    Preview:

    • Paramount has snatched up the ‘Angry Birds’ movie franchise from Sony.
    • Jason Sudeikis, Josh Gad and Danny McBride are back to lend their voices.
    • ‘The Angry Birds Movie 3’ will be out on January 29th, 2027.

After flinging two movies at theaters in 2016 and 2019, it appears that Sony is ready to let go of the ‘Angry Birds’ franchise.

While it has made more than half a billion dollars so far with ‘The Angry Birds Movie’ and ‘The Angry Birds Movie 2,’ the company is no longer in charge of the franchise, which adapts the popular Rovio video game titles.

Paramount Pictures has now announced that it will be distributing the movies going forward, and has set ‘The Angry Birds Movie 3’ for release in a couple of years.

It’s an interesting gamble, since ‘Angry Birds’ as a game doesn’t have quite the same cultural cachet as other titles –– its younger audience has moved on to others such as ‘Minecraft’ and ‘Fortnite.’

But as ‘Minecraft’ has just proved, video game movies can still do big business at the box office, and Paramount is clearly hoping that ‘Angry Birds’ will spawn the same sort of success as enjoyed by its own ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ franchise.

Just in case you’re not sure what we’re talking about…

What is the ‘Angry Birds’ franchise?

Jaakko Iisalo created the original game for Rovio Entertainment in 2009, which focuses on the titular flock of colorful angry birds who try to save their eggs from green-colored pigs.

Players look to take down the pigs and their structures by flinging the birds –– who have different destructive capabilities –– at the pigs via slingshots. Physics and comedy are intertwined in the games, which have grown into a series.

The original title also spawned a huge multimedia franchise of products and cartoons and SEGA acquired Rovio in 2023 (which might point to why Paramount is now involved, since SEGA also makes the ‘Sonic’ games and co-produces the movies).

‘The Angry Birds Movie’ featured the voices of Jason Sudeikis, Josh Gad, Danny McBride, Maya Rudolph, Kate McKinnon, Sean Penn, Tony Hale, Keegan-Michael Key, Bill Hader, and Peter Dinklage.

The film is focused on Red (Sudeikis), an outcast in an island of anthropomorphic flightless birds, as he suspects a newly arrived crew of pigs led by Leonard (Hader) of plotting an evil plan, and attempts to put a stop to them with the help of his newfound friends Chuck (Gad) and Bomb (McBride).

Sequel ‘The Angry Birds Movie 2’ saw newcomers Leslie Jones, Rachel Bloom, Awkwafina, Sterling K. Brown and Eugenio Derbez joining the ensemble voice cast.

In the story, the birds are forced to team up with the pigs to stop Eagle Island’s leader from destroying both of their islands.

Sudeikis, Gad, Bloom and McBride are all back for the third, with newcomers this time including Emma Myers, Keke Palmer, Tim Robinson, Lily James, Marcello Hernandez, Walker Scobell, Sam Richardson, Anna Cathcart, Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, Nikki Glaser, James Austin Johnson and Psalm West.

Plot details have not been released, but we can guess it’ll feature more conflict between our feathered friends and either the pigs or some new threat.

The new movie will come from director John Rice (who worked on ‘The Angry Birds Movie’) and writer Thurop Van Orman, who contributed to the script for ‘The Angry Birds Movie 2.’

And composer Heitor Pereiram, who scored the last two movies, is also back for the new one.

As with any big release for a franchise film, especially with new owners, there was of course the statements of excitement from the producers and studio.

    Here’s producer John Cohen:

“We’re very excited to be partnering with Paramount Pictures and extremely proud of our incredible cast. Not only do we have Jason, Josh, Rachel and Danny returning to voice their fantastic characters, but they’re surrounded by an all-star ensemble of comedic talent. These are some of the funniest people out there today, and we’re so thrilled to have them all on board.”

And this was the statement from Paramount president of worldwide marketing and distribution Marc Weinstock:

“Angry Birds transcends mediums and has been embraced and celebrated the world over. We couldn’t be happier to be partnering with SEGA/Rovio and these other great partners to bring this latest instalment, featuring an incredible voice cast, to big screens everywhere.”

This came from Flywheel Media boss Don McGregor:

“We’re thrilled to announce that our first theatrical distribution partnership is with Paramount Pictures. As a film production company focused on bringing the best family movies to global audiences, we couldn’t have a better start than ‘The Angry Birds Movie 3.’ ”

    Finally, here’s Rovio’s Alex Pelletier-Normand:

“The Angry Birds brand has demonstrated remarkable versatility, evolving from a global mobile gaming phenomenon to licensed products, animation, and a thriving cinematic franchise. It has been a deeply collaborative effort to create a film that will resonate with the millions who interact with our catalog of games and products every day. We are confident that with this talented team at the helm, ‘The Angry Birds Movie 3’ will delight longtime fans and create new fans in those discovering our flock for the first time.”

When will ‘The Angry Birds Movie 3’ be in theaters?

Paramount’s announcement includes word that the new movie will be on screens on January 29th, 2027.

  • ‘Percy Jackson and the Olympians’ Cast Interviews

Premiering on Disney+ beginning December 20th is ‘Percy Jackson and the Olympians,’ which is based on the book series of the same name by author Rick Riordan and stars Walker Scobell (‘The Adam Project’) in the title role.

(L to R) Leah Sava Jeffries, Walker Scobell and Aryan Simhadri discuss Disney+’s ‘Percy Jackson and the Olympians.’

Moviefone recently had the pleasure of speaking with Walker Scobell, Leah Sava Jeffries and Aryan Simhadri about their work on the series, Annabeth and Percy’s relationship, Percy’s friendship with Grover, the novels the series is based on, and what fans will think of the new show.

'Percy Jackson and the Olympians' stars Walker Scobell as Percy Jackson, Leah Sava Jeffries as Annabeth, and Aryan Simhadri as Grover.

You can read the full interview below or click on the video player above to watch our interviews with Scobell, Jeffries and Simhadri, as well as executive producers Jon Steinberg and Dan Shotz.

Moviefone: To begin with, Walker, what has it been like for you playing the iconic role of Percy Jackson in this new series?

Walker Scobell: I’m very excited and at the same time, I’m a little nervous. I don’t know what people are going to think and I hope they like it.

Leah Jeffries in 'Percy Jackson & The Olympians.'

MF: Leah, can you talk about the relationship between Annabeth and Percy? How would you describe it in your own words?

Leah Sava Jeffries: I feel in this first book, it went from stranger enemies, basically. I feel they were already enemies before they even knew each other. It was like when I first saw him, I was like, “You’re already getting on my nerves.” That’s how Annabeth kind of was though. It was always like, “Are you going to keep talking or are we going to go on the quest now?” It was very much like that, and I felt at the end, going into the second book, that’s when it starts to build into a friendship, and that’s what it was like when we were filming. But TV shows aren’t really filmed all together in unison. Sometimes we film episode eight, and then sometimes we go all the way back to one. So, when we had to film it, we had to change very quickly. So, at the end, it was a little bit closer than the next day. They’re like, “Okay, we’re going all day back to episode three.” Then I’m like, “Can you shut up please?” Then I go all the way back down to, “You’re not so bad.” So, it definitely builds though, but that’s basically how it is.

MW: Aryan, can you talk about Percy and Grover’s friendship and how that is depicted in this series?

Aryan Simhadri: Grover plays a lot of different roles when it comes to helping Percy adjust. He helps him adjust to real human life. It’s hard to imagine someone who’s not human, who ages twice as slow can help someone who is human. But I think Grover is a very emotional character. He has a very deep understanding of how people are feeling around him, and I think that’s what helps Percy on both sides of the mist, I guess.

MF: Walker, do you think fans of the books will enjoy the new series?

WS: I really hope they’ll like it. I think we’ve given them everything they need to like it. It’s very faithful to the books, which I think is very important for this, but I really hope they like it. I don’t know though. Hopefully. I think they will.

MF: Leah, had you read the books before shooting the series, and what do you think about the direction the show is taking the source material?

LSJ: Yes, I did read the books, and I was familiar with them before I had got the part. I also had watched the movie a lot. When I do auditions, they always tell me what the name is. When they first told me they were like, “For Percy Jackson.” I was like, “Wait, they’re making it again?” I was like, “Is it a remake or something?” At first, I didn’t know if it was a series or if it was a movie, so I was like, “Wait a minute, what’s happening here?”

MF: Finally, Leah, do you think the series gives you more time to explore these characters than a film would?

LSJ: Yeah, it does because trying to fit everything into a two-hour movie, and then say you’re trying to fit everything into an eight-hour-long series if you try to watch it all together, it’s a difference. But I think they are two different types of details that make up the same thing, basically.

  • Trailer for Disney+ Series ‘Percy Jackson and the Olympians’

Sometimes, movies just can’t contain the story when it comes to a novel series adaptation. Such appeared to be the case when 20th Century Fox (in its pre-Disney days) released two films based on Rick Riordan’s ‘Percy Jackson and the Olympians’ books.

Even with Chris Columbus –– who had helped launch the hugely successful ‘Harry Potter’ film franchise –– at the helm of the first, the movies didn’t deliver the way studios and fans had hoped for, and the on-screen version only managed two entries: 2010’s ‘The Lightning Thief’ and 2013’s ‘Sea of Monsters’ (directed by Thor Freudenthal).

Hopes are higher for the TV version which, thanks to Disney buying Fox, finds itself on Disney+, with the sort of budget and, potentially, running time that fans are hoping can do justice to the stories.

Of course, it’ll still have to connect with wider audiences to avoid the creeping trend for streaming services that wipe unsuccessful shows from their servers after a season or two, which is something that has happened with Disney+ as much as any other.

What’s the story of ‘Percy Jackson and the Olympians’?

The new show tells the fantastical story of a 12-year-old modern demigod, Percy Jackson (Walker Scobell of ‘The Adam Project’), who’s just coming to terms with his newfound divine powers when the sky god Zeus (the late Lance Reddick who died shortly after the season wrapped) accuses him of stealing his master lightning bolt.

With help from his friends Grover (Aryan Simhadri) and Annabeth (Leah Jeffries), Percy must embark on an adventure of a lifetime to find it and restore order to Olympus.

Who else stars in ‘Percy Jackson and the Olympians’?

The supporting/guest cast for this one is a strong blend of known names and newcomers including Lin-Manuel Miranda, Megan Mullally, Toby Stephens, Virginia Kull, Jason Mantzoukas, Jay Duplass, Glynn Turman, Adam Copeland, Charlie Bushnell, Dior Goodjohn, Jessica Parker Kennedy, Olivea Morton, Suzanne Cryer, Timm Sharp and Timothy Omundson.

Riordan, who is serving as an executive producer and head writer on the show, seems confident in the new version.

Here’s what he told Entertainment Weekly (in an interview conducted before the start of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes) about the process of bringing the series to life:

“We have been involved in the series since its inception, since the very, very earliest conversations about what a new Percy adaptation might look like, how it would be sketched out, whether it would be episodic. So, I feel comfortable telling fans of the books who have been waiting — in some cases, decades — for this kind of faithful adaptation, that this is the one you’ve been waiting for. We are involved and I think you’re gonna love it.”

‘Percy Jackson and the Olympians’ launches with its first two (of eight) episodes on Disney+ on December 20th.

  • Movie Review: ‘Secret Headquarters’

Walker Scobell as Charlie, Owen Wilson as Jack, Keith L. Williams as Berger, Abby James Witherspoon as Lizzie, and Momona Tamada as Maya in 'Secret Headquarters' from Paramount Pictures.
(L to R) Walker Scobell as Charlie, Owen Wilson as Jack, Keith L. Williams as Berger, Abby James Witherspoon as Lizzie, and Momona Tamada as Maya in ‘Secret Headquarters’ from Paramount Pictures.

The new superhero movie ‘Secret Headquarters,’ which was directed by Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman (‘Project Power’), premieres August 12th on Paramount+.

The movie stars Owen Wilson (‘Wedding Crashers‘) as The Guard, a superhero struggling with finding a way to balance his crime fighting with spending time with his young son, Charlie (Walker Scobell). But when the bad guys attack their home, led by an evil tech-genius (Michael Pena), Charlie discovers his dad’s secret.

While based on an original idea, the movie is basically a mash-up of ‘Iron Man’ and ‘Home Alone,’ and doesn’t offer anything new for the audience. The film tries to explore the complexities of being a superhero and a father, but by the end abandons it for action and cheap laughs.

The movie begins in the past, with Jack (Wilson), his wife (Jessie Mueller), and young son Charlie (Scobell) camping in the woods when they see what looks like a spaceship crash in the distance. Jack goes to help and meets Captain Sean Irons (Jesse Williams), who is with the military and has been tracking the UFO. Both men enter, while a glowing orb suddenly merges with Jack giving him powers.

Owen Wilson stars in Paramount Pictures' 'Secret Headquarters.'
Owen Wilson stars in Paramount Pictures’ ‘Secret Headquarters.’

The opening credits illustrate that Jack becomes the hero The Guard, and that his marriage and relationship with Charlie suffers due to the stress. We then flash-forward ten years to discover that Irons is no longer with the military, and instead working for a tech CEO named Ansel Argon (Pena) trying to locate the source of The Guard’s power.

Meanwhile, with his parents divorced and his father never having time for him, Charlie grows to resent his dad. When Jack suddenly has to leave while Charlie is spending the weekend at his house, Charlie invites his friends over only to discover a secret headquarters under the house. They soon realize that Charlie’s dad is The Guard, and use his power source to create gadgets for themselves.

But the fun is interrupted when Argon and Irons discover the secret headquarters and capture the kids. Now, the kids must defend themselves and the power source until The Guard can arrive, and more importantly, Charlie must come to terms with the truth about his father.

Since the explosion of superhero movies about twenty years ago, with a few exceptions, Marvel and DC have pretty much ruled with decades of characters and stories to utilize. So, creating a brand new superhero universe for a film can be difficult, and I appreciate the filmmakers taking a big swing with ‘Secret Headquarters.’ However, the movie takes too many ideas from existing properties to truly be original.

Owen Wilson as Jack in 'Secret Headquarters' from Paramount Pictures.
Owen Wilson as Jack in ‘Secret Headquarters’ from Paramount Pictures.

The Guard is clearly Iron Man, even down to the symbol on his chest. Jack is basically wearing a super-suit, and the powers are about the same. There is also clearly a reference to Green Lantern, as an alien spacecraft crashing and passing its power on to a worthy human being is the same origin story. There is even a little Batman thrown in there with all the gadgets, cool cars and secret headquarters itself.

You could also make an argument that Michael Pena’s character is basically Lex Luthor, and Captain Irons is his henchman. But about halfway through the film, once Argon and his men have gotten in the house and confront the kids, the movie becomes ‘Home Alone’ with super powers.

Part of the problem with the movie is that there is not enough time to really explore Jack and Charlie’s relationship in a meaningful way. There are a few brief scenes between the two characters at the beginning, but then Jack leaves, and once he returns it becomes all about saving the kids. Even the film’s conclusion doesn’t really address their relationship and how it changed through the course of the movie.

Once the movie goes into ‘Home Alone’ mode, anything it was trying to say about the sacrifices a hero has to make and their complex personal lives is completely abandoned and the movie just becomes silly kid’s stuff. Pena keeps the sequences moving with his over-the-top character and is quite funny throughout.

Owen Wilson is fine as Jack/The Guard, and it was fun seeing the actor finally play a superhero. But he is not in a lot of the film, and we never really see The Guard in full action. It would have been nice to see more of the character’s backstory as a hero, but Wilson gets a few moments of great action towards the end of the movie.

Walker Scobell, who was fantastic in ‘The Adam Project’ stumbles a bit here, creating a whinny brat of a character that you have a hard time rooting for. However, his supporting cast of young actors all shine, creating fully realized and fun characters.

Momona Tamada is excellent as Maya, a strong-willed classmate of Charlie’s, who he has a crush on. Abby James Witherspoon plays Lizzie, a TikTok obsessed pre-teen who has a humorous onscreen relationship with Kezii Curtis’ Big Mac.

One of the funniest young actors in the movie, Curtis’ character is actually named Eugene Burger but goes by Big Mac because as he says, “I’m the tastiest Burger.” Keith L. Williams plays the younger Burger brother and has some funny scenes with Curtis, who’s character goes ballistic when called “Eugene.”

In the end, ‘Secret Headquarters’ is a harmless, family-friendly movie that probably won’t be satisfying for adults or fans of the genre but may entertain your kids.

‘Secret Headquarters’ receives 2.5 out of 5 stars.

  • Owen Wilson and Walker Scobell Talk ‘Secret Headquarters’

Premiering on Paramount+ August 12th is the new original superhero movie ‘Secret Headquarters,’ which was directed by Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman (‘Project Power’).

The movie stars ‘The Adam Project’s Walker Scobell as Charlie Kincaid, who has an estranged relationship with his father (Owen Wilson) due to his busy work schedule. While at his dad’s house, Charlie and his friends discover his dad’s secret headquarters and that he is really the superhero known as The Guard.

But, when an evil tech tycoon (Michael Pena) and his minions invade the secret lair to steal The Guard’s power source, Charlie and his friends will use his dad’s weapons to defend the secret headquarters.

In addition to Scobell, Wilson, and Pena, the cast also includes Jesse Williams, Keith L. Williams, Momona Tamada, Abby James Witherspoon, and Kezii Curtis.

Moviefone recently had the chance to speak with Owen Wilson and Walker Scobell about their work on ‘Secret Headquarters,’ their characters’ relationship, the original screenplay, and what it was like for Wilson to finally play a superhero on screen.

You can read the full interview below or click on the video player above to watch our interviews with Wilson, Scobell, Michael Pena, Jesse Williams, Abby James Witherspoon, and Kezii Curtis.

Moviefone: To begin with, Owen, what was your first reaction to this original superhero screenplay and the opportunity to finally play a superhero on screen yourself?

Owen Wilson: I was excited. I think that the chance to play a superhero, I mean, who isn’t going to be flattered by that opportunity. I think it was done in a realistic way, so it isn’t so much that this is something that my character has really chosen, it’s something that he feels was thrust upon him.

That creates this dynamic between him and his son, Charlie, that’s frustrating for both of them. I think that’s hopefully what makes it a unique superhero story.

MF: Walker, can you talk about how Charlie feels when he discovers his father is really a superhero?

Walker Scobell: Well, normally they forget about why they were mad about their parents in all the other superhero movies and just forgive them, but in this one he gets angrier. Why can’t his dad trust him?

MF: What was it like working with Owen on that father and son relationship?

WS: It was really fun. The first scene we did, we had to play this baseball game on the Nintendo Switch. It was really fun, and we had to eat a bunch of pizza for the scene. That was pretty good bonding for that, I think.

MF: Owen, your character is torn between his responsibility as a hero and his responsibility as a father. Can you talk about that concept and how he deals with it?

OW: I think that’s what attracted me to the script when I first read it and that dynamic between Jack and Charlie. Being able to explore it through this entertaining way where, what if you found out the reason why your dad wasn’t at your baseball game is because he is superhero.

Even if that’s your excuse, and it’s a good excuse, it’s still your kid’s wanting you to be at their baseball game. I think that leads to a funny dynamic between Charlie and me.

MF: Finally, the movie is kind of like ‘Home Alone’ but with superpowers. Charlie, what was it like working with the other young actors on the set?

WS: It was fun. When we weren’t filming, we were running around and checking out all the stuff. There’s a bunch of punching bags and there’s a vending machine, which is kind of sad that it didn’t work because it had a bunch of stuff in it.

But it was really fun to get to work with all the other kids. Because normally I only work with adults, but it was nice to get to work with them because they were all just great.
