Zemeckis finds another puzzle-solving dreamer in Philippe Petit, the real-life French acrobat who, in 1974, figured out how to sneak past security at the World Trade Center, string a cable between the Twin Towers, and walk back and forth for 45 minutes a quarter-mile above lower Manhattan. Some viewers have been put off by the long set-up and Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s French accent, but the payoff is worth it, especially in vertigo-inducing 3D.
