3. ‘The Hunchback of Notre Dame’ (1996)

For many Disney animation fans, it’s all downhill after 1994’s “The Lion King.” However, “Hunchback” deserves credit for its contribution to the Disney Renaissance. Between the lush animation, memorable songs and surprisingly dark and mature subject matter (the villain’s whole motivation is to have sex with the heroine, after all), it helped Disney achieve the animated equivalent of a Broadway musical.
