After a decade spent making motion-capture cartoons, Zemeckis returned to the real world of adults with this drama about a pilot (Denzel Washington) who saves most of those aboard his passenger jet during a horrific near-disaster, but whose substance abuse issues prompt an investigation of his possible responsibility for the incident. Washington got an Oscar nomination for his meatiest role in years, and the flight sequences were some of the scariest on film since the director’s own "Cast Away" plane crash a decade earlier.
