‘Smurfs’ receives a 4 out of 10 stars.

Coming exclusively to theaters on July 18th, it should come as no surprise to anyone that ‘Smurfs‘ is geared towards a much younger audience.

Directed by Chris Miller, and featuring the voices of many talented actors including Rihanna (Smurfette), James Corden (No Name), Nick Offerman (Ken), and John Goodman (Papa Smurf), ‘Smurfs’ is designed to capture the hearts of its target audience, which is young children.

‘Smurfs’ was made to introduce a whole new generation to to the lovable blue creatures that sometimes go up against evil wizards. On paper this concept might sound silly, but many of us grew up with our own version of the Smurfs, and it is nice that the younger generation has theirs now, as well.

Director Chris Miller knows his way around an animated feature, having worked on many including ‘Puss in Boots‘ and ‘Shrek the Third‘, so expectations were high going into this one.

One thing that every parent knows is that little kids do not have a long attention span. Because of that, animated features need to be able to keep their attention with bright colors, humor geared towards them, and action sequences. There needs to be something going on at all times or they will start to lose interest.

Something that ‘Smurfs’ does is keep moving, that is for sure, but because of this, it loses a lot of the explanation and exposition that is needed to properly tell the story. For those that do not know (or remember) the lore of Smurfs, some key plot points will not hit as hard – or even make sense.

The main message of the movie is taking the time to find your thing, and what you bring to the table. Smurfs have names based on their personality traits. For example, Brainy Smurf, Hefty Smurf, and Grouchy Smurf. No Name has tried thousands of things, but has not yet discovered what he is good at, which is why he is nameless at the start of the film.

The confusion comes with other Smurfs having names like Ron and Ken, so why doesn’t No Name at least have a regular name until he finds his thing? This is never explained and while kids probably will not pick up on it, parents are sure to be perplexed.

The animation itself is simple enough, but looks great on the big screen. ‘Smurfs’ is bright, colorful, and vibrant. Even when scenes take place in the evil Gargamel and Razamel’s lairs, it never gets too dark or scary. Later in the film, the plot points find a way to let the animators explore a few different styles. This is the best scene in the movie. It’s equal parts fun and creative.

While adults are sure to be rolling their eyes at many of the corny dad jokes being told, kids will be cracking up. This movie leans into the type of humor that it knows its audience wants, for better or worse.

    Cast and Performances

‘Smurfs’ has a star-studded cast that includes many of the greatest actors working today. With so many Smurfs in the village, some of them only have a line or two to deliver, but they all still bring their A-game.

John Goodman voices the beloved Papa Smurf. This character is very well known, which you would think would add some pressure to the role, but he voices him perfectly. John Goodman’s voice is soothing and very fatherly that it instantly works.

James Corden does a great job as No Name, who is struggling throughout most of the movie. He brings a timidness to him that is needed to believe his journey. One of the most memorable characters is Mama Poot, voiced by the always hilarious Natasha Lyonne. She knows how to deliver a punchline, even if the line written is silly.

The trailers teased that this movie was going to be a musical, going so far as to cast the incredibly talented Rihanna in the lead as Smurfette. From the start, it was clear that music was going to be the main focus, and while there are some songs kids will be singing on repeat, none of them standout as the hits of the summer.

Rihanna does a decent job as Smurfette, making her a likable enough character who encourages No Name throughout the film. That said, the script she is given does the character no favors, causing her backstory to feel rushed and come out of nowhere. Still, Rihanna does what she can with what she is given.

    Final Thoughts

‘Smurfs’ is a good introduction to these characters for a new generation, but it is also lacking so much of what older generations love about them. The story is rushed and lacks a lot of explanation that is needed in order for it to make sense. It isn’t all bad though as the animation is pretty, Rihanna can sing (we all know that), and the messages of never giving up on yourself are important.

Despite a script filled with dad jokes that will land with the kids and leave adults rolling their eyes, it has its moments. If there were to be more movies in the franchise, kids will surely gobble them right up.

Say what you will, ‘Smurfs’ certainly knows what its target audience wants, and delivers on it.

    • Lee Pace and Maisie Williams are leading the new recruits for ‘Practical Magic 2’
    • Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock are back to star.
    • Susanne Bier is directing the movie.

It’s clearly the time for long-awaited sequels to much-loved movies announcing clutches of new casting to support their returning stars.

With ‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’ recently adding actors, it’s the turn of ‘Practical Magic 2’, which will see the return of Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock as witch sisters Gillian and Sally Owens.

According to Deadline, new for the sequel will be Lee Pace (‘Foundation’), Maisie Williams (‘Game of Thrones’) Xolo Maridueña (‘Blue Beetle’), and Solly McLeod (‘The Dead Don’t Hurt’). We also now have confirmation that Joey King is officially aboard after previously being in talks.

That’s not all –– Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest, who appeared alongside Bullock and Kidman in the original movie –– will reprise their roles.

What’s the story of ‘Practical Magic’?

‘Practical Magic’ adapts Alice Hoffman’s 1995 novel. The movie follows two sisters, Sally (Bullock) and Gillian Owens (Kidman), who come from a long line of witches.

Orphaned at a young age, they are raised by their eccentric aunts, who embrace their magical heritage. However, the Owens family is cursed: any man who falls in love with an Owens woman is doomed to an untimely death.

Subsequently, Sally and Gillian struggle with their powers and the consequences of the family curse. Sally attempts to lead a normal life, distancing herself from magic, but tragedy strikes when her husband dies.

Gillian, on the other hand, lives a wild life, embracing her magical abilities. The sisters are reunited when Gillian finds herself in a dangerous relationship with Jimmy Angelov (Goran Visnjic), a violent man. In an effort to protect Gillian, the sisters accidentally kill Jimmy, leading to a series of supernatural events as they attempt to hide his death and ultimately break the family curse.

What will be the story for ‘Practical Magic 2’?

While there are zero official details are available for the new movie’s storyline, King’s casting does open up a narrative alley we figured they’d take.

She’ll play one of Bullock’s daughters, the one who discovers the dark family secrets and her own dark powers, plunging the family into a crisis.

As for the newcomers (beyond King), we don’t yet know their roles.

But Wiest and Channing, of course, will be Aunt Jet and Aunt Frances respectively, who always have wise words for their nieces (and now, grand-nieces).

Akiva Goldsman, who worked on the script for the original, is back, with Georgia Pritchett, a veteran of ‘Veep’ and ‘Succession,’ also credited.

What else has Susanne Bier made?

Bier is a hugely respected Danish filmmaker who is more normally found in the indie sphere, though has been diversifying into premium TV in recent years.

She got her start with 1991’s ‘Freud Leaving Home’ and has since made the likes of ‘Like It Never Was Before,’ ‘Credo,’ ‘The One and Only,’ ‘Open Hearts,’ ‘After the Wedding,’ ‘Things We Lost in the Fire,’ ‘Serena’ and ‘In a Better World,’ which won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film of the Year in 2011.

Her work has scored many other accolades and trophies, and she’s also been behind projects such as John le Carré adaptation ‘The Night Manager’ and White House drama ‘The First Lady.’ She is the first female director to win a Golden GlobeEmmy and European Film Award, collectively.

Perhaps most pertinent to ‘Practical Magic’ and its stars is her previous collaborations with both Bullock and Kidman.

Bullock starred in Bier’s Netflix thriller ‘Bird Box,’ the story of a world plunged into chaos when aliens arrive who send anyone who glimpses them mad.

As for Kidman, Bier handled HBO drama ‘The Undoing,’ which saw the actor starring alongside Hugh Grant in a murder mystery. And more recently, Bier tackled all the episodes of Netflix drama ‘The Perfect Couple,’ with Kidman playing the icy matriarch of a wealthy, dysfunctional family.

Here’s the statement from the filmmaking team on the new casting choices:

“Twenty-five years ago, Sally, Gillian, Aunt Jet and Aunt Franny flew off the pages of Alice Hoffman’s beloved novel and into theaters around the world, and we are thrilled to bring the Owens family back to the big screen with Joey, Lee, Maisie, Solly and Xolo joining the next chapter in our story. The enduring affection for these characters has been our inspiration to deliver the next installment in the Owens’ story to new fans, and those who’ve been with us since the beginning.”

When will ‘Practical Magic 2’ be in theaters?

We do now know when Warners is looking to release the sequel –– and in theaters, rather than sending it direct to streaming service HBO Max –– September 18th, 2026.

Production is currently underway in England, so all looks good for the sequel to hit that date.

‘Cobra Kai’ Season 6 Part 1 receives 9 out of 10 stars.

Arriving on Netflix on February 13th, ‘Cobra Kai’, which has successfully been running on the streaming service for the last few seasons, is finally ready to take its final bow.

After splitting this final batch of episodes into three (Netflix always looking for a way to keep those subscribers hooked), the end is here and the creators face the daunting challenge of wrapping up some knotty plotlines.

It’s hard to know exactly when the creative team –– led by Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg –– began planning the end; especially since in TV you’re usually working towards the end of a season, not necessarily the whole show.

Yet it’s clear a lot of thought has gone into the wrap up, with seeds planted years in advance and emotional moments paid off. That, and a whole lot of laughs too, since ‘Cobra Kai’ has never been straightforwardly dramatic.

A real benefit here compared to even having three main ‘Karate Kid’ movies is that we’ve had plenty of screen time to get to know the various characters (even if the focus remains weighted towards Ralph Macchio’s Daniel LaRusso and William Zabka’s Johnny Lawrence) and with the finale, the need to manufacture ways for the two old rivals-turned-friends to rekindle old tensions is removed, meaning we can just enjoy the evolution of these two men and their various students.

The writing team continues to bring the goods when it comes to the shows various dynamics, whether it’s the well-established connection between Johnny and Daniel, their lives outside of the dojo or the more melodramatic, soapier elements of the teenaged students who get the lions’ share of the fight scenes.

Especially delightful has been the development of side characters, such as Daniel’s wife Amanda (Courtney Henggeler), who has wisely gotten more to do as the show as evolved and particularly Yuji Okumoto’s Chozen, another rival to Daniel from the movies (the second, to be exact), has blossomed in just the few seasons he’s been on the show, whether he’s getting sloppily drunk or striking up an unexpected romantic connection with an apparent enemy.

‘Cobra Kai’ might not be the best-looking show in the Netflix pantheon, and certainly doesn’t have the budget or panache of, say, a ‘House of the Dragon,’ but the direction gets the job done and the inventive use of Atlanta to stand in for almost anywhere else, such as the San Fernando Valley north of Los Angeles) or here, Europe) helps the show look good enough.

Johnny and Daniel’s stories remain the big selling point for fans of the original movies. Macchio and Zabka have fully embraced the potential, playing our two unlikely heroes with a welcome level of depth and nuance.

We’ve watched Johnny in particular become a more fully-rounded human (yet still a loveable lunkhead with attitudes stuck in the 1980s at times) as he finds a family –– both nuclear and in his students –– and a purpose beyond anything he’s had in the past.

Daniel, meanwhile, has had to reckon with his ego having become more successful than his old enemy, and also confronting skeletons from the past. It’s perhaps that last element that rankles slightly; while Macchio is still great in the role, the shadows of doubt about Mr. Miyagi’s motives when he himself was younger has seemed more manufactured than other storylines (though does, at least, have a satisfying resolution we won’t detail here).

(L to R) Mary Mouser as Samantha LaRusso, Ralph Macchio as Daniel LaRusso in 'Cobra Kai'. Photo: Curtis Bonds Baker/Netflix © 2024.
(L to R) Mary Mouser as Samantha LaRusso, Ralph Macchio as Daniel LaRusso in ‘Cobra Kai’. Photo: Curtis Bonds Baker/Netflix © 2024.

Around them, the acting levels are varied, but the younger performers are entertaining in their roles, having been on their own journeys. Shout out to the likes of Xolo Maridueña as Miguel and Mary Mouser as Samantha for having the more satisfying finale in terms of both story and performance.

All in all, there is a lot to enjoy from the various characters, and their storylines wrap organically, with just a hint of classic movie emotion. And in case you’re wondering, no, one particular actor from the franchise who has been speculated about for years doesn’t finally show up (her name rhymes with “pillory tank”).

    Final Thoughts

While previous seasons have always nodded to continuing storylines, the pressure is finally off this one and a satisfying finale has been achieved.

Yes, there are hints of where the show could go from here, but as with other years, the creative have wrapped things up and this time with a truly welcome last outing. The only regret is that we won’t get to enjoy the further adventures of Daniel, Johnny and the rest –– unless you count the somewhat mystifying decision to have Macchio team up with Jackie Chan from the 2010 kung-fu version for this year’s ‘Karate Kid: Legends’ on the big screen. Honestly, we’d rather have seen Team ‘Cobra Kai’ given their shot at a movie.

What’s the plot of ‘Cobra Kai’ Season 6 Part 3?

After a shocking result in the Sekai Taikai, Miyagi-Do must reckon with their pasts while facing an uncertain future both on and off the mat. Almost 40 years after the events of the 1984 All Valley Karate Tournament, it’s all been leading to this.

Arriving on Netflix on July 18th, ‘Cobra Kai’, which has successfully been running on the streaming service for the last few seasons, is getting ready to wrap things up.

Yet there is a wrinkle in terms of scheduling for this final run –– as with several of the company’s other hits (‘Bridgerton’, ‘Stranger Things’) –– Season 6 has been split into distinct parts. This first part will be followed by Part 2 on November 28th and Part 3 at some point in 2025.

Fans might be disappointed that the show is ending can be reassured that the show has not, for the most part, dropped in quality.

Though the season is split into three, creators Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg have promised that each five-episode chunk will tell its own story within the wider arc, and on the evidence of Part 1, that’s holding true.

What works about the show is still in place –– the comedy and action still blend, and the characters are still entertaining (with one exception; more on that below).

‘Cobra Kai’ Season 6: Script and Direction

Martin Kove as John Kreese in 'Cobra Kai' season 6.
Martin Kove as John Kreese in ‘Cobra Kai’ season 6. Photo: Curtis Bonds Baker/Netflix © 2024.

As Season 6 opens, the story largely continues on from the previous season –– Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) and Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka), the two main senseis, having finally seen off Terry Silver (Thomas Ian Griffith) and the resurgent Cobra Kai dojo, are trying to find a way to successfully merge both their dojos and their teaching styles. And despite burying their differences, they still have friction.

Two main issues remain on the writing front –– one, it’s still tough, especially within a shorter season chunk, to cater to the expansive cast, finding interesting things for both the older and younger characters to do. Daniel and Johnny naturally enjoy the lion’s share, but some of the plot lines for the kids end up edging into soap opera territory.

The other is potentially more serious (if hardly serious in tone), though largely siloed off on its own storyline: a nonsense subplot about Johnny’s old teacher John Kreese (Martin Cove), who has been an occasional nemesis in the series’ run. In this latest outing, his off on some misguided quest to recruit new students, and there’s a whole part with a snake that is so on the nose, it’s ridiculous.

Direction has never been the show’s selling point –– it’s perfectly adequately shot, but rarely troubles the cinematic styles of fellow Peak TV shows or even other Netflix offerings. But the character work remains solid.

    ‘Cobra Kai’ Season 6: Performances

Khalil Everage as Chris, Nathaniel Oh as Nate, Griffin Santopeitro as Anthony Larusso, Owen Morgan as Bert, Mary Mouser as Samantha LaRusso, Aedin Mincks as Mitch, Gianni DeCenzo as Demetri, Xolo Maridueña as Miguel Diaz, Jacob Bertrand as Eli 'Hawk' Moskowitz, Tanner Buchanan as Robby Keene, Peyton List as Tory Nichols in 'Cobra Kai' season 6.

Photo: Curtis Bonds Baker/Netflix © 2024.

As we mentioned on the scripting front, there isn’t always an equal amount of solid storylines to go around. But the cast are, as ever, happy to throw themselves into these roles.

    Raph Macchio as Daniel LaRusso

William Zabka as Johnny Lawrence, Ralph Macchio as Daniel LaRusso, Yuji Okumoto as Chozen in 'Cobra Kai' season 6.
(L to R) William Zabka as Johnny Lawrence, Ralph Macchio as Daniel LaRusso, Yuji Okumoto as Chozen in ‘Cobra Kai’ season 6. Photo: Curtis Bonds Baker/Netflix © 2024.

The heart and soul of the franchise since the original ‘Karate Kid’ franchise, ‘Cobra Kai’ has allowed Macchio to dig out different sides and shades of the character, including the fact that he can sometimes lean into his arrogant side. But for the most part, he’s still the Daniel we know and respect, with a beefy extra storyline in which he discovers a side to his late mentor, Mr. Miyagi (Pat Morita), he never knew.

If anyone has truly benefitted from ‘Cobra Kai’ in terms of character work, it’s Zabka, who has found the space to expand what was a stock villain (albeit with some depth) into a fully-rounded wannabe badass with a brain and a viewpoint stuck in the 1980s. He’s endlessly entertaining, and you absolutely empathize with his attempts to be a better man (while still being a dumbass at times).

    Courtney Henggeler as Amanda LaRusso

Largely a supporting character in earlier seasons, Courtney Henggeler’s role as Daniel’s wife has been expanded in the last season or so, and with good reason: she’s a comedy assassin while also being a great emotional performer.

    Martin Kove as John Kreese

Alicia Hannah-Kim as Kim Da-Eun, Martin Kove as John Kreese in 'Cobra Kai' season 6.
(L to R) Alicia Hannah-Kim as Kim Da-Eun, Martin Kove as John Kreese in ‘Cobra Kai’ season 6. Photo: Curtis Bonds Baker/Netflix © 2024.

It has always somewhat as though, unlike Johnny, Kreese as outlived his usefulness in the story. Yet the writers keep bringing him back. That’s not really the fault of Kove, who is an all-in actor, but the pantomime side of Kreese more often makes him feel like a throwback rather than a properly rounded character.

As for the rest of the cast, we’d highlight Yuji Okumoto as Chozen, a late addition to the series (who appeared in ‘The Karate Kid Part II’) and who has proved to be a very welcome part of the show, capable of comedy, drama and action.

And while some of the teen characters trend towards melodrama at times, they’re always watchable, especially breakout star Xolo Maridueña as Miguel Diaz.

We’ll be sorry to see ‘Cobra Kai’ go, but A) at least, on the evidence of this, it’s going out while there are still worthwhile stories to tell. And B), there are still 10 more episodes to come.

And the blend of comedy, drama and (though there has less of it in this initial chunk) martial arts action remains strong. ‘Cobra Kai’ still strikes hard.

‘Cobra Kai’ Season 6 Part 1 receives 8.5 out of 10 stars.

While it looked like Latino superhero tale ‘Blue Beetle’ might have arrived at exactly the wrong time –– just as the DC movie universe overseen by Zack Snyder was being swept aside for the new regime run by James Gunn and Peter Safran of the rechristened DC Studios –– there was chatter at the time (including from Gunn) that it might not be the last we’d see of Jaime Reyes, the character played on screen by ‘Cobra Kai’s Xolo Maridueña.

And indeed, that appears to be true, since Deadline reports that an animated series based on the Reyes character and his bonded armor is now in the works.

Recent college grad Reyes returns home full of aspirations for his future, only to find that home is not quite as he left it. As he searches to find his purpose in the world, fate intervenes when Jaime unexpectedly finds himself in possession of an ancient relic of alien biotechnology: the Scarab.

When the Scarab suddenly chooses Jaime to be its symbiotic host, he is bestowed with an incredible suit of armor capable of extraordinary and unpredictable powers, forever changing his destiny as he becomes the Blue Beetle.

Originally created by artist Charles Nicholas Wojtkoski and writer Will Eisner for Fox Comics’ ‘Mystery Men’ Comics in 1939, Blue Beetle was introduced as Dan Garret, a vigilante who fought crime using powers gained from chemical compound Vitamin 2-X, though that origin was later retconned to an archeologist with a suit and abilities derived from the alien Khaji Da scarab living weapon. He was succeeded by tech whizz Ted Kord, first appearing in Charlton Comics (which bought Fox and was itself later taken over by DC).

The Jaime Reyes version, a creation of Keith Giffen, John Rogers and Cully Hamner for 2006’s ‘Infinite Crisis Issue 5, spawned a titular title two months later in May of that year. In his story, Reyes discovered the Blue Beetle scarab on the way home from school with two of his best friends Paco and Brenda, half-buried in a disused lot. Reyes took the scarab home, curious as to what it might be. That night, the scarab came alive, and grafted itself to the base of Jaime’s spine, and provided him with a suit of extraterrestrial armor, which can be modified to enhance his speed and strength, as well as to create weapons, wings, and shields.

While there is no confirmed casting yet, Deadline’s story mentions that overtures have been made to the main cast from the movie, and all seem willing –– assuming contracts are signed –– to return. And there is the possibility that a successful run could see a live-action return to the big screen for Maridueña and co.

The latest movie from the DC cinematic universe showcases Jaime Reyes as he gains incredible superhero powers from an ancient alien tech known as The Scarab.

Blue Beetle was first introduced in comic books in 1939 and has since made appearances in animated shows such as ‘Young Justice’, and live-action TV series such as ‘Smallville’. The film marks the Latino superhero’s first entry into the DCU, where it focuses on the origin of his power and the introduction of Kord Industries.

    bPogMjjjIxefJs060kWLP1

Aside from great action sequences, the film also highlights Jaime’s family. Their close-knit relationship shows that not all superheroes need to go it alone. The Reyes family was always a part of the character’s story, and showcasing this in the movie adds an extra layer of emotion and heart.

The official synopsis for ‘Blue Beetle‘ is below:

As the newest superhero in the DCU line-up since James Gunn and Peter Safran took over as co-CEO, fans wonder if Blue Beetle will return in future projects. James Gunn took to his Instagram account with a photo from the screening to confirm that Jaime Reyes will remain in the DCU, “I can’t wait for audiences to meet Jaime Reyes, who will be an amazing part of the DCU going forward!”

Currently, there’s no word on whether a ‘Blue Beetle’ sequel is in development. However, this doesn’t mean Maridueña won’t show up in upcoming DC projects. Gunn has also confirmed that John Cena and Viola Davis will continue to have a presence in the DCU as their characters, Peacemaker and Amanda Waller.

When ‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’ arrives in December, it’ll make the official demarcation point between what was known by fans as the DC Extended Universe (or the “Snyderverse” given Zack Snyder’s extensive involvement in launching it with ‘Man of Steel’ and other movies) and the DC Studios era currently being shepherded by filmmaker James Gunn and producer Peter Safran, who are sharing the duties of running the Warner Bros. arm.

And fans are naturally interested to know whether there will be much crossover between actors from the previous movie universe and the Gunn/Safran era, which has often sounded like a reboot, bringing in lots of new elements.

Henry Cavill, for instance, is no longer playing Clark Kent/Superman, with Gunn preparing ‘Superman: Legacy’, which will see David Corenswet taking over the role, with Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane.

    OT00arSyAacXCGscjvNND4

The future for Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman is also cloudy, as despite comments from the actor herself, there is no official confirmation that she’ll be back. Gunn announced a series set in the days of the Amazon warriors before Diana Prince’s birth as part of his first batch of projects.

So, who will be sticking around? Given that at least two of them were part of shows that Gunn has previously said will be part of his plans, they are not a surprise, but he’s now gone on the record again.

According to Gunn’s latest comments, both Viola Davis (who plays ambitious Suicide Squad wrangler Amanda Waller) and gung-ho vigilante Peacemaker himself, John Cena, will both be sticking around.

Commenting on the questions, Gunn wrote:

“Nothing is cannon until ‘Creature Commandos’ next year –– a sort of aperitif to the DCU –– & then a deeper dive into the universe with ‘Superman: Legacy’ after that. It’s a very human drive to want to understand everything all the time, but I think it’s okay to be confused on what’s happening in the DCU since no one has seen anything from the DCU yet. And, yes, some actors will be playing characters they’ve played in other stories & some plot points might be consistent with plot points from dozens of films, shows & animated projects that have come from DC in the past. But nothing is canon until ‘CC’ and ‘Legacy’.”

‘Creature Commandos’ will feature a voice cast that includes Davis as Waller, and a ‘Peacemaker’ spin-off featuring the character has been announced. Cena, meanwhile, will be back for the planned second season of ‘Peacemaker’ (even if it’ll likely have to wait until ‘Waller’ and ‘Legacy’ are complete).

Xolo Maridueña will still be Blue Beetle

Gunn has previously said that Xolo Maridueña, who starred as Jaime Reyes, the main character in this year’s ‘Blue Beetle’ will be staying around, despite the movie’s relatively low $125 million worldwide gross (from an estimated budget of $104 million before marketing costs). He hasn’t specified since then, and there is no ‘Blue Beetle’ sequel on the books, but Maridueña could well show up in other projects.

‘Creature Commandos’ will be on Max next year, while ‘Superman: Legacy’ is scheduled for release on July 11th, 2025. With the WGA strike now over, the writer/director can get back to work on the script, while hopes are high that the actors will be available once SAG-AFTRA’s own industrial action is complete, and performers have a decent new deal from the studios.

Making his DCU debut, ‘Blue Beetle’ is filled with action, humor, and a strong family dynamic that tugs at the heartstring. Recent college graduate Jaime Reyes unexpectedly crosses paths with an alien biotechnology that gives him incredible power but pits him against the dangerous Kord Industries in Warner Bros.’s latest superhero comic book movie.

What Is The Story of ‘Blue Beetle’?

In ‘Blue Beetle,’ we find Jaime Reyes as he returns home after graduating from college. What should be a time of celebration for the young graduate quickly turns gloomy as Jaime realized that his home was not how he had left it. As he settles back into his house and figures out how he can help his family, he unexpectedly comes into possession of an ancient relic of alien biotechnology known as the Scarab.

When the Scarab chooses Jaime to be its host, he is granted an advanced suit of armor that allows incredible and sometimes unexpected power. Once Kord Industries learns of this, they plan to hunt down Jaime and take the Scarab from him by any means necessary.

This is the Blue Beetle’s official entry into the DC Cinematic Universe. Aside from appearing in comic books starting in 1939, Blue Beetle has also appeared in the DC animated series ‘Young Justice’ and the TV show ‘Smallville.’

Xolo Maridueña is outstanding as Jaime Reyes/Blue Beetle, adding his own charm to the character. Jaime has to toe the balance of being excited and apprehensive about his new power while staying grounded enough to understand the dangerous situation he’s in. Maridueña’s performance brought it all to life, as well as the delivering intense fight scenes and emotional moments.

As a young superhero’s origin story, the movie stayed focused on Jaime’s journey of becoming Blue Beetle and how to protect his family from the relentless Kord Industries rather than having him save the world in his first entry into the DCU, keeping the story grounded. The film also spends a good amount of time with Jaime’s close-knit family, hitting many heartfelt moments that elevate the movie.

    Story and Direction

Xolo Mariduena and director Angel Manuel Soto on the set of Warner Bros. Pictures’ action adventure 'Blue Beetle,'a Warner Bros. Pictures release.

The film is directed by Angel Manuel Soto and written by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer. The movie quickly introduces Kord Industries and their quest to find the alien biotechnology known as the Scarab. CEO Victoria Kord (Susan Sarandon) also alludes to her intention to weaponize the alien technology, as well as her plan for the “One Man Army Corp,” better known as “OMAC.”

Jaime Reyes returns home after graduating college, excited to see his family. Much to his dismay, some unexpected news dampens the mood. The family is facing financial hardship, with their business closing and on the verge of losing their home. It’s subtle, but the film makes a point to show the gentrification of Jaime’s hometown – new corporate businesses such as Starbucks taking over the space of shuttered local businesses.

To help out his family, Jaime and his sister Milagro (Belissa Escobedo) work at a luxury resort owned by Kord Industries, putting him in the path of Victoria Kord and Jenny Kord (Bruna Marquezine) and, inevitably, the Scarab.

Without knowing, Jaime takes the Scarab home, where it deems him to be a suitable host. Once bonded with the Scarab, the movie kicks into high gear – taking the typical journey of Jaime learning how to use and understand its powers and the threat that comes with it.

The movie moves quickly in its 2 hours and 7 minute runtime but never felt rushed. It establishes the essential points efficiently so the characters can have their time to shine. While it is titled ‘Blue Beetle,’ the movie never forgets that Jaime’s family is equally as important as he is. They are there every step of the way – from the terrifying moment when the Scarab attaches itself to Jaime to supporting him emotionally when he needs it the most.

The attention given to the Reyes family is wonderful, but the same couldn’t be said for the antagonist of the film. The ambitious Victoria Kord will stop at nothing until she can get her hands on the Scarab, but the character remains a surface-level villain at best.

When one thinks of superhero or comic book movie, explosive action sequences and flashy CGI comes to mind. ‘Blue Beetle’ has plenty of that and does it well, but the best part about this movie is Jaime and his family. They have a close relationship that results in playful banter that had the audience in stitches and more importantly, an understanding that the most essential thing about their family is always to support one another no matter what.

The spotlight on the Reyes family gives a valuable and significant representation of the Latino community and culture, and serves as the heartbeat of the film.

This was a solid entry for ‘Blue Beetle’ as a superhero’s origin story. It’s a refreshing take on the Blue Beetle origin and has all the elements that make a great comic book movie – entertaining, great action, and humor. Great to see the writer and director didn’t feel the need to have a superhero who has just come into his powers save the world. Instead, it stayed contained to let the new hero shine at his own pace. More importantly, the Reyes family gave the story all the right emotions in the right places and is the best part of the film.

‘Blue Beetle’ receives 8 out of 10 stars.

Having caused ripples with filmmakers and nervous feelings for already-threatened theater chains during the pandemic by putting a swathe of movies either directly on streaming service HBO Max or releasing them day-and-date online, Warner Bros. was somewhat naturally ready to go all-in on the big s screen as part of its presentation to cinemas bosses.

Warner Bros. Discovery boss David Zaslav opened with his commitment to theatrical, adding that the studio has 14 movies planned for cinemas in 2023, looking to ramp up to 20 in the coming years.

“I’m convinced, there is no other place to see a motion picture, to have impacts on all parts of the world…we believe in full windowing of the business, we don’t believe in streaming. We’re in no rush to bring movies to Max,” he said, referring to the to-be-retitled streaming service.

Zaslav has a longstanding business relationship with Oprah Winfrey (he oversaw development on her OWN network) and helped to introduce a project she’s deeply involved with –– the new musical version of Steven Spielberg’s ‘The Color Purple’.

Winfrey took the stage with the movie’s director Blitz Bazawule and told the room it was her first time at CinemaCon. “This is first circle moment for me to be a part of this film,” said Winfrey who starred in that original adaptation of the Alice Walker novel.

Winfrey said that the new musical version brings “magical realism, wholesome family goodness” to the screen. She happily introduced Bazawule,

“We knew you were the director to bring this version to the screen. How did you know you were the one?”

‘The Color Purple’ might indicate prestige, but pink was really the color for both the opening of the presentation –– launched by distribution chiefs Jeff Goldstein and Andrew Cripps who were decked out in hot pink suits with ties and sneakers to match –– and of ‘Barbie’, which has been making waves following its trailer and poster launch.

Co-writer/director Greta Gerwig took the stage with stars Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, and America Ferrera to promote the movie, with Gerwig laughing as she told partner/co-writer Noah Baumbach to “move aside” when he suggested he might direct.

But the star of the presentation was Gosling –– clad in a pink jacket –– who revealed how the filmmakers helped him find the character of Ken.

    Here’s what he said,

“I have to be honest, I had up until this point, I only knew Ken from afar. I didn’t know Ken from within,” the actor explained. “If I’m being really honest, I doubted my Ken-ergy. I didn’t see it. Margot and Greta, I feel like they conjured this out of me somewhere.”

The foursome debuted some unseen footage, which helped flesh out the story of the movie as seen in the recent trailer. Robbie’s title character is seemingly going about her technicolor life until strange things start happening, like cold showers and burnt waffles and then the ultimate ailment — flat feet. Her fellow Barbies suggest she go and see “weird Barbie,” played by Kate McKinnon who offers two options, to go back to her regular Barbie life or real-life as displayed by a stiletto or a Birkenstock.

Barbie then sets off on a journey to the real world and is surprised by Ken who joins her in the backseat of her convertible.

‘Barbie’ drives into theaters on July 21st.

    ‘The Meg 2: The Trench’

From the looks of the trailer for the giant shark sequel, the filmmakers (including director Ben Wheatley) are doubling down on the monster action, bringing lots more creatures plus a new, bigger Megalodon shark.

Jason Statham returns as the heroic Jonas, seen in the footage leaping into the air on a jet ski to face off against a shark with a sword. Are we getting into ‘Sharknado’ territory? Possibly, but that’s part of the fun.

The Meg 2: The Trench’ chomps its ways into theaters on August 4th.

    ’Wonka’

Timothée Chalamet was on hand to bring fresh footage from ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ prequel ‘Wonka’, in which he plays the candy creator.

The trailer, which was for the room only, showed off plenty of mainstays of the Willy Wonka character, including chocolate that makes one float, and a surprise: Hugh Grant as an Oompa-Loompa, which got big laughs from the crowd. Chalamet called working with Grant as a “dream come true.” He added of the Oompa-Loompa character, “it was a trip.”

Directed by ‘Paddington’s Paul King, the musical movie will sing for its supper (and more likely dessert) in theaters from December 15th.

Chalamet was back, joined by co-star Zendaya and director Denis Villeneuve on stage to show off teaser footage for the second part of Villeneuve’s giant sci-fi adaptation.

This time, we’re promised more action as Chalamet’s Paul Atreides starts his battle to avenge his murdered family and free the planet Arrakis from the cruel Harkonnens. Zendaya is back –– and actually part of the story this time –– as Chani, a warrior from the native Fremen.

The footage showed some big moments, such as Paul riding one of the native Sandworm creatures, plus new cast members such as Florence Pugh and Austin Butler, who will be Princess Irulan and the calculating sword-slinger Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen. Who hopefully doesn’t sound like Elvis Presley.

Dune: Part Two’ heads to theaters on November 3rd.

    ‘The Nun 2’

There was horror to be found with the sequel to ‘Conjuring’ spin-off ‘The Nun’, with a first look at the new movie, directed by Michael Chaves.

As expected, it’s scary stuff, with young girls playing a dare game that soon turns terrifying. Taissa Farmiga’s Sister Irene is back to help deal with the new demonic threat. Expect freakish goat creatures, rivers of blood and lots of screaming.

Farmiga and co-star Storm Reid took the stage to talk up the film with the former explaining that Sister Irene returns because “she has a strong sense of duty”. Filming at a real abandoned church in France frightened Farmiga so much that she needed an escort to walk her around the location.

‘The Nun’ will vow to frighten audiences on September 8th.

James Wan’s ‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’ kicked off a half hour chunk of the presentation dedicated to DC movies.

Though James Gunn is away touring the world for ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,’ he sent a video message. Fellow DC Studios CEO Peter Safran was in person to talk up the slate.

    Here’s what he said,

“Each of these films not only delivers a stunning cinematic experience that uniquely highlights our iconic DC heroes, but they also blaze a trail forward into our DC universe that we are cracking with our next chapter.”

Neither James Wan nor star Jason Momoa were on hand, though they appeared via video to introduce a new trailer for the aquatic hero’s sequel.

Wan said ‘Aquaman 2’ visits “beautiful, strange new worlds” where it explores “interesting new characters.” “It’s an action-adventure story with a really fun bromance between Arthur (Momoa) and Orm (Patrick Wilson). Orm was a villain the first time around, but this time Arthur needs him.”

As for the trailer, it finds Momoa battling Yahya Abdul Mateen II’s Black Manta –– who this time has his own Trident, and is causing big trouble for our hero, requiring the Orm assist. Oh, and Aquaman has a child now.

The movie swims to theaters on December 20th.

Blue Beetle’ director Angel Manuel Soto and star Xolo Maridueña brought an extended trailer for the movie about a young man who becomes an unwitting superhero (at least until he embraces the powers granted him by a weird scarab).

Unlike some other heroes, Maridueña’s Jamie Reyes has a family who knows about his superhero side. “Good luck hiding something from your Latino mother,” Soto said to laughs, while Maridueña described his character as the only superhero who doesn’t seem to want his powers.

A new trailer for ‘The Flash’ was shown, adding in more to the story of Barry Allen’s troubles with the multiverse.

Directed by Andy Muschietti, the superhero film finds Barry (Ezra Miller) causing problems when he uses his powers to save his parents – and breaks the universe in the process. As the trailer shows, he’ll need the help of Michael Keaton’s Batman and Sasha Calle’s Supergirl to stop a multiverse variant of ‘Man of Steel’s General Zod (Michael Shannon), who has free rein in a world where heroes don’t appear to exist.

  • TV Review: ‘Cobra Kai Season 5

Ralph Macchio, William Zabka, Yuji Okumoto, Courtney Henggeler in Netflix's 'Coba Kai' season 5.
(L to R) Ralph Macchio, William Zabka, Yuji Okumoto, Courtney Henggeler in Netflix’s ‘Coba Kai’ season 5.

‘Cobra Kai’, which just returned to Netflix, has reached Season 5, an accomplishment even its creators might be surprised to see.

The series, which continues the story from ‘The Karate Kid’ movies (the first three, at least), has become one of Netflix’s most entertaining titles, walking the line between camp and cult comedy drama, all while finding new ways to explore its various characters.

We’re a long way from where we started – the show kicked off by catching up with rivals Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) and Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) 30 years since the events of the ‘Karate’ movies. While Daniel is a happily married, settled and slightly smug owner of several car lots, Johnny is down on his luck, the former bully now making ends meet in a crappy apartment building where he’s also the manager.

Their reunion was far from peaceful, the old resentments bubbling to the surface once more as Johnny looked to restart the Cobra Kai dojo to help get his life back on track and Daniel, in response, launched the Miyagi-Do dojo named for his old master Mr. Miyagi (the late Pat Morita) in the house that Miyagi left Daniel in his will.

Since then, Johnny and Daniel have come to more of an understanding, and even managed to find common ground, joining forces to work against the ever-more powerful Cobra Kai facility, snatched from Johnny first by his own old master, John Kreese (Martin Kove) and now in the hands of the scheming Terry Silver (Thomas Ian Griffith) from ‘The Karate Kid Part III

As Season 4 closed out, Silver’s students triumphed at the All-Valley Karate tournament, and thanks to Johnny and Daniel’s misplaced bravado, they’d promised to close down their dojos if Cobra Kai won.

Season 5 opens shortly afterwards, with Silver plotting to expand Cobra Kai’s footprint in both the San Fernando Valley and beyond, looking to take his merciless style of martial arts tuition nationwide.

Naturally, our heroes react to this news in different ways. Daniel retreats back to business and family, looking to get out of karate altogether (you can guess how long that lasts), while the more bullish Johnny looks to fight back, but not before figuring out how to bring in more money by figuring out how to drive for ride share services and food delivery apps.

William Zabka as Johnny Lawrence, Ralph Macchio as Daniel LaRusso, Yuji Okumoto as Chozen Toguchi in 'Cobra Kai.'

Given that Johnny’s attitude is still firmly in the 1980s and rock/metal music, he doesn’t exactly rack up the five star reviews in one of the show’s trademark, funny Johnny-is-bad-at-modern-life montages.

There’s also the small matter of tracking down Miguel (Xolo Maridueña), who headed off to Mexico to find his real father.

Because the show is never just about Daniel, Johnny or the other adults in the story. In expanding the narrative from the beginning, creators/show-runners Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg cannily created a cadre of students around the main characters so as to provide plenty of plots to follow.

In the past, some of these have proved less entertaining than the evolving lives of Johnny and Daniel, dipping into schmaltzy teen romance and rivalries of their own, but they’ve also grown and developed, and we’ve learned to like such characters as Miguel (one of Johnny’s earliest students, and son of Lawrence’s girlfriend Carmen, played Vanessa Rubio), Hawk (Jacob Bertrand), Tory (Peyton List), and Robby, Johnny’s actual, formerly estranged son (Tanner Buchanan).

For Daniel’s part, his family all have their roles to play, particularly daughter Samantha, a fervent follower of Miyagi-Do karate who spent much of last season dealing with trauma after an attack by Tory. She’s on a more even keel here and can fully participate in the battle against Cobra Kai.

Yet even Tory, who was one of the villainous Dojo’s champions, is beginning to suspect that all is not well under Terry Silver, leading to some fun digging into ways to take him down.

Finally, there’s former Cobra Kai boss Kreese, languishing in the slammer and largely playing out prison drama for most of the season.

A true highlight of this latest season is Yuji Okumoto’s Chozen, who movie fans will know as Daniel’s big rival in ‘The Karate Kid Part II’. Re-introduced in season four as a much more balanced, calm individual (though still highly skilled with fists and feet), he’s become something of a friend and mentor to LaRusso and provides both the most memorable action and laughs in the show, especially the scene where he trains the combined Miyagi-Do and Eagle Fang teens in ways to fight back against the highly trained, vicious Cobra Kai students.

Though it might not quite go as big as some previous seasons (there is nothing to quite match the ever-expanding high school rumble that closed out Season 2 or the siege of the LaRusso house at the end of Season 3), Season 5 does offer plenty for fans to enjoy, including seeing the older characters truly teaming up and better storylines for the likes of Amanda LaRusso (Courtney Henggeler), who feels more involved this time around.

As ever, the season shows the creator’s continued canny thinking when drawing from the franchise’s past. Old flames and former foes both show up here, though neither in ways you’d quite expect (there is great use made of one particular character from the third movie, though we won’t spoil it here).

While legacy sequels continue to be a big trend, ‘Cobra Kai’ was ahead of the game on that front and continues to be one of the best examples of how to follow up a much-loved movie (or franchise) knowingly, smartly, and occasionally hilariously. It’s never afraid to be silly when necessary and fully understands the appeal of the movies it draws from. The show will poke fun, but it’s also always respectful of the stakes.

    No mercy!

‘Cobra Kai’ Season 5 receives 4 out of 5 stars.
