It’s never too early for Halloween. Universal Studios is already making plans for the fall holiday, and scares are definitely on the way.

This year, Universal Studios’ annual Halloween Horror Nights event will include crazed klowns. Both Universal Orlando Resort and Universal Studios Hollywood will offer spooky mazes inspired by the 1988 horror flick “Killer Klowns from Outer Space” from director Stephen Chiodo. The mazes will bring guests into the small town of Crescent Cove, where they’ll get a close and chilling look at the clown-like aliens and their frightening behavior.

These mazes aren’t for the faint of heart. Universal teased that they’ll include “the most twisted scenes and ghastly gags from the popular horror sci-fi film.” Just look at the teaser, below:

Halloween Horror Nights starts on Friday, Sept. 6 in Orlando and the following week in Hollywood. It’ll be held on select nights, and tickets are available for purchase online.

Something strange is coming to Universal’s “Halloween Horror Nights” neighborhood.

For the first time ever, “Ghostbusters” will be featured at the attraction at Universal Studios Hollywood and Universal Orlando Resort. The immersive mazes will incorporate memorable scenes, characters and supernatural spirits from the iconic 1984 movie.

Starting in September,  visitors to the two theme parks can follow in the footsteps of the Ghostbusters — Peter, Ray, Egon and Winston — as they venture through the movie’s famous sets, including the firehouse, New York Public Library and the Temple of Gozer.

Visitors will come face-to-face with an array of paranormal creatures, from the voracious Slimer to the all-powerful Gozer the Gozerian and in its ultimate destructor form — the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man.

“Ghostbusters” celebrates its 35th anniversary this year and a third film is currently filming under director Jason Reitman (son of the original movie’s director Ivan Reitman).

  • Why Universal Studios is Even More Magical at Christmas

Why Universal Studios is Even More Magical at Christmas

    Universal/Wizarding World

Universal Studios Hollywood and Universal Studios Orlando are premiere entertainment destinations that allow you to be transported into your favorite films (and sometimes get to watch them being filmed). But during the holidays, they become even more magical, festooned with decorations and special lighting packages, and enough Christmas cheer that you’d have to be a Grinch to not have a good time (and, yes, he’s around too). We took a trip to both domestic Universal resorts to take in all of the festive offerings, and are happy to report back on all the yuletide-specific adventures they have to offer.

First, let’s start at the east coast resort, Universal Studios Florida. The resort now consists of three theme parks – Universal Studios, Islands of Adventure, and the recently-opened “theme water park” Volcano Bay (sadly, there wasn’t anything Christmas-y going on there). At the main park, we were treated to a wide array of holiday-specific food offerings (including a Grinch-shaped donut that I am happy to report was utterly delicious) and, riding a definite sugar high, got to sample some of the other things that you can do during the holidays. One of the most jaw-dropping is Universal’s Holiday Parade featuring Macy’s, a full-on, Thanksgiving Day-worthy parade that features 30 balloons and floats of your favorite characters and movies, along with hundreds of performers and even an appearance by the big guy himself, Santa Claus. This is one of the greatest theme park parades currently in existence, and the sheer scope and scale of it will leave you dazzled.

Also, in terms of live entertainment, there’s the Mannheim Steamroller, who perform on select dates at Universal Studios at the Music Plaza Stage (the one over by the looping rollercoaster). Because, honestly, what is Christmas without Mannheim Steamroller?

Over at the adjacent Islands of Adventure, there’s even more to enjoy. The big draw at this park is, of course, Christmas in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. While this incorporates elements at both parks (since, as we all know, the Wizarding World has “lands” in each), nothing packs them in like the Magic of Christmas at Hogwarts Castle, an incredibly nifty projection-and-fireworks show that happens nightly at the iconic castle. Using state-of-the-art effects and animation (and backed by John Williams’ unforgettable music), the castle totally transforms, whisking you away to a land of enchantment and majesty. (Make sure you have your hot butterbeer handy.) Elsewhere in the Wizarding World, decorations have been lovingly placed (as if by magic) and the live performances also take on a festive edge, with the Frog Choir and Celestina Warbeck and the Banshees each engaging in holiday favorites. It helps that Hogsmeade, with its snow-topped roofs, already feels very wintery but with these new decorations and experiences, it takes things to a whole different level of immersion. There are also, it should be noted, a lot of really cute, holiday-specific merchandise that you can find, including custom-made Christmas ornaments created specifically for the Wizarding World of Harry Potter.

    Universal

Also at Islands of Adventure, a familiar green fiend will be making himself known as part of the annual Grinchmas at Universal’s Islands of Adventure celebration. This wonderful event takes place every year in the Seuss Landing section of the park and its centerpiece is the Grinchmas Who-liday Spectacular, a live retelling of Dr. Seuss’ classic story, which this year features new sets and new special effects. (But the same moldy old Grinch!) If you just happen to be walking around Seuss Landing, you could also just run into the Grinch or some of the amiable Whos from Who-ville. If you want to up your odds of interacting with these fantastical characters, you might want to book a special, ticketed breakfast that happens on select dates at the Circus McGurkus Café Stoo-pendous. Yes, that’s what it’s called. Deal with it.

Now, we shuttle back to the west coast (as quick as Santa in his sleigh) to check out Universal Studios Hollywood. Universal Studios Hollywood has been in the midst of a transformation, with bigger experiences and bolder improvements to both its attractions (look for a Jurassic World re-theme of the classic Jurassic Park ride next year) and its general infrastructure (like the new shops along the main thoroughfare as you enter the park). And so if you haven’t visited recently, the holidays are a great time. Not only are the decorations out-of-control (like the 60-tall whimsical “Grinchmas” tree (where performers sing on select days and the Minions-supervised mayhem over in Super Silly Fun Land), but Christmas in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter is also showcased on this coast, complete with the projection show. Here’s a tip, too: get there early for the nighttime spectacular, since there isn’t quite as much room as down in Florida, a queue forms outside the land on most nights.

A “Stranger Things” haunted house has fans in a tizzy.

Universal Studios had previously announced that “Stranger Things” would be part of its annual Halloween Horror Nights, but now that the photos are here, excitement has jumped to the next level. The pictures came out on Wednesday, just over a week ahead of the first night, and based on the tweets we’ve seen, “Stranger Things” fans are ready.

First, here are the photos that have people so pumped.

And now, prepare yourself for a wave of excitement.

It looks like Universal Studios had the right idea when it teamed up with Netflix to make this haunted house happen. Halloween Horror Nights will be held at the parks in Orlando, Hollywood, and Singapore on select nights this fall, from Sept. 14 to Nov. 3. There’s bound to be high fan demand, so be sure to get your ticket early!

“Stranger Things” Season 3 is currently in the works and will hit Netflix in 2019.

  • ‘Poltergeist’ Headed to Universal Studios’ Halloween Horror Nights

‘Poltergeist’ Headed to Universal Studios’ Halloween Horror Nights

    Universal

    They’re heeeeeeere.

At this year’s Halloween Horror Nights celebration, at both Universal Studios Orlando and Universal Studios Hollywood, a brand-new maze will debut that’s themed to Tobe Hooper and Steven Spielberg’s immortal haunted house classic “Poltergeist.” And we couldn’t be more excited (we’re already readying our screaming Craig T. Nelson impression).

According to the official press release, these new mazes (the first ever based on the 1982 masterpiece) will being a “living representation of the film will take guests into some of its most iconic scenes and encounter memorable characters that spawned their first true nightmares.” But what can we expect, specifically from this experience? Again, taken from the official press release: “From the underground graveyard to ghostly apparitions, guests will come face to face with infamous scenes from the film including the iconic flickering TV screen, menacing Beast from beyond and pool filled with floating corpses. As guests cross into the ‘light,’ they will find themselves surrounded by a surreal landscape of vanishing walls, floating furniture and a creepy clown with a menacing smile.” Yes.

Halloween Horror Nights at Universal has become a yearly highlight for horror junkies and cinema enthusiasts alike. Last year saw a truly jaw-dropping maze dedicated to Stanley Kubrick’s “The Shining” and this year, it sounds like the “Poltergeist” maze will occupy a similar spot – adapted from a beloved favorite, using innovative scare techniques and cutting-edge technology, and truly putting you inside of that very specific, horrifying world.

Halloween Horror Nights begins on both coasts on September 14 (get your tickets here). We’ll be there, doing our best Craig T. Nelson impression.

  • How the DreamWorks Theatre At Universal Studios Hollywood Puts You Inside the Movie

The next DreamWorks Animation feature doesn’t hit theaters until March 1, 2019. That’s when “How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World,” the third film in the beloved franchise, is released; it’s also worth noting that it’s the first DWA movie since “Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie,” which came out way back in the summer of 2017.

But if you need your DreamWorks Animation fix, there’s a brand-new attraction opening at Universal Studios Hollywood this summer that plunges you into one of your favorite animated adventures.

As part of a continued effort to revitalize the theme park, which includes the popular (and very lucrative) Wizarding World of Harry Potter, the DreamWorks Theatre featuring “Kung Fu Panda: The Emperor’s Quest” is set to officially open next week. The past home to the Shrek 4-D attraction, this new state-of-the-art experience is something that is genuinely unlike anything you’ve ever seen before. And we got to experience it early, while taking a behind-the-scenes peek.

If you’ve visited the park and been to Shrek 4-D, you’ll notice some, at least superficial, similarities to that previous attraction (which opened in May 2003 and closed last summer). But virtually everything else has changed.

The show building will remind you of a classic Hollywood studio, and if you’ve ever visited or seen photos of the animation studio’s campus in Glendale, California, you’ll recognize that some things — including the Spanish-style architecture — have been borrowed, too.

After watching a pre-show in which various DreamWorks characters bicker and argue about who will get to star in this brand new experience, one character triumphs: Po from “Kung Fu Panda.” From there, you enter the theater for what John Corfino, the Creative Director at Universal Studios, described to us as “a transformative and immersive experience.” (He also stressed how different the 241-seat theater was from the previous attraction, explaining that the new theater has “a different geometry.”)

The actual ride film follows Po and some of his friends as they track down a mystical artifact that has been stolen. Corfino was cagey about what celebrity voice talent would be returning, although we can confirm no talent returned, so don’t expect to hear Jack Black during the attraction. As you watch the ride film unfold, the action expands, outwardly, until the entire theater is a part of the action. The attraction isn’t 3D, but the seats do have motion and you will feel the wind in your hair and get sprayed with water (of course); Corfino said that in many ways the seats furthest most back are the very best, since you can survey everything that is happening, all around you.

But what magic allows, say, Po to climb out of the screen and into another part of the theater? Two words: projection mapping.

Now, the basic technology behind projection mapping has been around for a while, and in recent years has become a favorite for theme park projects, where its been utilized for everything from nighttime spectaculars to more articulate faces for audio-animatronic figures. But this is the first time it’s been used like this in a theater setting. Corfino said that there was a lot of trial and error, with testing to figure out what shape the theater could be for the effect to work. 3D was considered for the attraction but they wanted people to look around the theater more organically. “Embrace the peripheral potential” is the phrase he used.

And while we didn’t see the finished product (it was still being tested); the experience of watching the ride film unfold (and we mean that literally) is incredibly thrilling. It’s one thing to just be seated in front of a screen, it’s another thing to watch the characters and action spill out into the physical environment around you. Quite frankly, it really does make you feel like you’re inside a DreamWorks Animation movie, with all of the zany humor, sight gags, and subtle nods that you’d expect.

When the attraction opens next week, visitors to Universal Hollywood are going to get a truly animated experience.

  • An ‘American Horror Story’ Attraction Is Coming to Universal Studios This Halloween

“American Horror Story” will now be able to scare you both on television and in real life, thanks to a new attraction set to open at Universal Studios this Halloween season.

The series is set to be featured as part of Universal’s annual Halloween Horror Nights event, and will lend three chapters of its anthology to a new set of “AHS”-themed mazes. Here’s how The Hollywood Reporter explains the attraction:

Guests will have the chance to be residents of AHS’ first installment, Murder House, and visit with the tortured performers from the fourth installment’s Freak Show and victims of the otherworldly Hotel from the fifth installment. As they venture through the mazes, visitors will encounter iconic scenes and memorable characters from the series, including Freak Show’s murderous Twisty the Clown.

According to Universal Studios Hollywood creative director John Murdy, fans have been asking the park to include “AHS” in the Horror Nights lineup for years, and this year, the higher-ups finally obliged. And as THR notes, if things go well, there’s potential for an “AHS” attraction to become a permanent staple of the Universal park system, just like fellow television show and previous Horror Nights participant “The Walking Dead,” which just opened its own attraction earlier this year.

“‘American Horror Story’ is one of the most disturbing television shows ever produced, and with such perverse storylines unfolding with each installment, Halloween Horror Nights is undoubtedly the only place that could create a living version of the nightmares that Ryan Murphy dreams up,” Murdy’s statement said.

Halloween Horror Nights begin at both Universal Studios Hollywood and Universal Orlando Resort on September 16.

  • ‘Harry Potter’ Fans Create Alan Rickman Memorial at Platform 9 3/4, Universal Studios

"A Little Chaos" New York PremiereMoviegoers have been mourning the sudden loss of Alan Rickman, who died on Thursday at age 69 after a private battle with cancer. While the beloved actor was known for numerous roles throughout his long and varied career, his turn as Professor Severus Snape in the “Harry Potter” saga will always remain one of his most iconic, and fans of the series are remembering him in their own unique way.

Potterheads have created several makeshift memorials to Rickman over the past 24 hours, including one at Platform 9 3/4 at Kings Cross Station in London, the site where students boarded the Hogwarts Express in the books and films. Fans have left flowers (a lot of lilies, naturally), cards, handmade signs, and photographs, and even a couple green scarves to represent Slytherin House, which Snape headed in the series.

    Always. #platform934 #rip

A photo posted by @karwinsussecks on

That love for Rickman has spread to the States as well, with several displays of support popping up at Harry Potter World at Universal Studios Orlando, too. On Thursday, a group of fans raised their wands there in memory of Rickman (and we imagine many more similar gatherings will occur there throughout the next few days and weeks). And one park employee left a simple and sweet tribute to the actor outside the Potions Classroom portion of the attraction: A single lily, in honor of Snape’s everlasting love for Harry’s mother, Lily Potter.

Excuse us, we have something in our eyes. We miss you Alan. Always.

  • Wizarding World of Harry Potter Hollywood Sets April Opening Date

The Wizarding World Of Harry Potter Kick Off Celebration At Universal Studios FloridaMuggles were overjoyed this summer when a new location for The Wizarding World of Harry Potter was announced at Universal Studios Hollywood. Now, that expansion project officially has an opening date — and it’s coming up a lot sooner than we thought.

USA Today reports that the new attraction, which will recreate the village of Hogsmeade and Hogwarts Castle, is set to open on April 17, 2016. Construction crews must have been using some serious magic, since the project will have been completed less than a year after it was first announced back in June.

But the condensed timeline doesn’t mean that the park has skimped on the details. According to USA Today, there will be plenty of eye-popping “Potter” goodies throughout the attraction, including eight fully-functioning shops in the Hogsmeade attraction alone. Memorable magical businesses including Honeydukes candy store, Ollivanders Wand Shop, and Zonko’s Joke Shop will all make an appearance, as will the Hog’s Head Pub, where guests can imbibe on Butterbeer (and real beer, too, for adult patrons).

The attraction will also include the Flight of the Hippogriff roller coaster on the outskirts of Hogsmeade, as well as the Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey ride (presented for the first time in 3D HD), which will sit inside Hogwarts Castle.

“It’s a spectacle, iconic,” said Alan Gilmore, supervising art director for the “Harry Potter” film series, of the castle, telling USA Today, “the main storytelling location in ‘Harry Potter’ is now the most amazing castle in Los Angeles.”

Judging by what we’ve seen so far, we’re inclined to agree. Accio yourself a plane ticket — or a Nimbus 2000 — and book your spot in line soon.

  • Universal Studios’ ‘Skull Island: Reign of Kong’ Attraction Is Going to Be Huge

Skull Island: Reign of KongKing Kong, the legendary ape who has both fallen for and terrorized Fay Wray, Jessica Lange, and Naomi Watts (to name a few), has long been a staple of Universal Studios theme parks. There’s the King Kong Encounter, a section of Universal Hollywood’s tram tour starting in 1986, the updated version of this experience that debuted at Universal Studios Orlando when the park opened in 1990, plus the recent King Kong 360 3D (once again at Universal Studios Hollywood), that replaced the old Kong section of the tour. Kong has certainly been King, at least at Universal Studios.

So it’s not that big of a surprise that Universal announced an immersive new Kong experience, slated to open in the summer of 2016, called “Skull Island: Reign of Kong.” This huge experience, which will supposedly be one of the longest and most intense attractions in the entire Universal Orlando complex, allows guests to, for the first time, visit Kong on his native turf: the terrifying Skull Island. If you’ve seen any of the movies, you know what this undoubtedly entails: dinosaurs running amok, giant insects and other creepy crawlies, and Kong himself, the king of it all. Guests will board large expedition trucks, tasked with cataloging the island’s vast array of creatures. Things, somewhat predictably, will go horribly wrong.

Just how wrong? We spoke with Mike West, Executive Producer at Universal Creative, about what guests can expect when entering the spooky world of Kong next summer, what it was like working with Peter Jackson on the project, and why the ride will be housed in Islands of Adventure (over by the Jurassic Park ride) as opposed to Universal Studios proper.

Moviefone: There was obviously a King Kong ride in Orlando before and there’s still one in California. So my question is: why circle back to King Kong?

Mike West: It was kind of like why not? Well, there’s a couple of things: we’re getting ready to celebrate our 25th anniversary at Universal Orlando Resort. And King Kong has been such a rich part of Universal’s history from movies to theme park attractions and they’ve always been great stories in the past. We thought that this gave us the opportunity to tell a new Kong story to a whole new generation, in a completely different way, by having you go to Kong’s home instead of having Kong come to the United States.Skull Island: Reign of Kong entranceWhat from the 3D experience at Universal Studios Hollywood either inspired or informed this new ride and what you’re doing to push that technology forward?

Well, it’s really a vastly different ride than King Kong 360 3D. We’re taking guests to the physical, thematic environment of Skull Island, whereas in Hollywood it’s really about the movie-making process. You’re watching monitors and you’re on the tram and you’re going in and it’s got the cut and action. It’s all very segmented. We’ve gone in and actually created Skull Island. It’s not about a movie. The story is a story all to its own. It really has no relation to the Peter Jackson 2005 and is in no ways a prequel to the 2017 film. It’s its own piece, which is really exciting.

Can you talk about the ride system? The promotional artwork shows a large jeep-type vehicle.

Yeah I can talk about the story… The detail of the technology and the ride systems we’ll get into detail with a little bit down the road. But the guest experience entails a rather extensive queue that goes right up the boarding of the vehicles. And when guests come onto the island, they go through a rather dense jungle area, which gives way to some rather complex ancient ruins and that gives you a peek at some of the hostile natives who are on the island, you hear some cryptic messages that reference some of the unimaginable creatures you’re going to encounter on this rather perilous journey. So by the time you get ready to board the trucks, your senses are tingling and you’re ready for a very thrilling adventure. For once it’s not the thing where you are on the ride and something goes horribly wrong; you know from the very beginning that things aren’t going to go right.Skull Island: Reign of Kong jeep encounterIt’s wrong from the beginning.

Yes. You board the rather large expedition trucks and then part of the ride system is that the outside part is inside. One of the key pieces of key art that you got sent shows the expedition truck approaching the great wall, which is going to be the face of the attraction. It’s 72-feet wide and is really impressive; as you approach flames shoot up and huge wooden doors open up and you drive up in between these doors and things get darker and more mysterious at that point. Your charge, when you go onto this, is that you’re charged with going on and researching and collecting some specimens of unknown origin, which of course carpet this island. But it quickly turns into a fight for survival. The creatures get bigger and badder and eventually you come face-to-face with big Kong himself.

So you do encounter other creatures from King Kong?

Oh yes… all of the creatures that inhabit Skull Island.

Can you talk about working with Peter Jackson? Was this a similar situation to what it was like working with J.K. Rowling on the Harry Potter projects?

We worked with Peter on the initial development, working with him on the feel and the level of immersion of the island and how to get guests involved. Because you’re in this truck, you play a role in the story of Kong, which is another new experience for guests. You’re not passively sitting and watching him.

Things seem to move pretty fast at Universal. We started seeing the Kong building go up this year, and next summer it has an opening date. How do things move this quickly?

Well, thank you for saying quickly. Others might not agree with that. But I think it has a lot to do with the process and the way we approach things. We really try to establish a strong storyline first and once you let that be the driving force first, and as long as whatever you’re doing supports that story, you can move forward at a pretty good clip.

Why Islands of Adventure for this new ride?

Well, for one thing there was a large area of Islands of Adventure that had nothing on it. It seemed like a good spot. And again, if you go back and think of past Kong experiences, where it was really New York-based, this is really going to his shores, to his land. It just felt like a better location to the studios, because it would skew it back more to a film-type feel. We didn’t want it to feel like that. We wanted it to feel like an experience on its own.

Will there be other experiences in this new Skull Island section of the park?

It kind of defies categorization. We have never really designed something like this, where the attraction is really something in and unto itself. And because it’s Skull Island, because it’s Kong, it’s got the stature and the size to be established as its own locale.

“Skull Island: Reign of Kong” opens at Universal Studios Orlando in Summer 2016.
