Once upon a time, Steven Yeun was all set to join the already sprawling cast of Marvel’s team-up movie ‘Thunderbolts’. Though Marvel had not confirmed his casting, he’d talked about the role.

And then, because the movie’s shoot had to shift because of the actors’ strike last year, his calendar filled up and he was no longer available.

Now, while his casting has yet to be confirmed, word is spreading via online scooper Daniel Richtman that Lewis Pullman –– AKA Bob in ‘Top Gun: Maverick‘ –– has an offer to take the role of Sentry in place of Yeun.

It isn’t an exact match, but the simple way of explaining the Thunderbolts is that they’re Marvel’s version of The Suicide Squad: a group of villains –– or at least anti-heroes –– brought together by third-party schemers in a possibly ill-advised attempt to turn them into a force for good.

In Marvel’s case, they were originally assembled by Baron Zemo and the Masters Of Evil and have sometimes been linked to Hulk regular General Thaddeus ‘Thunderbolt’ Ross (hence the name). They made their debut in the pages of ‘The Incredible Hulk’ in 1996, introduced by writer and artist team Peter David and Mike Deodato. They continued to their own series the same year, created by Kurt Busiek and Mark Bagley, and have been brought back with a bunch of alternative line-ups in comics ever since.

Then there’s John Walker, AKA US Agent, played by Wyatt Russell and first seen in ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’ and Hannah John-Kamen’s Ava Starr, the phasing character known as Ghost, who debuted in ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp’.

As for those overseeing the team, we have Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, AKA Val, played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who was also introduced in the ‘Falcon’ series and has since cropped up in the likes of ‘Black Widow’ and ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’. We also have Thaddeus Ross –– last seen in ‘Black Widow’ and played since ‘The Incredible Hulk’ by William Hurt. But because of the actor’s death in 2022, Marvel has had to recast the role, tapping genre icon Harrison Ford to take over.

Ross is reportedly the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s current President of the US (at least in ‘Captain America: New World Order’) so that’ll likely factor in. And ‘The Bear’s Ayo Edebiri is aboard in an unknown role.

Given the rapidly expanding universe of Marvel-based Spider-people that Sony has been bringing to the screen, news of Jennifer Lopez starring in a project called ‘Kiss of the Spider Woman’ might make you think she’ll be next to play a super-powered arachnid-influenced character.

Instead, she’s boarded a new movie musical, which adapts both the1976 novel by Argentine writer Manuel Puig and the 1993 Broadway musical that it spawned.

The musical is set in an Argentinian prison in 1981. Lopez would play the titular role, a fantasy woman named Aurora created by Luis Molina, a gay hairdresser serving an eight-year sentence for allegedly corrupting a minor.

To escape the horrors of his imprisonment, Molina imagines movies starring Aurora as a classic silver screen diva, including a role of the spider woman, who kills her prey with a kiss. Molina’s life is upended when a Marxist, Valentin Arregui Paz, is brought into his cell, and the two form an unlikely bond.

As of right now, there is no other cast attached. According to Variety’s sources, the filmmaking team is currently searching for an unknown to play Molina. In a casting breakdown obtained by the trade magazine, the role “presents as an openly queer and effeminate gay man but may be on the non-binary/trans femme spectrum.”

Rehearsals would start in February with a plan to begin filming in April in New Jersey.

The role has some storied history –– in the 1985 non-musical movie adaptation, William Hurt took the Molina part and won the Best Actor Oscar.

And the musical won seven Tony Awards, including for best musical and for all three performers: Chita Rivera, Brent Carver and Anthony Crivello. So there’s certainly scope for trophy time here if the movie turns out well.

He previously wrote the screenplay for 2002’s ‘Chicago,’ wrote and directed 2006’s ‘Dreamgirls,’ directed 2017’s ‘Beauty and the Beast’ live-action update and co-wrote the screenplay for 2017’s ‘The Greatest Showman.

He’ll be working with music by legends John Kander and Fred Ebb, and the book of the musical by Terrence McNally.

Lopez, who has a new album due next year, is aboard to produce the film via her Nuyorican Productions company.

When will ‘Kiss of the Spider Woman’ be in theaters?

Given the filming plan, we wouldn’t expect this one before 2025 at the earliest. And since it’s an independent movie, it’ll also likely need to lock down distribution.

  • New Captain America Movie Now Called ‘Brave New World’

For reasons known only to its creators and executives at Marvel for now, the latest ‘Captain America’ movie is undergoing a name change.

As seen in a new Instagram post from star Anthony Mackie, seen chilling behind the scenes with co-star Harrison Ford, the film has switched titles from ‘Captain America: New World Order’ to ‘Captain America: Brave New World’.

    https://www.instagram.com/p/CtJZRaauRzg/

What’s the story of Sam Wilson as Captain America so far?

We’ve known for a while that Mackie’s Sam “Falcon” Wilson will be back on the big screen, this time in the guise of Captain America.

The handover, of course, first occurred at the end of ‘Avengers Endgame’, where Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers arrived back from his trip to return the Infinity Stones to their rightful place in time, having decided to live a full life instead of using the quantum time-jumping system.

An elderly Steve hands a version of his iconic shield off to Sam, who is unsure whether he’s worthy. Asked how it feels, he replies, “Like it’s someone else’s”. “It isn’t,” says Rogers.

Yet it would take a lot more wrangling for Sam to finally feel ready to wield the shield and assume the mantle of Cap, an internal – and external – debate chronicled in Marvel’s Disney+ series ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’.

That show saw Sam and Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) dealing with a variety of threats (including an out-of-control US Agent, played by Wyatt Russell, who was initially crowned Cap’s replacement by the American government) but ultimately ended with Sam suiting up as the new Captain America.

And the connective tissue between the show and the new movie doesn’t end there, as Malcolm Spellman, head writer for the series, is at work on the film’s script alongside Dalan Musson, who was on his writing staff.

Julius Onah, who made ‘The Cloverfield Paradox’, is currently directing the new movie, which is continuing seemingly unaffected by the writers’ strike (which has delayed other Marvel movies and shows).

Who else is in the new ‘Captain America’?

Besides Mackie and Ford (who is playing General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, taking over the role from the late William Hurt, with the character reportedly now President of the United States), the cast list for the new movie includes Liv Tyler as Betty Ross, Rosa Salazar, Tim Blake Nelson, Shira Haas, Xosha Roquemore, plus Danny Ramirez and Carl Lumbly reprising their ‘Falcon and the Winter Soldier’ roles as Joaquin Torres and Isaiah Bradley respectively.

The movie is currently on track to hit theaters on May 3, 2024.

  • Liv Tyler Joins ‘Captain America: New World Order’

Liv Tyler in director Bryan Bertino's 'The Strangers.'
Liv Tyler in director Bryan Bertino’s ‘The Strangers.’

Given that we already know that ‘Captain America: New World Order’ will have some connections to ‘The Incredible Hulk’ –– most notably “Thunderbolt” Ross (now played by Harrison Ford following William Hurt’s death) and Samuel Sterns, AKA The Leader, played by Tim Blake Nelson, whose villainous future was only hinted at in the 2008 movie, we suppose it was only a matter of time before Betty Ross returned.

And so she has, with Liv Tyler joining ‘New World Order’ as the character who in her first appearance (and often in the comics) was the great love of Bruce Banner (though there’s no word yet on whether Mark Ruffalo will show up as Bruce).

The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Tyler is returning, which of course will make for a more emotional storyline for Ford’s first appearance as Ross (who at this point has become President of the United States).

And while a tricky rights issue means Marvel can’t make a solo Hulk movie, that hasn’t stopped them placing Betty in at least one other project –– she was seen (albeit briefly) in an episode of animated series ‘What If…?’, though there the character was voiced by Stephanie Panisello.

    38PIIqJ72BWyVUfWZQqug4

What’s the story of ‘Captain America: New World Order’?

It remains to be seen how all these Hulk hangovers affect the plot of ‘New World Order’, but the focus will be on Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) who was chosen to carry on as the new Captain America by Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers at the end of ‘Avengers: Endgame’.

Sam spent the duration of the Disney+ ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’ debating whether he should take on the mantle but embraced the role towards the end. Now he’ll be facing fresh threats as the new Cap makes his big screen debut.

Who else is in the new movie?

While we’ve yet to learn whether The Winter Soldier –– AKA Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes ––will return for the film, Danny Ramirez’ Joaquin Torres, the US Air Force lieutenant and intelligence officer to whom Sam passed the Falcon mantle (and wing suit) once he became Captain America, is back.

And Isaiah Bradley (Carl Lumbly) a former super soldier who was ill-treated by the American government will also appear.

New to the cast are Shira Haas, playing comic book character Sabra and Xosha Roquemore in an unknown role.

Behind the scenes, ‘The Cloverfield Paradox’s Julius Onah is calling the shots on the movie, which has is now in production. He’s working from a script by ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’s Malcolm Spellman and Dalan Musson.

Whether this all means that we can expect to see more of Betty in future MCU entries remains to be seen, but it’s good to have her back.

Steven Yeun’s career has been on a roll lately, and ever since leaving ‘The Walking Dead’, he’s been enjoying plenty of success on screens big and small. He was Oscar nominated for 2020 family drama ‘Minari’ and last summer appeared in Jordan Peele’s hit horror/sci-fi thriller ‘Nope’.

It was, perhaps, only a matter of time until he caught Marvel’s attention, and he’s now been cast in ‘Thunderbolts’. The movie has Jake Schreier directing and ‘Black Widow’s Eric Pearson writing the script.

  • Harrison Ford is Reportedly Joining the MCU

Harrison Ford at D23 Expo 2022.
Harrison Ford at D23 Expo 2022.

There has been chatter about this in the recent past (mostly about how it was supposed to be announced at last month’s D23 event but never materialized), but the idea that Harrison Ford will take on the mantle of the MCU’s Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross has taken a big step closer to reality.

Reporters Jeff Sneider and John Rocha brought word on their Hot Mic Podcast that the iconic actor has indeed closed a deal to play Ross in at least a couple of upcoming MCU movies.

According to the pair’s sources – which tend to be solid – Ford will make his debut as the character in ‘Captain America: New World Order’ in May 2024 and have a bigger role to play in ‘Thunderbolts’, due in theaters July of that year.

Ross was introduced to the MCU in ‘The Incredible Hulk’ back in 2008. As originally played by William Hurt, he’s the stern, no-nonsense military man and father of Betty Ross (Liv Tyler in the movie). And he’s no fan of the idea that she’s in love with Bruce Banner (Edward Norton, in his solo appearance as the character).

The Hulk connection has faded in the years since, but Ross has popped up a few times, including in ‘Captain America: Civil War’, where he is now the U.S. Secretary of State, pushing the Sokovia Accords, designed to limit superhero behavior.

He was also seen in ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame’, and his final appearance was in ‘Black Widow’ last year.

Hurt died in March of this year, and while there was thought that Marvel might simply retire the character (he’s not exactly a main player in the MCU), the decision has instead been made to cast Ford.

Marvel Studios' 'Captain America: New World Order.'
Marvel Studios’ ‘Captain America: New World Order.’

Of course, given the actor’s age, no-one expects him to be bounding around as a superhero, but since most of Ross’ scenes involved him gruffly demanding things of the Avengers, that’s certainly something Ford can handle.

And even if the studio does decide to go down the route of having Ross somehow transform into the powerful Red Hulk (as he has in the comics), well… that’s what stunt teams and visual effects are for.

Marvel has, somewhat predictably, said nothing so far about the casting, though the team at Slash Film were able to independently confirm the news.

Securing Ford would be a huge coup for Marvel, and certainly generate plenty of headlines.

Ross is a necessary part of the ‘Thunderbolts’ story, since he’s the one who puts the team (which in the movie will include Florence Pugh’s Yelena, David Harbour’s Red Guardian, Hannah John-Kamen’s Ghost, Sebastian Stan’s Winter Soldier, Wyatt Russell’s US Agent, Olga Kurylenko’s Taskmaster) together with the help of Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ Valentina.

The wait begins to see when (or even if) Marvel decides to officially announce this, though there’s every chance Ford’s version of Ross could pop up in a future end credits sting.

Meanwhile, he’ll more solidly be back on our screens for the fifth ‘Indiana Jones’ movie, headed to theaters on June 30th next year.

It was announced on Sunday that Oscar winning actor William Hurt has passed away at the age of 71, a week before his 72nd birthday, due to prostate cancer that had spread to his bones.

Born in Washington, D.C. in 1950, Hurt attended Tufts University before joining Juilliard School’s drama division, where his classmates were Robin Williams and Christopher Reeve.

Hurt began his career in the early 80’s with roles in hit movies like ‘Body Heat,’ ‘The Big Chill,’ and ‘Gorky Park.’ In the mid-80s he was nominated for Best Actor at the Oscars three years in a row for his work ‘Kiss of the Spider Woman,’ for which he won, as well as ‘Broadcast News’ and ‘Children of a Lesser God.’ He also received a Tony Award nomination in 1985 for his stage work in the play ‘Hurlyburly.’

The actor would go on to appear in such movies as ‘The Accidental Tourist,’ ‘I Love You to Death,’ ‘Lost in Space,’ ‘A.I. Artificial Intelligence,’ ‘The Village,’ ‘Syriana,’ ‘The Good Shepherd,’ Into the Wild,’ ‘Vantage Point,’ and ‘Robin Hood.’ He also received critical acclaim for his performance in the big screen adaption of the graphic novel ‘A History of Violence.’

But Hurt was probably best known to an entire generation as General Thaddeus Ross in the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies. He first played the Bruce Banner’s nemesis in ‘The Incredible Hulk,’ and followed it up with brief appearances in ‘Captain America: Civil War,’ ‘Avengers: Infinity War,’ ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ and ‘Black Widow.’

William Hurt’s final on screen role was as Père La Chaise in the fantasy movie, ‘The King’s Daughter.’ The actor has worked with some of the greatest directors in cinema history including Steven Spielberg, Woody Allen, James L. Brooks, Lawrence Kasdan, Wim Wenders, Anthony Minghella, Nora Ephron, Franco Zeffirelli, David Cronenberg, M. Night Shyamalan, and Ridley Scott.

“It is with great sadness that the Hurt family mourns the passing of William Hurt, beloved father and Oscar winning actor, on March 13, 2022, one week before his 72nd birthday,” the actor’s son, Will, said in a statement. “He died peacefully, among family, of natural causes. The family requests privacy at this time.”

William Hurt was married to actress Mary Beth Hurt from 1971 to 1982, before marrying Heidi Henderson from 1989 to 1991. He is survived by Will, and three other children.

It’s a shame we didn’t get this ‘Black Widow‘ movie a few years ago, because it’s hard to imagine that Marvel Studios wouldn’t have found a different path for Scarlett Johansson‘s Natasha Romanov in ‘Avengers: Endgame.’ This is a satisfying spy movie set in the larger MCU, and although the baton is definitely passed, we’re definitely going to miss the Black Widow that makes a final appearance in this movie.

The story starts off in Ohio in 1995, with a young Natasha and Yelena under the care of their parents, Melina (Rachel Weisz) and Alexei (David Harbour). If you’ve seen ‘The Americans’ or ‘Little Nikita,’ you have a pretty good idea what’s going on; the family is a cover for a Russian espionage operation that’s coming to a climax. Natasha and her “family” make a narrow escape from S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, and then it’s off to Cuba for a reunion with the man behind the mission, Dreykov (Ray Winstone), before heading back to Mother Russia. But young Natasha is having none of it; she and Yelena want to stay in the states, but they get pulled apart, drugged, and shipped off to the infamous Red Room to become tools of the state.

Years later, we see Natasha on the run, after the events of ‘Captain America: Civil War.’ She’s almost captured by Thunderbolt Ross (William Hurt), with this moment serving to give us a guide as to when this movie is happening in the MCU timeline. Meanwhile, in Morocco, Yelena (Florence Pugh) is targeting a fellow agent, but when Yelena is sprayed by a mysterious red dust, she seems to suddenly realize she’s been under some sort of mind control. The rest of her team promptly turns on her, before another narrow escape – it seems these run in the family.

Natasha finds Yelena hiding in her own Budapest safe house, the two “sisters” team up to find out what’s controlling the minds of the other agents in the Widow program. To find that out, they’ll end up needing the help of both of their “parents,” and the stage is set for what turns out to be a pretty effective spy thriller.

It must be said that Florence Hugh almost completely steals the whole movie; her Yelena manages to push Natasha’s buttons in a way no one else in the MCU has before, and her specific comments about Natasha’s fighting poses are pitch perfect. Hugh and Johansson have a breezy chemistry together, letting us see two women that work together effectively while still bringing up old family grudges.

While we’re talking about family, Harbour and Weisz give us former parental figures that still have real affection for their ersatz daughters, showing very real regret at what would later happen to the two girls. As with any family, there is teasing and sniping that’s hinting at decades of emotion, and all four of these actors sell it well. Weisz shows us a Melina that is trying (and failing) to convince herself that her patriotism justifies her actions. Bombastic Alexei may seem to be gleefully reliving his past glories, but Harbour lets us see that Alexei is also hiding his own regret and loss.

Director Cate Shortland has put together a pretty impressive effort here; she impresses with the action set pieces, while showing us a family that is trying to heal old wounds. We’ve waited a long time for a solo story for Natasha, and Shortland’s movie delivers an emotional arc for Nat that hits all the right emotional notes, while fitting within the greater MCU storyline. We know what’s coming for Black Widow, but that doesn’t take away from the resonance here.

There’s not much to say about the Taskmaster character that won’t quickly dip into spoiler territory, except that the stunt coordinators have done a great job showing us someone that can mimic the fighting styles of other characters, such as Hawkeye and Captain America, and even Black Widow herself. My only complaint here is that Ray Winstone seems a bit underused, and that the mind control plot isn’t that engaging. Although compared to an Infinity Gauntlet, what would be?

In the end, this is one of the better entries in the MCU franchise, and worth seeing on the big screen.

    4.5 stars.
