    • Walt Disney Studios made its presentation to the 2026 CinemaCon crowd.
    • Among the movies promoted were ‘The Mandalorian & Grogu’ and ‘The Dog Stars’.
    • And, of course, ‘Avengers: Doomsday’.

Once the all-conquering ruler of the box office, Disney has seen its fortunes take a tumble in the last couple of years, with the likes of Marvel and Pixar movies suffering issues at the box office.

Still, the Mouse House still has quite the line up, with the likes of ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ as big hope points.

Pixar, meanwhile, has a new ‘Toy Story’ offering, and ‘Star Wars’ is back on the big screen. Plus ‘Moana’ is getting the live-action treatment. Let’s see what the company chooses to spotlight…

Before the lights went down, attendees were given a ‘Mandalorian & Grogu’ popcorn bag and a ‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’-branded diet coke.

The typical studio sizzle reel kicked things off, with plenty of Disney highlights and wrapping with riffs on ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ –– the countdown clock that has been part of the promos so far counting down to zero and the caption “Disney will return to CinemaCon.”

There is, of course, a little boasting to de done about last year’s success stories, including a joke about renaming ‘Zootopia 2’ to “Zootopia $1.9 billion”.

With the comedy sequel just a couple of weeks away from release, there wasn’t too much on it, just a quick video message from Anne Hathaway: “20 years later, we are back!” She also thanked theater owners for their support.

But did also cue up some new footage from the movie. Three words: Miranda. Priestly. Zingers.

Surely one of the biggest titles (outside of the MCU) to be showcased here is the return of ‘Star Wars’ to the big screen.

Writer/director Jon Favreau arrived on stage to remark how the opening shot of the original ‘Star Wars’ changed the path of his life, and how there will be plenty of IMAX footage in the new movie. Not to mention a fresh score from composer Ludwig Göransson.

Favreau announced the final trailer for the movie (which you can see above) and also showed the opening sequence, which includes an AT-AT in the snow before we watch Mando (Pedro Pascal) get his next bounty hunting gig.

If you’re wondering whether ‘Star Wars: Starfighter’ got a mention, the answer is yes –– but only in picture form, and nothing we haven’t seen before.

We went from the galaxy far, far away to the Pixar universe, via some ‘Toy Story 5’ footage. This time around, Woody (who has been off helping rescue other toys) and Buzz, along with their friends, must confront a new toy in Bonnie’s life –– a tech gadget called Lily Pad (voiced by Greta Lee).

Tim Allen (Buzz) and Tom Hanks (Woody) strode on stage to talk about their latest animated effort. The pair exchanged light banter, made fun of working off of a teleprompter and gave plenty of love to the Pixar team. They also introduced a new clip from the movie, featuring their characters reuniting.

Next up is Disney’s ongoing effort to convert all of their animated output to live-action movies. ‘Moana’, which was a huge success in cartoon form back in 2016, is back with a mostly new cast, though retained Dwayne Johnson as Maui.

He was on stage to discuss the film and gush about how much Maui means to him and how his performance was inspired by his grandfather. Johnson was joined by Catherine Laga’aia, who plays Moana, and she revealed that she’d done her very first interview for the movie today.

And, as is standard, we got some new footage from the movie.

Next up from the House of Mouse, an original – Ridley Scott‘s latest, ‘The Dog Stars’ Sir Rid himself appeared (on screen) to introduce the post-apocalyptic story, which stars Jacob Elordi, Margaret Qualley and Josh Brolin.

It’s set after the world’s population has been ravaged by a pandemic, and follows Elordi’s Hig, who lives a lonesome existence in a Colorado airplane hangar with his dog and a dour gunman (Brolin) he has befriended. When a mysterious transmission comes through on the radio while he’s flying his old Cessna, it sparks a hunt for the provenance of the sound.

Scott brought the audience first new trailer for the movie, which you can find above, and an early scene.

    ‘Whalefall’

We’re clearly in the “originals” section (okay, both ‘The Dog Stars’ and this are adapted from novels), as ‘Whalefall’ was next.

The movie follows a scuba diver in search of his deceased father’s remains gets swallowed by an 80-foot, 60-ton sperm whale and has only one hour to escape before his oxygen runs out. After giving up on life, the young man is surprised to find a reason to live in the most dangerous and unlikely of places. Oh, and like Ridley Scott’s movie, this also features Josh Brolin.

‘Whalefall’ comes from director Brian Duffield, who previously brought us ‘No One Will Save You’. And the first look at the movie finds the main character, played by Austin Abrams, getting drawn into the mouth of the whale.

We got a look at footage from the beginning of the movie, which features an adorable baby Scratch (the squirrel, in case you forgot).

Of course Marvel was going to wrap things up with what Disney is hoping will be one of, if not the biggest film of the year. No pressure, then…

Marvel boss Kevin Feige arrived on stage to discuss ‘Doomsday’ and introduce something called ‘Infinity Vision’ which will enhance the viewing experience (read more about that here). He also mentioned that ‘Avengers: Endgame’ will be back in theaters ahead of the new movie.

Feige was joined by directors Joe and Anthony Russo, who talked about how Doctor Doom (played in the new movie, of course, by Robert Downey Jr.) is the best Marvel villain because he’s always three steps ahead.

And then it was the turn of the man himself (RDJ, not Doom), on stage to announce he wants to give away all the spoilers, but isn’t permitted (and anyway, that’s Tom Holland‘s job).

A first proper trailer for ‘Doomsday’ played (lots of X-Men) action, and Chris Evans appeared on stage to admit he was only going to return to the MCU for a good reason (no jokes about dump trucks full of money, please). There was a mock argument between RDJ and Evans about their characters.

The trailer played a second time, and let’s just say this… there was screaming in the audience.

And with that, Disney’s out! Which also marks the end of the studio presentations. Hope you enjoyed our coverage!

Opening in theaters on December 19th is ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’, which is the highly anticipated third installment of ‘Avatar’, one of the most successful franchises of all time, and was once again directed by Oscar winner James Cameron (‘The Terminator’).

    FWuSGLyAAvtzTcYFpQsOf6

The sequel stars Sam Worthington (‘Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1’), Zoe Saldaña (‘Emilia Pérez’), Sigourney Weaver (‘Aliens’), Stephen Lang (‘Sisu: Road to Revenge’), Oona Chaplin (‘Game of Thrones’), Jack Champion (‘Trap House’), Giovanni Ribisi (‘Saving Private Ryan’), Edie Falco (‘The Sopranos’), and Kate Winslet (‘Titanic’).

I walked away from watching ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ having the same reaction I did to the last two ‘Avatar’ movies. I thought it was a completely entertaining and stunningly visual theatrical experience, and I will probably never watch it again. It’s a one-time theatrical experience, not unlike an amusement park ride or seeing a concert at The Sphere, it’s extremely satisfying, but only once.

The movie is meant to be seen in 3D on the biggest screen possible surrounded by an audience, and in that way, ‘Fire and Ash’ is a huge triumph, and another cinematic extravaganza from the “King of the World” James Cameron. But, with vague characters that never grow or change, a limited plot and almost no real story to tell, I fear the movie will not hold up in repeat viewings, especially on smaller home screens, with no real substance outside of the visual spectacle.

    Story and Direction

Following the events of ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’, ‘Fire and Ash’ finds Jake (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri’s (Zoe Saldaña) family dealing with the aftermath or their son Neteyam’s (Jamie Flatters) death. With their adopted son Spider’s (Jack Champion) breathing mask running out of battery, they plan to travel back to Dr. Spellman’s (Joel David Moore) base to get a new mask but are attacked by a new, aggressive Na’vi tribe, the Mangkwan clan, also called the Ash People, led by the fiery tribe leader, Varang (Oona Chaplin).

Meanwhile, Spider’s birthfather and Jake’s sworn enemy Colonel Miles Quaritch (Stephen Lang) is still in hot pursuit of Jake and his family. Soon, Quaritch makes a deal with the Mangkwan clan and teams up with Varang to wipe out Jake and his clan. Now, Jake and his family must fight Quaritch and the Mangkwan clan to save Spider, their people, and the planet from destruction.

That’s the basic plot, and let’s be honest, it’s a little thin. The visual effects and the world building that Cameron has created masks it in the first viewing, but once you take this movie out of the incredible theatrical experience, I fear the film will have nothing valuable to offer.

(L to R) Director James Cameron and Zoe Saldana on the set of 20th Century Studios' 'Avatar: Fire and Ash'. Photo by Mark Fellman. © 2024 20th Century Studios. All Rights Reserved.

But it’s not just the story that is thin, there is also no real character development, and the characters are more like archetypes than real people. There are also so many characters that it’s hard to get enough time to really care about any of them. Kate Winslet’s Ronal, who was a lead in the last film is barely in this one, and even Zoe Saldaña’s Neytiri, arguably the heart of the franchise, is regulated to the background. And the two main characters of the franchise, Jake and Quaritch, now seem like characterizations of the actual characters they once played.

But at the end of the day, I guess you’re not going to an ‘Avatar’ movie for a great story or in-depth character development, you are going for the visuals and the spectacle, and in that sense, Cameron delivers a home run crafting a must-see theatrical experience. It’s kind of like eating at McDonald’s, the foods not good for you, but it tastes great going down!

    Cast and Performances

With a script, story, and characters as poorly crafted as this, it seems almost unfair to criticize the actors and their performances as I’m sure they did their best, but here we go.

After three films, and almost 20 years of playing the character, you would hope for more from Sam Worthington. His Jake Sully is still the heroic leader, but we really know very little about the character at this point other than he wants to protect his family and the actor’s performance is one-note at best.

As previously mentioned, it was shocking to see how limited screen time Zoe Saldaña and Kate Winslet’s characters had, especially considering Saldaña was really the lead of the first film, and Winslet the lead of the second. Neither actress has enough to do in this installment, which is disappointing and a waste of the two Oscar winning actress’ talents.

Varang (Oona Chaplin) in 20th Century Studios' 'Avatar: Fire and Ash'. Photo courtesy of 20th Century Studios. © 2025 20th Century Studios. All Rights Reserved.

However, the one standout performance of the film is from new edition Oona Chaplin, who gives a fiery performance as Mangkwan clan leader Varang. Actor Jack Champion is also quite compelling as Spider this time around, growing into the part and surprisingly having a bigger role in the story in this new installment.

While somewhat limited, legendary actress Sigourney Weaver returns as both Dr. Grace Augustine and her Avatar’s daughter, Kiri, who was also adopted by Jake and his family. Augustine may not appear on screen for long, but Kiri is a major part of the story and Weaver is excellent playing the rebellious teenage Na’vi.

Giovanni Ribisi and Edie Falco also return as members of the evil RDA military and mining operations, but like many of the other excellent actors in this film, are given very little to do other than move the plot forward with exposition.

Finally, Stephen Lang still plays Colonel Miles Quaritch like a generic villain, and while he does have some great moments with both Chaplin and Champion, the character, who technically died in the first movie, hasn’t changed at all and is still playing the same note.

    Final Thoughts

While the story and character development are almost nonexistent, and the dialogue at times is laughable, director James Cameron still delivers a visually stunning and completely satisfying and entertaining theatrical experience, even if it will only work in your first viewing. ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ is worth spending money to see it in a theater, but after that, you can forget about it and will probably never revisit the film again.

‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ receives a score of 79 out of 100.

What is the plot of ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’?

A year after settling in with the Metkayina clan, Jake (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri’s (Zoe Saldaña) family grapples with grief after Neteyam’s death. They encounter a new, aggressive Na’vi tribe, the Mangkwan clan, also called the Ash People, led by the fiery tribe leader, Varang (Oona Chaplin), who has allied with Jake’s enemy, Quaritch (Stephen Lang), as the conflict on Pandora escalates to devastating consequences.

In theaters on October 10 via Walt Disney Studios is ‘TRON: Ares’, the third entry in the franchise about artificial beings existing on a computer grid.

Directed by Joachim Rønning (‘Young Woman and the Sea’), the new movie stars Jared Leto (‘Suicide Squad’), Greta Lee (‘Past Lives’) Evan Peters (‘X-Men: Apocalypse’), Gillian Anderson (‘Scoop’), Jodie Turner-Smith (‘Queen & Slim’) and Jeff Bridges (‘TRON: Legacy’).

The ‘Tron’ movies have always been about humanity’s connection to –– and issues with –– technology, and as AI dominates headlines, the time seems right for a new entry to the venerable franchise, which has so far only put out two entries.

Yet the latest suffers from some very basic issues, especially when it comes to its script, but does have enough entertainment value.

    Script and Direction

The new movie’s script, written by Jesse Wigutow (David DiGilio receives a “story by” credit) makes the whole affair feel like a video game that has some impressive graphics, but not quite enough power to make it work fully. It’s loaded up with coincidence and contrivance along the lines of many basic would-be blockbusters.

And while it doesn’t lean too heavily on nostalgia, there’s a chunk of it near the end which, while it allows for a welcome return, does tend the drain the tension.

Director Joachim Rønning, meanwhile, has experience with this sort of big scale movies, but he can only do so much to inject humanity into the overall result.

Jared Leto actually tones things down, Ares naturally being a more muted character until he starts to evolve. He’s perfectly serviceable in the role, and even funny towards the end.

Greta Lee enjoys some decent moments, but is mostly saddled with a character you feel like came straight off the peg in terms of story arc.

Evan Peters has fun as the villainous Julian Dillinger, but spare a thought for poor Gillian Anderson who pop ups for a couple of scenes as his mother but is essentially a walking cliché.

‘TRON: Ares’ goes down as a decent, if sometimes uninspired threequel, mostly notable for a booming score from Nine Inch Nails.

If your biggest idea is “life is impermanent,” you might want to consider a rewrite before heading to production.

Opening in theaters on June 20th is ‘Elio’, which is the new movie from Pixar Animation Studios and was directed by Madeline Sharafian (‘Inside Out 2‘), Domee Shi (‘Turning Red’), and Adrian Molina (‘Coco’).

The film features voice work from Oscar winner Zoe Saldaña (‘Emilia Pérez’), Brad Garrett (‘Finding Dory’), Jameela Jamil (‘She-Hulk: Attorney at Law’), Shirley Henderson (‘Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker’), Matthias Schweighöfer (‘Army of the Dead’), Ana de la Reguera (‘The Forever Purge’), and introducing Yonas Kibreab as Elio Solis.

Moviefone recently had the pleasure of speaking in-person with Yonas Kibreab about his work on ‘Elio’, his first reaction to the screenplay and the animation, working with Pixar, recording alone and with other actors, his favorite scene, and what he hopes kids take away from watching the movie.

You can read the full interview below or click on the video player above to watch our interviews with Kibreab, asl well as directors Madeline Sharafian and Domee Shi, and producer Mary Alice Drumm.

Moviefone: To begin with, what was your first reaction to reading the screenplay and why did you want to be part of this project?

Yonas Kibreab: Okay, so when I first got the full script, what tied me to this character of Elio was that he can relate to me in a lot of ways. I feel like he’s such a quirky kid. He doesn’t care about what people think, and he’s not afraid to be himself. I think that’s something that I must really channel, just like Elio. He’s taught me to always be myself, the best self I can be. When reading the script, the writers at Pixar did such an amazing job describing everything, although I couldn’t see the animation yet, I could picture everything in my mind. It turned out exactly what I imagined and more.

MF: What was your first reaction to the animation and the way your character would look on screen?

YK: I saw storyboards of it. He didn’t look the same. But he had a little bit longer hair. But other than that, he looked similar. I think when I saw the first animated footage was at D23 in 2023, when they first announced the movie. I think that was the first time I’ve seen him. It’s just so crazy to see somebody who you’re playing, especially in an original Pixar movie because I’ve watched Pixar movies since I was little, and I still do today.

MF: What was your experience like working with Pixar?

YK: It was great. When I got to go to the Pixar studio up in Emeryville, California, it was the most magical campus I’ve ever been to. I want to work there, and just being able to be in that same studio where Jamie Foxx and Tom Hanks were recording all these famous Pixar movies, was so surreal to me. Meeting all the very talented artists at Pixar, it was just so great to meet them.

MF: Did you work with any of the other actors, or did you record your dialogue alone?

YK: Yes, usually I am by myself, but I’ve been lucky enough to record with Remy Edgerly who plays Glordon. He’s such an amazing kid and it’s been great because usually, I worked on stuff with adults. Being able to also work on a voiceover animated movie where you don’t record with anybody, but to record for the first time with a kid, is so refreshing. It was so great to work with him and I’ve got to know him off-screen as well. We did press stuff in Disney World, and we got to go on rides together. It’s so cool. I feel like we should always experience that. That’s the one thing I wish I could change about the way movies are recorded, especially animated ones. Because I don’t know how they did it back then, but now, usually you’re recording by yourself, and I feel like it’s so important to play off the people you’re working with.

MF: Is there a particular scene in the film that you were excited to see on the big screen for the first time?

YK: Yes. I think I’m going to have to say the scene where Elio and Glordon are crawling in the lava tunnel. Glordon’s like, “Just get in my mouth.” And I’m like, “No, I don’t want to do that. I’m not fireproof.” That’s probably one of my favorite scenes also to record.

MF: Finally, can you talk about the movie’s message and what do you hope young audiences take away from seeing the film?

YK: I hope the first thing that they take away is just how amazing this movie is, but also just how important your friends and your family are. Friendship is very important, just like Elio and Glordon, and your friends are always going to be there for you, including your family members. Also, if you’re feeling alone, if you’re feeling like it’s hard to find friends and you’re going through grief, it’s all going to be okay, and you will find your people. Just stay positive.

‘The Amateur’ receives 6 out of 10 stars.

Opening in theaters April 11 is ‘The Amateur,’ directed by James Hawes and starring Rami Malek, Laurence Fishburne, Rachel Brosnahan, Caitriona Balfe, Holt McCallany, Julianne Nicholson, Michael Stuhlbarg, Danny Sapani, and Jon Bernthal.

It’s something that a lot of moviegoers of a certain age all say they want: an adult, intelligent, dramatic thriller, perhaps based on a novel but not adapted from already heavily exploited IP, comic books, toys, or video games. For a little while, ‘The Amateur’ seems to check that box. Based on a novel by Robert Littell (which was filmed previously in 1981 as a Canadian production starring John Savage), directed by James Hawes (who’s got episodes of ‘Doctor Who,’ ‘Black Mirror,’ ‘Snowpiercer,’ and ‘Slow Horses’ under his belt), and featuring an admirable cast of seasoned, reliable actors, ‘The Amateur’ seems almost like a throwback to a different era of filmmaking.

In the end, however, it doesn’t quite live up to its potential. With a largely TV background, Hawes directs the film in almost leisurely, episodic fashion, giving it a stop-and-start pace that never really builds in tension. And too many of the characters – including the lead – are either underused or underdeveloped, leaving the feeling that there’s a longer film – or perhaps, yes, a TV show – somewhere on the cutting room floor.

Rami Malek plays Charlie Heller, an extremely introverted CIA cryptographer whose wife Sarah (Rachel Brosnahan) has to fly off to London for some kind of conference (we don’t really know what she does). But it’s only a couple of days before Charlie is pulled into the office of Deputy CIA Director Moore (Holt McCallany) and informed that Sarah has been killed in a brutal terrorist attack.

A stunned Charlie wants the CIA to retaliate, but when Moore and another superior, Caleb (Danny Sapani), drag their feet, Charlie does some digging – that’s his job – and discovers that Moore has been running a number of unauthorized black ops, some of them against our own allies and involving members of the same terrorist group. So he extorts Moore and Caleb instead: he’ll reveal everything about their operations to the public and the press – unless they give him enough training to go hunt down his wife’s murderers himself.

Forcing their hand for the moment (“What else do you want?” asks a disbelieving Moore. “An Aston-Martin? A jet-pack?”), Charlie comes under the tutelage of master assassin Henderson (Laurence Fishburne). He quickly learns that he can’t shoot worth s**t, but he can build a mean explosive and hack his way into any surveillance or computer system, both of which come in handy when he escapes and heads for Europe after getting wind that Moore plans to have Henderson kill him.

Once overseas, Charlie begins tracking down the people responsible for his wife’s murder, tormenting them in cleverly sadistic ways: in Paris, the sole woman in the group (Barbara Probst) is locked in an isolation booth at an allergy clinic and choked on pumped-in pollen, before she and Charlie engage in a vicious fight that doesn’t end well; later in Madrid, one of the terrorists meets a watery end when Charlie blows up the high-rise glass swimming pool he’s in (which you’ve seen in the trailer about 400 times by now). But as the CIA closes in, Charlie asks for help from “Inquiline” (Caitriona Balfe), an informant he’s been speaking with for years who helps point him in the direction of mastermind Horst Schiller (Michael Stuhlbarg).

James Hawes directs all this in an almost casual fashion, with the occasional shocking bursts of violence (many played in enclosed spaces) frequently followed up by dialogue scenes that dial the energy back down. “How will you fill the silence?” Inquiline asks Charlie at one point, after revealing that she lost a loved one and missed all his sounds around their home. Charlie’s response is to fill it with noise, screams, explosions, and drinks – a sly nod, perhaps, to the much more haunted James Bond of Ian Fleming’s novels than the film franchise. In a way, ‘The Amateur’ is an anti-Bond film: none of this is glamorous, jet-setting or particularly exotic, and Charlie increasingly loses more of his humanity as he pursues his goal.

Unfortunately, these interesting ideas aren’t given more than lip service. ‘The Amateur’ never delves too deeply below the surface, and its 10 screenwriters (only two are credited) fall back on only superficial and predictable thriller tropes. The villain even rolls out a version of the old “we’re not that different” chestnut toward the film’s end, an indication that despite an attempt at a more thoughtful approach, ‘The Amateur’ is slickly professional and nothing more.

    Cast and Performances

The cast here is great on paper, but despite working hard a lot of them end up shortchanged. Malek is front and center for most of the two hours, but while this Oscar-winning actor has charisma and presence, his retiring performance as Charlie Heller is both nuanced and self-defeating. We want to believe Charlie’s turn from reserved, intensely non-verbal analyst to cold-blooded killer, but the lack of a fully defined character and even some background (does Charlie have parents? Does his dead wife? Is he possibly on the spectrum?) doesn’t put enough texture on Charlie’s character to make him fully come alive.

The same could be said of much of the rest of the ensemble. Laurence Fishburne probably comes off best and gives us the sense of a more complex soul underneath his tough exterior, but he only shows up sporadically. Rachel Brosnahan’s presence as Charlie’s wife is as ghostly as the flashbacks she’s in. Holt McCallany (so good in ‘The Iron Claw’) might as well have a big ‘VILLAIN’ sign stamped across his forehead, while Michael Stuhlbarg goes for the restrained, cultured heavy in his five or so minutes on screen. But the shortest end of the stick is handed to Jon Bernthal as a CIA spook who turns up in exactly two scenes, neither of which have any real point to them at all. We have to believe a lot of his material got the chop – why would you hire Jon Bernthal and give him nothing to do?

    Final Thoughts

Rami Malek in 'The Amateur'. Photo: 20th Century Studios.
Rami Malek in ‘The Amateur’. Photo: 20th Century Studios.

Its initially restrained pacing and low-key atmosphere had us on board with ‘The Amateur’ at first, but Malek’s performance and the film itself never quite catch fire. Too many red herrings – like the completely bizarre reappearance of Bernthal late in the film – also diffuse any rising sense of danger or confrontation.

‘The Amateur’ does have its moments: the fight scenes provide a jolt of whiplash, violent oomph, and Charlie’s inventive traps for his targets are the thriller equivalents of something out of a ‘Saw’ film. While ‘The Amateur’ does provide a certain level of entertainment for a more grown-up audience, it may not be enough to get them to a movie theater – which is exactly where we need more of this stuff.

    Preview:

    • Disney brought several movies to its CinemaCon 2025 presentation.
    • The likes of ‘Tron: Ares,’ ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’ and more were showcased.
    • ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ also showed footage, alongside Pixar’s Elio, Freakier Friday and the new, live-action/CG ‘Lilo & Stitch

While it is still looking to rebuild its fortunes, Disney can at least look back on 2024 as one with several big hits, especially ‘Inside Out 2’ and ‘Deadpool & Wolverine.’

But it will have to prove that this year’s slate can match past successes. Luckily, the Mouse House has more strings to its bow than even the likes of Universal or Warner Bros., and heavy hitters including Pixar, Marvel and James Cameron’s ‘Avatar’ series primed and ready with new entries, plus the return of ‘Tron’ to the grid… er, cinemas.

Predictions also include a potential hint on more ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ casting, following the viral chair back video of last week.

    Disney’s 2025 slate shown at CinemaCon 2025.

Let’s run down what was actually showcased…

Following the usual stuff about sponsors and theater owners (got to play to the crowd!), the Disney presentation signaled the end of CinemaCon’s studio events and began with the traditional sizzle reel of upcoming movies, framed in amusing fashion by having ‘Lilo & Stitch’s titular blue troublemaker wander through the rest of the slate.

Getting the presentation off to its formal stage start was Alan Bergman, co-chairman of Disney Entertainment.

He was joined by Andrew Cripps, head of theatrical distribution at the studio to unveil the typically packed schedule of movies the studio will have across the rest of the year, and to extol the fact that Disney movies are Disney movies are typically in theaters an average of three weeks longer than any other studio.

The latest animated-to-live-action conversion project faces additional pressure following ‘Snow White’s poor showing at the box office this past month. With Disney bosses pushing pause on a planned ‘Tangled’ live-action movie, ‘Lilo’ will need to perform in order to keep that particular strand of the company’s strategy alive beyond ‘Moana,’ due next year.

Some fresh, sneak peek footage from the new movie was screened for the crowd, featuring Stitch on a trip with Lilo and family; they go to a restaurant where the little blue alien causes the requisite chaos even as Lilo tries to teach him to behave. Some of what was shown has already popped up in the trailer, including Stitch squirting her with a soda gun.

‘Lilo & Stitch’ will invade cinemas on May 23rd.

Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan were ushered on stage to promote this sequel to the 2003 original, which moves the story forward and features even more body-switching chaos than last time as Curtis’ Tess and Lindsay’s Anna Coleman switch places with their teenage daughter/granddaughter.

Curtis and Lohan cued up a look at some brand new footage from the movie, which according to the duo has been playing well with test audiences.

Curtis says that the film was…

“Made to be seen on a big screen.”

The scene played showed Tess and Anna trying to win back Anna’s boyfriend –– but in different bodies.

The studio went all out with a light show to promote the third ‘Tron’ movie, and also brought Jeff Bridges and new franchise face Jared Leto to the stage.

    Bridges said,

“To be back on the grid was incredible, and working with Jared… It was a great time.”

For his part, Leto said he was obsessed and this was everything he wanted from a movie. It took him to a world he had never seen before.

    Leto described his character, Ares:

“An advanced program that crosses over to real world to fulfill his directive.”

After confirmation of Nine Inch Nails doing the music for the new movie, we got a look at some new footage.

What was screened was a look at Ares riding his bike in the real world, with Bridges’ Kevin Flynn narrating. We also see him ask Ares, “Are you ready? Because there is no coming back…”

The new ‘Predator’ movie from ‘Prey’s Dan Trachtenberg immediately looked interesting, since the Predator creature is more of a protagonist in this one, and it takes place on a new planet where he’s been exiled and must fight his way back.

Star (no, not as the Predator!) Elle Fanning arrived on stage to confirm that this movie breaks new ground in the ‘Predator’ universe. She also said something unprecedented happens. Her character is not being chased, she teams up with Predator and you see him in new light.

She cued up the first trailer for the new movie, which sees the Predator battling a giant, nearly invincible beast with Fanning’s help.

    That was followed the trailer.

Based on based on the 1981 novel ‘The War of the Roses’ by Warren Adler, the film movie Benedict Cumberbatch, Olivia Colman, Andy Samberg, Allison Janney, Ncuti Gatwa, Jamie Demetriou, Zoë Chao and Kate McKinnon.

Unlike the 1989 version, this Jay Roach-directed sees Cumberbatch and Colman as a successful chef and her businessman husband whose lives start to fall apart when he’s fired.

Talking of guns, we moved on to one of the studio’s biggest… Marvel!

First up was the next movie from the prolific superhero franchise.

    Thunderbolts*

The ‘Thunderbolts*’ portion of the show kicked off with a funny bit about the cast being MIA –– Wyatt Russell appeared to have lost a lot of cash in the casino with co-star Julia Louis-Dreyfus hoping the movie makes money so they can pay his debts!

But the main five –– Florence Pugh, David Harbour, Russell, Hannah John-Kamen and Louis-Dreyfus emerged from the audience to head on stage and talk up the movie before introducing some fresh footage.

The scene featured the Thunderbolts driving through New York as Harbour’s Red Guardian tries to bond with Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan). The team has to fight their way through bad guys to Avengers tower.

We got an extended look at the Avengers Tower scene where Louis-Dreyfus gathers the gang –– after having sent them to kill each other and being frustrated that they teamed up.

There was also a very brief look at the introduction of Sentry (Lewis Pullman). And following that? A sizzle reel of scenes from the movie, which appears to be full of chaotic fun.

‘Thunderbolts*’ heads to cinemas on May 2nd. Less than a month for this one, folks!

That was followed by Marvel boss Kevin Feige, currently in the UK on the set of ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ (which is “days away from the start of production”) confirming the appearance of the original X-Men team in the new movie.

He also cued up an early look at…

Marvel’s First Family (played by Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach) are introduced via a talk show piece on how they came to be the super-team they are.

We also got our first look at Julia Garner as the Silver Surfer, who cautions that planet Earth is “marked for death.” Kirby’s Sue Storm says they’ll “fight the threat as a family”.

‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’ flies into theaters on July 25th.

To switch tracks (but still be galactic rather than Galactus), it was the turn of the animation arm(s).

Pixar’s latest finds a young lad dreaming of being abducted by aliens.

Zoe Saldaña, who plays the title character’s Aunt Olga, arrived on stage to talk about the new ‘toon.

A scene from the movie was shown in 3D, showing Elio brought on board an alien spaceship that is more like a living planet via a tractor beam, where he meets the vessel’s AI. He’s been recruited to join the universe’s smartest creatures to work together as a collective… But have they made a mistake? Elio meets and bonds with a young alien creature.

‘Elio’ heads into space (and theaters) on June 20th.

Thanksgiving sees the return of Judy Hopps (Ginnifer Goodwin) and Nick Wilde (Jason Bateman), the mismatched buddy duo of rabbit police officer and crafty fox. This time around, they’re on an undercover mission to stop a murderous reptile (Ke Huy Quan’s Gary).

In a video introduction, we got Bateman changing the show’s title to “ZinemaCon” and there are animal jokes about theaters –– AMZ, Pandango, Fur D X, followed by giving other Disney movies critter-like makeovers (‘Thundercolts,’ ‘Sealio,’ ‘The Fantastic Fur.’)

    'Zootopia 2'. Photo: Disney.

Quan arrived on stage to discuss the sequel and his role as Gary the snake. And that Judy and Nick go to a therapy animal (played by ‘Abbot Elementary’s Quinta Brunson) to sort their strained friendship –– which we saw in a scene from the movie. That was followed by a scene of Nick and Judy at Marsh resort trying to track down Gary.

‘Zootopia 2’ goes wild in theaters on November 26th.

For the big finish, another giant Disney salvo…

James Cameron appeared via video from New Zealand, where he’s still at work on the latest ‘Avatar’ outing. He was sorry he isn’t there in person, but he did tell the crowd he’d sent some footage.

He promised “increased emotional heart and soul,” and that the Sully family will be put through the wringer (again) as they face the Ash People. We’ll also meet the Wind Traders.

Saldaña (who has been part of the franchise since the 2009 original) returned to the stage to introduce the footage.

We saw Jake and wife Neytiri (Saldaña) flying a dragon creature to Wind Traders’ ship where Miles “Spider” Socorro (Jack Champion), the son of Miles Quaritch, lives now.

That preceded a reel of other scenes, including Jake telling Neytiri they can’t live in hate, humans attacked the Na’vi, a shot of the whale-like creatures we met in ‘The Way of Water,’ the return of Stephen Lang’s Quaritch and Varang, the Na’vi leader of the volcano-dwelling Ash People threatening  Kiri (Sigourney Weaver), the daughter of Dr. Grace Augustine’s Na’vi avatar who was adopted by the Sully family.

‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ welcomes us back to Pandora on December 19th.

Directed by Jason Hand, Dana Ledeoux Miller, and David Derrick Jr., the follow-up to 2016’s ‘Moana’ is ready to sail into theaters on November 27, 2024. Auli’i Cravahol and Dwayne Johnson return to voice Moana and Maui once again as they dive into a brand new adventure.

Also returning for ‘Moana 2’ are Temuera Morrison as Chief Tui, Nichole Scherzinger as Sina, Rachel House as Grandmother Tala, and Alan Tudyk as Heihei. New cast members include Hualālai Chung as Moni, David Fane as Kele, and Rose Matafeo as Loto. Awhimai Fraser joins the cast as the mysterious Matangi. Kaleesi Lambert-Tsuda rounds out the cast as Moana’s little sister, Simea.

‘Moana 2’ takes the audience on a brand new adventure as Moana and her crew venture into uncharted waters. While the new characters bring some excitement to the sequel, the movie truly shines when Moana and Maui are on screen together, which doesn’t come until later on in the film. The friendship and chemistry between the tattooed demi-god and Wayfinder is truly the glue and heartbeat of the film.

The animation is gorgeous and seems to be even more colorful than the first. It should also mentioned that the representation of the Pacific Islanders is even more so highlighted in this. ‘Moana 2’ starts strong but loses its pacing in the second act. However, the third act brings the excitement right back, with quite a few heartfelt and emotional moments.

The movie opens with Moana exploring an unknown island, searching for any traces of life, past or present. With her trusty, but not exactly helpful, animal sidekicks Pua and Heihei by her side, Moana stumbles upon a partially broken pottery with a motif depicting people next to a mountain – eluding that there are other inhabited islands out there.

As Moana sails home with her new discovery, she’s welcomed back by her village with open arms. This is where the film introduces Moana’s little sister Simea. Though there is a pretty large age gap between Moana and Simea, the two have an extremely close-knit relationship.

That evening, Moana is to receive her title as Chief, but the ceremony is interrupted by a powerful lightning that nearly strikes Moana, sending her a vision from her ancestor, Matai Vasa. She sees her ancestors looking for Motufetu – the island that was depicted on the pottery she found. The vision also shows Moana what will happen if she fails to find Motufetu, her own island will meet its demise.

The vision also tells Moana that Motufetu once had channels that connected people across the ocean, but the Storm God Nalo wanted more power and put a curse upon the island, therefore separating the people of the ocean. To break the curse, Moana must travel beyond the waters that she knows and find Motufetu.

In the meantime, Maui is seen standing in front of a purple portal, as he mentions that the powerful Storm God Nalo has started something sinister. Maui is interrupted by Matangi – a mysterious figure who is shrouded in shadow and bats. Turns out that Matangi works for Storm God Nola and will do anything to prevent Maui or anyone else from reaching Motufetu to break Nalo’s curse.

From there, the adventure kicks off as Moana and her crew – Kele, Moni, and Loto, sail across the ocean in search of Motufetu. On the way, they encounter several ferocious sea monsters and the fearsome Kakamora. The stakes feel even higher for Moana this time around as the film explores the close relationship between Moana and Simea. The little sister has a hard time seeing Moana leave, not knowing when she’ll return. Moana shows Simea that they are always connected by the ocean, no matter how far apart they may be.

As for Moana and her crew, while they prove to be helpful in the journey to Motufetu, there is little emotional attachment to these characters. Moni seems to be the most highlighted out of the group as he is a self-proclaimed Maui superfan, which became a hilarious running gag throughout the movie. Kele has a bit of a character arc as he sheds a little of his initial grumpy persona towards the end. Loto, as brilliant of an engineer as she was, was not given more to do other than making improvements on their boat.

The same can be said about the villain, who has incredible character design and animation (and a really awesome song) but falls flat. Matangi is initially presented as a dangerous and powerful adversary to Maui and Moana but is barely used to her full potential.

The film was at its strongest when Moana and Maui shared the screen during an action-filled third act. Despite showing the close connection between Moana and Simea earlier, it is really the friendship between Moana and Maui that’ll give you a lump in your throat.

‘Moana 2’ is a fun sequel and has gorgeous animation. It clearly shows Moana’s growth since the last movie. She is comfortable in her skin and is on her way to becoming a capable leader to her people. This new adventure puts difficult challenges before her that’ll make her question her abilities but will also see her find her footing in unfamiliar situations. The movie has a strong first and third act but loses steam in the second act due to little character development between Moana and her crew, and it felt like there were pieces of story or scenes missing.

How Do the Songs of ‘Moana 2’ Compare To the First?

(L to R) Emily Bear and Abigail Barlow. Photo: Walt Disney Animation.

Songwriters Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear are tapped to pen new songs for ‘Moana 2’, with composers Opetaia Foa‘i and Mark Mancina also returning. Songs like ‘Beyond’ and “Get Lost” were the two most memorable, with “Can I Get A Chee Hoo” and “We’re Back” being a close second. As much as the new songs have the flavor from the first film, it doesn’t quite capture the magic that was created by Lin Manuel-Miranda.

    Final Thoughts

A fun sequel to the 2016 film. It’s great to see Moana’s story continue and to see the representation of the Pacific Islanders’ culture on screen. The film starts off strong by building up the anticipation for the journey to Motufetu. However, it loses its footing in the second act, and aside from the excitement of seeing the army of Kakamora and the sea monsters, it felt much to be desired. Moni, Kele, and Loto’s characters could have been fleshed out a bit more, and at times, it felt like too much was cut out of a scene to meet the 1 hour and 40 minutes run time.

The movie does regain momentum in the final act, where Moana and Maui share the most screen time. The friendship and chemistry between the two is unmatched. This movie is a great way to continue Moana’s journey. It shows there are more stories to be told and places to explore. With that said, make sure you stay all the way through the credits for an extra surprise.

‘Moana 2’ receives 7 out of 10 stars.

  • Disney Shuffling Release Dates for Marvel Movies and More

The ongoing writers’ strike (and potential action from other guilds such as the actors’ union) is having a major impact on studio output. And Disney is not immune to changes in schedule. The company has announced that it is moving the release dates for a lot of its big upcoming movies, and that means we’ll all have to be patient when it comes to the likes of Marvel, James Cameron’s ‘Avatar’ and the ‘Star Wars’ galaxy.

    MCU shifts

Marvel, of course, has been delaying some of its films’ production and that is having a domino effect for the highly connected cinematic universe, which relies on films to set up the next entries. Lest the tapestry all unravel, that means moving some movies back.

Captain America: Brave New World’ is moving to August 26th next year, which pushes ‘Thunderbolts’ to December 20th, 2024, ‘Blade’ to February 14th, 2025, and the still in-development ‘Fantastic Four’ to May 2nd, 2025.

And because there is only so much space on the calendar (and Disney seemingly already takes up a third of it), that means the next giant, phase-ending team-up movies are also on the move. ‘Avengers: The Kang Dynasty’ will be bumped back a year, to May 1st, 2026, inheriting the release date for follow-up ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’, which itself is headed to May 7th, 2027.

It’s not all delays for the MCU, though; ‘Deadpool 3’, which is in production, will move up from its original November 8th, 2024, date to May 3rd of that year.

    More ‘Avatar’ delays

'Avatar: The Way of Water' will be available exclusively to purchase on Digital March 28th.
‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ will be available exclusively to purchase on Digital March 28th.

Though James Cameron’s movies would seemingly not be impacted by a writers’ strike since their scripts are essentially finished, the series can’t avoid the release date shuffle.

That means ‘Avatar’ fans, already well used to the waiting game, will see their patience tested further, since ‘Avatar 3’ has moved to December 19th, 2025, ‘Avatar 4’ to December 21st, 2029, and ‘Avatar 5’ all the way to December 19th, 2031! which means the apparent final movie will land 22 years after the original 2009 film.

If you were starting to wonder when we might ever see a new ‘Star Wars’ movie, then there’s good news.

2026 will see two movies set in that galaxy far, far away from Lucasfilm, one on May 22nd, 2026 (not the fourth?) and another set for the more traditional recent slot of December 18th that year.

A third film is reportedly headed our way on December 17th, 2027. Disney has yet to clarify any details of which of its in-development movies are taking those berths, but we can assume one is the Rey follow-up starring Daisy Ridley which has Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy in the director’s chair and was confirmed at Star Wars Celebration. On the basis of that, we can also predict that Dave Filoni’s film and possibly James Mangold‘s movie might be in the other two slots.

Get ready to head back into the unknown. Disney animated films ‘Frozen,’ ‘Toy Story,’ and ‘Zootopia‘ have been greenlit for sequels. The news was announced during Wednesday’s Q1 earnings call by Disney CEO Bob Iger, his first since returning to the company.

“Today I’m so pleased to announce that we have sequels in the works from our animation studios to some of our most popular franchises, ‘Toy Story,’ ‘Frozen’ and ‘Zootopia,’” says Iger. “We’ll have more to share about these productions soon, but this is a great example of how we’re leaning into our unrivaled brands and franchises.”

‘Frozen’ quickly became a household favorite when it premiered in 2013. With Kristen Bell and Idina Menzel as its leads, the sequel ‘Frozen 2’ garnered just as much attention in 2019. It got so popular that the musical version made its way to Disneyland’s Hyperion Theater and later to Broadway. ‘Toy Story’ stars the voices Tom Hanks and Tim Allen as Woody and Buzz Lightyear, becoming a beloved franchise since its debut in 1995. It even expanded its own universe with the release of ‘Lightyear’ in 2022 with Chris Evans as the lead.

The Box Office Success Of ‘Frozen’, ‘Toy Story’, and ‘Zootopia’

This should come as no surprise as all three films have had major success at the box office worldwide. ‘Frozen’ (2013) earned 1.2 billion with its sequel ‘Frozen 2’ (2019) earning 1.4 billion, and both ‘Toy Story 4’ (2019) and ‘Zootopia’ (2016) grossed over one billion.

On top of their financial success, these films have all taken home plenty of awards. ‘Toy Story 3,’ ‘Toy Story 4,’ ‘Frozen,’ and ‘Zootopia’ have all received Best Animated Feature at the Oscars. Frozen’s hit original song “Let It Go” (sung by Broadway superstar Idina Menzel) won Best Original Song at the 2020 Academy Awards.

The animation giant has released plenty of amazing titles such as ‘Luca,’ ‘Raya and the Last Dragon‘ and ‘Encanto,’ which also won Best Animated Feature at the 2022 Academy Awards. However popular, none of these titles were able to achieve the financial success of the aforementioned films.

But Do We Need More Sequels?

Some may say there’s no need for a sequel to these films but I think, there are plenty of stories left to tell. What type of adventures (or misadventures) can the sisters get into now that Elsa is the Snow Queen and Anna rules as the Queen of Arendelle? How expansive has Zoopotia become since the last film? And while Woody and Buzz may have parted ways (for now), there’s always something that brings the duo back together, plus we all would love to see a post-college Andy.

Those who are craving original stories can look forward to Pixar’s ‘Elemental’ this summer and ‘Wish’ from Walt Disney Animation in the fall.

  • Bob Iger Returns As Disney CEO

In a move that was both surprising and, in its own way predictable, former Disney CEO Bob Iger has returned to his old job just two days after departing it.

The news was announced by Disney on Sunday, with current CEO Bob Chapek stepping down immediately and Iger taking his place.

The surprising aspect is that Iger had groomed Chapek to be his replacement for a few years before he departed Disney in February 2020. Chapek, of course couldn’t have known what was to come in the following months and years as Disney’s fortunes were severely hit by the Covid pandemic, which closed down theme parks, cancelled cruises and hit box office returns for the company’s movies.

And while he had attempted to steer it through further building up its streaming services, he was seen as making missteps when it came to dealing with talent and deals – including a protracted issue with Scarlett Johansson after releasing Marvel’s ‘Black Widow’ concurrently on Disney+ without factoring in its deal with the star.

More recently, Disney revealed a huge stock price problem, with earnings reports showing big profit problems. Which all led to suspicion that Chapek might not be long for the big corporate seat. Still, Iger being the man to replace him is both a natural choice and still a surprise.

“I am extremely optimistic for the future of this great company and thrilled to be asked by the Board to return as its CEO,” Iger said in a statement. “Disney and its incomparable brands and franchises hold a special place in the hearts of so many people around the globe—most especially in the hearts of our employees, whose dedication to this company and its mission is an inspiration. I am deeply honored to be asked to again lead this remarkable team, with a clear mission focused on creative excellence to inspire generations through unrivaled, bold storytelling.”

He added to those thoughts in a memo sent to staff: “I know this company has asked so much of you during the past three years, and these times certainly remain quite challenging, but as you have heard me say before, I am an optimist, and if I learned one thing from my years at Disney, it is that even in the face of uncertainty — perhaps especially in the face of uncertainty — our employees and Cast Members achieve the impossible.”

The company offered the following statement about Chapek’s departure. It’s perhaps notable that Chapek himself has not commented on the move. “We thank Bob Chapek for his service to Disney over his long career, including navigating the company through the unprecedented challenges of the pandemic,” said Susan Arnold, chairman of Disney’s board of directors. “The Board has concluded that as Disney embarks on an increasingly complex period of industry transformation, Bob Iger is uniquely situated to lead the Company through this pivotal period.”
