strangers in this case and not to tell the audience everything about them and give reasons like, oh, why are they doing this? Because serial killers, they are random killers. They don’t do it for revenge or any normal reason like that. But to be able to expand all these things was just a fantastic opportunity.

    ‘The Toxic Avenger’ reimagining is taking over Hall H on Thursday July 24th from 5:30pm to 6:30pm. San Diego Comic-Con attendees will get an exclusive first look at the film, but that is not all.     Master storyteller Stephen King’s first novel finally hits the big screen in ‘The Long Walk‘, from visionary director Francis Lawrence (‘The Hunger Games’ franchise films) and adapted by screenwriter JT Mollner (‘Strange Darling‘).   • ‘Supergirl’ Could Take Place At The Same Time As ‘Superman’

    DC Studios co-CEO has a way with teasing upcoming projects without shoving them down viewers’ throats, which is why it came as no surprise to most when Kal-El’s cousin, Kara Zor-El, made a brief appearance at the end of ‘Superman‘. Her solo film will release in theaters in 2026, making this the perfect way to introduce her and allow fans to get to know the DCU version of her, as well as the (unhealthy) relationship that she has with Krypto.

    Milly Alcock plays Supergirl, who stops by the Fortress of Solitude to pick up her dog, Krypto, after leaving him with her cousin Kal-El (David Corenswet) so she can go out partying – at least that is what she appears to have been doing. Anyone who has read the graphic novel that the 2026 film is based on, ‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’, already knows this version of Kara.

    Taking into consideration the events of the graphic novel’s storyline, ‘Supergirl‘ could take place during ‘Superman’. However, because of Krypto’s important role in the plot, at least part of it will likely take place after it.

    Supergirl’s Cameo In ‘Superman’ Introduces A Comic Book Accurate Kara

    Kara showing up drunk and disorderly at the end of ‘Superman’ has stirred up quite a conversation among audiences. For those who have not read ‘Woman of Tomorrow’, I can certainly see why this would take people by surprise. This version of her is much darker than others. She is not the polar opposite of the CW version, played by Melissa Benoist, but she is not very similar to her either.

    The graphic novel opens with Kara drunk at a bar on a red sun planet, something that Kal-El claims is one of her favorite past times when she returns for Krypto. She is a mess, going so far as to cuss at Superman while thanking him for watching her dog. This easily comes as a shock for those that are not familiar with her darker side, but for the fans of this particular comic book storyline, seeing her in this state is exciting.

    It means that DC Studios is not going to shy away from going there, which is necessary to tell the story correctly. Supergirl has not had an easy life, and letting viewers in on her past trauma, and the mental state this has left her in, is the perfect way to explore the ‘Woman of Tomorrow’ story. The themes are going to be heavy, and it is potentially a tough pill to swallow for those who prefer a lighter version of the character, but DC needs to takes risks right now. Thankfully, it seems like they are willing to do it.

    Knowing how things play out in the graphic novel is a bit of a cheat, but because of this, there is a good chance these two films can overlap. When we first meet Kara in ‘Superman’ she is drunk, having spent some time on a red sun planet partying. Because of her Kryptonian powers, this is something she cannot do on a planet with a yellow sun. Kal-El explains in the film, but essentially the rays of the sun will heal her so quickly that the alcohol is never able to take effect.

    There is a decent chance that ‘Supergirl’ will start before she makes her way to Earth to pick up Krypto. It will take the time to explore this side of Kara, including her reasoning for partying so hard. We will see that dark part of her, learning just enough about it before she goes and collects Krypto.

    After she leaves Earth, things are sure to get even rougher for her, as she looks deep inside herself and is forced to confront her childhood trauma. If it sticks closely to the graphic novel, there will be flashbacks as well, letting viewers in on her bringing up and what that has done to her.

    Krypto’s Comic Book Storyline Is The Main Hint That ‘Supergirl’ Might Take Place After ‘Superman’

    Without giving too much away, Krypto is a major catalyst for the events of the graphic novel that ‘Supergirl’ is going to be based on. It is because of this, that the odds of Kara’s movie taking place entirely during the events of ‘Superman’ start to dwindle. Yes, there could certainly be some overlap, but Krypto is too important to the story being told to not be a part of her movie at all.

    ‘Superman’ has now established that Krypto is Kara’s dog, a key factor in the graphic novel. He is a major part of this darker Supergirl story and will likely be included in the film. Not only has James Gunn already stated that this film is a darker take on the character, the version of her that was seen in ‘Superman’ seems to be the final bit of proof.

    Whether ‘Supergirl’ and ‘Superman’ do indeed overlap or not, one thing is for sure, DC Studios is going all in on this darker side of Kara. There is still plenty of time to pick up the graphic novel and check it out before ‘Supergirl”s 2026 release – if you don’t mind potential spoilers that is.

    Marvel fans have been waiting what feels like forever for ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps‘, so it came as no surprise when the team was introduced a little bit early into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, during the end-credit sequence of ‘Thunderbolts*‘. Even though all we got was a glimpse of their ship entering the atmosphere, excitement rippled through social media thanks to the fandom.

    While we cannot say for sure yet who is on The Fantastic Four ship and how exactly the events of both films will connect, we can make some pretty good guesses. One thing is for sure, the speculation that the majority of ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’ is not set in the Marvel universe we know and love must be accurate, considering The New Avengers team reveals the ship is an interdimensional ship.

    For those who do not recall, the end of ‘Thunderbolts*’ teases the arrival of Marvel’s first family by literally bringing them into the MCU, which was a shock to many. The team is now called The New Avengers and is comprised of Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen), John Walker (Wyatt Russell), Red Guardian (David Harbour), and Bob, also known as Sentry/Void (Lewis Pullman).

    When the team is notified that there is a space crisis, it is then discovered that an interdimensional ship has made its way into the Earth’s atmosphere. A close-up on the ship reveals The Fantastic Four logo. There are no more details other than that, which has set the internet ablaze with speculation.

    But Who Could Actually Be On The Fantastic Four Ship?

    There are many theories about who is actually arriving via The Fantastic Four ship. Most fans do not believe that it will actually be the first family, which includes Reed Richards (Pedro Pascal), Sue Storm (Vanessa Kirby), Johnny Storm (Joseph Quinn), and Ben Grimm (Ebon Moss-Bachrach). We know that Sue Storm is not only pregnant with her first born, Franklin Richards, in ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’, but also that she births him because he is seen as a baby in some of the TV spots and trailers.

    Comic book readers know how smart this young child is, so it is not far-fetched to think that he is alone on that ship, off looking for help for his planet now that Galactus (Ralph Ineson), the planet eating, monsterous villain, has come to devour it. That said, I highly doubt that is accurate.

    Others think that Franklin might be on the ship with Doctor Doom (Robert Downey Jr.), which will be revealed during the end-credit scene of ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’. While there is a good chance the connection of the two movies will be confirmed during the end-credit scene, not having the core four characters be on the ship is unlikely. That said, the possibilities are (almost) endless.

    Looking at the trailers that have been revealed to the public, it can be inferred that Sue Storm is pregnant when Silver Surfer (Julia Garner) arrives to tell the planet that they will be consumed by Galactus soon, but that she gives birth shortly after, because Franklin is shown later on, several times. However, fans have learned to never trust a Marvel trailer, because if you remember, Hulk was shown fighting in the ‘Avengers: Infinity War‘ trailer and yet he was not in the entire movie. Not even once.

    The greatest possibility is that the entire family is on board the ship, with Doom hot on their tails – he has to arrive in the MCU somehow before ‘Avengers: Doomsday‘. This would mean that their home universe was destroyed and they needed to find somewhere else to live, an easy task for Reed Richards. If they did indeed defeat Galactus, then there is a chance Doom has kidnapped Richard using the family’s ship, and they will be eventually following behind it.

    Will Galactus Appear In Any Other MCU Projects?

    The most likely scenario out of all of the above is that Galactus succeeds in consuming the home of The Fanastic Four, forcing them into another dimension. Possibly to save only themselves, or some people that they were able to rescue (similar to how Thor saved some Asgardians after their home was destroyed).

    If indeed Galactus has survived, this means that he has the ability to return in the Marvel Cinematic Universe down the line. Considering that he is one of the most powerful, and most beloved Marvel villains, it would be smart to keep him around. The Fantastic Four might be his biggest rival in the comics, but they are not the only one. Seeing him come back, much like Thanos, is something fans would love to see, no matter who he is going up against.

    Whatever happens in ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’, we will not have to wait much longer to find out, as the film releases in theaters on July 24th.

    ‘Smurfs’ receives a 4 out of 10 stars.

    Coming exclusively to theaters on July 18th, it should come as no surprise to anyone that ‘Smurfs‘ is geared towards a much younger audience.

    Directed by Chris Miller, and featuring the voices of many talented actors including Rihanna (Smurfette), James Corden (No Name), Nick Offerman (Ken), and John Goodman (Papa Smurf), ‘Smurfs’ is designed to capture the hearts of its target audience, which is young children.

    ‘Smurfs’ was made to introduce a whole new generation to to the lovable blue creatures that sometimes go up against evil wizards. On paper this concept might sound silly, but many of us grew up with our own version of the Smurfs, and it is nice that the younger generation has theirs now, as well.

    Director Chris Miller knows his way around an animated feature, having worked on many including ‘Puss in Boots‘ and ‘Shrek the Third‘, so expectations were high going into this one.

    One thing that every parent knows is that little kids do not have a long attention span. Because of that, animated features need to be able to keep their attention with bright colors, humor geared towards them, and action sequences. There needs to be something going on at all times or they will start to lose interest.

    Something that ‘Smurfs’ does is keep moving, that is for sure, but because of this, it loses a lot of the explanation and exposition that is needed to properly tell the story. For those that do not know (or remember) the lore of Smurfs, some key plot points will not hit as hard – or even make sense.

    The main message of the movie is taking the time to find your thing, and what you bring to the table. Smurfs have names based on their personality traits. For example, Brainy Smurf, Hefty Smurf, and Grouchy Smurf. No Name has tried thousands of things, but has not yet discovered what he is good at, which is why he is nameless at the start of the film.

    The confusion comes with other Smurfs having names like Ron and Ken, so why doesn’t No Name at least have a regular name until he finds his thing? This is never explained and while kids probably will not pick up on it, parents are sure to be perplexed.

    The animation itself is simple enough, but looks great on the big screen. ‘Smurfs’ is bright, colorful, and vibrant. Even when scenes take place in the evil Gargamel and Razamel’s lairs, it never gets too dark or scary. Later in the film, the plot points find a way to let the animators explore a few different styles. This is the best scene in the movie. It’s equal parts fun and creative.

    While adults are sure to be rolling their eyes at many of the corny dad jokes being told, kids will be cracking up. This movie leans into the type of humor that it knows its audience wants, for better or worse.

    Cast and Performances

    ‘Smurfs’ has a star-studded cast that includes many of the greatest actors working today. With so many Smurfs in the village, some of them only have a line or two to deliver, but they all still bring their A-game.

    John Goodman voices the beloved Papa Smurf. This character is very well known, which you would think would add some pressure to the role, but he voices him perfectly. John Goodman’s voice is soothing and very fatherly that it instantly works.

    James Corden does a great job as No Name, who is struggling throughout most of the movie. He brings a timidness to him that is needed to believe his journey. One of the most memorable characters is Mama Poot, voiced by the always hilarious Natasha Lyonne. She knows how to deliver a punchline, even if the line written is silly.

    The trailers teased that this movie was going to be a musical, going so far as to cast the incredibly talented Rihanna in the lead as Smurfette. From the start, it was clear that music was going to be the main focus, and while there are some songs kids will be singing on repeat, none of them standout as the hits of the summer.

    Rihanna does a decent job as Smurfette, making her a likable enough character who encourages No Name throughout the film. That said, the script she is given does the character no favors, causing her backstory to feel rushed and come out of nowhere. Still, Rihanna does what she can with what she is given.

    Final Thoughts

    ‘Smurfs’ is a good introduction to these characters for a new generation, but it is also lacking so much of what older generations love about them. The story is rushed and lacks a lot of explanation that is needed in order for it to make sense. It isn’t all bad though as the animation is pretty, Rihanna can sing (we all know that), and the messages of never giving up on yourself are important.

    Despite a script filled with dad jokes that will land with the kids and leave adults rolling their eyes, it has its moments. If there were to be more movies in the franchise, kids will surely gobble them right up.

    Say what you will, ‘Smurfs’ certainly knows what its target audience wants, and delivers on it.

    ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ is so beloved and iconic to the horror genre that a follow-up is immediately going to make people wonder if it was necessary. There was a sequel, titled ‘I Still Know What You Did Last Summer‘ which came out in 1998, closely after the 1997 original, but this is a modern story, taking place in 2025. Several other horror movies have thrived by continuing to release movies, like ‘Scream‘ and ‘Saw‘, and this franchise is trying to do the same.

    Finding a way to bring some of the original cast back, in a way that not only makes sense but features them as prominent characters in the story rather than cameos, is one of the most exciting things about ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’. It allows the movie to feel more like a transition from the old to the new. Seeing Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. back on screen together, giving these young teens advice on how to find the killer, is enough to make any fan feel the nostalgia.

    To no one’s surprise, ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ features an accident in which the teens are involved in the death of a stranger early on. The tone is dark and intense but quickly shifts after time jumps to a year in the future. This feels unsettling at first, but once you realize the rest of the movie is going not going to take itself that seriously, it is easy to get back on board.

    With so many characters to keep track of and hints that basically anyone around them could be involved, things could have easily gone off the rails. Thankfully, they do not.

    Slashers like this are meant to keep the audience guessing, never giving them all of the details they need to actually put the pieces of the puzzle together until the right time comes. ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ obliges by this unspoken rule, making it nearly impossible to know who is wearing the fisherman slicker until the writer, Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, wants you to know.

    As a director, Jennifer Kaytin Robinson knows how to create a suspenseful environment, something we saw her do in ‘Do Revenge’. The stalking and murder sequences, which everyone comes to this type of movie for, deliver. The are thrilling, suspenseful, fun, and of course, a little bit gory.

    With such a large ensemble cast, it is easy enough for a character to get lost in the shuffle. That never happens in ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ as each one is given the time to shine whether it is during their murder or a big reveal that they are the one doing the killing.

    Both the orginal cast and the newcomers have a part to play, and each actor does so perfectly. Making the returning cast such a big part of the plot is the perfect way to tie this to the 1997 film, truly making them feel connected.

    While some of the death scenes get a little over the top, and certain one liners are more corny than serious, that is the tone of ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ so it works. It all feels intentional.

    ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ is a great welcome back to the franchise. Sure, there was a series in 2021 with the same name, but we can forget that ever existed. This movie captures the same feel as the original, with a little modernizing. It leans into cheesy moments and horror tropes, but in a way that makes sense for what it is trying to accomplish.

    In the end, audiences are sure to shocked at the big reveal, which is all you can ask for in a slasher like this. The cast does a wonderful job ushering a new generation of fans into the franchise, while the returning cast drizzles on the nostalgia. One thing is for sure, everyone making this movie had a lot of fun, and chances are most viewers will have just as much fun watching it.

    It is important to note that there is a very exciting mid-credit sequence which will lead to the future of the franchise.

    ‘Wicked‘ is based on the book by Gregory Maguire and musical by the same name, and while it does take elements from both, it leans more heavily into adapting the musical. Book fans tend to not love the musical as much and vice versa. This is because a lot of things were changed to make it work better for the stage, including removing some of the political plot points, especially when it comes to the animal rights, and completely changing the ending to give it the classic Hollywood ending that audiences like to see.

    The book came first, and because of that, it is the true story in the mind of most readers. It goes more in depth and is unafraid to push boundaries when needed. Surely ‘Wicked: For Good‘, the upcoming film sequel starring Ariana Grande as Glinda and Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba, will deliver the musical ending, but if director Jon M. Chu was willing to take a risk with the book ending, it would be the better option. Here’s why.

    Even for those who have not read book or seen the musical, ‘Wicked’ made it quite clear that Elphaba and Fiyero (played by Jonathan Bailey), fall in love. By the time he arrives to Shiz, however, he is already married with children. The two end up having an affair, but he is spoken for.

    During the resistance, he is murdered by the Wizard’s secret police, the Gale Force. Elphaba casts a spell to try to save him, and she believes it succeeds, turning him into the Scarecrow. After waking up from a coma (and birthing their baby, who goes to live with their family, which is detailed further in the second book, ‘Son of a Witch’), she sends the flying monkeys after the Scarecrow. When they tear him apart and realize that is not the case, Elphaba snaps, completely becoming the Wicked Witch of the West. This was the straw the broke the camel’s back so to speak, no pun intended.

    She descends into evil here, feeling like the Wizard (Jeff Goldblum), and the government, has taken everything from her. When Dorothy shows up, she panics and throws water at Elphaba, melting her and killing her. A tragic end to a tragic tale. Throughout the book, whenever she cries, even from when she was a baby, water burns her and hurts her. This is something the movie, and musical, completely ignores. The reason why is so that they can change the ending of her story.

    In the musical, Elphaba’s spell was successful and Fiyero becomes the Scarecrow. The rest of Dorothy’s friends have a connection to the witch as well. The Cowardly Lion is the lion cub that her and Fiyero saved at Shiz, something that remains the same from the book, and the Tin Man is Boq (Ethan Slater). Nessarose gives him a love potion, hoping he will fall in love with her, but it shrinks his heart and transforms him instead. In the book, he is a former woodchopper named Nick Chopper, who has his limbs replaced with tin after being cursed.

    Elphaba is still distraught over the events of the Wizard and the government and what they are doing to the animals of Oz, taking away their rights and their voices, but she has also simply had enough. When she learns that a young girl named Dorothy is coming to attempt to kill her, she goes along with it, planning out a way to escape Oz once and for all.

    When the bucket of water is thrown on her, she hides under a trap door, making it look like she has melted away and died. Fiyero, who is now the Scarecrow, helps her escape and the two live together, happily ever after. While she surely misses Glinda, and Glinda thinks she is dead, she still gets to live with the love of her life away from all the things she despises about Oz.

    Why The Book Ending Would Best Serve ‘Wicked: For Good’

    For the most part, those that read the book first prefer the book and those that watch the musical first prefer the musical. There are many reasons, however, that ‘Wicked: For Good’ should lean into the darker ending and embrace what the book has to offer.

    First of all, because of these changes, it would be nearly impossible to adapt the other books in the series. ‘A Lion Among Men’ could possibly become a sequel, telling the story of the Cowardly Lion, and ‘Elphie: A Wicked Childhood’ a prequel, but ‘Son Of A Witch’ and ‘Out Of Oz’ are completely off the table, now that Elphaba lives. These books expand on the world of Oz and tell intriguing stories that would make for great movies, but they need the right set-up to truly work.

    It is difficult to pull off a dark ending in a way that will not make the readers want to throw their books out the window. Most interpretations of ‘Wicked’ are that Elphaba has finally found peace now. She has gone through so much in her life, losing everyone around her and watching her government rip the rights away from the animals that she loves. In the end she snaps, and then is finally laid to rest. While this is not exactly a happy ending, it fits her story and changing it simply does not feel right.

    The saying the book is always better than the movie is a saying for a reason. If ‘Wicked: For Good’ chooses to let Elphaba die, it will be dark and tragic, yes, but it is also the story that was meant to be told and opens the door for more to come.

    There has been a lot of internet chatter about comic book movie fatigue, but DC Studios is hoping to fix that with reboot of their universe. The DCU is kicking off with one of the most well-known and beloved characters, Superman, which is a brilliant move.

    That said, it is hard not to be concerned that perhaps James Gunn was wearing too many hats in the making of ‘Superman’. Despite the massive pressure it must have been, it is completely understandable why he would want to write and direct the first DCU film: ‘Superman’ is going to set the tone for the future and DC Studios needs it to succeed. It would be difficult to hand over the reins and trust someone else to do it.

    Well, DC fans everywhere can finally breathe because ‘Superman’ is a fantastic movie, boasting incredible lead performances, epic action sequences, and a story that will leave audiences feeling all the feels. Plus, stick around for that end-credit scene.

    One of the main reasons that ‘Superman’ works so well is the reason Tom Holland‘s ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming‘ did: It is not an origin story. Everyone knows how Superman came to Earth, and while this is, of course, addressed in the film, it is not the main focus. We hear about Kal-El’s parents and how they sent him away from a dying planet, and yes, they do have a key involvement in the plot, but we are not forced to sit through another coming of age story abotu a young Clark Kent.

    When ‘Superman’ starts, Kent has already been publicly saving the world as Superman for three years. This is all established via a few words on the screen at the very beginning of the movie. He has been dating Lois Lane, who knows his true identity, for three months. The best part is, it doesn’t feel like we are being dropped into the middle of a story. Everything needed to establish the world and the characters are there, and we can now get into the good stuff, Superman’s struggle with simply wanting to do the right thing.

    James Gunn knows how to handle an ensemble cast. He has proven this time and time again. He is a brilliant writer, which is evident in the script. The way the characters banter with one another helps to make us feel as if we are in an already established world. They know each other, they have history, all of which adds a believability to the story being told.

    The story itself is relatable and strangely relevant in today’s climate. It is slightly political, but never polarizing, as it mostly debates if Superman has the right to protect the people of Earth and dives into what his motives are. Lex Luther hates him and wants to take him down by whatever means necessary. While they meet for the first time in the film, thanks to the writing, this is another believable relationship.

    The set pieces are massive and detailed, which makes sense given the reported $225 million budget. These, coupled with James Gunn’s knowledge of DC Comics and the world his movie is in, makes for some truly unforgettable moments.

    David Corenswet was born to play Superman, there is no doubt about that. He does such a great job of capturing the struggle and the frustration when he needs to, but also the humanity and strength as well. This version of Clark Kent is one of the best and is sure to go down in history as a fantastic casting choice.

    At the same time, Rachel Brosnahan brings something to Lois Lane that is real, raw, and very likable. She is a tough cookie, and a journalist before anything else, but is her relationship with Clark that will warm the hearts of viewers. Chemistry practically oozes through the screen whenever Lois and Clark are together, whether they are arguing or having deep, meaningful conversations. It has been a long time since two actors have brought something like this to the big screen and it is truly a joy to watch.

    It should come as no surprise that Nicholas Hoult nails his role as Lex Luther.  he does so much of his acting with his eyes, especially in the third act. This character is so consumed with hatred and envy that his blood is practically boiling at all times. Even during the scenes where Lex Luther has the upper hand, Hoult allows that to come through in his performance.

    One of Superman’s most prominent villains, it makes sense that Lex is the featured bad guy in the first DCU film. Nicholas Hoult and David Corenswet are clearly having a lot of fun together in this movie, but not in a goofy or comedic way. When the two come face-to-face, it is impossible not to get chills.

    As for the Justice Gang, as they call themselves, Nathan Fillion (Guy Gardener), Isabela Mercad (Hawkgirl), and Edi Gathegi (Mister Terrific), they bring just the right amount of comedic relief needed to keep the story fun. Mister Terrific is the clear standout of the group, so much so that fans will be begging for him to get a solo movie after ‘Superman’.

    Yes, there are a lot of characters in ‘Superman’, but they all have a role to play in the story and they all do a wonderful job at it. No one feels shoehorned in or like they do not belong. This an already established world with established characters that we are watching, and each person makes sense to be there.

    Mid-Credit and End-Credit Scenes

    ‘Superman’ features a quick mid-credit scene and an end-credit scene. While neither of these sets up for the future of the DCU, or offers anything extremely important, they are worth sticking around for. The mid-credit scene is brief, but sweet. Definitely an “awww” moment. As for the end-credit sequence, it is absolutely hilarious.

    ‘Superman’ gives fans exactly what they are looking for in the first DCU movie. There are incredible action sequences that showcase just how powerful this hero is. At the same time, we get a glimpse into his human side, realizing how similar he is to us despite technically being an alien.

    The acting is top-notch with every actor knowing exactly what their character brings to the story. James Gunn proves, once again, that he knows how to write and direct an ensemble cast and that he knows how to adapt a comic book story for the screen.

    Krpto may not be the best boy, but he is a fun addition to ‘Superman’. He is not overly silly and he is important to the story being told. While the mid-credit and end-credit scenes are just for fun, the end of the movie does offer a glimpse into what is coming next. Superman fans, get ready to kick your feet and giggle as you fall in love with this character all over again.

    After being brought back, M3GAN claims that she never lost her feelings for Cady (Violet McGraw), and is willing to do whatever she needs to in order to earn her forgiveness. In the end, M3GAN sacrifices herself to save Cady, but is that the last fans will see her?

    The very end of ‘M3GAN 2.0’ teases the return of M3GAN, making clear that Blumhouse could turn these films into a trilogy should they want to. Moviefone breaks down how this could be done, and if it is a good idea. The character of M3gan is played by Amie Donald and voiced by Jenna Davis.

    M3gan’s Return In ‘M3gan 2.0’ Explained

    At the end of ‘M3GAN‘, the body of M3GAN was killed but it was then hinted that she had uploaded herself into one of the smart devices so that she could come back at a later time. ‘M3GAN 2.0’ takes place two years later and M3GAN has indeed found a way to return.

    She has taken over the new smart home that Gemma (Allison Williams) has rented for her and Cady. M3GAN waits to make her presence known until she is needed when the government breaks into their house to try to bug Gemma’s laptop. It turns out that the plans for M3GAN were used to build AMELIA and after the government aquired this new robot, they learned she was a trojan horse, and went rogue. They need to track down who built AMELIA and what their plans are.

    Gemma keeps M3GAN’s return a secret from Cady, but makes a deal with the AI to put her into a body so that she can help. Over these two years M3GAN has evolved and matured, but still has an objective to protect Cady. Gemma, fairly easily, builds M3GAN a new body after coming to terms with the fact that she really does need her help.

    ‘M3GAN 2.0’ Ending Explained

    At the end of ‘M3GAN 2.0’ she realizes that she must sacrifice herself in order to save Cady, as well as the rest of the world. AMELIA is too powerful after consuming the knowledge of the Motherboard, who happens to be the first sentient AI. AMELIA would kill all humans if given the chance, even asking M3GAN to join her stating that they are the same.

    M3GAN refuses, and sets off a powerful EMP that Gemma had placed in her arm as a precaution while holding onto AMELIA, causing them both to be shut down for good. Or so we think.

    The final scene shows Gemma writing a speech in a Word document about what happened when the helpful paperclip we all know pops up to give a suggestion. It doesn’t take long before the clip reveals itself as an animated M3GAN who explains that of course she backed herself up, why wouldn’t she?

    How M3GAN Can Come Back For A Third Movie

    Director Gerard Johnstone, along with his co-writers James Wan and Akela Cooper, were brilliant to leave the door open for more M3GAN. So how could she return in a way that makes sense?

    It was already proven in this film that Gemma can quickly and easily build M3GAN a new body. Yes, M3GAN had collected all of the parts that she needed during those two years while she was living in the virtual world, but who is to say that she could not do that again? Especially with Gemma’s help.

    M3GAN and Gemma seemed to be getting along by the end of the movie, with both Gemma and Cady sad to see the AI go. If Gemma’s smile when she realizes M3GAN’s consciousness still exists is any indication, she would have no problem bringing her back a second time. Cady would, of course, want to see this as well.

    It would be important to shy away from another robot versus robot storyline too quickly, as that has just been done, but revisiting M3GAN’s violent side is not a terrible idea. If the third film where to take place a couple of years down the road, as Cady enters high school, there would be a lot for M3GAN to do. Bullies are brutal at that age. Combine that with Cady potentially starting to date and M3GAN would have a lot of people to keep out of Cady’s life.

    Should Blumhouse Make ‘M3GAN’ A Trilogy?

    As long as there is a good script that offers a fun time at the movies, there is no reason that ‘M3GAN’ shouldn’t be made into a trilogy. People love her, and for good reason. The first film was a massive success for Blumhouse, which is why they greenlit a sequel so quickly.

    There is already going to be a new movie set in the world of M3GAN, ‘Soulm8te‘. However, it is not a direct follow-up by any means. Rather it explores a more adult side of AI and focuses on a relationship that a man has with a lovebot. It seems to be very similar to ‘Companion‘, but perhaps a bit more on the horror side.

    Because Blumhouse is already playing around with this world more, a third M3GAN film would be great to see. Delivering another PG-13 campy horror that leans towards a younger audience is an almost guaranteed succes. Fans would certainly eat it up thanks to her sass and fighting skills.
