‘Joker’ Director Shares First Look at Zazie Beetz, Laments ‘Bad’ Paparazzi Set Photos

    20th Century Fox

Joker” director Todd Phillips is once again offering fans a behind the scenes glimpse at his upcoming DC spinoff film, this time with a first look at actress Zazie Beetz in character — and some disappointment over all of those leaked paparazzi shots from the film’s New York City set.

In a post on Instagram, Phillips introduced fans to Beetz’s character, who’s so far remaining nameless, but is rumored to be a single mother who catches the eye of Joaquin Phoenix‘s titular villain.

Phillips said he was “so excited” to work with Beetz, whom “Deadpool 2” fans are no doubt eager to see back on the big screen. But one thing that’s not so exciting for Phillips? All of the paparazzi attention that’s been flooding the production.

When a fan joked in an Instagram comment (via The Playlist) that Phillips should “stop with the hype” for the movie when it won’t be released for more than a year, the director responded that he’s sick of “bad” paparazzi shots getting so much attention.

“So I figure, may as well put out some good ones,” Phillips wrote of the photo and video he has shared so far.

Sounds like a solid plan to us. More official behind the scenes images are never a bad thing (as long as they’re spoiler-free, obviously).

“Joker” is due in theaters on October 4, 2019. If you’re looking for more intel before then, head over to Phillips’s Instagram page.

  • ‘Slice’ Trailer Introduces Pizza Delivery Place From Hell

‘Slice’ Trailer Introduces Pizza Delivery Place From Hell

    A24

Pizza can kill you in the trailer for “Slice.”

A24’s horror comedy stars Zazie Beetz (“Deadpool 2,” “Atlanta”) and Chance the Rapper (in his feature film debut) as the only surviving pizza delivery drivers in their small town. Something deadly has been targeting drivers and they’re determined to find the culprit.

Oh, and as pizza shop owner Paul Scheer discovers, his business was built on portal to hell and there’s werewolves, witches, and ghosts all around.

Whaaat? Yeah, bonkers premise, but totally hilarious.

The movie comes from director Austin Vesely, who helmed Chance’s music videos for “Sunday Candy” and “Angels.” Also in on the fun times are “Stranger Things” star Joe Keery and comedian Hannibal Buress.

Beetz described the movie as a “surreal kind of fairytale” and it definitely seems like A24 is pushing the boundaries on the horror genre, which it has served so well with “The Witch” and “Hereditary.”

“Slice” does not yet have a release date.

Natalie Portman Shares First Look at ‘Pale Blue Dot,’ Replacing Reese Witherspoon

Space is the place to be right now. Ryan Gosling has “First Man.” Sean Penn has “The First.” And now Natalie Portman has “Pale Blue Dot.”

Reese Witherspoon was attached to star in “Pale Blue Dot,” until scheduling conflicts arose with “Big Little Lies” Season 2. So the film swapped one Oscar winner for another. (What, like it’s hard?)

Natalie Portman just shared the first look at her character via Instagram, showing astronaut Lucy Cola in full NASA jumpsuit regalia. (See below.)

“Pale Blue Dot” co-stars Jon Hamm, Dan Stevens, and Zazie Beetz. The story follows Lucy as she returns to Earth after a mission to outer space. According to Variety, “The film explores the theory that astronauts who spend long periods of time in space begin to lose their sense of reality when they return home.”

Apparently there’s a love triangle angle, and once her affair with a fellow astronaut comes to an end, Lucy beings to lose touch with reality.

According to ET, the movie is loosely based on the real-life “astronaut love triangle” story. When NASA captain and naval flight officer Lisa Nowak returned from a mission aboard Space Shuttle Discovery in 2006, her boyfriend Bill Oefelein broke up with her and began to date U.S. Air Force Captain Colleen Shipman. It got very ugly.

    Here’s Portman all suited up:

“Pale Blue Dot” marks the feature film directorial debut for “Fargo” and “Legion” boss Noah Hawley. It also stars Ellen Burstyn, Colman Domingo, and Jeremiah Birkett. There’s no release date at this point.

  • ‘Deadpool 2’ Star Zazie Beetz in Talks for Joaquin Phoenix’s ‘Joker’ Movie

Zazie Beetz is still feelin’ lucky. The Domino actress is fresh off “Deadpool 2” and now she’s ready to join another superhero/villain movie.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the “Atlanta” actress is in talks to join Joaquin Phoenix‘s “Joker” origin movie, from director Todd Phillips.

She would play “a single mother who catches the interest of the man who will become the ‘clown prince of crime.’”

“Joker” has been compared to a dark crime thriller, described as an “exploration of a man disregarded by society that is not only a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale.”

It’s meant to have a lower budget than the DC Extended Universe movies, since it’s not part of that world. (Jared Leto is still the current Joker in the DCEU, and he may still get his own movie.)

“Joker” — the official title — is scheduled to start filming in New York in September.

Meanwhile, Beetz’s career is still flying high. She’s an Emmy nominee for her role as Van in “Atlanta,” and she has several films coming up beyond “Joker” — including “Finding Her,” “Slice,” “High Flying Bird,” “The Undiscovered Country,” “Against All Enemies,” and “Pale Blue Dot.” She’ll also be back for more fun with Ryan Reynolds in the eventual “X-Force” movie.

“Joker” was just given a release date of Oct. 4, 2019.

  • ‘Deadpool 2’ Test Screenings Went Poorly? Not So Fast

It’s time to put maximum effort into “Deadpool 2” rumor busting.

The Internet has been passing around rumors that initial test screenings did not go well, prompting reshoots to fix the problems. Some of the reports are coming from people who weren’t there and haven’t seen the movie, they just heard it tested “really poorly” and the producers were “stunned” with the audience’s reaction. Without having been there, it’s hard to be sure of what’s true and false. It’s true that the film is undergoing reshoots (as confirmed by Josh Brolin), but that’s true of almost all major movies, and doesn’t carry a negative connotation on its own.

So — and maybe it’s just wishful thinking — we’re leaning toward Collider‘s source report saying testing went well and the reshoots are focused on adding more of Domino (Zazie Beetz) and Cable (Josh Brolin).

    Here’s the story from Collider:

“We’re hearing that the first Deadpool 2 test screening was in January, when the film tested around 90 or 91 out of 100. The studio then had another test screening after more editing had been completed, at which point the film tested in the high 90s. However, while both test screenings went well, our sources tell us that crowds in both screenings had the same ‘complaint’: They wanted to see more of both Zazie Beetz’ character Domino and Josh Brolin’s character Cable.”

From that angle, the reshoots were a positive response to how much fans liked two new characters and wanted even more from them.

If you’re Zazie Beetz or Josh Brolin, that has to feel good. (Zazie Beetz reportedly has a three picture deal with 20th Century Fox, so hopefully fans continue to love Domino.)

The “truth” about the movie’s merits will be subjective, as it is for all movies, but we won’t have to wait too long to see the final product. “Deadpool 2” opens in theaters May 18th.

  • ‘Deadpool 2’ Star Zazie Beetz Shares Moving Statement on Tragic On-Set Accident

FOX And FX's 2017 Golden Globe Awards After Party - ArrivalsFollowing the death of a “Deadpool 2” stuntwoman on Monday, Zazie Beetz has responded to the tragedy.

The actress, who plays Domino, posted a handwritten message on Instagram on Thursday in honor of Joi “SJ” Harris, the stunt person who died in the deadly on-set accident. Beetz’s response was delayed, she indicated, because she struggled to find the right words. What she ultimately came up with, though, was a meaningful and moving post.

“On Monday we tragically lost on of our own — Joi SJ Harris,” she wrote. “My heart has been breaking the past two days and I have been searching what to say or do. I know that what I feel is nothing compared to what her loved ones, friends [and] family, are feeling. My heart and my love goes out to her and them all. The cast and crew send peace, healing, and their deepest condolences.”

A post shared by Zazie (@zaziebeetz) on

Harris was Beetz’s stunt double, according to Deadline, so we imagine Beetz may have been particularly affected by the loss. She wasn’t the only cast member to speak out, though. Ryan Reynolds issued a statement Monday, saying they were “heartbroken, shocked and devastated,” and also acknowledged how difficult this is for Harris’s loved ones.

Production was halted until Wednesday, and then resumed after the cast and crew held a moment of silence to pay tribute to Harris.

“Deadpool 2” is still on track to open June 1, 2018.

  • ‘Deadpool 2’ Filming Resumes, Ryan Reynolds Holds Moment of Silence for Stunt Driver

'Deadpool' Fan Event“Deadpool 2” went back to work August 16, two days after the death of stunt driver Joi “SJ” Harris in a Domino motorcycle stunt gone wrong, and new details are emerging about what happened.

According to Deadline, a posted notice for production in Vancouver read, “Due to unforeseen circumstances, [‘Deadpool 2’] was unable to complete its filming planned for August 14th and 15th” but filming was still scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday.

TMZ posted video of star Ryan Reynolds leading the “Deadpool 2” team in a moment of silence for Harris before resuming filming.

Wednesday’s downtown Vancouver filming included Deadpool himself shooting scenes on top of a flipped truck.

Deadline reports that Harris was brought onto “Deadpool 2” just last Wednesday when they realized they needed a different stunt performer. She was performing a stunt as the Domino character in the film (played on screen by Zazie Beetz) when the motorcycle that she was driving went out of control and crashed. She had already done several successful takes and was not wearing a helmet when the accident happened. According to Deadline, “the previous stunt double did have a helmet outfitted to go under the Domino wig but because of the short notice of joining Fox’s ‘Deadpool 2,’ Harris did not have time to get such a helmet made for her.”

Zazie Beetz posted a tribute to her stunt double:

On Monday, Reynolds tweeted a statement that the “Deadpool 2” cast and crew were “heartbroken, shocked, and devastated” by the death of the stuntwoman.

The British Columbia Coroners Service and WorkSafeBC are investigating what happened.

“Deadpool 2” is still scheduled to open June 1, 2018.

  • First Look at Zazie Beetz as Domino in ‘Deadpool 2’

The 76th Annual Peabody Awards - PortraitsHello, Domino!

“Deadpool 2” star Ryan Reynolds shared yet another image from filming on the movie’s set, and this time, he released the first look at Zazie Beetz in costume as Domino. It’s a tongue-in-cheek image (of course), with Domino laying on top of Deadpool’s back. Looks like she’s got him right where she wants him:

Domino’s real name is Neena Thurman, and she’s a mutant who can alter probability. She’s also skilled at marksmanship and hand-to-hand combat, and often works as a mercenary. In the comics, she is a partner and love interest of Cable, who will be played by Josh Brolin. She becomes a member of the X-Men and Cable’s militant group X-Force.

Not much is known about the plot of “Deadpool 2,” or how Cable and Domino come into play. But with this reveal of Domino, it seems like we can expect to get a first look at Cable soon (other than Brolin working out in the gym).

“Deadpool 2” opens in theaters June 1, 2018.

  • ‘Deadpool 2’: Ryan Reynolds Gets Creative Introducing Domino, Zazie Beetz

48th NAACP Image Awards - ArrivalsNothing about “Deadpool” is ever boring, not even a casting announcement.

Ryan Reynolds put together a creative tweet to announce his newest “Deadpool 2” co-star on Thursday. He managed to (sort of) spell out Zazie Beetz‘s name in dominoes. The implication seems clear: She’ll be playing the Marvel character Domino.

Beetz is new to Marvel flicks, but she’s not new to acting. She currently stars as Vanessa on the Golden Globe-winning series “Atlanta” and previously appeared in Netflix’s “Easy.” Her role in “Deadpool 2” will be her highest-profile to date.

Domino should be a fun role for Beetz. The character is known from the comics for being an excellent shot and skilled fighter … and she just so happens to be able have probability-altering mutant powers. She’s a member of the X-Force, just as Deadpool has been.

We’ll see how the Domino effect affects the Merc with the Mouth when the film comes out. “Deadpool 2” is expected to hit theaters in 2018.
