GOAT‘ was a big hit with families, becoming one of the best-grossing movies in the genre earlier this year. Now, the film is available to rent or purchase digitally. Moviefone was invited to attend a press day to learn more about the making of this new Sony Pictures Animation film in support of the digital release.  We learned how to draw Will Harris, stepped into the recording booth, and listened to the creatives discuss character creation, arena design, and more.

Moviefone also attended an in-person press conference with filmmakers Tyree Dillihay and Michelle Raimo Kouyate. Here are five things we learned from them.

    1) Andre Iguodala Was A Key Consultant On ‘GOAT’

When talking about coming up with the real life basketball moves that are used in ‘GOAT’, director Tyree Dillihay reveals that they could not have done it without the help of basketball legend Andre Iguodala.

Tyree Dillihay: Anybody know the name Andre Iguodala? He’s won a few championships. He played with Stephen Curry. He’s had an illustrious basketball career. He’s our basketball consultant. He’s a genius. We call him a beautiful basketball mind. And the reason why is because he accomplished more in two hours than we could have accomplished in months. That’s how long we were kind of banging our heads.

    2) Cutting Great Scenes Is Not Easy, But Can Be Necessary

Along with the digital release of ‘GOAT’ comes bonus content, including deleted scenes. One scene in particular introduces the Thorns players and was a favorite of the filmmakers, but after a lot of debate, they decided it needed to go.

Tyree Dillihay: That’s the first time you actually see the locker room. We wanted the audience to experience the locker room and this fulfillment of being a professional through Will’s eyes. If you see it too early, it kind of ruins the surprise. Whereas if you hold it long enough so you can experience it through Will’s eyes, we feel it had greater impact.

Michelle Raimo Kouyate: We also wanted to meet the team through Will’s eyes. Jett, that was a different story because she was the second lead. But the rest of the team, we needed to meet through his eyes.

    3) Steph Curry Had A Lot Of Input On ‘GOAT’

Producer Steph Curry is a busy man, but he still found time to help the filmmakers make ‘GOAT’ the best it could be.

Michelle Raimo Kouyate: He was really instrumental in helping us figure out the reality of the game play. Even though it’s animals, he really helped us with that. He gave us thoughts on what it was like to be a new player that was different from everyone else and breaking new ground. He also gave us input on what it’s like to be a superstar with all the pressures that come along with that. And he’s an incredible voice actor. He voices Lenny. So he was very influential.

    4) Tyree Dillihay’s Relationship With His Mother Had A Huge Impact On Will Harris’ Story In ‘GOAT’

(L to R) Michelle Raimo Kouyate and Tyree Dillihay at 'GOAT' filmmaker digital release press conference. Photo: Tessa Smith.
(L to R) Michelle Raimo Kouyate and Tyree Dillihay at ‘GOAT’ filmmaker digital release press conference. Photo: Tessa Smith.

The story of ‘GOAT’ went through a lot of revisions, over 2,000 to be exact. Tyree Dillihay’s relationship with his mother was a big inspiration when rounding out the character of Will Harris.

Michelle Raimo Kouyate: Tyree grew up with a single mom and it was really the essence of that story, Tyree’s story, that mom who believed in him, in a dream that a black kid from Inglewood would become an artist. His mom really believed in him in that way so that was the underpinnings of the story. It was always in what we understood of the character, but we didn’t always have it in the movie. We realized when we were screening it that we needed to bring that into the movie. It gave the character a whole other reason and it gave you an understanding of who he was and how much rode on him.

    5) ‘GOAT’ Is A Love Letter To All The Things Tyree Dillihay Loves

For Tyree Dillihay, ‘GOAT’ is a dream project. He put blood, sweat, tears, and everything he loves into making this film.

Tyree Dillihay: This movie is a love letter to all the things that I love. I love basketball. I love sneaker culture. I love fashion. I love tech. I love the game. I love cartoons. Like everything that I love is in this movie. Talk about a dream project. This is mine. This is me. I’m very happy to be in every single frame of the film because I wanted to feel everything that I love. I hope it exudes through the film. You ever watch a piece of the film and you might get goosebumps? That’s what I’m talking about. There’s been times where we’ve looked at the film, Michelle and I. We’ve cried numerous times. We’ve seen this thing a million times and we keep crying.

Coming to theaters on April 1, ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie‘ is a follow-up to the box office hit, ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie‘, and is based on the 2007 video game Super Mario Galaxy and its 2010 sequel. The film features the returning voices of Chris Pratt as Mario, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, and Anya Taylor-Joy as Peach.

Mario and Luigi are back with a few new friends in ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’. It doesn’t take long to realize that this sequel is even better than the first movie, which felt like more of a set-up than anything else. There are infinite worlds and characters to explore now, and with the addition of fan favorites Rosalina, Yoshi, and Bowser Jr., things have been leveled up.

Everything seems better this time around, which isn’t to say ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ wasn’t good, because it was, but this time Illumination knows what they are doing and they lean into it. Now that viewers know these characters, they can deliver more action, funnier jokes, and a lot of Easter Eggs that fans will love to point out.

    Story and Direction

Rosalina in Nintendo and Illumination’s 'The Super Mario Galaxy Movie', directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic.
Rosalina in Nintendo and Illumination’s ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’, directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic.

When it comes to the story, admittedly, there is not much of one. It is a fairly simple premise, much like the video games. A princess is kidnapped. Chaos ensues. Said princess is rescued. Illumination knows how to keep viewers entertained throughout the film, however, thanks to gorgeous animation, Nintendo Easter Egg cameos and references, and a whole lot of action.

(L to R) Bowser Junior and Bowser in Nintendo and Illumination’s 'The Super Mario Galaxy Movie', directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic.
(L to R) Bowser Junior and Bowser in Nintendo and Illumination’s ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’, directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic.

Thanks to those action sequences, the movie moves very quickly. It never takes a breather or slows down, which makes it the perfect film to take kids to. It is funny and sharp witted, as nearly every joke lands. The story itself is geared towards a younger audience, but gamer parents will be thrilled with all of the references that are packed into it.

    Cast and Performances

(Center) Toad (Keegan-Michael Key) and Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy) in Nintendo and Illumination’s ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’, directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic.

Just as with the first film, the cast never feels as if they are doing impressions of the video game characters. They make them their own, which is what helps this movie to work as well as it does. If that was not the case, the voices would get old very quickly, and it would distract from the story and action.

(L to R) Yoshi (Donald Glover) and the Tostarenan in Nintendo and Illumination’s 'The Super Mario Galaxy Movie', directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic.
(L to R) Yoshi (Donald Glover) and the Tostarenan in Nintendo and Illumination’s ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’, directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic.

The new cast members stick to this as well. Honestly, because of all the action and chaos happening, there is not a whole lot of dialogue, and when there is, it is pretty basic. Still, the cast all does a great job making these characters lovable and entertaining for kids and adults alike.

    Final Thoughts

(L to R) Toad (Keegan-Michael Key), Yoshi (Donald Glover) and Luigi (Charlie Day) in Nintendo and Illumination’s ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’, directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic.

There was never a question as to whether or not ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ would end up getting a sequel, and the same is true about a third movie in the trilogy. Considering ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’ not only sets up for more surprises in the end-credit scenes, but is also more entertaining than its predecessor, we shouldn’t have long to wait for the next movie to be announced.

‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’ recieves a score of 78 out of 100.

Set a few years after the ‘Peaky Blinders‘ series finale, Cillian Murphy returns as Tommy Shelby amidst the chaos of WWII in Netflix’s ‘Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man‘.

    1) Cillian Murphy Says The Film Needed To Justify Itself If They Were Going To Make It

Fans are thrilled to see Tommy Shelby return to the screen, but star Cillian Murphy says he was not going to come back unless the movie was justified.

Cillian Murphy: The luxury of having played him for so long is that all the research is kind of done. You’ve got 13 years of it there. You’ve lived alongside him and you’ve aged alongside him. I’ll never experience that again; it’s really unique. But like the lads were saying, we wanted to make something that would justify its existence. The TV show was so successful and became deeper as it went, so the film needed to justify itself. When we figured out the thematic drive was “family”—a father and son story introducing Duke—we knew we were on the right track.

    2) Steven Knight Always Wanted ‘Peaky Blinders’ To End With A Movie

Steven Knight attends the World Premiere of 'Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man' at Centenary Square on March 02, 2026 in Birmingham, England. Photo by Tristan Fewings/Getty Images for Netflix.

‘Peaky Blinders’ writer and producer admits that his plan was always to end with a movie, during this time period, telling this story.

Steven Knight: I’ve discovered recently that I did an interview after the first series where I said confidently, “We’re going to end this in the Second World War and it’s going to be a movie.” And here we are. I mean, it was very arrogant of me to imagine that would happen, but it’s happened. I always wanted to end it this way—always wanted to end it in Birmingham as the bombs drop. And I think that what we have done is ended this part of the story in a quite magnificent way.

    3) Barry Keoghan Has Wanted To Be A Part Of ‘Peaky Blinders’ For Years

Barry Keoghan in 'Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man'. Photo: Robert Viglasky/Netflix © 2026.
Barry Keoghan in ‘Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man’. Photo: Robert Viglasky/Netflix © 2026.

Actor Barry Keoghan joins the cast of ‘Peaky Blinders’ in this film, but this is something he has wanted for years.

Barry Keoghan: Yeah, it was mad. I remember the screen test, seeing Cillian as Tommy Shelby. It was the first time I’d seen him in person as Tommy Shelby, just looking at me. I was like, “Look at me, I’m new to this!” It’s iconic. I’ve wanted to be part of the TV show or movie for years. I’ve had the “haircut” for about 10 years in my personal life, and I get mistaken that I’m in it already! It’s ironic, isn’t it? But it’s such an honor. It is nerve-wracking and exciting, and there is this anticipation… you just hope you do well.

    4) Tim Roth Did Not Watch ‘Peaky Blinders’ Before Filming ‘Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man’

Tim Roth attends the World Premiere of 'Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man' at Centenary Square on March 02, 2026 in Birmingham, England. Photo by Tristan Fewings/Getty Images for Netflix.
Tim Roth attends the World Premiere of ‘Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man’ at Centenary Square on March 02, 2026 in Birmingham, England. Photo by Tristan Fewings/Getty Images for Netflix.

Tim Roth also joins the cast in the new film, but he approached the role by purposefully not watching the series.

Tim Roth: When I was asked to do it, I hadn’t seen it, but I’d heard about it. I bumped into them when they were filming once and they looked like they were having a lot more fun than I was at the time! But I made the decision not to watch it before joining. I think I would have been more nervous if I’d seen it, to be honest. I came in completely fresh and you walk through this “family door.” More importantly to me, it felt like they were taking it seriously—what Tom and Steve were up to was making a real movie. Full on. The only green screen you saw was to keep the skyscrapers out of the background.

    5) Rebecca Ferguson Was Drawn To This Film For Several Reasons

Rebecca Ferguson attends the World Premiere of 'Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man' at Centenary Square on March 02, 2026 in Birmingham, England. Photo by Kate Green/Getty Images for Netflix.

When asked what it was about ‘Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man’ that pulled Rebecca Ferguson in, she admits it was not just one thing, but many.

Rebecca Ferguson: It’s never one thing. It’s how they all tie together. Steven’s script was so dynamic and challenging. Anything disruptive is interesting in an established environment. My character comes from the outside; she sounds different, she acts differently, but there is a thematic connection. She’s another hurdle for them.

Ever since Tommy Shelby rode off into the sunset to start a new life in ‘Peaky Blinders‘ fans have been asking for more. This is certainly one of Cillian Murphy’s most memorable roles and so seeing him return to the franchise for one last hurrah is nothing short of exciting. With a title as well loved as this one, it was important for ‘Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man’ to fit into this world and feel warranted, rather than a cash grab. Thankfully, from just the first few minutes, it was clear this film was made to complete the story – and it does just that.

Director Tom Harper worked on the first season of ‘Peaky Blinders’ so it was only fitting to see him return to direct ‘Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man’. He knew this world already, even if it had been a while since he was immersed in it, and he does a brilliant job weaving in new characters and celebrating the old ones.

Storywise, this movie is brilliant. Even though the series felt wrapped up enough, there were certainly some unanswered questions and longing to know what happened down the line for Tommy Shelby. ‘Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man’ does a great job of not only providing these answers, but delivering an interesting, entertaining, and action-packed story. It is important to mention that the emotional moments are always allowed to breath. They are never overshadowed by the action.

Cillian Murphy was born to play Tommy Shelby. Fans of the series already know this but for those that were not convinced yet, ‘Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man’ solidifies it. He is absolutely brilliant in this film. He knows this character inside and out, and is a natural on screen.

Barry Keoghan, who plays Tommy’s gypsy son Duke, is a great addition to this world. He is a talented actor who always gives one hundred and ten percent to his roles, and this is no exception. He fits into this world perfectly, and his scenes opposite Cillian Murphy ooze with chemistry. The two of them are brilliant together.

Then there is Rebecca Ferguson. Another fantastic actor who never phones in a performance. She also fits into this world well. We meet her early on and it is impossible not to relate to her from that very moment.

    Final Thoughts

‘Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man’ is sure to make fans of the series very happy. It continues Tommy Shelby’s story, picking up a few years down the road from the series finale, in a way that, simpy put, just makes sense. Everything comes back around to the beginning, bringing this story full circle. It is well acted, well shot, and will have viewers on the edge of their seats from start to finish.

‘GOAT’ may be based on Steph Curry’s life, but he doesn’t voice the main character Will, instead, he voices the tallest player on the team, Lenny, which he admits was not easy.

Stephen Curry: It’s my first time really doing a, you know, voice acting role. And so that whole experience, it was challenging. It was something that I knew was gonna have to be pulled out of me in the sense of finding that true, authentic Lenny voice. But once I got there, it was an experience I’ll remember for a long time.

    2) Gabrielle Union Says Greatness Is Different For Everyone

One of the key messages of ‘GOAT’ is to embrace your greatness, rather than trying to copy someone elses. Gabrielle Union, voice of Jett, discusses how Will encourages her character to be herself.

Gabrielle Union: Will makes me have to go back and get in the lab. His greatness does not look like Jett’s, and Jett’s greatness does not look like Will’s. And it brings out that fire. Like, put up or shut up. You’re only as great as your last game. And I’ve watched it in my own life. I’ve watched it in my household.

    3) Patton Oswalt Created A Key Backstory Moment For His Character

Patton Oswalt voices the head coach of the Thorns, Dennis, who has lost power to Jett. In order to help voice him, he came up with a small, key moment, in his backstory.

Patton Oswalt: It’s clear that on day one, not that I write a big biography of this character, it’s clear that on day one, he lost a battle with Jett that lasted two seconds. She immediately put her foot and he’s like, “Okay, I’m just gonna work on this position and operate at this level.” And then during the movie, he has to kinda re-remind himself, wait, no, I’m the coach, I need to be helping these players. And what Gabrielle said about going back into the lab, I wish I had that phrase during all my interviews earlier ’cause that’s so perfect. But he has to teach these players, you each need to get out of your own way.

    4) Caleb McLaughlin Loves How Jett Inspires Will

(L to R) Will (Caleb McLaughlin) and Jett (Gabrielle Union) in Columbia Pictures and Sony Pictures Animation’s in ‘Goat’. © 2025 CTMG, Inc. All Rights Reserved.

‘GOAT’ subverts the norm and features a male rookie looking up to a powerful female character. Caleb McLaughlin discusses the dynamic between Will and Jett.

Caleb McLaughlin: She set the bar so high for him in his life that everything that he’s doing in his life is to be like her, is to be great, is to get into roarball. And I think she just sets the bar and brings out the ambition, the drive for what that is. What it is to be a GOAT. You know what I mean? What you have to do to be a GOAT. It’s not easy.

    5) Tyree Dillihay Added In The Actors’ Quirks Where Possible

Director Tyree Dillihay wanted to make sure that each character featured a little bit of the person voicing them. So, for example, Caleb McLaughlin is a bit of a germaphobe, so he made Will have a small thing about germs.

Tyree Dillihay: With Patton, with Gabrielle, with Caleb, with all of our cast, I tried to find little things about them that we can authentically infuse in a character that didn’t break anything. It just seemed natural. It’s these little quirks that make them seem more real, more identifiable, more specific.

If the ‘GOAT’ trailer did not catch your interest, you are not alone. The marketing for this film has made it seem a lot more silly and childish than it actually is. Sure, there are jokes weaved in for younger audiences, but this a family movie, rather than one made for kids.

Adults have plenty of jokes included for them as well, and the overall message is extremely heartwarming. While ‘GOAT’ has a lot of laugh-out-loud moments, there are also some that will have viewers reaching for the tissues.

    Story and Direction

While it might seem like this is a story we have all heard before, ‘GOAT’ offers a fresh and unique take on the message of following your dreams. In a world where big animals play Roarball (a play on basketball), a small goat named Will (Caleb McLaughlin) wants nothing more than to take the court.

The movie is not about him working hard to get there, as he is drafted to the Thorns early on. The real message lies in learning to find your place in the world, not listening to others, and being yourself. As he gets to know his teammates, they all grow as one, but also individually.

One of the subtle inclusions, but a powerful one nonetheless, is the fact that the Roarball league is co-ed. Will looks up to Jett as his inspiration. He wants to be like her when he grows up. This normalizes boys and girls, women and men, playing together as one and getting along with each other. It is just one more way that ‘GOAT’ subverts the tropes of a sports movie.

There are plenty of basketball Easter eggs (directors Tyree Dillihay and Adam Rosette certainly know their stuff), but thanks to the brilliant writing, you do not need to know basketball to understand the story or the jokes. Music also has a strong presence in the film, whether it be the inclusion of the a song or the unforgettable score.

Caleb McLaughlin voices Will Harris, the main character, and while he is an amazing live action actor, you never know if that can translate over to voice acting. They are two completely different animals (pun intended). Thankfully, Caleb is sure to blow audiences away as he brings the perfect amount of heart and humor to the film.

Gabrielle Union is a powerhouse and an absolutely brilliant choice for the voice of Jett. A woman who knows exactly what she wants, even if she does a bit of an inflated ego at times. As for the rest of the team: Steph Curry who voices Lenny, David Harbour who voices Archie, Nick Kroll who voices Modo, and Nicola Coughlan who voices Olivia, all bring something special to the table. Creating a voice team that has a comedic and heartfelt chemistry.

‘GOAT’ is far more heartfelt than the marketing leads viewers to believe. Thanks to an incredible cast chemistry, well timed jokes, and gorgeous animation, it sets the bar high for the family films of 2026.

‘GOAT’ receives a score of 85 out of 100.

Simon Williams is one of the lesser known Marvel characters. He is not Iron Man, Captain America, or even Hawkeye. So to focus a series on him comes with a little bit of risk from the studio. That said, this is the perfect series to allow Marvel to embrace their comedic side. Simon Williams is an actor, which means that ‘Wonder Man’ gets to dive into a metaness that industry folks, and Marvel fans, will enjoy.

    Script and Direction

Directors Destin Daniel Cretton and James Ponsoldt know exactly what they are doing with a show like this. Those who work in the industry will love all of the references to the audition process, crafty, and what goes on behind the camera.

The story itself is intriguing from the start, and only gets better the longer it goes on. While there are some things that could be fine tuned, the overall pacing and timing of reveals is brilliant.

What is best described as this season’s standalone episode, episode four, tells a much needed backstory that helps bring clarity to the second half of the season. With exciting guest stars and a dark, twisted, premise, it stands out as the best of the season.

The reason this series works as well as it does is because of the unmatched chemistry between the leads, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Sir Ben Kingsley. They bring both humor and heart to the roles, and the relationship of their character, making it easy for viewers to root for them.

Arian Moayed’s Agent P. Cleary is the perfect villain for a series like this. Fans have seen him time and again in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but he is truly allowed time to shine in ‘Wonder Man’.

‘Wonder Man’ will surely be enjoyed more by those who know the ins and outs of the industry, but it is not written in a way that will alienate viewers who are not a part of it. Thanks to the great chemistry between the leads and smart writing, this fast-paced sitcom is absolutely worth checking out.

What’s the plot of ‘Wonder Man’?

Aspiring Hollywood actor Simon Williams is struggling to get his career off the ground. During a chance meeting with Trevor Slattery, an actor whose biggest roles may be well behind him, Simon learns legendary director Von Kovak is remaking the superhero film ‘Wonder Man’. These two actors at opposite ends of their careers doggedly pursue life-changing roles in this film as audiences get a peek behind the curtain of the entertainment industry.

Who stars in ‘Wonder Man’ Season 1?

(L to R) Kelly Lynch, director Gus Van Sant, Al Pacino and Colman Domingo attend Row K’s ‘Dead Man’s Wire’ Los Angeles Premiere at The Grove AMC on January 7, 2026 in Los Angeles.

Set in 1977 and based on a true story,  ‘Dead Man’s Wire‘ follows Tony Kiritsis, a former real estate developer who puts a dead man’s switch on himself and the mortgage banker who did him wrong, while demanding $5 million and a personal apology.

Moviefone was in attendance at a recent press conference, in which director Gus Van Sant and writer Austin Kolodney shared behind-the-scenes details and discuss adapting a true story for the screen.

    1) Gus Van Sant Was Interested In ‘Dead Man’s Wire’ Because It Was Going To Be Filmed Almost Immediately

    dead-mans-wire

When asked about what drew him to the project, Gus Van Sant shockingly explains that it mostly had to do with the shooting timeline.

Gus Van Sant: I joined on with the knowledge that it was shooting in Louisville, Kentucky. And it was shooting very quickly. This was September of last year, and Cassian Elwes, the producer, was planning to shoot in November. I was intrigued by the whole situation of having to do something right away and not even knowing what it was about. Kind of… I didn’t really say yes. I did read the script before I said yes.

    2) Austin Kolodney First Heard About Tony Karitsis On A Podcast

Bill Skarsgård as Tony Kiritsis in 'Dead Man's Wire'. Photo: Row K Entertainment.
Bill Skarsgård as Tony Kiritsis in ‘Dead Man’s Wire’. Photo: Row K Entertainment.

Writer Austin Kolodney first heard about this true story on a podcast and wondered to himself why it wasn’t a movie. So he wrote a script.

Austin Kolodney: I first heard it mentioned on a podcast. A producer, Jamie Vernon, had mentioned the name and the crime, and I had my antenna up. This is the height of COVID in 2020, during that summer. And I was actively looking for something to write. I had written a couple other features, like smaller indie things that I would want to direct, but I was like, I need to try and get something made soon to pay off credit card debt, get the career started, I can’t just keep Lyft driving. So, I was actively looking for something that I think would be a movie, and when I heard about Tony, went down this rabbit hole, some podcasts, there’s a great dollop episode about him, and then there’s this one YouTube video that I used as a hyperlink, because it had this 5-minute summation of this really grainy texture, archival footage shot, highlight reel ofTony slipping on the ice, and cracking jokes at the cops, and laughing at them, and getting them to laugh with him, and then asking for water, and having to hold the gun and drink it like a baby bird, and for some reason that crystallized the movie for me. I’m like, how has this not been made into a movie? So I started developing it as a movie.

    3) Austin Kolodney Included Hyperlinks To Videos In His Initial Script

    dead-mans-wire
(L to R) Dacre Montgomery as Richard ‘Dick’ Hall and Bill Skarsgård as Tony Kiritsis in ‘Dead Man’s Wire’. Photo: Row K Entertainment

Gus Van Sant says that Austin Kolodney’s inclusion of hyperlinks in the script helped him to understand who Tony Karitsis really was.

Gus Van Sant: You could see very clearly the guy, Tony Karitsis’ personality, partly due to the hyperlinks that were connected in the script to his actual voice. You could hear the real guy, who was very intriguing, and so within just a few moments, I don’t know that I wasn’t conscious of I guess it was obvious that he was a desperate underdog character that resembled other characters that I’d done before.

    4) Austin Kolodney Is Drawn To True Crime, But He Doesn’t Want To Be Pigeonholed In That Genre

    dead-mans-wire
Cary Elwes as Michael Grable in ‘Dead Man’s Wire’. Photo: Row K Entertainment

When asked about what it was that truly interested him about this story, Austin Kolodney admits that he loves true crime, but that he also has the ability to write other genres.

Austin Kolodney: I’d be lying if I said that I didn’t like a good crime movie. A lot of great American films are crime movies, and I don’t know if true crime is necessarily how I want to corner myself as a storyteller. I’ve had a couple other scripts written prior to this one that aren’t at all in this realm. I continue to see, I guess, any article or book or footage of a true event that has a character that is very rich and very textured and feels like someone that I would want to see on the screen for an hour and a half, two hours. That’s what draws me to it. It’s more the person, the criminal, I guess, not necessarily the act of crime, it’s the personality and the three-dimensionality of the person that’s at the center of it, is what draws me to a story.

    5) Bill Skarsgård Almost Wasn’t The Lead Of ‘Dead Man’s Wire’

(L to R) Dacre Montgomery and Bill Skarsgard in 'Dead Man's Wire.' Photo: Row K Entertainment.
(L to R) Dacre Montgomery and Bill Skarsgard in ‘Dead Man’s Wire.’ Photo: Row K Entertainment.

Director Gus Van Sant admits that he thought Bill Skarsgård was great for the lead role of ‘Dead Man’s Wire’, but details how he almost didn’t take the role.

Gus Van Sant: I had tried to get Bill in another film that was simultaneous. It was canceled right about the same time that I was joining onto ‘Dead Man’s Wire’, and I had asked him to play a smaller part, and he said it would be interesting if he wasn’t playing a lead somewhere else. So I was thinking of him for a while, just working with him, and putting him into things where he wasn’t even the lead character. I hadn’t worked with him. In this case, he seemed to work for the lead character. So I turned around and said, oh, there’s a lead character on this one. He was busy. So he was fitting it in between projects. But yeah, he seemed to be game. I mean, partly, maybe because I worked with his dad, Stellan (Skarsgård) in ‘Good Will Hunting‘. He had actually come to the set, but he was like 7 years old. There’s a picture I have of him and the big family that was visiting Stellan.

What is the plot of ‘Dead Man’s Wire’?

The film is inspired by the 1977 Indianapolis hostage standoff involving Tony Kiritsis (Bill Skarsgård) and centers on the escalation of a public confrontation shaped by negotiation, media attention, and law enforcement response.

28 Years Later‘ is enjoyable for what it is, but one of the biggest takeaways is that it was clearly a set-up for the follow-up film, ’28 Years Later: The Bone Temple’. While viewers could surely watch the latter without seeing either of the previous films, they will enjoy it much more if they know the lore and backstories of these characters.

The story picks up almost immediately after the events of ’28 Years Later’ as Sir Lord Jimmy Crystal (Jack O’Connell) is seen putting young Spike (Alfie Williams) to the test. This is a brilliant introduction to the villain of the film, as it becomes clear just how deranged and selfish he is during this fight. His fingers, which is what he calls his child followers, know no better to believe in this man who thinks he is the son of Satan. This sets up for some truly dark, twisted, and gory events that are much on par with the previous two films.

On the other side of things, we have Ralph Fiennes’ Dr. Ian Kelson, whom we got to know a lot about in the previous film. This time he strikes up an unlikely “friendship” with the Alpha Infected Samson (Chi Lewis-Parry). Both of these plot points are captivating in their own way, as we move towards the climax of the film (which does not disappoint). The cinematography and Nia DaCosta’s directing choices are the best in the franchise, without a doubt. Being up close and personal with so many characters allows us to feel what they are feeling, whether it be terror, happiness, or peace.

Jack O’Connell will always and forever make a great villain. His role in ‘Sinners‘ is unforgettable, but he does something so phenomenal in ’28 Years Later: The Bone Temple’ that he will surely be remembered for it as well. This is a career-best performance for him. He is a mentally unstable man who is drawn to violence. Throughout the entire movie, he is captivating, yes, but it is the third act where he really shines.

The same can be said for Ralph Fiennes, who has a lot of incredible roles under his belt, but you have never seen him like this before. What he does, especially in that third act, is going to be talked about for years to come. Chi Lewis-Parry is also given a lot more to play with this time around, and he proves why he should be on many studios’ radars.

While the studio could certainly discover more story to be told, there is no need, as the ending just feels right.

Take one look at the trailer and it is very clear that ‘Primate’ is meant to entertain with bloody, over-the-top kills. It blends genres to create something that is equal parts funny as it is grotesque. With great comedic moments that truly land, and a killer chimpanzee that audiences will never forget, this film is the definition of a good time at the movies.

That said, it will likely not have the same effect for those watching from their couch, as ‘Primate’ is meant to be seen in a packed theater, on a big screen, with fellow movie-goers who have no idea what is going to happen next.

    Story and Direction

The horror genre is often criticized for its lack of story. Usually the plot points are there just to usher you into the next kill, but thankfully ‘Primate’ offers up an entertaining story as well. Lucy travels home with friends to visit her family in Hawaii and no time is wasted before the family chimp, Ben, gets rabies and goes on a rampage.

With something as intense as this, these moments need to be felt. Audiences need to be hiding behind their hands and pushing as far back into their chairs as they can as they hold their breath and wait to see how it all unfolds. Director Johannes Roberts brilliantly creates tension over and over again, utilizing the fact that Troy Kotsur is Deaf to take it to a new level.

Speaking of Troy Kotsur, he is one of the standouts of the film. He delivers an incredible performance in ‘Primate’ as Lucy and Erin’s father. His character is Deaf, and yes, the movie leans into this in fun and unexpected ways. It is wonderful to see this side of him, and the acting range he has after his comedic and lovable character in CODA.

Johnny Sequoyah just might be the next scream queen, as she masterfully takes the lead in ‘Primate’. Viewers will fall in love with Lucy almost immediately, which means that everyone will be rooting for her to make it out unscathed. She is powerful and protective when she needs to be, but she also makes some smart decisions – something we do not often see in horror movies.

(L to R) Victoria Wyant as “Kate” and Johnny Sequoyah as “Lucy” in ‘Primate’ from Paramount Pictures.

‘Primate’ is an intense film that blends the comedy, horror, and thriller genres to create something that begs to be seen on the big screen. Chimpanzees have gone on killing sprees in real life, which makes this movie just believable enough to terrify viewers.

This movie is a wild ride, and genuinely a lot of fun. If you are squeamish though, be warned, it is quite bloody and graphic. Thanks to brilliant performances from Johnny Sequoyah and Troy Kotsur, ‘Primate’ is sure to kick off the 2026 box office in an unforgettable way.

‘Primate’ receives a score of 80 out of 100.
