Moviefone recently had the pleasure of speaking with Zooey Deschanel, Charlie Cox and Director Jessica Swale about their work on ‘Merv’, Deschanel’s first reaction to the screenplay, why Cox wanted to work with her, their experience acting opposite Gus, and the challenges of directing a dog on set.

Moviefone: To begin with, Zooey, can you talk about your fist reaction to the screenplay and what it was like for you to work with Gus and Charlie on this project?

Zooey Deschanel: Well, I first read the screenplay and I really love the concept. I thought it was so sweet. Then I got to talk to this amazing person here, Jess, and we got along so well, and I wanted to do the movie. Then working with Gus and Charlie was just an absolute dream. What incredible actors. Very different. Different styles. Gus works for sausages and Charlie works for hamburgers. Similar, but different, although I bet Gus would work for a hamburger too.

MF: Charlie, can you talk about Russ and Anna’s relationship, how they come together to help Merv, and what it was like for you working with Gus and Zooey?

Charlie Cox: I think one of the things I found charming about the script was this idea that Merv seems to intuit it early on. He knows what they don’t about each other and about their relationship. It’s really a journey of their discovery that they are perfect for each other. That life is difficult, life throws curveballs at you and that doesn’t necessarily mean that the person that is your significant other is the wrong person for you. Gus is a dream, as Zoe said. He’s a very professional. There’s a kind of a fun anecdote, which is that Gus is so well trained that he can do anything on command that he’s trained to do. But because he’s so well trained, one thing he’s not particularly good at is being very enthusiastic because that’s a trait of an untrained dog. So, when we needed Gus to be like crazy, or happy to see us or happy that we’re together or whatever it was, they would bring in Gus’s stunt double, Captain Chaos, who is untrained. Captain Chaos after a slight beard dying, would do a very good impersonation of Gus being very excited. Zoe in my estimation is the GOAT of rom-coms and this genre. So, to work with her is like an absolute treat and dream.

MF: Finally, Jessica, can you talk about the challenges of directing a dog and how you were able to get such a great performance from Gus?

Jessica Swale: Yes, all my normal techniques of persuasion, like taking an actor for dinner and chatting about the character or do some rehearsals and get to know each other. It’s a bit more difficult when he’s a four-legged dog and he doesn’t speak English. It might be my accent because I was one of the only Brits on set, but it was it was great fun. It’s funny because he’s a key part of the movie, but it is essentially a rom com that’s about two people at a very particular moment in their lives and he’s the conduit. So, whilst he’s on screen a lot, it’s really about the story and the kind of machinations of the relationship and the emotional growth of these two. The great thing about having Gus on set was that he is always a pro and he’s always ready and over the course of the weeks that we were shooting, the more you got to know him, we were able to go, “Oh, that’s how we recognize that he’s sad. He’s good at it and he drops his eye line. He puts his head down or he tilts to one side”. So, I think we had a more dramatic performance as the weeks went on.

    Preview:

    • Shailene Woodley will play singer Janis Joplin in a new movie.
    • She’s also producing the film.
    • The biopic is benefitting from a $2.5 million tax credit handed out by California.

Given her albeit tragically short-lived but storied contribution to the world of music, it’s shocking that no-one has been able to bring a movie about Janis Joplin to screens yet.

Still, that isn’t stopping Shailene Woodley, who has plans to star in and produce exactly that.

Few details have emerged about who else is involved –– we don’t, for example, know who the writer or director are yet –– but production company Temple Hill is backing the film, which has now received $2.5 million in funding from the California Film and Television Tax Credit Program.

    Who was Janis Joplin?

Joplin was a musical icon of the 1960s, known as much for her searing blues songwriting and powerful voice as she was for her turbulent rock-and-roll lifestyle. The powerhouse behind ‘Mercedes Benz’ and a variety of respected covers, she died of an overdose in 1970, aged 27, shocking the music world.

Her life has been brought to screens in a couple of TV movies, but so far, big screen attempts have all faltered (see below).

Who else has tried to make a Janis Joplin biopic?

    ‘Wayne’s World’ director Penelope Spheeris.

At this point, it might be easier and quicker to fill a list of who hasn’t tried to make a film about, or star as, Joplin.

Wayne’s World’ director Penelope Spheeris had first Pink attached in 2004 and then Zooey Deschanel in 2006, looking to get ‘The Gospel According To Janis’ into theaters ahead of an effort by Lakeshore Entertainment, which boasted of landing Renee Zellweger to star.

Sean Durkin, who most recently made ‘The Iron Claw’, took a stab at the idea back in 2012, with Tony winner Nina Arianda playing Janis, but nothing came of that one. Durkin popped back up again with an effort in 2016 that seemingly landed Michelle Williams to star, only for things to go very quiet once more.

You’ll forgive us, then, for not holding our breath until the movie is actually in theaters.

Woodley seems excited that her version of the story now has a boost for its funding.

    Here’s her statement:

“I have a feeling Janis would be smiling ear to ear, zipping down the PCH in her psychedelic Porsche knowing her story is bringing opportunities and funding to the city and people that held so much significance to her. Thank you to the California Film Commission’s Film & Television Tax Credit Program — myself and the other producers on this project believe California is the only place to film a slice of Janis’s life with authenticity and truth — and we are so grateful to have received the green light to do so!”

Trolls Band Together’, which arrives in theaters on Friday, is the third outing for the popular franchise, following in the footsteps –– or perhaps that should be dance steps in this case –– of 2016’s ‘Trolls’ and 2020’s more controversial ‘Trolls World Tour’.

That second film was problematic not because of any particular content, but because it was one of the earliest movies to be released concurrently in theaters and on Peacock, which angered major movie chain AMC enough that it swore not to release Universal movies going forward (that has since been reversed thanks to a new contract between the studio and the company).

‘Trolls Band Together’ has faced its own challenge –– the actors’ strike has meant its stars, including Justin Timberlake and Anna Kendrick –– were not permitted to promote it until this final week of release now the strike is over.

So, the new movie has to stand on its own merits, which honestly are becoming fewer and fewer as the franchise rumbles along.

Is ‘Trolls Band Together’ a fun family film?

‘Trolls Band Together,’ directed by Walt Dohrn. © 2023 DreamWorks Animation. All Rights Reserved.

The ‘Trolls’ franchise, despite its star vocal power and box office success, has never seemed to enjoy the same reputation as, say, the ‘Shrek’ movies or ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ in the DreamWorks Animation Canon. It’s noticeable that there isn’t a troll to be found in the fancy recent animated legacy logo for the studio.

And while the original ‘Trolls’ was full of energy and no little invention, and the second looked to raise the stakes, ‘Band Together’ sadly feels like it’s running low on both, forced to rely on hokey old chestnuts as previously unexplored relatives and fame-hungry divas.

Plus, if we’re honest, the movie largely feels like an excuse to have Justin Timberlake reunite boyband NSYNC for a closing song. It’s a marketing decision that inspired a movie, and that shows.

‘Trolls Band Together’: Script and Direction

Zooey Deschanel voices Bridget in 'Trolls Band Together,' directed by Walt Dohrn.
Zooey Deschanel voices Bridget in ‘Trolls Band Together,’ directed by Walt Dohrn.

With DreamWorks veteran Walt Dohrn (who co-directed the original) and co-director Tim Heitz working from a script by Elizabeth Tippet (‘Trolls World Tour’) ‘Band Together’ flashes back to Branch’s (Timberlake) younger days when he was part of a boy band called BroZone with his brothers. Quite why he’s never thought to mention this fact to Poppy (Kendrick) is somewhat explained by the fact that the group –– and the family –– broke up after they failed to achieve a “perfect family harmony” during their big concert. And if you guessed that might factor into the plot down the road, have a gold star –– it’s always how these things work out.

But Poppy and Branch heading out on a mission to help save one of those mysterious brothers when he’s kidnapped by fame-hungry performers Veneer (Andrew Rannells) and Velvet (Amy Schumer), who literally have a way to siphon his talent for their own use is far from the most compelling concept. The storyline wends its way through the predictable beats that will keep the kids entertained enough but will likely feel punishing to most adults who have to take them.

It is certainly bright and frenetic in keeping with the other movies, but that’s all in service of a very bland story. And the jukebox musical format mostly makes you think that more effort was put into finding ways to squeeze in pop and oldies hits into the plot.

    ‘Trolls Band Together’: Performances

As usual, Kendrick is the standout here, her infectious enthusiasm as Poppy helping to paper over some of the cracks. Timberlake rarely gets above serviceable as Branch, though he seems to pick up some energy whenever he’s given a chance to sing.

There are a few of the veteran ‘Trolls’ performers here, especially Zooey Deschanel as Bridget and Christopher Mintz-Plasse as King Gristle, the former Troll-hunting Bergens who are now good friends of our heroes, while Kenan Thompson adds in his typical side gags as Tiny Diamond.

Of the new recruits, Schumer and Rannells make the most impact as the posturing performer twins, who are styled like 1920s cartoons from rivals Disney (surely no coincidence), while Camila Cabello does her best to match Kendrick’s energy as Viva, Poppy’s heretofore unmentioned sister. Credit also to Zosia Mamet as Crimp, the twins’ overworked and underappreciated assistant.

    ‘Trolls Band Together’ Final Thoughts

Branch (Justin Timberlake, center) in 'Trolls Band Together,' directed by Walt Dohrn.
Branch (Justin Timberlake, center) in ‘Trolls Band Together,’ directed by Walt Dohrn.

If you’re in the right age bracket for the ‘Trolls’ movies, then this essentially delivers what you’re after –– a lot of music, some bright, peppy animation that moves at a high gear and plenty of silly jokes. It’s chaotic and candy colored, and if you don’t love one sequence, another will be along shortly.

Plus, there has been some effort lavished on the musical sequences, which are the selling point here –– some experimental animated moments that evoke the likes of ‘Yellow Submarine’ or wilder and wackier comic books to stand apart from the usual blend of felt Trolls and the rest of the characters, who have a near stop-motion feel.

Those who are older might smile at the sheer number of boyband names and other references crammed into the dialogue. But in general, you’re likely to end up just feeling a little tired of it all. These Trolls could really use spending quiet time in their tree for a few years –– at least until they dream up some new material.

‘Trolls Band Together’ receives 5 out of 10 stars.

Who else is in ‘Trolls Band Together’?

9 Things You Never Knew About ‘(500) Days of Summer’ on its 10th Anniversary

    Fox Searchlight

Romantic comedies don’t get much better than “(500) Days of Summer.” Ten years later, we still enjoy getting caught up in the whirlwind, doomed romance between Tom and Summer. To celebrate this anniversary, here are some things you might not know about “(500) Days of Summer.”

    1. Co-writer Scott Neustadter based the screenplay and the characterization of Tom on one of his previous relationships. On the DVD commentary he estimates 75% of the events in the film actually happened to him.

    2. While well-known now for directing the “Amazing Spider-Man” movies and 2017’s “Gifted,” at the time director Marc Webb was mostly known for his music video work. “(500) Days of Summer” was his first feature-length project.

    Fox Searchlight

    3. Webb returned to his roots after completing work on the film, filming a music video starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel dancing to the song “Why Do You Let Me Stay Here?” from Deschanel’s band She & Him.

    4. The movie is widely praised as a showcase for Los Angeles architecture, but originally the script was set in San Francisco.

    Fox Searchlight

    5. Before Deschanel was cast as Summer, the character was written as having a short, blond hairstyle representative of summer.

    6. Matthew Gray Gubler‘s dialogue had to be slightly altered in order to avoid an R-rating. Apparently Paul saying the word “humjob” instead of “blowjob” made all the difference to the MPAA.

    7. The documentary about love contains a great deal of footage not included in the final movie. In fact, it wasn’t originally intended to be included at all, at least until it received strong test audience reactions.

    Fox Searchlight

    8. The rooms used for Tom’s apartment and the New Hampshire Greetings offices were both in the same building.

    9. The movie gives conflicting information as to what year it takes place. The narrator refers to May 23 being on a Wednesday, which would suggest the film unfolds from January 8, 2006 to May 23, 2007. However, one of Summer’s email messages to Tom is dated 2008.

new girl, renewed, renewal, season 6, foxJess, Nick, Schmidt, Winston, and CeCe will stick together for another year: New Girl” for a sixth season.

Though ratings have been down this year for the sitcom, it’s still the network’s most-watched series on Tuesday nights, anchoring a comedy block that also includes “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” (which was also picked up for another season) and freshmen series “The Grinder” and “Grandfathered.” (No word yet on the fate of those latter two shows.)

“Every network comedy should aspire to what [creator] Liz Meriwether is achieving in ‘New Girl,’ with its bravura dialogue, inventive and witty performances by the talented cast, and emotionally engaging storytelling,” said Fox president David Madden in a statement. “The series is as creatively strong today as it ever was, we want to congratulate ‘New Girl’ on reaching its milestone 100th episode, and we can’t wait for the next subversive and hilarious chapter of these characters’ lives.”

Season five has been an unusual one for the sitcom, which was pushed to a midseason premiere for the first time in order to accommodate titular star Zooey Deschanel’s pregnancy (which was not written into the show). After appearing in the beginning of the season, Deschanel’s Jess then sat out five episodes, and actress Megan Fox rotated into the cast for a guest arc as sexy pharmaceutical rep Reagan. The show’s 100th episode featured Jess’s triumphant return to the loft, and Reagan’s departure.

It’s unclear if Fox will once again hold “New Girl” for midseason on the 2016-2017 schedule. Either way, fans should be pleased that they’ll get to spend another season with the gang.

  • Bill Murray Gets Lost in the ‘Rock the Kasbah’ Trailer

rock the kasbahThere are plenty of ridiculous moments featured in the new trailer for “Rock the Kasbah,” which stars Bill Murray as floundering music manager Richie Lanz, who’s trying to revive his career by taking one of his artists on tour in…Afghanistan?

Yes, that not-so-brilliant idea is the central premise for “Kasbah,” though that’s only the beginning. Richie’s incredulous protege singer (Zooey Deschanel) promptly bails on him as soon as they touch down, taking his wallet and passport for good measure; after he’s briefed on the situation by a gun-toting Bruce Willis, he has to decide what to do with himself now that he’s adrift overseas.

Then, Richie stumbles upon a local teenager who’s trying to make it to a singing competition in Kabul, “Afghan Star,” and the hapless manager takes the girl under his wing. We’re told she has a great voice, but we don’t hear it here; maybe that’s another misconception floating around Richie’s already-hazy brain?

Based on this clip alone, it’s hard to pass a firm judgement on “Kasbah.” Perhaps the haphazardness on display here is meant to mirror Murray’s character’s mental state? The actor seems to be playing a drunker, wilder-haired version of himself, and who doesn’t love Bill Murray?

  • Fox Renews ‘New Girl’ for Season 5

    New Girl
“New Girl” has charmed the execs at Fox, and is sticking around for a little while longer.

TVLine reports that the network has renewed the sitcom for a fifth season, which has already begun production to accommodate star Zooey Deschanel‘s pregnancy (which will not be written into the show). The series returns from a brief hiatus tonight.

“Four seasons in, ‘New Girl’ continues to be one of the smartest and most relatable comedies on television,” said Fox entertainment president David Madden in a statement. “The writing is razor-sharp, the ensemble is consistently hilarious, and we couldn’t be more proud of… the entire ‘New Girl’ team. We absolutely love this show and we’re so excited to bring it back for Season Five.”

Coming up in the last batch of season four episodes, “Saturday Night Live” star Taran Killam will guest star as a love interest for Jess, and the show will say goodbye to Coach (Damon Wayans Jr.), who’s leaving the series for a second time. TVLine also reports some news about season five: John Cho (“Selfie,” “Sleepy Hollow”) is set to have a guest arc sometime during the upcoming season, and “will play a guy Jess meets when she excitedly reports for Jury Duty.”
