What’s the story of ‘Men in Black’?

The original 1997 movie –– which was a huge hit, and one of those that helped cement Will Smith as a star –– adapted the graphic novel whose concept was of a police force on Earth that kept the planet safe from alien issues, and managed extraterrestrial residents.

Smith starred as the wise-cracking Agent J, recruited from the NYPD, who partnered up with Tommy Lee Jones’ grumpy K.

2002’s ‘Men in Black II’ wasn’t as big of a success, but it still did well, and was followed by 2012’s ‘Men in Black 3’, which introduced time travel.

As mentioned, ‘Men in Black: International’, which looked to extend the story in new directions, wasn’t embraced by audiences on the same level.

What will the new ‘Men in Black’ movie be about?

Details are few and far between as to exactly how Bremner’s effort will continue the story. Will it look to craft another chapter, a la ‘International,’ or will it stay within the confines of the usual ‘MIB’ New York world? We’ll have to wait and see.

According to Deadline, the draft that’s currently being written will include Agent J somehow, and that Smith will be among the first to see it (since he’ll want approval of any screenplay before he considers signing on), but there’s no word on whether that means he’ll be the focus again or if it’ll be more along the lines of ‘Tron: Ares’ where an original star simply cameos.

When will the new ‘Men in Black’ movie be in theaters?

Sony has yet to confirm it’s even in the works yet, let alone assigning this one a release date.

TV Review: ‘Slow Horses’ Season 5

Initial Thoughts

Proving itself to be something of a slow-burn sensation, ‘Slow Horses’ has been gaining in pop cultural awareness and adulation across the last couple of years, with awards coming its way and more promotion.

There are, naturally, more eyes on Season 5 than ever before (even if the running joke is that Apple has excellent shows precious few people watch or know about beyond the megahit ‘Severance’), and thankfully, it is more than deserving of the attention.

Smith and his writers continue to mine Mick Herron’s book series for comic brilliance and suitably twisty spy tales. This season’s story, set as a mayoral election grips London and shocking violence roils the capital, is loaded down with trademark quips and naturally great roles for its main cast.

There is, in fact, even more focus on the denizens of Slough House than ever this year, and it really works.

Returning director Saul Metzstein, has a clear eye for how the show works visually, and if it’s lighter on action compared to other shows, that’s not the real focus here.

Cast and Performances

Oldman continues to prove he’s the perfect Jackson Lamb (there is a joke about penguins and Batman that is so perfectly delivered, it might make you pause the show from laughing), and as usual he anchors the ensemble.

But everyone is on their A-game here, with a welcome boost of screen time for Christopher Chung as arrogant, nerdy tech expert Roddy Ho. While he’s the sort of character you usually prefer in small doses, Chung makes him likeable enough that it works to have him enjoy more of a spotlight.

‘Slow Horses’ remains one of the best shows on TV –– streaming or otherwise –– and Season Five is just more proof of why. Perfectly pitched in terms of tone and character, it’s a sweary, funny treat.

Will Smith Teases Development on ‘Hancock’ Sequel

Was the world truly anticipating a follow-up to 2008 superhero pic ‘Hancock’?

Yes, it starred Will Smith, Jason Bateman and Charlize Theron, and it made more than $629 million worldwide from a $150 million budget, but the reviews were far from positive and it didn’t exactly enter the public consciousness in the way that, say, fellow 2008 release ‘Iron Man’ helped launch a slightly successful cinematic universe.

And these days, the odds are even more stacked against it; star Smith rebuilding his career following the Oscar slap incident of three years ago (in his defense, he’s certainly seen success with the likes of ‘Bad Boys: Ride or Die’) and audiences in general have begun to tire of the endless parade of super-beings on screen, with even the latest Marvel releases –– aside from the blip that was ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ –– no longer putting up the giant box office of years past.

Still, that isn’t stopping famed hype man Smith from talking up the latest development on a sequel to the movie about an alcoholic superhero who causes more trouble than he helps.

As reported by Deadline, the actor appeared on Canadian influencer xQc’s live stream on Twitch and answered some fan questions.

Among them? One about the ongoing potential of a new outing for Hancock. Here’s what he said:

“There’s a really cool ‘Hancock 2’ idea. We haven’t even talked about it.”

But he wasn’t done. There was also the requisite Big Celebrity Name to drop:

“I’m going to give you one little piece. Zendaya is being approached for a role in ‘Hancock 2.’ ”

Whether or not that turns out to be fanciful thinking remains to be seen. Smith is still something of a force in Hollywood, but Zendaya is no slouch in the power department and doesn’t have to say yes to just any role.

Plus, it’s not as if she doesn’t already have a good superhero gig going thanks to her role as MJ in the lucrative ‘Spider-Man’ franchise, and she also has a busy schedule right now between new ‘Euphoria’ filming, Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ and the fourth Spidey instalment.

Right now, it sounds like Smith is more putting the name out into the world as a way to try and manifest her involvement.

What was the story of the 2008 movie?

The action-comedy stars Smith as John Hancock, a disheveled superhero with extraordinary powers but a troubled, reckless attitude. Despite his ability to fly and immense strength, Hancock is disliked by the public due to his destructive methods of saving lives, which often cause collateral damage.

The film takes a turn when Hancock saves the life of a public relations executive, Ray Embrey (Bateman), who offers to help improve Hancock’s image.

As they work together, Hancock’s past is revealed, including his connection to Ray’s wife, Mary (Theron), who harbors secrets of her own. The story explores themes of redemption, accountability, and the complexity of heroism.

In the climax, Hancock learns about his true origins and the nature of his powers, leading to a confrontation with bank robber Red Parker (Eddie Marsan).

The original script was written by Vy Vincent Ngo in 1996. It languished in development hell for years with various directors attached, including Tony Scott, Michael Mann (who would later co-produce the film), Jonathan Mostow and Gabriele Muccino.

Berg was the one to finally get it to screens, with a fresh script draft from ‘Breaking Bad’ and ‘Better Call Saul’ creator Vince Gilligan.

Smith described his title character as follows:

“Hancock is not your average superhero. Every day he wakes up mad at the world. He doesn’t remember what happened to him and there’s no one to help him find the answers.”

Talk of a ‘Hancock’ sequel has been floating around since the original movie’s release, with Berg excitedly announcing in 2009 that “everyone” –– presumably Smith, Bateman and Theron –– would want to return for the sequel.

Yet in 2012, with little sign of forward movement, he was putting the delay down to an issue of getting schedules in sync while talking to Comicbookmovie.com:

“We’ve been talking about the sequel between us, Will Smith, [producers] Michael Mann and Akiva Goldsman and myself. We’re all interested, but we literally just have trouble getting into the same room at the same time. We did have a series of meetings last year and started to hash out an idea for sequel — and Will Smith actually had the idea — so I think it will happen, it’s just a question of timing.”

Finally, Theron was asked about the possibility of showing up for the new movie, but seemed to still be interested when asked by ComicBook:

“You know, for a while we [talked about a sequel]. I think closer to when the movie came out, but not in recent years, no. We’ll be super heroes with our walkers, you know. And I’ll still go! I’ll still make that movie; I would do it in a heartbeat.”

Hold on there, don’t get too excited. Despite his seeming road-to-rehabilitation image and remaining megastar influence, Will Smith saying a movie is back in the works does not mean it’ll actually get made.

And given the scheduling issues, we wouldn’t expect any completed movie much before 2027 at the earliest.

We’d guess Sony would be the ones to release it when it is finished, given that the original arrived via Columbia Pictures.

Monday, February 17th is President’s Day in the United States. Coinciding in the same month as George Washington and Abraham Lincoln’s birthdays, the holiday is now used to celebrate all U.S. Presidents, past and present.

Over the years, there have been many great movies to feature U.S. Presidents, both real and fictional. From Bill Pullman‘s President Thomas J. Yes, ‘Bad Boys’ was the movie, Michael Bay the director, and Will Smith the star. While they re-teamed for the first sequel in 2003, and Bay remained a producer for (plus made cameos in) two further follow-ups, the pair has not worked together since.

With a script that has seen contributions from Jon Hoeber, Erich Hoeber, Chris Bremner and Eric Pearson, ‘Fast and Loose’ follows John Riley (Smith), who wakes up in Tijuana after being left for dead with absolutely no memory.

Riley follows a string of clues to uncover his identity discovering he’s been living two different lives: one, as a super-successful crime kingpin, surrounded by beautiful women, expensive toys, and a lavish lifestyle, and the other as an undercover CIA agent, but with a puny salary, no family or home life whatsoever, and zero trappings of success. The problem is, he can’t remember which of these two personas is his true identity…

What’s the history of ‘Fast and Loose’?

Smith has been attached to this one for some time –– previously, ‘The Fall Guy’ director David Leitch was attached to make the movie, but he dropped out of the big chair in the wake of Smith’s slapping incident with Chris Rock at the 2022 Oscars, when Netflix hit pause on the project.

Leitch and his producing partner Kelly McCormick are still aboard to produce the movie alongside Smith, but now it looks like Bay will be calling the shots (and, if we know anything about his work, the explosions.)

Now Smith, according to Deadline, has dropped out of another big action movie, ‘Sugar Bandits’ to focus on this one and Netflix is hoping that Bay’s deal locks in.

Bay has experience with Netflix already –– he made action pic ‘6 Underground’ for the streaming service, and his most recent movie, ‘Ambulance,’ is a big hit with its viewership.

The musical biopic genre just keeps on expanding. There are a variety of projects in the works, including the recently-confirmed KISS pic ‘Shout It Out Loud’, which has McG now attached to direct.

Artists don’t always have direct say over what goes into their films –– sometimes it’s because they’ve already passed away, other times it’s because they sold their rights. But then you have someone like Queen Latifah, who intends to keep control herself.

Latifah has now confirmed via Deadline that she’ll produce a slate of hip-hop biopics about musical icons, and that she’s starting with herself.

What will Queen Latifah’s story be?

Latifah, born Dana Elise Owens in Newark, New Jersey, began her music career singing in Baptist churches and in school. She formed a rap group, Ladies Fresh, with her friends Tangy B and Landy D in response to the formation of another young women’s group.

But her career really blossomed when her mother invited a local DJ to see Latifah –– the name comes from a nickname given to her at the age of 8, which translates to “delicate and sensitive” in Arabic –– and her friends perform, and he gave a demo record of hers to the host of ‘Yo! MTV Raps,’ Fred Braithwaite.

She began to perform in bigger and bigger venues, launched several albums and began winning Grammys before diversifying into acting and producing. It’s quite the story to tell.

Here’s what Latifah said about the new effort:

“We all came into this industry together and Hip Hop has shaped each and every one of us. Hip Hop’s impact has expanded beyond just music and has created a lasting impression on culture and society overall. It is a dream to be able to collaborate with friends and colleagues that have not only a shared understanding but are able to tell these stories that were the backdrop of our lives.”

TV Review: ‘Bel-Air’ Season 3

Returning to Peacock for its third season on Thursday, August 15th with three episodes, ‘Bel-Air’ continues to answer the question “can a show that began life as a goof on the idea of a dramatic re-interpretation of a classic sitcom work on its own terms” with a qualified “yes!”

This impressively staged series still somehow manages to turn the basic concept of comedy series ‘The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air’ (yes, the show that gave Will Smith his start; the movie star is among the current series’ producers) into a show laden with melodrama and family interaction. And while there are still issues balancing it all out, it’s a watchable fresh take on the idea.

Does ‘Bel-Air’ Season 3 have fresh appeal?

Originally created as a trailer by Morgan Cooper that gave ‘The Fresh Prince’ idea a moody, dramatic make-over, the show as it stands tweaked that –– though it certainly handles some tough subjects (addiction, estranged parents, difficult relationships among them), ‘Bel-Air’ doesn’t only lean into the darker sides of the story, there’s room for comedy too, with Jabari Banks as the main Will Smith character providing the charm and chuckles as he continues to try and make life work in the glitzy environs of Bel-Air as a street kid from West Philadelphia.

He might be born and raised elsewhere, but Will still finds a way to make his way among the rich and powerful, bringing his sports experience along for the ride.

‘Bel Air’ Season 3: Script and Direction

Co-showrunners Carla Banks-Waddles, T.J. Brady and Rasheed Newson aren’t looking to change too much up in this third season, largely keeping the various stories cooking. Among them? Will’s attempt to become more successful off the basketball court, his cousin Carlton Banks’ (Olly Sholotan) experiences following rehab for narcotics addiction, Carlton’s sister Hillary (Coco Jones) balancing her love life with her career as an influencer and the Banks kids’ parents Philip (Adrian Holmes) and Vivian (Cassandra Freeman) dealing with their own issues, which in this third season, includes the freshly raised specter of infidelity.

The issues stem from the fact that they’re not the only characters the show must juggle –– there is also the likes of trusted advisor/fixer Geoffrey Thompson (played by Jimmy Akingbola) and his own plot about having his estranged son visit and how that ties into his British gangland past. Will’s friend Jazz and his financial troubles with his record store, and various significant others for the younger characters. All that means the likes of younger Banks sibling Ashley (Akira Akbar), at least in the early going, is mostly overlooked.

The directing team, including John Scott and Keesha Sharp, keep things looking good –– obviously the demands of a streaming service in the 2020s something quite different from those of a multi-cam 1990s sitcom. While there’s plenty of pressure in portraying the trappings of a wealthy family, the seams rarely show (one egregious example is in one episode of the new season set in “Downtown LA” that is so clearly a studio backlot).

As we mentioned previously, ‘Bel-Air’ has a big cast, and they’re not all given big enough storylines to get their teeth into, but they’re still solid performers.

Banks carries the lion’s share of the story and has proved to be a charismatic performer who channels Smith’s likeability in the role, even as he’s handed a more dramatic storyline. Certain more complicated emotions sometimes seem to be beyond his range, but he’s generally a watchable anchor for the show.

Where Carlton on the original series was a figure of fun known for his silly dress sense and an awkward dance named after him, ‘Bel-Air’s take is much more serious, driven by ambition and haunted by personal demons. Sholotan is more than up to the task, bringing a believable sheen to his character.

Much as with the Carlton character, the Geoffrey of the original was mostly the delivery service for witty, sarcastic humor and commentary. For ‘Bel-Air’, he’s more likely to be found investigating criminal behavior or being handy with his fists (when called upon). Like the sitcom’s version, Geoffrey is more a supporting role, but Akingbola’s such a likeably charming performer that he makes the most of it.

Other notable characters

The rest of the Banks family all have their part to play –– parents Philip and Vivian are brought more into the dramatic side of things this season with worries over their careers and the stability of their marriage, and they’re both more than up to the task. The characters of Hilary and Ashley are largely siloed in their own stories, but they have some fun moments.

‘Bel-Air’ is that rare example of a high-concept idea that has turned into an impressive show that can stand on its own.

This third season certainly shows a few growing pains –– as the ensemble has expanded, the struggle to give everyone a spot in the valuable narrative real estate becomes more and more real. And certain storylines do suffer from relatively quick wrap ups; situations can seem tough and dramatic one moment, only to be swiftly solved a couple of episodes later. Still, ‘Bel-Air’ rules where it needs to.

Moviefone recently had the pleasure of speaking with veteran actor Joe Pantoliano about his work on ‘Bad Boys: Ride or Die’, returning after his character’s death in ‘Bad Boys for Life’, Captain Howard’s love for Mike and Marcus, working with Smith and Lawrence again, shooting his scenes, and his respect for directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah.

Moviefone: To begin with, your character was killed off in ‘Bad Boys for Life’, how surprised were you to discover you would be retuning for ‘Bad Boys: Ride or Die’?

Joe Pantoliano: I wasn’t going to give them any opportunity to change their mind. “Yes, sir. May I have another?”

MF: What was it like for you to return and have a chance to play Captain Howard one more time?

JP: Oh, it was great. It was brief. I was working on something else, and I needed to get back, I was doing a play. So, they accommodated my schedule. It was a whirlwind, but it turned out to be so very good.

MF: Can you talk about Captain Howard’s love and respect for Mike and Marcus, and the trust that he’s given to them over the years?

JP: It’s a natural trajectory that played into the chemistry. In a lot of ways, it reflected our own personal journey as actors, as people, and as humans. I got to know those guys when they were kids, and then started families, and grown up in a way that I’m very proud of them as professionals and as humans.

MF: What was it like getting to work with Will Smith and Martin Lawrence again?

JP: It’s just very easy.

MF: Can you talk about shooting the “After Life” scene with Martin Lawrence?

JP: It was fascinating, because it was blue screen, and the equipment that they use. When Marcus goes back into the bed and the clothes get torn off. The equipment boggles my mind, it boggles my imagination. The forty-some years that I’ve been doing this, the idea that focus pullers can now be 200 yards away from the camera, it just boggles my mind. So, I was just like a kid in a candy store, seeing how they do all this stuff and having no idea how it gets pulled off.

MF: Finally, you began making these films with director Michael Bay but what has it been like working with Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah on these last two ‘Bad Boys’ movies?

JP: They have a childlike quality about them, and enthusiastically, and Michael Bay is one of their hugest fans. They’re huge fans of Michael Bay. So, to pay homage to what Michael created, and they adore him, and they think about that, and their collaboration with Robrecht Heyvaert, the cinematographer who’s extraordinarily creative in his own right. So, it’s a combination of the three of them. Fascinating. It’s like being a student of filmmaking, you just watch this stuff, and you go, “Wow, how did they do it?”

What is the plot of ‘Bad Boys: Ride or Die’?

When the late Captain Howard (Joe Pantoliano) is implicated in a longstanding string of drug-related crimes, the Bad Boys — Mike Lowrey (Will Smith) and Marcus Burnett (Martin Lawrence) — attempt to clear his name, only to find themselves framed as well. With a bounty on their heads, they’re forced to go on the run from the drug cartel, the local gangs, and their fellow officers in the Miami PD.
