    • ‘Fast Forever’ will be with us in 2028.
    • Louis Leterrier will direct the movie.

Like a backfiring jalopy with engine trouble, there have been several frustrating false starts for the next –– and most likely final –– ‘Fast & Furious’ movie.

Despite multiple announcements (including more than one from star, producer and ‘Fast’ cheerleader Vin Diesel) about different dates, budget wrangling and schedule issues have given the potential franchise wrap-up flat tires along the way.

Now, though, it appears that everyone is on the same page (or maybe dirt track?) as both Diesel and studio backers Universal have announced that the new movie, now called ‘Fast Forever’ will be with us in 2028.

What’s the story of ‘Fast Forever’?

Jason Momoa as Dante in ‘Fast X’, directed by Louis Leterrier.

The typically stunt-heavy final minutes of 2023’s ‘Fast X’ show Diesel’s Dom Toretto driving down the side of a dam and into the water below, as he and his son, Little Brian (Leo Abelo Perry), race to escape a trap set by the villainous Dante (Jason Momoa), who arms a series of bombs. Then the movie cuts to black.

Two credit scenes follow, teasing the returns of Dwayne Johnson’s Hobbs and Gal Gadot‘s Gisele.

How will it all resolve? Beyond vehicular chaos and a likely focus on family, not much has been said about the story. Director Louis Leterrier is back to wrap up the two-part finale, which has a script by Christina Hodson (‘Bumblebee’) and Oren Uziel (‘22 Jump Street’).

When will ‘Fast Forever’ be in theaters?

Universal has confirmed that the movie will be screeching into cinemas on March 17, 2028.

    • Vin Diesel is writing the script for the ‘Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots’ movie.
    • Diesel was already aboard to star in and produce the pic.
    • Mattel is backing the movie via its film arm.

Even though it constantly cropped up in slightly joking fashion on lists of other potential toy franchises when board games and more started being adapted in bigger number for movies, Vin Diesel isn’t laughing about ‘Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots.’

The ‘Fast & Furious’ star/driving force has been aboard an adaptation of the pugilistic ‘bots for some time now –– in fact, his involvement was first announced back in 2021 –– but we have an update for you.

    gXkNx38GDhMSfW7XviYfN4

Deadline brings word that Diesel is adding the title of writer to his list of jobs on the movie, which already included starring and producing via his One Race production company.

That’s the big question right now –– nobody really knows outside of Vin and the Mattel Studios team, which has been developing this one.

While the robots –– called Blue Bomber and Red Rocker –– were first on toy shelves way back in 1966, they didn’t come with the most complicated back story.

Still, ‘Rampage’ and ‘The Commuter’s Ryan Engle wrote an original screenplay, which follows a father and son who form an unlikely bond with an advanced war machine.

Whether Diesel plans to start from scratch or use that version as the basis for his script remains to be seen.

    Here’s Vin on the movie:

“I am excited to expand the Mattel universe by bringing this classic toy from my childhood to a modern audience by telling a story that examines the role of competition in a world often measured by strength and dominance that dares to reveal the power of compassion at its core.”

And this is what Robbie Brenner, President of Mattel Studios and Chief Content Officer had to say:

“Vin is a powerhouse storyteller with an unmatched understanding of action, heart, and world-building. His creative vision for ‘Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots’ is bold, human, and deeply cinematic—exactly the kind of storytelling we love at Mattel Studios.”

When will ‘Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots’ be in theaters?

While the movie at one point had Diesel’s ‘Fast’ partners Universal attached, the company appears to have dropped the project. So it’ll take another studio picking it up before we learn an actual date.

    • Michael Caine is making a deal to appear in ‘The Last Witch Hunter 2’.
    • He’d reprise his role as a priest named Dolan.
    • Vin Diesel is back to star.

If you had asked us what would tempt Michael Caine –– who at the age of 90 in 2023 announced his official retirement from acting –– back into the game, we’d probably had guessed a call from Christopher Nolan, with whom Caine has worked several times.

But no… Turns out what really made him want to come back to screens is a sequel to a 2015 Vin Diesel vehicle called ‘The Last Witch Hunter’. Or perhaps just his close friendship with Vin (no, really, Caine thinks the world of Diesel).

    20067551

Either way, Caine is making a deal to return for the sequel, which will once more see Diesel as a warrior committed to ending the evil schemes of (checks notes) oh yes, witches.

What was the story of ‘The Last Witch Hunter’?

Vin DIesel in 'The Last Witch Hunter'. Photo: Lionsgate.
Vin DIesel in ‘The Last Witch Hunter’. Photo: Lionsgate.

The 2015 original, directed by Breck Eisner, saw Diesel as Kaulder, a valiant warrior who back in the past managed to slay the all-powerful Queen Witch, decimating her followers in the process.

In the moments right before her death, the Queen curses Kaulder with her own immortality, forever separating him from his beloved wife and daughter in the afterlife. Today Kaulder is the only one of his kind remaining, and has spent centuries hunting down rogue witches, all the while yearning for his long-lost loved ones.

However, unbeknownst to Kaulder, the Queen Witch is resurrected and seeks revenge on her killer causing an epic battle that will determine the survival of the human race…

Caine in the movie played Dolan, a priest who helps Kaulder on his mission. As for what the sequel will be about, we can guess there will be a fresh witchy threat.

The idea of a sequel is somewhat surprising since the original made $27 million in the States against a $90 million budget. But a healthier take globally and a real second life across the likes of Netflix have spurred Lionsgate to develop a follow-up.

Here’s studio Motion Picture Group chair Adam Fogelson had to say:

“ ‘The Last Witch Hunter’ has grown since its theatrical release into a global fan favorite, with audiences continuing to discover and rewatch it across every platform over the past decade. That enduring enthusiasm made clear there is an appetite for more stories set in this world. Vin and I have partnered many times over the years, and he is a true force in our industry. I’m thrilled to be reuniting with him as he returns to this iconic role, and excited by how advancements in filmmaking technology now allow us to economically deliver a sequel on an even more ambitious scale.”

It’s a bold strategy, Cotton. Let’s see if it pays off.

  • Vin Diesel says Disney wants a Groot Movie

    Preview:

    • Vin Diesel says there’s a chance of a ‘Guardians’ spin-off featuring Groot.
    • He also makes mention of the campaign to film the final ‘Fast’ movie in Los Angeles.
    • The actor teased other projects he’s working on.

Vin Diesel is not a man to let a chance to show you what he’s excited about go to waste, especially when it comes to work projects. Like his good friend –– or is it still frenemy? –– Dwayne Johnson, Diesel is fond of hitting social media to tease projects that may or may not end up on our screens.

He was at it again recently on Instagram, touching on the fact that the opening montage of this year’s Oscars featured footage from ‘Furious 7’ as part of its tribute to movies shot in Los Angeles.

But looking back was only part of the post, and Diesel was mostly about dropping hints about what fans can look forward to from him.

    View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Vin Diesel (@vindiesel)

Prime among them –– according to Diesel, at least, since there has been zero official word from either Disney or Marvel, is the chance of a movie focused on the living tree creature Groot, as featured in the ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ movies and who has popped up alongside his teammates elsewhere in the MCU, including ‘Avengers’ films and ‘Thor: Love & Thunder.’

This is what Diesel had to say about the possibility:

“Disney wants their Planet X! Which some say is Marvel’s most anticipated movie, haha. The film where Groot returns to his home planet.”

Whether or not we actually see this happen remains to be seen; after all, Marvel is more focused on building to the new ‘Avengers’ movies and other projects.

After all, Groot got his spin-off, in the form of animated series ‘I am Groot’ on Disney+.

So let’s dig into what else Diesel has cooking, starting with the latest in the ‘Riddick’ franchise that began with ‘Pitch Black’ way back in 2000, and sees the actor as tough guy alien Richard B. Riddick.

In the new movie, Riddick finally returns to his home world, a place he barely remembers and one he fears might be left in ruins. But there, he finds other Furyans fighting for their existence against a new monster — and some of these Furyans are more like Riddick than he could have ever imagined.

    Who is making ‘Riddick: Furya’?

Returning for the new movie is writer/director David Twohy, who has overseen all the entries so far. He’ll also produce the film alongside Diesel and his One Race company, while Rocket Science is representing the rights to the film internationally (and has already hatched several deals).

What else is Diesel working on?

Vin Diesel as Kaulder in 2015's 'The Last Witch Hunter.' Photo: Lionsgate.
Vin Diesel as Kaulder in 2015’s ‘The Last Witch Hunter.’ Photo: Lionsgate.

In addition to the new ‘Riddick’ outing, there are a number of projects vying for Diesel’s attention. He’s attached to star in an adaptation of Mattel game property ‘Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots’, a cinematic take on TV detective drama ‘Kojak’ and a new entry for extreme sports-loving hero Xander Cage in another potential ‘xXx’ outing.

And not forgetting a nod towards a rumored follow-up to 2015’s ‘The Last Witch Hunter,’ which despite making only $147 million from a $90 million budget, is still a possibly exploitable chunk of IP for Lionsgate, and with Diesel’s name attached, may end up spawning a new adventure.

The references to New York and directing, meanwhile, point to him finally making the aforementioned ‘Kojak’ movie happen.

    YRSYLOAnBK3LoNJ9byFTg2

And what about the next ‘Fast & Furious’ outing?

Vin Diesel as Dom in 'Fast X,' directed by Louis Leterrier. Photo: Universal Pictures.

Prime in both studio minds and sporting the biggest fan base, of course, is the long-running ‘Fast & Furious’ franchise, which last released ‘Fast X’ in 2023, and ended with a cliff-hanger touting the return of the characters for ‘Fast X: Part 2.’

    QQzr1mlNX9taNeEHrC9Cs3

Yet despite apparent momentum and a director attached (Louis Leterrier is back in the driver’s seat), it has seemingly stalled since then.

The one recent development is Diesel dropping word that co-star Jordana Brewster had urged him to move filming of the apparent final ‘Fast’ movie back to where it began, in Los Angeles.

Here’s what Diesel had to say:

“Los Angeles is where ‘Fast and Furious’ started filming 25 years ago… And now Fast will finally return home.”

In his more recent post, he mentions that he’s still fighting for that to happen. Naturally, there are financial considerations, but given how much Universal has spent on the movies so far, we imagine there’s going to be some movement in the near future.

When will any of these projects hit screens?

With most of the titles still in development, your guess is as good as ours in terms of release dates.

Riddick: Furya’ appears to be on the right track, listed as filming on the IMDb, so that should see the light of day (or maybe a dark night would be more fitting?)

And we know that Universal wants to keep the ‘Fast & Furious’ motor running, so that should be cranking cameras this summer, whether it ends up in Los Angeles or some other locale(s).

Let’s get hooked on a feeling one more time with the latest installment of the ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ franchise – ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3

The film is set after the events of ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ and ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special’, where we find the band of misfits in their new home on Knowhere. Unexpectedly, a new powerful enemy crashes in and injures Rocket, and if the Guardians don’t act fast enough, it could mean life or death for their teammate.

    k5kA3qeDcQFylAb4AgIbb6

The official synopsis for ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ is below:

“In Marvel Studios ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ our beloved band of misfits are looking a bit different these days. Peter Quill, still reeling from the loss of Gamora, must rally his team around him to defend the universe along with protecting one of their own. A mission that, if not completed successfully, could quite possibly lead to the end of the Guardians as we know them.”

‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ opened in theaters on May 5th, 2023, to $118.4 million domestically and has grossed over $348.5 million since its opening. Worldwide box office earnings have grossed over $825.3 million since its release. This was a highly anticipated film among Marvel fans and is certified Fresh on aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes, with an 82% score from critics and a 94% score from the audience.

Our team of galactic heroes for ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ includes Chris Pratt (‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’) as Peter Quill/Star-Lord, Zoe Saldana (‘Avatar: The Way of Water’) as Gamora, Dave Bautista (‘Knock at the Cabin’) as Drax the Destroyer, Karen Gillan (‘Jumanji: The Next Level’) as Nebula, Pom Klementieff (‘Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One’) as Mantis, Vin Diesel (‘Fast X’) as the voice of Groot, Bradley Cooper (‘A Star Is Born’) as the voice of Rocket, Sean Gunn (‘The Suicide Squad’) as Kraglin, Elizabeth Debicki (‘Tenet’) as Ayesha, and Sylvester Stallone (‘Samaritan’) as Stakgar Ogord. Newcomers to the franchise include Chudwuki Iwuji (‘The Girl Who Got Away’) as The High Evolutionary, Will Poulter (‘We’re the Millers’) as Adam Warlock, Maria Bakalova (‘Borat Subsequent Moviefilm’) as the voice of Cosmo the Dog, and Daniela Melchior (‘Fast X’) as Ura.

The team faces brand new threats in this movie, with the stakes being higher than ever when it involves one of the members of the team. Still recovering from his heartbreak and loss of Gamora, Peter Quill and his band of misfits are settled in on Knowhere when Adam Warlock crashes in.

Adam Warlock has long been teased to appear in the MCU since ‘Thor: Dark World’ and the first ‘Guardians of the Galaxy.’ However, it was in the post-credit scene in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol 2’ that confirmed his appearance. Played by Will Poulter, the MCU’s Adam Warlock origin differs from the comics. Instead of being created by scientists, Adam Warlock in the film is a Sovereign warrior created by the high priestess Ayesha and The High Evolutionary.

The film also introduces The High Evolutionary (played by Chukwudi Iwuji) to the MCU. A geneticist whose personal mission is to create the perfect species, he abducted various creatures for his experiment, with Rocket Raccoon (then named 89P13) being one of his test subjects. When Rocket points out the flaws in The High Evolutionary’s project, it confuses and angers him to the point where he orders Rocket’s brain to be removed so that he can study him.

Rocket manages to escape. Years later, when The High Evolutionary learns of his involvement with the Guardians of the Galaxy, he orders Adam Warlock to retrieve him at all costs.

    Rocket’s Story

When it comes to the Guardians of the Galaxy, we know we’re in for a grand space adventure, with hilarious banter between the Guardians. However, ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ takes on a more somber and emotional tone. With director James Gunn being the co-chairman of DC Studios, this is likely the final film he’ll direct for Marvel. This movie not only wraps up the adventures of the current team of the Guardians, but it also dives into the origin story of Rocket.

Previously named 89P13, Rocket Raccoon is subjected to tests and experiments by The High Evolutionary. In flashback scenes, we meet Rocket’s fellow cagemates Floor, Teefs, and Lylla. The four friends found comfort in each other, often playing games and daydreaming about the “forever and beautiful sky.” The message of animal cruelty is not missed in the film, and what The High Evolutionary does to Rocket and his friends will send a shock through your system and gives you an insight into some of Rocket’s hardened personality.

Though the Guardians tend to bicker with each other, the group has become quite close-knit. Once Rocket’s life is on the line, his friends will stop at nothing to save him, even if it means sacrificing themselves. Rocket is definitely the heart of this story and we suggest you have some tissues on standby when you watch.

The past always has a way of catching up with Dominic Toretto and his gang. This time, someone from Dom’s past shows up in the most unexpected way, putting everyone in danger, including Dom’s son – Little B.

The official synopsis for ‘Fast X’ is below:

“Over many missions and against impossible odds, Dom Toretto and his family have outsmarted and outdriven every foe in their path. Now, they must confront the most lethal opponent they’ve ever faced. Fueled by revenge, a terrifying threat emerges from the shadows of the past to shatter Dom’s world and destroy everything — and everyone — he loves.”

The cast of ‘Fast X’ includes Vin Diesel (‘Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3’), Michelle Rodriguez (‘Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves’), Tyrese Gibson (‘Morbius’), Chris “Ludacris” Bridges (‘2 Fast 2 Furious’), Nathalie Emmanuel (‘Die Hart’), Jason Momoa (‘Aquaman’), Jordana Brewster (‘Simulant’), Sung Kang (‘Raya and the Last Dragon’), Helen Mirren (‘Shazam! Also returning to the franchise are Charlize Theron (‘The School For Good and Evil’), John Cena (‘The Suicide Squad’), and Joaquim de Almeida (‘Missing’).

‘Fast X’ premiered in Rome on May 12, 2023. It opened in theaters domestically on May 19th. The film opened to $67 million and has grossed over $676.9 million worldwide since its release.

Trouble always seems to find its way to Dominic Toretto’s doorstep, much like when ‘Fate of the Furious’ villain Cypher (Charlize Theron) shows up at Dom’s home badly injured. She tells Dom of a new threat named Dante, who turns out to be the son of drug lord Herman Reyes. Reyes (Joaquim de Almeida) appeared in ‘Fast Five’ and met his end after chasing Dom’s team for the vault.

Played by Jason Momoa, Dante seeks revenge for his father’s death and will stop at nothing to hurt Dom – including kidnapping his son Brian. Dante may be the franchise’s most interesting and formidable villain so far – outsmarting Dom in ways we’ve never seen before. Fashionable, unhinged, and outright entertaining to watch, Dante steals every scene he is in.

With ‘Fast X’ now on its way past $600 million worldwide at top speed after a little less than a month on release, ‘Fast’ star/producer/PR maven Vin Diesel has taken to Instagram to thank fans and remind us all that this is just the first of what is planned as at least two, and as recently rumored by Vin himself, three movies. He announced that Part 2 will drive into theaters on April 4th, 2025.

    PeUoT2JG3jB1iiHmbfYgB2

That’s a big statement right now, since the ongoing writers’ strike means that films such as this are being delayed all over the place as scripts can’t be finished –– not that ‘Fast’ films’ strength is usually in the written word, but those stunt sequences don’t (usually) create themselves.

Louis Leterrier, who stepped into take over ‘Fast X’ after Justin Lin departed the project early in shooting is back to direct the next one.

    https://www.instagram.com/p/CtQAuTuJxDK/

What’s the story of the next ‘Fast’ movie?

With that script at an early stage (we’re fairly sure the team would have worked out a few elements before committing to two, and possibly three-film structure), it’s tough to say exactly what will happen.

What we do know –– spoiler alert for anyone who has not watched ‘Fast X’ –– is that the new movie will need to resolve the various cliffhangers of the most recent film, including the fate of Roman (Tyrese Gibson), Tej (Ludacris) and Ramsey (Nathalie Emmanuel), last seen on a plane that crashed to the ground and Diesel’s Dom Toretto, trying to escape the watery nightmare unleashed by Dante (Jason Momoa).

Yet perhaps more interesting in Diesel’s latest social media pronouncement is his praise for Momoa, who plays the flamboyant, vengeful villain in the latest film.

Following chatter that Diesel had been unhappy with how over the top Momoa took the character, worried it had hurt reactions (even though many reviews praised it), it now appears he’s more quickly looking to put out cyber-fires. “I love how expressive and collaborative all of the actors in our franchise feel coming into the World’s Saga,” he says. “Jason wanted to try something totally unique and special and ended up creating a scene stealing character that the world won’t forget.”

Note the use of the phrase “the world’s saga” –– never one for understatement, our Vin.

This brings to mind his beef with Dwayne Johnson, which both actors are now trying to say has been squashed, with The Rock taking to his own social media channels to announce a new solo movie for Luke Hobbs to tie in with the next ‘Fast’ film. The spin-off could arrive next year, but given the ongoing strike, we’ll wait and see.

  • Dwayne Johnson’s Hobbs Starring in New ‘Fast & Furious’ Spin-Off Movie

    'Black Adam's Dwayne Johnson
‘Black Adam’s Dwayne Johnson at CinemaCon 2022. Photos by Eric Charbonneau.

Looks like Dwayne Johnson and Vin Diesel have officially buried the hatchet –– and not in each other’s backs, as some worried they might at the height of their presumed beef.

The Wrap is reporting, since backed up by a video from Johnson himself, that Luke Hobbs, the burly lawman character from several of the ‘Fast & Furious’ entries, and spin-off ‘Hobbs & Shaw’, will be back for another solo entry.

This isn’t the biggest revelation, since –– spoiler alert for anyone who has not seen ‘Fast X’ –– the character was featured in an end-credit coda scene for that film, which saw Hobbs lured into a trap by the villainous Dante, played by Jason Momoa.

    PeUoT2JG3jB1iiHmbfYgB2

And while the scene led most to speculate that it meant Hobbs would be back for the next entry (three are rumored as a finale trilogy), it appears he’ll be pulling double duty and doing both the new spin-off and that next movie. We’ll wait and see quite how well the Rock/Vin dynamic has been repaired before guaranteeing he’ll rejoin the team fully.

What happened between The Rock and Vin Diesel?

Debates still rage as to whether the falling out between Johnson and Diesel was a legitimate argument or a manufactured rivalry designed (successfully) to generate press on the matter.

The two actors clashed while working together on previous ‘Fast & Furious’ movies, with Johnson taking issue with Diesel’s work ethic. The feud between the two stars escalated in 2021 when Diesel used his personal social media channels to publicly ask Johnson to reconsider his decision to leave.

Johnson, annoyed by the tactic, made his own public statement that he would not be returning to the franchise, an announcement since belied (again, spoiler alert) by his brief moment at the end of ‘Fast X’ and now this new film.

What do we know about the new movie?

Very little is known about the new movie right now, besides the presence of Johnson in the lead and regular ‘Fast’ veteran writer Chris Morgan on script duty (we can picture him already hard at work on ridiculously macho dialogue and the number of ways that cars/buildings/giraffes can explode. Okay, probably not giraffes).

There’s no sign of Jason Statham’s Deckard Shaw (the other half of ‘Hobbs & Shaw’) in the announcement, so for now we presume he won’t appear beyond a potential cameo.

There certainly seems to be more momentum around the franchise after the ninth seemed to suffer a combination of franchise fatigue and pandemic-influence nerves about going to the cinema.

‘Fast X’ opened No. 1 around the world earlier this month with $320 million and became the second biggest global opening of 2023. The film opened No. 1 in all markets where it was released, including China, and crossed $500 million in its second weekend.

Whether it ends up called ‘Fast X Part II’, the next main entry is gearing up with returning director Louis Leterrier for a potential 2025 release date.

Fast X’ opening in theaters on May 19th, is the latest entry in the sprawling, wildly successful franchise that begun in much more humble fashion as a take on ‘Point Break’s undercover lawman genre in 2001 and his since spiraled into a bombastic action franchise revolving around the endlessly repeated theme of family.

After a muted, disappointing entry with ‘F9: The Fast Saga’ in 2021 (which nevertheless did good business), it’s a relief to report that fans of the franchise, led by star/producer Vin Diesel, is a return to the ridiculous, stunt-heavy, common sense-free form that we’ve come know and appreciate.

What’s the story of ‘Fast X?

Dominic Toretto (Diesel) is back living in the family home in Los Angeles with wife Letty (Michelle Rodriguez) and son Brian (Leo Abelo Perry). It’s a relatively quiet time for Dom and his gang, punctuated by family barbecues, driving lessons for Brian and a visit from his Abuela (Rita Moreno).

But Dom’s peace is ruined when old enemy Cipher (Charlize Theron) shows up badly injured at his door one night, spinning a story of a new threat called Dante (Jason Momoa). He, it turns out, is the son of Hernan Reyes (Joaquim de Almeida), the drug kingpin that Dom and his team robbed and killed 10 years ago in Rio (as chronicled in the events of ‘Fast Five’ in 2011).

Soon, the flamboyant, crazed Dante is setting traps for our heroes, including luring Roman (Tyrese Gibson), Tej (Ludacris), Ramsey (Nathalie Emmanuel) and Han (Sung Kang) on a fake mission to Rome where they and others, including spy agency member Little Nobody (Scott Eastwood) must stop a giant, rolling bomb from destroying parts of Rome and the Vatican.

But when they’re all framed for the attack, the “family” is scattered to various parts of the world as Dante schemes and undermines them, stealing all their money and threatening their own family members.

Soon Dom is locked in a frantic battle with Dante, forced to rely on everyone he loves, even as they’re put in mortal danger. Can he succeed against this powerful villain?

    What works about ‘Fast X’

To put it bluntly, there are two main advantages to the new ‘Fast’ movie, and the biggest is easily Jason Momoa. Clearly understanding that he A) needs to bring some fun and B) have some fun in the role of the big bad, he’s the most entertaining villain, and possibly the most entertaining character, the franchise has had for a long time.

Extravagantly dressed, free of macho impulses and always ready with a quip, he’s a giant breath of fresh air that nevertheless also feels like a real challenge to Dom and co. Even his mantra of, “Never accept death when suffering is owed,” inherited from his late father (who is glimpsed in an opening blend of footage from ‘Fast Five’ and newly created shots) helps to justify why Dom and company usually tend to escape from their adventures all but unscathed. You might still find yourself shouting, “why don’t you just kill [insert name here]??” at various points, but that’s all part of the fun of the franchise.

And let’s be honest: people “die” in this movie series and have returned before (Han in particular). It’s rarely the end it might be elsewhere.

While there were real concerns after ‘F9’ felt like a tired retread of the usual tropes, a sign the movies are running out of gas, ‘Fast X’ actually comes across as a second wind, embracing the set piece silliness and leaning into the entertainment value. Aside from Momoa, it also succeeds by letting Cena embrace his more humorous side since switching sides from being the vengeful villain in the previous entry.

An early briefing for a new character lets the franchise poke proper fun at itself, nodding towards the physics-defying action and globe-trotting story. It’s a canny way to catch up anyone who has decided to make this their first ‘Fast’ movie (though it’s hard to imagine anyone rocking up to these films without having seen at least one other).

Plus, new director Louis Leterrier (who replaced veteran Justin Lin after the latter quit one week into production) is something of a revelation, bringing a combo of his ease with the sort of high-concept action where he started his career (such as ‘The Transporter’) and finding the emotional core these films need to work.

What are the problems of the movie?

For all its advantages, there are also the usually clunky elements, this entry still boasting scenes that make it seem as though a straight-to-DVD B-movie broke out in the middle of a summer blockbuster.

Actors who have won Oscars struggle with dialogue that would trip any actor up, whole moments sounding like they were written by feeding to suggestions to a ChatGPT AI that was then dropped on its hard drive, so leaden and first base are the results. It’s especially glaring for any scenes set in the mysterious “agency” spy division currently run by Ritchson’s Aimes. The man who is Jack Reacher on TV doesn’t break free of the dodgy lines he’s handed. And even Larson can’t make Tess work beyond some basic motivations.

And Diesel, despite being the core of the film, remains the one who treats it all so completely seriously that it’s actually less fun when he’s growling and putting the pedal to the metal.

Even as the movie acknowledges its own ridiculous nature, you’ll end up giggling at how many times the word “family” is uttered as usual, and the number of familial connections between characters is becoming ever more ridiculous. Everyone Dom knows at this point is connected to someone else in the franchise. It’s not hard to imagine him running into someone at the local auto parts store who is a long-lost cousin.

Fortunately, ‘Fast X’ is nimbler than ‘F9’ and papers over some of these typical cracks with gusto .
