Landing on Disney+ daily across eight days from December 22nd, the second season of Marvel’s Disney+ animated series ‘What If…?’ wraps up the show’s run –– at least for now –– with another set of episodes where several build to a grand, multiverse-hopping finale.

Disney’s Marvel arm has seen something of a renewal this year, between the success of ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ (even if that film poked plenty of fun at how tired the idea of the multiverse seems these days) and ‘Agatha All Along.’ And now here comes the welcome return of ‘What If…?’ which again blends more stand-alone stories with some clever easter eggs (and in one case, an actual egg) that knit together to spin a bigger tale around Jeffrey Wright’s powerful The Watcher. Who, it turns out, will have to answer for meddling in the affairs of different universes.

Does ‘What If…?’ Season 3 still provide multiversal fun?

In keeping with the previous two seasons, the new run of ‘What If…?’ offers a blend of intriguing possibilities and an overarching spine that only starts to reveal itself towards the end of this final eight episodes. Those who have seen the previous seasons won’t be surprised at what it is building to, though it’s mostly satisfying.

But the pleasure in this show is usually more in the individual episodes, which here run the gamut between the hilarious (one focused on Howard the Duck and his unlikely, but somehow perfect relationship) and the heartbreaking (an epic, dystopian story of what happens with a ‘Black Panther’-associated character following the near destruction of Earth by Tiamut the celestial). Indeed, there is better use of several elements of the ‘Eternals’ than in the movie itself.

Another welcome element, near prescient, given the runaway success of her solo show, is the presence of Kathryn Hahn’s Agatha Harkness.

And that’s probably about all we can say on that front, given the extensive embargoes in place on this!

    Script and Direction

The regular writing team of Matthew Chauncey, Ryan Little and A.C. Bradley are back for the season, and the scripts run the usual gamut of superb to solid. While there isn’t perhaps the knockout winner of, say, last year’s festive episode, there remains a good balance of character interaction and fascinating peeks into unusual corners of the MCU while also blending in some more comics-faithful moments for fans of the printed pages.

Bryan Andrews and Stephan Franck return to direct the episodes and the look of the show continues to evolve in subtle ways. Most of the characters will be instantly recognizable, while others, such as Obadiah Stane (voiced here by Kiff VandenHeuvel rather than Jeff Bridges) might take a moment.

    Performances

As with the past seasons, the new batch of episodes has a blend of original MCU performers (the likes of Mark Ruffalo, Anthony Mackie, Laurence Fishburne, Samuel L. Jackson, Kat Dennings, David Harbour and Hayley Atwell) rubbing shoulders –– or perhaps that should be vocal chords –– with replacements (multi-voice talent Ross Marquand the MVP here).

There are the occasionally jarring replacements, but on the whole, it’s a satisfying set of voices. Seth Green is great as usual as Howard the Duck, playing perfectly off the energy of Kat Dennings as Darcy. And kudos to Wright who, when given more to do as the Watcher than simply observe and narrate.

Oh, and you won’t tire of hearing Jackson emote the phrase “Mr. and Mrs.… The Duck.”

It’s also fun to hear the likes of Jason Isaacs –– something of a genre titan thanks to ‘Harry Potter,’ ‘Star Trek,’ ‘Star Wars’ and the DC animated appearances he’s put in –– as a powerful cosmic entity whose voice fairly drips with withering sarcasm.

    Final Thoughts

Though it may not quite hit the highs of last year’s festive season run, Season 3 of ‘What If…?’ certainly has enough pleasures to keep fans happy. And though the big finale feels a little predictable at times, it is definitely enough to leave you wishing the company would commission future seasons, especially given how effective the creative team has been in making compelling narratives fit in sub-30-minute episodes.

‘What If…?’ Season 3 receives 8 out of 10 stars.

  • First Clip from ‘What If…?’ Season 3 Teases New Episode

    Preview:

    • The first clip from Marvel’s animated ‘What If…?’ Season 3 is online.
    • Sebastian Stan and David Harbour are among those lending their voices.
    • The series is reportedly returning sooner than we thought.

If you enjoyed the nine-day release schedule of ‘What If’s second season over this year’s festive period, you might find yourself wondering when the show will return for its third run.

But while a recent promotional event for the animated output from Marvel and Disney+ made mention of Season 3 in “early development”, on the basis of a new clip, the next run of episodes is much further along than we thought.

What’s the new clip for ‘What If…?’ Season 3?

The Winter Soldier and the Red Guardian in Marvel Studios' 'What If…?,' Season 2 exclusively on Disney+.
(L to R) The Winter Soldier and the Red Guardian in Marvel Studios’ ‘What If…?,’ Season 2 exclusively on Disney+. © 2023 Marvel.

While the clip doesn’t specify when we might see the new episodes, it does offer up footage from one of them –– no title details yet, but we do learn that it’ll feature Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes/The Winter Soldier driving incognito with the Alexei Ivanovich Shostakov/Red Guardian (David Harbour) trying to get past a police checkpoint that is being manned by Bill Foster, AKA Giant Man, (voiced by Laurence Fishburne) and a new character named Ranger Morales.

What exactly the bickering new duo is up to remains to be seen, but on the basis of this, it’ll fun finding out.

And Marvel is staying quiet about what else the new season will have to offer, though it’ll hopefully keep on expanding the MCU in interesting ways, with new characters and intriguing spins on existing heroes (and villains).

What else does Marvel have coming to Disney+?

While Marvel has a much-reduced movie slate this year thanks to strike delays (only ‘Deadpool 3’ is headed to theaters in 2024), its small screen output is still strong.

Echo’, spun off from 2021’s ‘Hawkeye’, will be landing on January 9th in one go, while ‘Agatha: Darkhold Diaries’ is reportedly showing up in the fall.

On the animated front, ‘What If…?’s third run will be joined by ‘X-Men ’97’ (a return for the cartoon adventures of Marvel’s favorite mutants) Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man (which is an MCU Spidey prequel series, though no word on whether Tom Holland will be voicing Peter Parker), and ‘Eyes of Wakanda’ (a show that follows Wakandan warriors as they scour the world rooting out stolen Vibranium).

There is also a ‘What If…?’ spin-off limited series focused on the dark, zombie-infested world glimpsed in episode 5 of the first season, but while that is expected this year, like the other series it doesn’t have a scheduled premiere date yet.

When will ‘What If…?’ Season 3 be on our TV screens?

As of right now, that’s still the question –– the new clip only says, “streaming soon”. So it could potentially arrive in the coming weeks.

Landing on Disney+ daily across the next nine days, the second season of Marvel’s Disney+ animated series ‘What If…?’ has plenty of treats to deliver, including a smart, clever festive episode that is the highlight of the early run.

At a time when Marvel and Disney are feeling the pinch of superhero fatigue (witness the box office collapse of ‘The Marvels’ and complaints about the sheer amount of movies and shows one must have seen to keep up with the storyline), the return of ‘What If…?’ is a pleasant one, by design untethered from the complicated continuity (albeit often rewarding fans of the various movies).

Does ‘What If…?’ Season 2 work to keep expanding the MCU?

Whether the implications of this season will tie directly into any future live-action stories is not really worth worrying at this point (and not something we could talk about anyway given the embargoes in place): ‘What If…?’s second run is more about enjoying the parallel universe take on some familiar stories.

Once more, the peek at different versions of characters and encounters works well as wish-fulfilment entertainment, including a chance for supporting characters to get the spotlight.

And Marvel/Disney+ are certainly experimenting with the release schedule for this one, dropping one episode a day across the festive season between December 22 and 30. The best example? Putting the ‘Die Hard’-spoofing ‘What If… Happy Hogan Saved Christmas?’ on Christmas Eve.

With direction and writing from Bryan Andrews, Stephan Franck (directors), AC Bradley, Matthew Chauncey and Ryan Little (writer/producers), ‘What If…?’s new run will feel familiar to those who watched the first season. It’s a similar mix of different looks at characters and situations.

Disney provided press with all the episodes, but there are strict embargoes in place. What can we tell you? There is some stylish, witty writing to be found here –– if you ever wanted to see Karen Gillan’s Nebula as a member of the Nova Corps investigating a situation on Xandar that comes across as a Clint Eastwood cop story meets a hard-bitten private eye future noir that has some serious ‘Blade Runner’ overtones, you’ve come to the right place.

Is every story a winner? They’re not all to the quality of, say, the Happy Hogan festive episode, but there is a high watermark for Marvel fun here. And the various little references and touches (a cuddly raccoon toy here, a nod to Hawkeye there) are welcome color rather than overloaded easter eggs.

The animation style of the show will still get mixed responses from those who believe it’s not up to the levels of big-screen output, but it works well for the stories and has seen a slight upgrade from the first season, which itself was a perfectly solid style.

Employing the same mix of original MCU voice actors (it’s fun to hear the likes of Jon Favreau, Kat Dennings, Karen Gillan, Chris Hemsworth, Michael Douglas and more lend their vocal skills to versions of their characters) and replacements for those who chose not to return (or were perhaps too pricey), the show keeps the feel of Marvel’s sprawling universe intact.

This will be something of a repeating motif in the review, but the Happy Hogan episode is certainly among the highlights, though there’s certainly something to be said for hearing Douglas, Annette Bening, Kurt Russell and Sebastian Stan playing earlier versions of their characters in a story that pits a powered Peter Quill (as a child, rather than the grown-up Chris Pratt we know) against a version of the Avengers that hews closer to the comics than movie screens.

The vocal replacements are once again a mixed bag –– that’s certainly not Glenn Close in the Nebula episode –– but the likes of Mick Wingert and Lake Bell once again prove to be reasonable stand-ins for Robert Downey Jr. and Scarlett Johansson without causing too much whiplash when their voices share the air with Mark Ruffalo and more.

‘What If…?’s second run is certainly worth checking out even if you are starting to feel the creep of superhero fatigue. It’s a fun, enjoyable dip into the MCU that doesn’t worry too much about the tapestry of everything weaving together –– it’s more a diverting dive into some fresh takes.

Comics fans will certainly appreciate the episodes that dive into versions of the characters more directly drawn from them as opposed to the adaptations (Douglas’ Hank Pym as Ant-Man, say), and of course the animated medium means that it can once more put on spectacles that even the healthily budgeted Marvel movies can only dream of.

Yet it doesn’t sacrifice character moments simply to blow stuff up or show off superpowers. While not every story works, there are enough winners (such as the big ‘Die Hard’ spoof) to make this a worthwhile watch.

What’s the story of ‘What If…?’ Season 2?

Season 2 continues the journey as The Watcher (Jeffrey Wright) guides viewers through the vast Multiverse, introducing brand-new and familiar faces from the MCU.

The series questions, revisits and twists classic Marvel Cinematic Universe moments with an incredible voice cast that includes a host of stars who reprise their iconic roles.

This new season features fan-favorite characters this season like Nebula, Hela and Happy Hogan.

Who is in ‘What If…?’ Season 2?

Alongside Wright, the cast also includes the usual blend of returning MCU actors and some voice replacements. The likes of Karen Gillan, Kat Dennings, Jon Favreau, Sam Rockwell, Michael Douglas, Annette Bening, Laurence Fishburne, Jeff Goldblum, Taika Waititi, Hayley Atwell and Elizabeth Olsen all play their characters.

The consequences of the studios and other big companies that make up the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) not negotiating in good faith with writers and actors are continuing to be felt.

We already learned that Disney and Marvel have been juggling their schedules for big screen output to accommodate films that are delayed due to the strikes (or completed projects for which they want talent to be available to promote).

Yet that is also having a knock-on effect on the various Disney+ series that the superhero-focused studio produces. Which is hardly surprising given the deep intersections between Marvel’s movie and TV output (and the fact that the shows are also seeing delays due to writer and actor availability).

Animated series ‘What If…?’, which explores variations on characters and stories, has a second season ready to go, but will now launch in December this year (an exact date has yet to be announced).

Hawkeye’ spin-off ‘Echo’, based around Alaqua Cox‘s deaf Native American character, is shifting from November to January, while ‘X-Men ‘97’, a revival of the 1990s animated show, will fly from this fall to early next year.

Perhaps the biggest move underway is for the series currently known as ‘Agatha: Darkhold Diaries’ (formerly ‘Agatha: House of Harkness’ and then ‘Agatha: Coven of Chaos’), now shifting to next fall, likely (probably a smart move) to arrive around Halloween 2024.

As for shows that were still in production (or post-production)? The likes of ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ and ‘Wonder Man‘ will have to wait to gear up shooting again, while ‘Ironheart’ (featuring Dominique Thorne’s Riri Williams, first introduced in ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’), is stuck in post-production limbo, and does not currently have a launch slot.

    Is ‘Loki’ Season 2 delayed?

Loki’s second season is still on track to launch on Disney+ on October 6th.

Marvel is no doubt figuring that the show –– which is still the most successful of the small screen MCU offerings –– will effectively sell itself. And it also doesn’t want to have the fall completely empty.

‘Loki’ picks up the story of the title character’s (Tom Hiddleston) journey around the multiverse, figuring out what is wrong with time and encountering variant versions of himself. Owen Wilson and Sophia Di Martino star in the series, with Ke Huy Quan a big guest star in this second season.

It’s not all bad news for those who produce TV series (and movies). Many independent productions have secured waivers to keep shooting or to promote their projects.

Perhaps the highest profile of recent examples is AMC, which is behind shows such as the mammoth ‘Walking Dead’ franchise and ‘Mayfair Witches’.

It might surprise you to learn that AMC Networks, whose AMC Studios produces most of its shows, is not an AMPTP member but is an “authorized” by the alliance, meaning AMC agrees to abide by any contracts between the AMPTP and industry unions such as the WGA or SAG-AFTRA.

The recent waiver from SAG-AFTRA (the union representing actors, which is currently on strike) means that three shows can continue work.

‘Walking Dead’ spin-off ‘The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon’ (surely self-explanatory for fans) can resume production while ‘The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live’ (which sees the return of Andrew Lincoln’s Rick Grimes and Danai Gurira’s Michonne to the franchise) finished shooting before the strike but can have the cast head to the studio for post-production work such as additional dialogue recording.

Anne Rice adaptation ‘Interview With the Vampire’ will return to shooting in Prague after shutting down when the actors’ strike started. No other AMC shows are currently included under the waiver.

Marvel Confirms Three New Disney+ Series, Including ‘She-Hulk’ and ‘Moon Knight’

    Marvel/Disney+

As if the slew of new Marvel shows coming to Disney+ weren’t already massive, the studio just confirmed three new series: “Ms. Marvel” (news of which leaked before the D23 panel), as well as  “She-Hulk” and “Moon Knight.”

No cast has been announced yet for these upcoming shows:

“She-Hulk” will follow Bruce Banner’s cousin, attorney Jennifer Walters, who gets a radioactive blood transfusion. She first appeared in 1980’s The Savage She-Hulk No. 1, and was the last major Marvel character co-created by Stan Lee.

“Moon Knight” is the vigilante alter ego of mercenary Marc Spector, who also has two other alter egos: millionaire Steven Grant and cab driver Jake Lockley. They may all be coming from Egyptian deity Konshu … or Konshu might also be a figment of Spector’s imagination. Got that?

“Ms. Marvel”: This version of Captain Marvel is a teenager named Kamela Khan, Marvel’s first Muslim character to lead her own comics title. She’s a Pakistani-American who has the ability to stretch and change her shape. The show is in development with British writer Bisha K. Ali to write and act as showrunner.

We’re also getting alternate reality animated series “What If…?” in 2021. “Westworld” star Jeffrey Wright will voice the all-seeing Watcher, who will be “your guide through these vast new realities.”

Kevin Feige showed scenes of alternate MCU plots, including  Zombie Captain America and Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) taking up Captain America’s mantle and becoming Captain Carter.

All these series will be intertwined with Marvel’s theatrical films, meaning they expect you to watch “Falcon & Winter Soldier,” “WandaVision,” “Loki,” “What If…?”,” Hawkeye” and all the MCU movies.

New ‘What/If’ Trailer Pops Indecent Proposal From Renée Zellweger

    Netflix

“Nothing worthwhile is ever achieved without sacrifice,” Renée Zellweger notes in the first full-length trailer for “What/If,” Netflix’s “neo-noir social thriller.”

As the trailer lays out, the question of sacrifice is put to Jane Levy’s character, a woman who owns a start-up that Zellweger’s eccentric tech investor is willing to fund. But there’s a catch: She wants to spend a night with Levy’s husband, played by Blake Jenner. Will Levy sacrifice marital happiness to get her company off the ground?

The choice triggers a feud between the two women that seems to spiral into dark territory. Levy expresses deep regret at ever meeting Zellweger, while Jenner asks the latter, “How many more people need to be hurt before you get what you want?”

Created by “Revenge’s” Mike Kelley, the 10-episode first season explores the ripple effects of what happens when acceptable people start doing unacceptable things.

“What/If” premieres May 24 on Netflix.

    Netflix

“What if I made you an offer too extraordinary to refuse?” Renée Zellweger asks in the first teaser for Netflix’s neo-noir social thriller “What/If.”

Netflix also announced the show’s premiere date: Friday, May 24. Created by “Revenge’s” Mike Kelley, the 10-episode first season explores the ripple effects of what happens when acceptable people start doing unacceptable things.

Zellweger — in her first TV role since guest-starring on “King of the Hill” in 2001 — plays a mysterious woman who makes a lucrative offer to a cash-strapped San Francisco newlywed couple. How very “Indecent Proposal.”

“Welcome to the game,” she purrs in the teaser, while dropping a chess piece.

The ensemble cast includes Jane Levy, Blake Jenner, Dave Annable, Samantha Ware, Keith Powers, and Daniella Pineda.

The series is intended to be an anthology, with each season tackling a different morality tale inspired by culturally consequential source material.

  • Renée Zellweger Heading to Netflix to Lead New Social Thriller Series ‘What/If’

Renée Zellweger Heading to Netflix to Lead New Social Thriller Series ‘What/If’

    Bridget Jones's Baby
    Universal Pictures

Welcome to series television — and the world of streaming — Renée Zellweger!

We haven’t seen too much of the Oscar winner in the past few years, except for “Bridget Jones’s Baby” in 2016 and “Same Kind of Different as Me” in 2017. She has some film projects lined up, but now she also has this new Netflix series “What/If.”

According to Netflix, “What/If” is a “social thriller” series that will explore the ripple effects of what happens when acceptable people start doing unacceptable things. Each season is meant to tackle a different morality tale inspired by culturally consequential source material, and the power of a single fateful decision to change the trajectory of an entire life.

Zellweger has a one-year series regular deal for “What/If.” This will be her first major TV role. She plays a character named Anne; Deadline shared more details:

“I hear the 10-episode first season focuses on two struggling newlyweds who accept a powerful woman’s (Zellweger) ethically perilous proposition to secure a badly needed financial windfall.

Zellweger’s Anne is a shrewd and mercurial San Francisco venture capitalist. She is magnetically charismatic, seductive, charming, even vulnerable when it serves her purpose. But she’s also a virtuoso of deception with a cauldron of destructive secrets, including a deeply buried metaphorical deal with the devil that set the course for her life back when she was still just a girl herself.”

Interesting. So it sounds like this will be another anthology (like so many other shows these days, which is fine) focusing on new characters and stories each season.

“What/If” comes from “Revenge” creator Mike Kelley. The rest of the executive team is pretty impressive, too. Executive Producers: Mike Kelley, Melissa Loy (Page Fright); Alex Gartner, Charles Roven (Atlas Entertainment); Robert Zemeckis, Jack Rapke (Compari Entertainment).

In addition to this series, we can also look forward to seeing Zellweger as Judy Garland in the musical biodrama “Judy,” which will arrive in theaters either in late 2018 or sometime in 2019.
