Remaking what is regarded as one of Akira Kurosawa’s best, bleakest, and most cynical films is a big swing, and Spike Lee boldly puts his own imprint on Kurosawa’s 1963 gem ‘High and Low.’ He updates it to the modern era and New York City, makes some changes to the story while keeping the central premise and dilemma more or less intact, and includes his usual grab-bag of distinctive trademarks – both for better and worse.

In the end, the biggest attraction is watching Lee once again collaborate with Denzel Washington for the fifth time and first since 2006’s ‘Inside Man.’ The latter delivers for his director in towering fashion, making this version of the story perhaps more of an epic character study than police drama. It remains compelling material, thanks in particular to Washington and Jeffrey Wright, even if Lee meanders off course with distracting asides, some uninspired staging, and one of the most overbearing and ill-fitting scores of the year.

    Story and Direction

The plot of ‘Highest 2 Lowest’ follows that of ‘High and Low’ in the broad strokes. Washington plays legendary music mogul David King, who’s on the verge of selling his famous independent label, Stackin’ Hits Records, to a larger corporate concern (the protagonist owns a shoe company in the original). King’s peak years, when he made the cover of magazines regularly, are behind him, but he’s still worried that the sale will stamp out the label’s identity and “drain Black culture.” So he instead lays down his own personal assets – his savings, his stocks, and his properties, including his family’s luxury high-rise apartment in a riverfront Dumbo skyscraper – to buy Stackin’ Hits on his own, with the reluctant approval of his wife Pam (Ilfenesh Hadera) and business partner Patrick (Michael Potts).

The deal is about to go through when calamity strikes. David gets a call from a kidnapper (A$AP Rocky) who says he’s seized David and Pam’s teenage son Trey (Aubrey Joseph) and wants $17.5 million in Swiss francs in exchange for his life. David is ready to pivot from his deal and lay out all his money for his son’s safe return. But then it becomes apparent that Trey is okay and the kidnapper has mistakenly taken a boy named Kyle (Elijah Wright) – the son of David’s lifelong friend and driver, Paul (Jeffrey Wright).

Therein lies the moral dilemma at the heart of both film versions of this tale, as well as ‘King’s Ransom,’ the Ed McBain novel on which both are based. When it’s David’s son’s life on the line, he’s ready to pay up at a moment’s notice. But when it’s someone else’s child – even that of one of his closest friends – all of a sudden the loss of all that money that David was going to use to buy back Stackin’ Hits looms much larger in his mind. What makes ‘Highest 2 Lowest’ different from ‘High and Low’ is that this dilemma is resolved rather quickly – after a bit of soul-searching by David and some silent suffering from Paul, who seems to always be in the corner of David’s eye – and the moral aftermath is left more or less behind as ‘Highest 2 Lowest’ turns into a story of a once-powerful, gifted man who learns how to get his mojo back.

That a lot of it works is a tribute to both Washington’s train-like forward motion and Lee’s increasingly energetic direction. The opening scenes of the film are weirdly static, not in an elegant fashion like the work of Kurosawa himself, but in a perfunctory, ‘just stick the camera here’ way. But Lee seems to find his rhythm as he goes along, and no one can shoot New York City quite like him (with the help of ace cinematographer Matthew Libatique). Speaking of trains, there is a suspenseful scene on an elevated car that homages the original movie but is undercut by cross-cutting to both an admittedly lovely Puerto Rican parade (and a few distracting cameos) plus throngs of Yankees fans filling up the train on the way to the stadium. These are things that Lee loves about his city but they prove a little jarring here. A later, climactic fight scene, also staged atop an elevated line, is much more successful.

Along the way, Lee touches on changes in the music industry, the content of music itself, whether fame on social media is a good thing or not (“attention is the biggest form of currency,” David says to his son), and the tensions inherent between the elite and working classes. It’s a lot, it doesn’t always cohere well, and it’s not helped by one of the most intrusive scores we’ve heard in some time. Howard Drossin’s loud orchestral cues continually threaten to swamp the movie, incessantly braying in the background to irritating effect.

    Cast and Performances

Denzel Washington is in powerhouse form here, exuding a looseness and spontaneity that also charged his performance in 2024’s ‘Gladiator II.’ He embodies David King almost perfectly from start to finish, from the man’s narcissism to his empathy to his pride. In the end, King is a decent man of multitudes and action, even if he sometimes acts on impulses that can get him in trouble, making the moments when he shows uncertainty or selfishness all the more striking. Washington handles the character’s transformative arc with the skill and dexterity that only one of our greatest living actors could provide.

Equally sensational is Jeffrey Wright as Paul, another three-dimensional character whose pain over the fact that his child’s life is in the hands of the man who has been his benefactor up to this point is evident in his face and body. Paul and David are lifelong friends but separated in many ways by experience and fortune, and the former’s fear and anger are made palpable through Wright’s excellent portrayal. The two leads’ scenes together are among the best in the film.

The rest of the cast is a bit of a mixed bag. Ilfenesh Hadera is poised, warm, and elegant as Pam King, but the sense of her position and power in the family structure and as David’s trusted adviser is only intermittent. A$AP Rocky, meanwhile, makes a sharp impression as Yung Felon, the rapper-turned-kidnapper whose own life story is inextricably linked to David’s in ways that the latter only belatedly realizes. John Douglas Thompson, Michael Potts, and Wendell Pierce all bring regality and gravitas to their relatively minor roles, while Aubrey Joseph and Elijah Wright – as the two teen boys at the center of the story – are raw and real if somewhat unpolished.

While it’s a “remake” in the loosest sense of the word, any movie that finds Denzel Washington in a rhyme battle with A$AP Rocky with his life possibly on the line can’t be described as anything but original. But this also isn’t Spike Lee at either his sharpest or tightest (more recent examples of that would be ‘Da 5 Bloods’ and ‘BlacKkKlansman’), and the fact that the movie ends with not one but two musical numbers (each representing a direction that David could take with his career, toward easy commercialism or something more soulful) is a hint that Lee’s cinematic instincts are not always what they once were.

Still, those performances and Lee’s vaunted, improvisatory aesthetic keeps the movie crackling even when it threatens to collapse within itself. And the ideas contained within are thoughtful, important ones. Despite its name, the movie never hits either the highs or lows of the rest of Lee’s filmography – but with due respect to Kurosawa, it’s all Spike Lee.

    • Fans are worried that James Gunn’s ‘Superman’ has too many characters in it.
    • James Gunn is known for large ensemble casts and knows how to write for them.
    • No one has ever complained about the numerous characters in ‘The Godfather’.

Every time a new trailer or TV spot for ‘Superman‘ is released, the internet is abuzz with people saying that there are too many characters. The concerns are that if there are too many characters, the story would be difficult to follow, there would be too many side plots to give the core story the time it needs, and the film would end up too oversaturated.

    OT00arSyAacXCGscjvNND4

The thing is, James Gunn is well known for his large ensemble casts. This is his wheelhouse, so there is no reason to be worried. He thrilled Marvel fans with the ‘Guardians of the Galaxy‘ trilogy, and his ‘The Suicide Squad‘ success surely had something to do with DC Studios handing him the reins as co-CEO.

On top of that, this feels like just another reason for people to complain about something they aren’t even that passionate about, as no one has ever said the same about ‘The Godfather‘, which has just as many characters.

The Prominent Characters In ‘Superman’ All Make Sense For The Story We Assume Is Being Told

One of the biggest thing that fans need to remember about ‘Superman’ is that this is technically the introduction into James Gunn’s DCU, as it is the first feature film. Yes, ‘Peacemaker‘ is (mostly) cannon and ‘Creature Commandos‘ is included yet animated, but this is the real start of Gunn’s plans. Because of this, it is necessary to establish the world that these heroes live in. Superman is not the only hero, and opting not to include any others would only hurt the believability of the story.

How many times have people asked where the Eternals or Namor were during the events of ‘Avengers: Infinity War‘ and ‘Avengers: Endgame‘ and why they never came to help? Even if Marvel tries to offer a reason, most viewers do not accept it. James Gunn is avoiding this response to ‘Superman’ by showing where the main characters of the DCU are during these events and establishing that they do exist in this world.

David Corenswet stars as Clark Kent / Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luther, can you imagine a story that only involves the three of them? Not only would it likely get very boring, very quickly, it risks being repetative and too closed off.

Adding in nurmerous characters (that are likely to not be a major part of the plot, mind you) such as Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mr. Terrific, Beck Bennett as Steve Lombard,  Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, and Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr will bring in subplots and round out the universe, making it more realistic while simultaneously setting up for what is to come in future films and television projects.

If Anyone Can Handle An Ensemble Cast, It Is James Gunn

It is hard not to laugh at the idea that ‘Superman’ has too many characters when you look at who is behind it all. James Gunn is writing and directing, and if anyone knows his way around an ensemble cast, it is that man. He is a genuis when it comes to plucking characters out of obscurity and telling an emotional, exciting, and action-packed story around them.

While Superman, Lois Lane, and Lex Luther are undoubtedly household names, several other characters in ‘Superman’ are not. Those who do not read DC Comics and don’t immerse themselves in these worlds, probably have never heard of Mister Terrific or Steve Lombard. James Gunn excels at bringing these types of characters to life.

If you look at character list for ‘The Suicide Squad’, it has just as many, if not more, than ‘Superman’ does. There were two complete rosters in that movie and fans still soaked it all in and loved nearly every moment of it. James Gunn is brilliant when it comes to giving every character, big or small, their time to shine and justifying their reason to exist in that universe. There is no reason to believe he will not do the same with ‘Superman’.

No One Has Ever Said ‘The Godfather’ Has Too Many Characters

(L to R) James Caan, Marlon Brando, Al Pacino and John Cazale in ‘The Godfather’. Photo: Paramount Pictures.

The final point to make in this arguement is that no one has ever said ‘The Godfather’ had too many characters – and there are at least fifteen prominent characters in that movie. They do not all need a backstory for it to make sense that they exist in the world. Viewers don’t complain that the plot gets lost because there are so many of them, and ‘The Godfather’ certainly is not considered a bad movie (not even remotely).

This is just one example of a beloved film having multiple characters, each with a job to do to drive the plot forward even if you don’t know about their upbringing or their deep dark secrets. A movie can have one hundred main characters and still be good if the writing and the story being told is good.

James Gunn himself pointed out that ‘Oppenheimer‘ has three times as many speaking roles as ‘Superman’ does and promises that the film will not confuse anyone in an interview with IGN. Plus, ‘Superman’ isn’t even out yet, so can we please normalize saving the criticism of a movie until after you watch it?

    • Amazon MGM Studios is developing a movie based on Prime Video’s ‘Jack Ryan’ series.
    • Star John Krasinski is returning to lead and produce.
    • Co-star Wendell Pierce is already attached to appear.

The Tom Clancy character of Jack Ryan used to be firmly a cinematic spectacle. Between Alec Baldwin’s portrayal in ‘The Hunt for Red October,’ Harrison Ford’s two films (which became the Ryan movie fans most closely associate with the CIA analyst), Ben Affleck in ‘The Sum of All Fears’ and Chris Pine in ‘Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit,’ we got used to him running around the big screen.

John Krasinski and Prime Video changed all that with TV series ‘Jack Ryan,’ which aired four seasons between 2018 and 2023. It offered the chance for longer, more nuanced adventures for Ryan (well, as nuanced as a show based on a Tom Clancy character truly gets) and was a big success.

    al0OvheO9oZBI0lckRMUA3

Amazon MGM Studios is looking to keep that going but is switching tracks to send Ryan back to movie form (likely so that Krasinski can keep playing him but doesn’t have to commit to another season).

What’s the story of the ‘Jack Ryan’ movie?

There are zero details on what Ryan might be up to in the movie, though it’s a fair guess that it’ll involve some big, probably terrorist or rogue state-sponsored threat that Ryan has to A) figure out and B) take down.

Given that Amazon also owns the rights to the Ryan-adjacent John Clark character (as portrayed by Michael B. Jordan in ‘Without Remorse’, and aboard to return for ‘Rainbow Six,’ might we get a fan-pleasing crossover, if only for one scene?

With Krasinski starring and producing, we’ll also see the return of Wendell Pierce, who plays James Greer, Ryan’s superior in the series.

And Michael Kelly, who had a sizeable roles as Mike November, is in talks.

Behind the scenes, Andrew Bernstein, who served as an executive producer and director on Season 2 of the series, is directing the film from a script by Aaron Rabin, who served as a co-executive producer and writer on Season 4.

Still, with Krasinski in the lead, the studio may well decide to leverage his film star status to turn this into more of an event.

Once titled ‘Superman: Legacy’, the now simply-calledSuperman’ represents his vision for the crown jewel character of the DC world. So of course, that has led to some new casting decisions.

David Corenswet is playing the title character (as well as his alter ego, reporter Clark Kent), with Rachel Brosnahan as colleague and love interest Lois Lane.

Little is truly known about the plotline at this point, but Gunn has been clear that he’s eschewing the usual exploding home planet Krypton/arrival in Smallville origin story (though those will likely be referenced) in favor of more of a workplace film with Clark showing up to work at the Planet, where Lois will already be an established reporting star.

White first appeared as a character in the 1940s radio serials based on Joe Shuster and Jerry Siegel’s comics and has been a fixture in Superman-related stories ever since.

On movie screens, he has previously been played by Jackie Cooper (in the Christopher Reevesstarring films), Frank Langella (in Bryan Singer’s ‘Superman Returns’) and Laurence Fishburne (in Zack Snyder’s ‘Man of Steel’ and other DC titles).

Every director or other creator has their own take on the character, so it’ll be interesting to see where Gunn takes him.

  • ‘Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan’ Season 4 – Michael Peña and Louis Ozawa

    VGMl2jUN

Premiering on Prime Video beginning June 30th is the fourth and final season of ‘Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan,’ which is based on the popular literary and cinematic character and stars John Krasinski (‘A Quiet Place’) in the title role.

What is the plot of ‘Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan’ Season 4?

The fourth and final season of ‘Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan’ finds the titular character on his most dangerous mission yet: facing an enemy both foreign and domestic. As the new CIA Acting Deputy Director, Jack Ryan (John Krasinski) is tasked with unearthing internal corruption, and in doing so, uncovers a series of suspicious black ops that could expose the vulnerability of the country. As Jack and the team investigate how deep the corruption runs, he discovers a far-worse reality—the convergence of a drug cartel with a terrorist organization—ultimately revealing a conspiracy much closer to home and testing our hero’s belief in the system he has always fought to protect.

Who is in the cast of ‘Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan’ Season 4?

‘Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan’ season 4 stars John Krasinski (‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’) as Jack Ryan, Wendell Pierce (‘Selma’) as James Greer, Michael Kelly (‘Man of Steel’) as Mike November, and Betty Gabriel (‘The Purge: Election Year’) as CIA Acting Director Elizabeth Wright, with Abbie Cornish (‘Sucker Punch’) returning as Cathy Mueller. Joining the cast this season are Michael Peña (‘Ant-Man’) as Domingo Chavez and Louis Ozawa (‘Predators’) as Chao Fah.

Moviefone recently had the pleasure of speaking with Michael Peña and Louis Ozawa about their work on ‘Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan’ Season 4, how Peña’s character is different than Jack Ryan, why Ozawa’s character is torn between business and family, and working opposite actor and filmmaker John Krasinski.

Moviefone: To begin with, Michael, what were some of the aspects of this character that you were excited to explore on screen? Also, how is Domingo Chavez similar and different from Jack Ryan?

Michael Peña: I mean, I got to be honest with you, there’s not a lot of similarities. He’s like this cerebral kind of a person and he figures things out. I think Chavez is more of a fill-player. He fills out the situations and I think that he has a lot more experience, especially in battle, so to speak. For me, the interesting part of it, which was difficult as well, he’s not a character that emotes very much, and it’s more about the amount of focus that he has on the task at hand. So he’s that kind of guy. For the most part, what you see in the series is somebody who’s very motivated, but very focused on one thing, and he’s not very animated.

MF: Louis, your character, Chao, is a family man but also a ruthless businessman, and he seems torn between the two. Can you talk about that?

Louis Ozawa: Absolutely. Family comes first with him. But he’s a self-made man and he’s not a unambitious man. I think ultimately his hubris, his ambition, is a bit of his downfall, too. So it’s a delicious combination to kind of play off of. He’s got his ambitions and that that’s at odds with his family. I think he’s similar to Jack Ryan in a sense that he’s always thinking two, three, four steps ahead of everyone. He thinks he’s the smartest guy in the room, and maybe he’s not. It’s been a joy to play this role. I was saying earlier that I get to scratch every itch that an actor has, in this role.

MF: Michael, what was it like for you working with John Krasinski on this series?

MP: I mean, he had a lot of input on the writing and the directing, and of course the producing of it all. Sometimes it’s interesting because when you’re doing something with a person that’s producing whatever it is that you’re doing, you see them and they’re looking at you. You’re like, “Is he acting with me or is he looking at how I’m doing it?” So it can make you a little bit self-conscious about it. Because he’s like, “Right, right. Can you do that again?” So, it’s literally the director just right there.

MF: Finally, Louis, what was your experience like working with John Krasinski?

LO: Well, John is fairly hands-on being a director, so, as the executive producer, has a lot of creative input into every scene that we’re in. But he’s also an actor. So, one of my most emotional scenes that I had, he gave me the space. He said, “Hey, we need to give Louis a few minutes to be there. Whatever you need in this moment, if you need to call your wife and talk to her.” He was recollecting kind of moments from ‘A Quiet Place’ and how he got into that place. He was like, “I just got on the phone with my wife,” which is weird because she was on set. But anyway, he was like, “Yeah, you can get on the phone with your kids, whatever it takes.” So I appreciate both the fact that he is a director and an actor.

  • Final Trailer for ‘Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan’ Season 3

Jack Ryan just can’t cut a break. But then, if his life were an easy round of sitting at home with his slippers on drinking hot cocoa, we’re not sure whether anyone outside of John Krasinski’s most committed fan base would watch that.

For season 3 of Prime Video’s thriller series, Krasinski is back playing the character from the Tom Clancy novels previously brought––to movie theaters––by Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford, Ben Affleck and Chris Pine. Ryan, a former Marine injured in the line of duty, becomes a stockbroker before joining the CIA as an analyst and seeing more action than many of his desk-bound colleagues.

The series also stars Wendell Pierce and Abbie Cornish, who play his boss James Greer and girlfriend Cathy Mueller, respectively. Krasinski signed on for four seasons when he originally took the job, and in the later seasons has been involved in writing and show running.

Season 3 will feature new arrivals Nina Hoss as Czech President Alena Kovac and Betty Gabriel as CIA Rome Station Chief Elizabeth Wright.

For this latest season Ryan is working as a CIA case officer in Rome, when he is tipped off that the Sokol Project, a secret plan to restore the Soviet Empire, is being resurrected more than 50 years after it was thought to have been shut down.

Jack embarks on a mission to confirm the intelligence, but things quickly go awry, and he is wrongly implicated in a larger conspiracy. Accused of treason, with a Red Notice out for his arrest, Jack is forced to run from his own government, if he has any hope of uncovering the rogue faction before it’s too late.

Crisscrossing Europe as he is hunted by former allies and new enemies alike, Jack races against the clock to stop the cascade of destabilizing conflicts from leading to global catastrophe…

And even though the plan is to end the show with a fourth season that is arriving most likely in 2023, there is hope for ‘Ryan’ fans as plans are afoot to keep the stories going via a spin-off.

The new show, following the adventures of Domingo “Ding” Chavez, another major character in the ‘Ryan’ stories, is in very early development, to star Michael Peña.

He likely be headlining that if the show makes it to series – the ‘Ryan’ team will introduce the character in the final episode of Season 3, with Peña then becoming a series regular for the fourth season.

Whether this truly proves to be the final trailer or if the streaming service squeezes in another before the premiere, ‘Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan’ will hit Prime Video on December 21st with its eight-episode third season.

Though we do know that Prime Video has decided to wrap up its ‘Jack Ryan’ series with the fourth season, it’s far from the end for the Tom Clancy adaptation.

Season 3 is on its way in a couple of months and promises to be full of the action that fans have come to expect.

To give it its fill title, ‘Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan’ has John Krasinski playing the character from the Tom Clancy novels previously brought – to movie theaters – by Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford, Ben Affleck, and Chris Pine. Ryan, a former Marine injured in the line of duty, becomes a stockbroker before joining the CIA as an analyst and seeing more action than many of his desk-bound colleagues.

So, you know, a pretty normal day at the “office” for poor old Jack. And no, we’re not making that joke because of Krasinski’s previous famous TV job.

  • ‘Jack Ryan’ Ending With Season 4

It appears that the countdown clock is about to run out for John Krasinski’s TV take on Jack Ryan.

According to Deadline’s sources, the Prime Video action series will wrap up with Season 4, which is now shooting.

‘Jack Ryan’ has Krasinski playing the character from the Tom Clancy novels previously brought – to movie theaters – by Alec Baldwin, Harrison FordBen Affleck, and Chris Pine).

Krasinski signed on for four seasons when he originally took the job, and in the later seasons has been involved in writing and show-running.

But fear not, Ryan fans: if you’re already starting to dread the end, be assured that there is still Season 3 headed our way this year and Season 4 likely to hit in 2023. Plenty more action left to enjoy.

And it appears that Prime Video is not ready to completely close the ‘Ryanverse’ just yet. A spin-off series, following the adventures of Domingo “Ding” Chavez, another major character in the ‘Ryan’ stories, is in very early development.

John Krasinski as Dr. Jack Ryan and Wendell Pierce as James Greer

Michael Peña will likely be headlining that if the show makes it to series – Prime Video plans to introduce the character in the final episode of Season 3, with Peña then becoming a series regular for the fourth season.

Chavez, who joined the CIA straight from the United States Army, has gone on missions in countries like Colombia, Iran as well as the United Kingdom where he acted as the executive officer of Rainbow Six. The character has appeared in 22 novels from the larger Jack Ryan Universe. He was played by Raymond Cruz in ‘Clear and Present Danger’.

An end to ‘Ryan’ doesn’t feel like a huge surprise. Though Krasinski has been able to fit in shooting the show around his big screen schedule, that is set to get even busier soon as he juggles various projects, including ‘IF’, which sees him writing, producing, directing and appearing.

The fantasy comedy has Ryan Reynolds and Krasinski’s old ‘The Office’ boss Steve Carell starring in the story of a man (Reynolds) who can see and communicate with other peoples’ imaginary friends, who, it turns out, are not so imaginary. He befriends those who have been forgotten or discarded, but some become irretrievably evil, and he must find a way to stop them.

There is also Krasinski’s ongoing duties on the ‘A Quiet Place’ franchise – he’s overseeing at least one spin-off (‘A Quiet Place: Day One’ has ‘Pig’ director Michael Sarnoski in charge) and potentially returning for a third outing as writer/director.

And that’s not forgetting his other big screen job, which may or may not still happen (and that’s all we’ll say about that – don’t want to stretch our luck).

Mostly known for her work in front of the camera, Amy Poehler stepped behind the camera in 2019 to direct the ensemble comedy ‘Wine Country.” When asked what advice she’d give to other women who may be hesitating to start directing she said, “Do it even if you don’t think you’re ready… a lot of women wait until they think they’re really really ready for something. And I’ve worked with a lot of guys who aren’t ready for what they’re doing.” In the early 1990s, Poehler studied acting and improv at Chicago’s Second City and ImprovOlympic before co-founding the improvisational-comedy troupe Upright Citizens Brigade and cutting her teeth as a writer and performer on Saturday Night Live. Along with her extensive writing and acting credits, she has also served as an executive producer for many female-led shows including Difficult People, Russian Doll, Broad City, and Parks and Recreation. Her latest directorial effort ‘Moxie’ debuted on Netflix this week. Up next, Poehler is in the midst of filming a documentary about the romantic and creative partnership of comedy legends Lucille Ball & Desi Arnaz.

For her second feature film as a director, Poehler has moved into the young adult genre with an adaptation of the novel Moxie by Jennifer Mathieu. The result is a poignant coming-of-age dramedy starring Hadley Robinson as Vivian, a shy teenage girl who finds inspiration in her mother’s rebellious teenage past. Poehler plays her mother, Lisa, who in the early 90s was active in the Riot Grrrl subculture. Vivian and best friend Claudia (Lauren Tsai) are happy to just keep their heads down and coast through her senior year of high school until new girl Lisa (Alycia Pascual-Peña) opens their eyes to their complacency in the victimization of other girls. When Vivian finds her mother’s old feminist zines, she decides to strike back against the rampant sexist culture at her high school. The zine – titled Moxie – criticizes the casual misogyny of the boys at her school and even ousts a sexual predator in the making. Vivian and Claudia’s relationship is strained as Vivian moves further out of her shell, and even tests the waters of dating, but ultimately the girls find strength in each other and learn the might of a united voice. Get your sharpie out, draw some hearts and stars on your hands, power up Netflix, and you might just learn a thing or two about grrrl power.

Night Catches Us (2010) – written and directed by Tanya Hamilton

(L to R) 'Night Catches Us' stars Anthony Mackie & Kerry Washington and director Tanya Hamilton
(L to R) ‘Night Catches Us’ stars Anthony Mackie & Kerry Washington and director Tanya Hamilton

Born and raised in Jamaica, Tanya Hamilton came to the United States to study filmmaking at Cooper Union and Columbia University. Her short film ‘The Killers’ won an award at the 1996 Berlin International Film Festival, and she then spent the next decade developing her feature film debut ‘Night Catches Us.’ That period drama about Black Panthers debuted at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival and was nominated for Best First Feature that same year at the Independent Spirit Awards. In the decade since the film’s release, she has directed quite a television episodes, including ‘Queen Sugar,’ ‘Black Lighting,’ ‘The Deuce,’ and ‘The Chi.’ Hamilton’s work is rooted where the personal and political collide. As she told the Washington Post, “I am interested in making films that have social and political relevance.”

‘Night Catches Us’ was written over a ten-year period and was inspired by the story of Carol Lawson-Green, a close friend of Hamilton’s mother. In 1965, Lawson-Green took part in a student-organized protest at the White House to address the treatment of Black people in Selma, Alabama. Her involvement in the protest led to a six-month jail sentence for a crime normally punished by a simple fine. Hamilton became interested in exploring the interpersonal dynamics of the protest movements during this era and the inequality of the justice system. Set in Philadelphia in 1976, ‘Night Catches Us’ follows former Black Panther Marcus (Anthony Mackie), returning home for the first time since his incarceration. He reconnects with Patricia (Kerry Washington), whose husband’s death he may or may not have caused. Sparks fly immediately, and it’s clear there’s something more to their story, as Patricia’s daughter Iris (Jamara Griffin) slowly learns. The film is buoyed by strong performances from Mackie and Washington (whose chemistry is hot, hot, hot) as well as an unsettling supporting turn from Wendell Pierce as a crooked cop. Shot on location and featuring a soul-stirring score by Philadelphia natives The Roots, ‘Night Catches Us’ finds the universal in the situation, while feeling distinctly of a certain time and place. Hamilton’s film doesn’t offer easy answers or a happy ending, a bit like life itself. ‘Night Catches Us’ is available on Amazon Prime.
