Johnny Depp plays Willy Wonka like a cross between Michael Jackson and Anna Wintour; not even a (totally unnecessary) backstory can make that portrayal any more sympathetic or less creepy. It’s certainly not going to make you forget Gene Wilder‘s definitive Wonka. At least Freddie Highmore‘s Charlie displays the right amount of awe and delight.
