  • 9 Essential Judy Garland Films

    9 Essential Judy Garland Films

    Warner Bros.

Singer, actress and icon Judy Garland tragically passed away at the far-too-young age of 47, almost 50 years ago on June 22, 1969.

She’s still best known as wide-eyed Kansas girl Dorothy in “The Wizard of Oz,” but don’t miss these other films that showcased her incredible talent and under-appreciated dramatic range.

We look forward to seeing Renée Zellweger playing the star in the biopic “Judy,” which opens in September and is set shortly before Garland’s untimely death.

We can’t recreate the magic of seeing Judy in concert (she was the first woman to win a Grammy Award for Album of the Year for her live album “Judy at Carnegie Hall”),  but she’s immortal, thanks to these films.

    9. “Judgment at Nuremberg ” (1961)

    United Artists

Garland received her second Oscar nomination for this dramatic role in Stanley Kramer‘s film about the real-life trial of Nazi war criminals. On the stand, she is relentlessly interrogated by the imperious German defense attorney (Maximilian Schell, who won a Best Actor Oscar for the role) over her relationship with a Jewish man, which was forbidden under Nazi rule. It’s a brief but heartbreaking performance as she breaks down under his cruel treatment.

    8. “Babes in Arms ” (1939)

    MGM

Judy and Mickey Rooney made several movies together, but this one, in which they play the children of vaudeville performers, is the classic “let’s put on a show” plot we associate with this winning duo. The tunes include “Good Morning” (the same song featured in “Singin’ in the Rain”) and the title track. But maybe skip the unfortunate blackface scene?

    7. “The Pirate ” (1948)

    MGM

Judy and Gene Kelly team up in this terrific (but lesser-known) musical set on a Caribbean island. She plays Manuela, who is unhappily engaged to the unattractive and much older mayor. Kelly is a traveling performer who overhears her obsession with the dreaded pirate Macoco and passes himself off as the very same to win her heart. Surely this inspired “The Princess Bride,” at least a little? The sword-dancing pirate fantasy production number is A+.

    6. “Summer Stock” (1950)

    MGM

Worth your watch just for Judy’s stunning, iconic “Get Happy” number. The film, also about (surprise, surprise) putting on a show, memorably re-teams her with the legendary Gene Kelly.

    5. “The Harvey Girls” (1946)

    MGM

Judy goes out west, becomes a Harvey Girl waitress, sings “On the Atchison, Topeka and the Santa Fe,” goes up against mean “dance hall girl” Angela Lansbury and finds true love in this charming musical.

    4. “The Clock” (1945)

    MGM

Judy shines in her first dramatic role as a woman who falls for a soldier (Robert Walker) who’s on a 48-hour leave in New York City. Made before the war came to an end, its already poignant story is deepened in retrospect by the early deaths of both stars. Directed by husband-to-be Vincente Minnelli (the two were married from 1945 – 1951), with whom she made some of her best films.

    3. “Meet Me in St. Louis” (1944)

    MGM

Garland is simply luminous in this period musical lovingly directed by Vincente Minnelli. When she sings “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,” we might just tear up a little.

    2. “The Wizard of Oz” (1939)

    MGM

Garland would arguably be just as big a star today if she’d only made this one movie: Her version of “Over the Rainbow”  — and her skipping down that Yellow Brick Road — is the stuff that Hollywood magic is made of.

    1. “A Star Is Born” (1954)

    Warner Bros.

No disrespect to Lady Gaga, Barbra Streisand or Janet Gaynor, who all played the leading lady in other versions of this tragic story of love and fame, but Judy tops them all. Her singer-turned-superstar character wins an Oscar in this film (in a devastating scene where her drunken has-been husband upstages her) but it’s one of the greatest mistakes in Oscar history that she didn’t win the award in real life for this performance.

  • First Trailer for Live-Action ‘Lady and the Tramp’ Teases Adventure (And Spaghetti, Of Course)

First Trailer for Live-Action ‘Lady and the Tramp’ Teases Adventure (And Spaghetti, Of Course)

    Disney+

The first trailer for the live-action “Lady and the Tramp” showcases the scenes we expect from the animated original, including a romantic spaghetti dinner and puppy Lady being presented as a gift on Christmas morning.

The era also looks the same as the 1955 film, which was set in 1909. The dogs are real, but talk with some assistance from computer animators.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A2ZDDU34gYw

We also briefly see the live-action versions of the duo’s familiar friends: Trusty the Bloodhound (voiced by Sam Elliott) and Jock the Scottie (Ashley Jensen, a gender-swap from the original).

But we also see some scenes that weren’t in the original, including Lady (voiced by Tessa Thompson) and Tramp (Justin Theroux) taking a trip on a steam boat.

The movie will be available to subscribers when Disney+ debuts on November 12.

Among the voice cast are Benedict Wong as Bull the Bulldog and Janelle Monáe as Peg, a Pekingese puppy. Thomas Mann costars as human Jim Dear, Kiersey Clemons as his wife Darling, and Yvette Nicole Brown as (we presume) her dog-hating aunt.

  • Marvel Confirms Three New Disney+ Series, Including ‘She-Hulk’ and ‘Moon Knight’

Marvel Confirms Three New Disney+ Series, Including ‘She-Hulk’ and ‘Moon Knight’

    Marvel/Disney+

As if the slew of new Marvel shows coming to Disney+ weren’t already massive, the studio just confirmed three new series: “Ms. Marvel” (news of which leaked before the D23 panel), as well as  “She-Hulk” and “Moon Knight.”

No cast has been announced yet for these upcoming shows:

“She-Hulk” will follow Bruce Banner’s cousin, attorney Jennifer Walters, who gets a radioactive blood transfusion. She first appeared in 1980’s The Savage She-Hulk No. 1, and was the last major Marvel character co-created by Stan Lee.

“Moon Knight” is the vigilante alter ego of mercenary Marc Spector, who also has two other alter egos: millionaire Steven Grant and cab driver Jake Lockley. They may all be coming from Egyptian deity Konshu … or Konshu might also be a figment of Spector’s imagination. Got that?

“Ms. Marvel”: This version of Captain Marvel is a teenager named Kamela Khan, Marvel’s first Muslim character to lead her own comics title. She’s a Pakistani-American who has the ability to stretch and change her shape. The show is in development with British writer Bisha K. Ali to write and act as showrunner.

We’re also getting alternate reality animated series “What If…?” in 2021. “Westworld” star Jeffrey Wright will voice the all-seeing Watcher, who will be “your guide through these vast new realities.”

Kevin Feige showed scenes of alternate MCU plots, including  Zombie Captain America and Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) taking up Captain America’s mantle and becoming Captain Carter.

All these series will be intertwined with Marvel’s theatrical films, meaning they expect you to watch “Falcon & Winter Soldier,” “WandaVision,” “Loki,” “What If…?”,” Hawkeye” and all the MCU movies.

    Disney+ launches November 12 in the U.S.

  • Kat Dennings and Randall Park’s MCU Characters Join Disney+’s ‘WandaVision’

Kat Dennings and Randall Park’s MCU Characters Join Disney+’s ‘WandaVision’

    Marvel/Disney

WandaVision,” the Disney+ series about (who else?) MCU characters Wanda and Vision, just revealed more of its cast, all of whom have a way with one-liners.

Joining Wanda (Elizabeth Olsen) and Vision (Paul Bettany) are wisecracking Darcy (Kat Dennings) from the “Thor” movies and perpetually flustered FBI agent Jimmy Woo (Randall Park) from “Ant-Man and The Wasp.”

Joining the MCU for the first time is Emmy-nominated star Kathryn Hahn of ‘Transparent,” “Bad Moms” and “Private Life” fame.

“WandaVision” will show “what an ideal life with vision looks like.”  It’s being billed as “half sitcom, half epic MCU adventure.”

So, superheroes + nosy, chatty neighbors?

Marvel previously announced that “WandaVision” will be “unlike anything we’ve done before.” Olsen added, “It’s gonna get weird.”

  • Hilary Duff Returning As Lizzie McGuire for Disney+

Hilary Duff Returning As Lizzie McGuire for Disney+

    Disney Channel

Lizzie McGuire is coming back. Hilary Duff has agreed to reprise her role as the Disney Channel character for Disney+.

In the updated version of the sitcom, Lizzie is a 30-year-old millennial navigating life in New York City. Like the original series, it will include an animated version of a young Lizzie who comments on what the now-grown-up Lizzie  is really thinking.

Duff currently stars on TV Land comedy “Younger,” and, thanks to a special deal, will continue to star on both shows.

“Lizzie McGuire,” which debuted in January 2001 and ran for four seasons, was one of Disney Channel’s highest-rated series.  It also spawned 2003’s “The Lizzie McGuire Movie,” which grossed $55 million at the global box office.

Disney wanted to do a second movie and a new series with Lizzie in high school, but negotiations between Duff and Disney fell through.

The actress, who’s now 31, has mentioned in recent interviews that she would be open to a Lizzie McGuire reboot or reunion.

It’s the second Disney Channel live-action franchise to get a new series on Disney+ after “High School Musical.” However, the new version of “HSM” has an all-new cast.

  • Bob Odenkirk Says the ‘Breaking Bad’ Movie Is Already Done Filming

    AMC

Turns out the “Breaking Bad” movie (which has nothing to do with Aaron Paul and Bryan Cranston’s new line of alcohol), has already wrapped.

Talking to THR, Bob Odenkirk, who stars in the “Breaking Bad” prequel spinoff, “Better Call Saul,” said, “I don’t know what people know and don’t know [about the movie]. I find it hard to believe you don’t know it was shot. They did it. You know what I mean? How is that a secret? But it is. They’ve done an amazing job of keeping it a secret.”

The movie, which will focus on Paul’s character Jesse Pinkman, will debut on AMC and Netflix sometime in 2020.

Filming the movie is the reason Season 5 of “Better Call Saul” has been delayed. (Season 4 ended in October 2018 with Odenkirk’s character, Jimmy McGill announcing he’ll be practicing law under a different name: “S’all good, man.”

If you’ve been anxious to see Odenkirk finally become Saul Goodman, Odenkirk says, “They’ve been building it slowly but it’s turning. Now it’s turning rapidly, I would say. That’s similar to ‘Breaking Bad, too. This very slow buildup as we go up the roller-coaster ramp and then, it starts going downhill, it just cannot stop”

Odenkirk added “Season Five — which we’re shooting right now. — is just everything’s on fire, and it’s just burning down around us.”

He said, “I was worried about the audiences staying with us. We asked people to watch closely and to understand on a deeper level the characters and the plot, and you know what? They did.”

“The audience really impressed the hell out of me,” he said. “But I do think that it was all because of ‘Breaking Bad’ and not just because of the success of ‘Breaking Bad’… when ‘Better Call Saul’ started, they immediately were hooked into watching closely and not worrying about it getting somewhere but trusting that it would.”

  • Robert Downey Jr. Reveals He Was Busted For Smoking Pot on First Visit to Disneyland

    Marvel/Disney

Robert Downey Jr. was named a Disney Legend today at Disney’s D23 Expo and shared a slightly scandalous story of the first time he visited Disneyland.

“Here’s a bit of trivia for you, the very first time I went to Disneyland I was transported to another place…within moments of being arrested,” he said. “I was brought to a surprisingly friendly processing center. Given a stern warning and returned, if memory serves, to one very disappointed group chaperone. I would like to make amends for whoever had to contain me for smoking pot in the gondola without a license.”

He jokingly added that of course “pot smoking licenses for the gondola,” or any other theme park attractions, are not available. He concluded by confessing, “I’ve been sitting on that shame for a while and I’m just going to release it here. That’s a load off.”

He didn’t give a specific date when this happened, but the “Iron Man” star dropped out of high school in 1982 to pursue acting full time. And the Disneyland Gondolas (aka the Skyway) closed down in 1994.

Iron Man” and “Jungle Book” director Jon Favreau was also named a Disney Legend today, as were Ming-Na (the voice of “Mulan”) and composer Hans Zimmer, whose many scores include “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl” and 1994’s “The Lion King.”

  • Kit Harington Is Joining the MCU, But Who’s He Playing?

    HBO

Word out of Disney’s D23 Expo is that “Game of Thrones” star Kit Harington is joining the MCU.

But, like Jon Snow himself, we have to admit we know nothing at this point.

Still, the collision of these two titanic fandoms is news indeed.

Fellow “Game of Thrones” star Richard Madden was previously announced to star as Ikaris in “The Eternals,” opposite Angelina Jolie

At one point, Mother of Dragons herself Emilia Clarke was in consideration to play the lead villain in “Iron Man 3,” but, apparently, Marvel CEO Ike Perlmutter thought fans wouldn’t buy an action figure of a female villain and the script was rewritten.

We’ll add more details as we learn them about Harington’s MCU role.
