‘Aquaman’ Producer Says ‘Extraordinary’ Movie Puts DCEU ‘On the Right Path’
It will be a while before fans get to see upcoming DC standalone flick “Aquaman,” but according to the team behind the film, it will be more than worth the wait.In a series of interviews with Entertainment Weekly, producers and Warner Bros. executives touted the Jason Momoa flick, and director James Wan‘s vision in particular. Warner Bros. chief Toby Emmerich praised the “incredible job” that Wan and his team have done on the film, which is “imagining the underwater world in a way you haven’t seen before.”
The labor-intensive effects that went into the flick have been duly noted (and are at least partially responsible for all of the delays that have plagued the project). But it’s the film’s eclectic tone that will really set it apart from other DC Extended Universe offerings, producer Peter Safran told EW.
“[The film has] the great action you expect, it’s got a lot of great humor, it works on so many levels … it’s a testament to James’ unique vision,” Safran explained. “I think it’s an extraordinary step in [the] DC Universe that sets it on the right path.”
That should certainly be music to DC fans’ ears — and have them eager to open their wallets. “Aquaman” is due in theaters on December 21.

James Van Der Beek Shares ‘Dawson’s Creek’ Throwback in Honor of 20th Anniversary
Twenty years ago, the world was introduced to Dawson, Joey, Pacey, and Jen, and all the drama they collectively created on WB series “Dawson’s Creek,” which premiered on January 20, 1998. In honor of that momentous milestone, titular star James Van Der Beek did some reflecting on the show and its impact all these years later, sharing a sweet throwback photo of the fresh-faced cast.In a #TBT post on Instagram this week, Van Der Beek waxed nostalgic about his “squad” — comprised of himself, Katie Holmes, Joshua Jackson, and Michelle Williams — who were suddenly thrust into a very hot spotlight after “Dawson’s” became a television sensation.
“20 years ago this week … the little pilot we shot in that small town for that fledgling network aired, changed our lives and launched our careers,” Van Der Beek wrote.
The actor thanked the cast, crew, writers, producers, and residents of Wilmington, North Carolina (where the series was shot) for sharing in the experience, and also gave a special shout-out to the show’s fans, for their support then and now.
“[T]hank you to anyone who’s ever expressed appreciation for the work we did – it makes me feel proud to be associated with these three fine people (and the rest of the cast), and proud to have been a part of #DawsonsCreek,” Van Der Beek wrote. “This one will always have a special little place in my heart.”
Ours, too, Dawson. Now excuse us while we blast the show’s earworm theme song on repeat for the rest of the day.

‘Suicide Squad’ Undergoing Reshoots to Make It Funnier: Report
After the deadly serious action on display in “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” can fans expect more of the same from this summer’s “Suicide Squad“? Apparently not, as the film is reportedly undergoing reshoots to add more humor.Birth.Movies.Death. reports that the flick is currently in the midst of some extensive reshoots (to the tune of “tens of millions of dollars”), injecting more jokes into the proceedings in response to reaction to the movie’s trailer, which prominently featured Queen tune “Bohemian Rhapsody.” According to the site’s sources, “Every joke in the movie is in that trailer,” and “The enormous positive response to the trailer led to Warner Bros requesting reshoots that would alter the tone of the film, bringing in some more of the lightness to which audiences responded.”
That’s in sharp contrast to “BvS,” which rocked the box office despite critics complaining that the film was no fun. Studio Warner Bros. is apparently aware of that issue, and wants to course correct a bit for “Squad,” per B.M.D., with the site writing that filmmakers aren’t “inserting jokes left and right,” but instead simply “beefing up fun character moments and interactions” to play to the audience’s tastes.
Considering that the quirky “Squad” seems more in line with the similarly-humorous “Deadpool” than “BvS,” it makes sense for the flick to adopt the former’s tone. (And “Deadpool”‘s huge box office is probably an incentive, too.) Birth.Movies.Death. also reports that WB is taking a more hands-on approach with the upcoming “Justice League: flick, too, so fans can probably expect that film to be a bit more lighthearted than “BvS” as well.
The new-and-improved “Suicide Squad” hits theaters on August 5.
