  • Clint Eastwood to Direct Biopic of Capt. Sully Sullenberger

4th Annual Sun Valley Film Festival - Vision Awards Dinner With Clint EastwoodFresh off his take on the life of Chris Kyle in “American Sniper,” director Clint Eastwood will tackle another high-profile American.

The Hollywood Reporter writes that Eastwood will follow up his Oscar-nominated film with a biopic centered around Capt. Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger. In January 2009, Sullenberger piloted U.S. Airways Flight 1549, which experienced engine failure shortly after takeoff from New York City’s LaGuardia Aiport. Sullenberger was able to land the plane safely in the waters of the Hudson River, and his quick thinking — and avoidance of any injury to plane’s 155 passengers — landed him international fame and the admiration.

Sullenberger parlayed that limelight into a book deal, and in 2010 released “Highest Duty: My Search for What Really Matters,” which he co-authored with the late Jeffrey Zaslow. “Highest Duty” serves as the inspiration for Eastwood’s as-yet-untitled biopic, with screenwriter Todd Komarnicki penning the script.

“I am very glad my story is in the hands of gifted storyteller and filmmaker Clint Eastwood, and veteran producers Allyn Stewart and Frank Marshall. The project could not have found a better home than Warner Bros. Pictures. This is truly a dream team,” said Sullenberger in a statement.

“On the heels of [Eastwood’s] extraordinary work in ‘American Sniper,’ it is tremendously exciting to see him explore the life of another captivating true-life hero,” added Warner Bros. exec Greg Silverman.

No word yet on when production is expected to begin. Stay tuned.

  • ‘Wonder Woman’ Has a New Director: Patty Jenkins

64th Annual Directors Guild Of America Awards - Arrivals
Onetime “Thor: The Dark World” director Patty Jenkins is changing comics allegiances, switching from Marvel to DC to helm the upcoming Wonder Woman movie.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jenkins just closed a deal with Warner Bros. to take over the project from Michelle MacLaren, who departed the flick just days ago amid creative differences with the studio. Warner Bros. was reportedly eager to have a woman helm the film, and looked specifically for female directors for the project.

Jenkins, who directed “The Killing,” had previously been attached to “Thor” sequel “The Dark World,” but in a similar situation to MacLaren, left the project over creative differences with Marvel Studios. (Ironically, replacement director Alan Taylor also had some well-documented creative issues with that film.) She would have been the first female to direct a tentpole superhero flick, a distinction that should stick this time around.

Here’s hoping Jenkins’s hiring is the final one, and work on the long-awaited “Wonder Woman” can get underway. The flick, starring Gal Gadot, is tentatively scheduled for a June 2017 release.

According to Deadline’s report, the recently-released “It’s What I Do” was a hot commodity in Hollywood when its rights became available, and several other star-studded teams were vying for the property. Lawrence and Spielberg reportedly beat out the likes of Reese Witherspoon, Margot Robbie, George Clooney, and the team of Darren Aronofsky and Natalie Portman for the project.
