  • New ‘Stranger Things 4’ Trailer Promises War is Coming

Just when the residents of Hawkins, Indiana (population: dwindling fast) thought that they’d finally put supernatural threats behind them following the traumatic events of the Battle of Starcourt, the new trailer for ‘Stranger Things’ fourth season suggests that their troubles are far from over. War is coming… and no-one is safe.

And that includes those such as Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown), Will Byers (Noah Schnapp) and his family, who moved away to Southern California at the end of the last season. While Eleven is having trouble fitting into a new school, she’s soon informed by Sam Owens (Paul Reiser) that her particular set of mysterious skills are needed back in Hawkins.

There’s just one small problem with that plan: she doesn’t have them anymore.

Yet back in Hawkins, things continue to be, well, strange. Mike (Finn Wolfhard), Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo) and Lucas (Caleb McLaughlin) are facing their own challenges, moving on up to Hawkins high school and all the potential bullying, hormonal issues and fashion challenges that presents.

But possibly having an even harder time is Sadie Sink’s Max Mayfield, who is still grieving the death of brother Billy (Dacre Montgomery), who sacrificed himself in the big battle. Not only is Max struggling with loss, but she also appears to have develop some interesting new abilities of her own, if the shot of her floating above the others is anything to go by.

    dssovBxO

Whether it’s her or someone else achieving that, they’ll need the help, as something even more terrifying is on the way and a giant conflict is bubbling away, with some of it tied to the creepy new location of the Creel House.

Then there’s poor old Jim Hopper (David Harbour), locked away in a prison in Kamchatka, Russia, where life seems to be just as rough – what we must wonder now is how he gets free? We’ll get that answer, plus some flashbacks to fill in other story gaps in a season that promises to wrap the plot up.

For those who might not have seen the announcement a couple of months ago, the new season is so epic and huge that the creators (and Netflix) have opted to split it in two.

“With nine scripts, over eight-hundred pages, almost two years of filming, thousands of visual effects shots, and a runtime nearly twice the length of any previous season, ‘Stranger Things 4’ was the most challenging season yet, but also the most rewarding one,” wrote the Duffer brothers. “Everyone involved is incredibly proud of the results, and we can’t wait to share it with you. Given the unprecedented length, and to get it to you as soon as possible, Season 4 will be released in two volumes.”

Expect the first batch of episodes on May 27th, with the second haul following on July 1st. Bad news for those who were looking forward to their latest ‘Things’ binge, but good news in that the season will be able to contain more of the sprawling story.

  • A ‘Beetlejuice’ Sequel Probably Won’t Happen

A ‘Beetlejuice’ Sequel Probably Won’t Happen

    Warner Bros.

More than 30 years after the film hit theaters, talk of making a sequel to classic horror-comedy “Beetlejuice” is still percolating. But how likely is it that that film will ever materialize?

According to director Tim Burton, fans shouldn’t hold their breath. A new report from USA Today says that when asked what was happening with “Beetlejuice 2,” the filmmaker “mumbled” an answer of “Nothing, nothing.”

When asked directly if the movie would ever get made, Burton replied, “I don’t know. I doubt it.”

Warner Bros. also seemed to put the nail in the sequel’s coffin, with a studio spokesperson telling USA Today that “the project isn’t in active development.”

So what gives? After all, Burton and stars Michael Keaton and Winona Ryder have all publicly discussed the sequel in recent years. Warner Bros. even hired a new screenwriter for the project back in 2017, and reportedly had plans in place to get “Beetlejuice 2” into theaters in time for the 1988 film’s 30th anniversary.

Original co-screenwriter Larry Wilson thinks that it all comes down to the story, and trying to put a new spin on the original writing and offbeat vibe of the first film is no small task.

“The bottom line is, Tim Burton and Michael Keaton are not going to think about a ‘Beetlejuice’ sequel unless it somehow catches the energy of the first film. And that’s not easy,” Wilson explained to USA Today. “‘Beetlejuice’ really was lightning in a bottle.”

That being said, Wilson added that the creative team was very eager to check out the new “Beetlejuice” musical, which is opening on Broadway later this month. If all goes according to plan, it could perhaps relaunch plans for a sequel.

“It seems like they have really reinvented the movie and it’s looking like a real hit,” Wilson told USA Today. “So we’ll sit tight until then.”

Maybe keep your striped suit on standby, just in case.

  • 11 Things You Never Knew About ‘Heathers’ on its 30th Anniversary

11 Things You Never Knew About ‘Heathers’ on its 30th Anniversary

    New World Pictures

While it didn’t get much attention early on, “Heathers” has become a bona fide cult classic and is now regarded as one of the great high school movies of the 1980’s. Celebrate the 30th anniversary of this subversive, dark comedy by learning some interesting facts about “Heathers.”

    1. Writer Daniel Waters wanted Stanley Kubrick to direct the film, believing Kubrick to be the only director with enough clout to get a three-hour cut greenlit.

    2. While Kubrick obviously didn’t sign on, the film does feature an homage to his work. The opening cafeteria scene is heavily inspired by the barracks scene from “Full Metal Jacket“.

    Warner Bros.

    3. The name “Heather” is spoken exactly 90 times during the course of the film.

    4. Drew Barrymore, Jennifer Connelly and Justine Bateman were all approached for the role of Veronica before Winona Ryder was cast. Reportedly many actors turned down parts out of concern for the film’s dark subject matter.

    New World Pictures

    5. On the other hand, Brad Pitt tried out for the role of J.D. and was rejected because he was “too nice” to be convincing.

    6. The name J.D. is an homage to “The Catcher in the Rye” author J.D. Salinger. Reportedly, Salinger refused to allow his book to be used in the film, hence why the students are seen reading the public domain work “Moby Dick” instead.

    7. Shannon Doherty was reluctant to dye her hair for the role of Heather Duke, so she and the producers reached a compromise by dying her hair red instead.

    New World Pictures

    8. Australian pop-punk band The Veronicas chose their name specifically as a tribute to Ryder’s character.

    9. “Heathers” was adapted into a stage musical in 2010 by Laurence O’Keefe and Kevin Murphy. The show had an off-Broadway run from March to August of 2014. (You might remember some of the songs from “Riverdale” a couple of weeks ago.)

    Paramount Network

    10. “Heathers” was also adapted into a TV series on the Paramount Network in 2018, though the first season was largely panned by critics who felt it failed to live up to the original film.

    11. Waters has revealed his idea for a potential “Heathers 2,” envisioning a sequel where Veronica begins working as an assistant for a US senator named Heather.  Ryder has voiced an interest in reprising her role. Could it happen?

  • 11 Things You Didn’t Know About ‘Reality Bites’ on its 25th Anniversary

11 Things You Didn’t Know About ‘Reality Bites’ on its 25th Anniversary

    Universal Pictures

Reality Bites” debuted in 1994, coming along at the perfect time to serve as one of the quintessential movies about the Generation X experience. And now that the movie is 25 years old, those same Gen-X’ers are probably feeling very old right about now. Ease that sting by reading some fun facts about this cult classic romantic drama.

    1. Ben Stiller was approached by the film’s producers on the strength of the pilot episode for “The Ben Stiller Show.” Originally Stiller signed on only to direct, but he eventually took on the role of Michael Grates as well.

    2. The film was originally titled “The Real World,” but had to be changed after MTV debuted the reality TV series of the same name.

    MTV

    3. While the movie is set in Houston, most of the interior shots were filmed in Los Angeles instead.

    4. Winona Ryder was so adamant that co-star Ethan Hawke be included that she made his casting a stipulation of her contract.

    Universal Pictures

    5. Ryder also campaigned for Janeane Garafalo after Garafalo was temporarily fired during production over disagreements with Stiller.

    6. Quentin Tarantino attempted to include The Knack’s “My Sharona” in the soundtrack to “Pulp Fiction,” only to discover “Reality Bites” had beaten him to the punch.

    Giphy

    7. As for Lisa Loeb’s “Stay,” that song was added to the soundtrack at the express request of Hawke.

    8. Writer Helen Childress was a 19-year-old college freshman when she penned the screenplay.

    9. “Reality Bites” originally featured a subplot about Leilana’s sister struggling with rehab for alcoholism, but these scenes were cut from the final film.

    Universal Pictures

    10. Both Stiller’s mother, Anne Meara, and sister Amy have small roles in the film. The former plays  the woman who requests a definition for irony and the latter plays the telephone psychic.

    11. A man named Troy Dyer sued Childress, Stiller and producer Danny DeVito in 2005, complaining the film’s DVD commentary track caused people to associate him with Ethan Hawke’s character. The suit was eventually settled when Childress provided Dyer with written confirmation that he had no connection to the film.

Talk About a ‘Destination Wedding’: Keanu Reeves Thrills Newlyweds With Excellent Photo

    Destination Wedding
    Regatta

    Woah.

A couple’s wedding day is memorable on its own, but two newlyweds also got the bonus of Ted/Neo/Constantine/John Wick as a semi-guest.

It seems to have happened naturally, but it’s also a nice tie-in for Keanu Reeves‘ new movie “Destination Wedding.”

Leslie Walker and Jarrod Camara got married at the Dream Inn last weekend in Santa Cruz, and apparently Keanu just happened to be at the hotel bar. One of the groomsmen pointed it out, and the couple got a photo with the star.

Jarrod’s mom Darlette shared a photo, and her excitement, with local ABC7 News:

“To have him there was just the icing on the cake so to speak! I was just like, ‘I can’t believe it’s Keanu Reeves, right there. He was just so sweet, the nicest person. We walked in, he was in his motorcycle gear having a drink and coffee or whatever and we interrupted him and he was so gracious.’”

Has anyone ever heard a bad word about Keanu Reeves? It was his birthday on September 2, and as far as we know he’s been the most excellent dude in Hollywood for all 54 years. It’s dangerous to have Keanu at a wedding, though — you might be tempted to run off and marry him instead. (Sigh. If only…)

Keanu and Winona Ryder are currently co-starring as grumpy wedding guests in “Destination Wedding,” which is playing wherever you can find it. Keanu has also been busy filming “John Wick 3,” which hits theaters next May.

  • Millie Bobby Brown Is ‘Shipping Jopper’ for ‘Stranger Things’ Season 3

Millie Bobby Brown Is ‘Shipping Jopper’ for ‘Stranger Things’ Season 3

    Stranger Things, Hopper, Joyce
    Netflix

“Stranger Things” Season 3 is meant to be set in “The Summer of Love” — at least according to Finn Wolfhard.

Millie Bobby Brown‘s Eleven ended Season 2 in a romance with Wolfhard’s Mike Wheeler. But now MBB is focused on another couple getting together: Joyce Byers (Winona Ryder) and Chief Hopper (David Harbour).

    Aka Jopper.

David Harbour recently talked to Variety about how much he’d like to see Joyce and Hopper get together. Variety asked Millie Bobby Brown about it, and she said she is totally “shipping Jopper.” She was dying to say more. But she isn’t allowed to:

“I can’t say anything about this. This is so bad. Listen, I would love for them to get together. Jopper is like my inspiration in life. Winona Ryder and David Harbor are like my parents. On set, they’re like, ‘Stop running, what are you eating, why are you eating that?’ David is like, ‘Another boy?’ And in the show, if they rekindle, that means Will and Eleven will be step-siblings. I would love that because Noah [Schnapp] is my boy best friend.”

Jopper is our inspiration, too. Here’s more of what David Harbour had teased to Variety about Hopper and Joyce:

“I think it’d be interesting to see if Hopper has it in him to be vulnerable with a woman and to actually be able to show up in that capacity, like what kind of a man he would be in a relationship if that comes to fruition. […] There may be other people in the mix in this situation, but I think they’re built for each other and I would love to see them get together. From the very beginning, I thought that these are two tortured, messed up, beautiful people who are like puzzle pieces that can’t stand each other but actually need each other.”

So sweet. Harbour had a lot more to say to Variety, including the tease that “Fletch” is one of the movies they used as inspiration this year, for the 1985-set season.

    Stranger Things GIF
    Netflix

Harbour also revealed that the father/daughter bond between Hopper and Eleven is going to be tested by puberty:

“Their relationship is going to get far more complex, because, you know, things happen to girls and boys when they’re 13 and 14. A lot of changes go on in the body and in your social life, and I don’t think he’s going to handle watching her become a woman in front of his eyes very well. That’s a horrifying thing for him — maybe even more so than fighting inter-dimensional monsters.”

“Stranger Things” Season 3 is now taping for a premiere next summer 2019 on Netflix.

  • Winona Ryder Thinks She and Keanu Reeves Really Got Married Making ‘Dracula’

Winona Ryder Thinks She and Keanu Reeves Really Got Married Making ‘Dracula’

    Destination Wedding
    Regatta

Two megastars make a movie together and accidentally get married for real during a scene filmed on Valentine’s Day.

How is that not already its own rom-com, starring the two people in question — Winona Ryder and Keanu Reeves?

Winona and Keanu were love interests in “Dracula” in 1992. They are now reuniting for the romantic comedy “Destination Wedding,” which we plan to see the minute it opens August 31.

During promotion for “Destination Wedding,” the two stars — no strangers to the word “kooky” — looked back on their “Dracula” time, with Winona musing that they might actually BE married already.

Here’s their convo with Entertainment Weekly:

Winona Ryder: “We actually got married in ‘Dracula.’ No, I swear to god I think we’re married in real life. In that scene, Francis [Ford Coppola] used a real Romanian priest. We shot the master and he did the whole thing. So I think we’re married.”

Keanu Reeves: “It’s lovely to see you again.”

Winona reminded him that they went through the whole ceremony and said “I do.”

    Keanu: “We said yes?”

Winona: “Don’t you remember that? It was on Valentine’s Day.”

Keanu: “Oh my gosh, we’re married.”

Technically they are probably aren’t married, even by whatever standards they had at the time in Romania. It’s just a fun anecdote. But fans are 100 percent behind this ’90s union … except for the ones who are already fake married to Keanu or Winona themselves:

Winona and Keanu — Weanu? Kinona? They deserve a sickeningly cute nickname, even if they aren’t dating/married in real life — also worked together in 2006’s “A Scanner Darkly” and 2009’s “The Private Lives of Pippa Lee.”

“Destination Wedding” follows two grumpy, finicky strangers invited to a mutual friends’ wedding. RSVP for tickets.

  • ‘Destination Wedding’ Trailer Reunites Winona Ryder and Keanu Reeves

It’s a ’90s dream come true in the “Destination Wedding” trailer, which reunites Keanu Reeves and Winona Ryder.

The stars first worked together on 1992’s “Dracula” and team up again for this light-hearted comedy about two socially awkward guests at the titular event. He’s grumpy and sarcastic; she’s finicky and had a thing once for the groom. They don’t like each other much at first, but their outsider status pushes them together and they start to bond.

Reeves and Ryder also worked together on 2006’s “A Scanner Darkly” and 2009’s “The Private Lives of Pippa Lee.” That history shines through even in this brief trailer.

“As a fan, I have such longstanding love for both of them and for their work, so it feels really good to see them together again,” writer/director Victor Levin told People. “And as a filmmaker, I have the benefit of their having known each other for so long. They have superb natural chemistry together, which is so important for a love story.”

“Destination Wedding” opens in theaters August 24.

  • Winona Ryder Confirms ‘Beetlejuice’ Sequel

    It’s showtime!

The ghost with the most will return for a second haunting in a “Beetlejuice” sequel, Winona Ryder confirmed Monday on “Late Night With Seth Meyers.”

The 43-year-old was asked if rumors of a sequel to the 1988 comedy are true, and she referenced a statement director Tim Burton made last year in which he said “there is a script” and that she is to appear in the project. “If he said it, then I can say it,” Ryder tells Meyers, adding, “but I don’t know much more else.”

“Beetlejuice” catapulted Ryder into superstardom when she was then 16 years old, starring opposite Geena Davis, Alec Baldwin and Michael Keaton in the title role. Though it’s been nearly 30 years since the film debuted, she says she’s surprised by how it continues to court young fans. “Little kids, I’m so touched by it. There’s so much CGI and Middle Earth, and they still love ‘Beetlejuice,’” she says.

But one thing that doesn’t surprise Ryder is when fans of the movie request that she says “Beetlejuice” three times – which summoned Keaton’s ghoulish cad character into the real world in the movie. Unfortunately the requests don’t always come at the most convenient moments. “I have not been let through airports unless I say it,” she shares. “Obviously it’s better than a strip search.”
