While there’s nothing wrong with mindless blockbusters like “Independence Day,” “Contact” was a necessary reminder that Hollywood could still deliver cerebral sci-fi movies in the ’90s. This is an alien movie with a lot on its mind, including the clash between science and religion and humanity finally encounters intelligent life in the universe.
