    • Universal made its big presentation to the 2026 CinemaCon crowd.
    • Among the movies promoted were ‘Disclosure Day’ and ‘The Odyssey’.
    • There was also a look at ‘Minions & Monsters’ and ‘Other Mommy’.

Universal had a more muted and mixed 2025 than some other studios –– the latest ‘Jurassic World’ outing was a hit, but other titles, including thriller sequel ‘M3GAN 2.0’ stumbled.

Can it regain its mojo? ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’s success as certainly helped, and it does at least have some heavy hitters on deck, including Steven Spielberg with sci-fi pic ‘Disclosure Day’ and Christopher Nolan’s much-anticipated epic ‘The Odyssey’.

Beyond those two biggies, we can expect the usual blend of family fare (including ‘Minions & Monsters’, the latest extension of the ‘Despicable Me’ franchise) and comedies such as ‘Focker In-Law’.

Before the full presentation kicked off, Snoop Dogg took the stage to confirm that the biopic based on his career will start filming this summer, directed by Craig Brewer and starring Jonathan Daviss.

    Here’s what was revealed…

    The Odyssey

Christopher Nolan’s epic, based on Homer’s story, was somewhat naturally the first big movie featured. Starring half of Hollywood, it promises to be massive in scale and ambitious in scope.

The filmmaker himself took the stage to talk up his latest, joking that he’s glad he doesn’t have to follow Steven Spielberg. ‘The Odyssey’ is not, he says a story. It’s THE story, one he knew he had to shoot entirely in IMAX.

He praised his ensemble, especially Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway and Tom Holland, who he called the heart of the film. Oh, and it was a “nightmare to make in the best way possible,” but he’s nearly finished.

More than five minutes of new footage from the movie was shown, including a shipwrecked Odysseus (Damon) washing up on a shore, where he’s greeted by the goddess Calypso, played by Charlize Theron, asking her about his past life which he cannot remember, and a battle from the Trojan war and the iconic Trojan Horse.

Illumination has been a consistent performer for Universal, its animated output boosting studio coffers. So of course the team were present to pimp the next ‘Minions’ movie featuring the little yellow troublemakers.

It’s set in the 1920s and features the Minions trying to find a new master to serve. Pierre Coffin, who co-writes, directs and voices the creatures, told the crowd that he put everything into the new one, before introducing some fresh footage.

The initial teaser for the horror movie, starring Jessica Chastain, was shown. It features Bela (Arabella Olivia Clark), an 8-year-old girl living in a home with marital problems, confronts a sinister entity that comes out of her closet. The presence, whom she calls “Other Mommy,” becomes increasingly threatening to her and her family.

Getting more of a spotlight was the new ‘Meet the Parents’ outing, which sees Ariana Grande as a young woman looking to marry into Ben Stiller‘s family (and Stiller’s Greg Focker is suspicious of her).

Stiller and Robert De Niro took the stage to introduce a first look, with De Niro commenting that Grande is the funniest scene partner he’s ever had. Ouch!

‘Disclosure Day’s Colman Domingo arrived on stage to introduce his director, Steven Spielberg, who is getting a special award from CinemaCon (along with a sizzle reel of past work and a standing ovation from the audience).

His latest, an alien-inflected sci-fi thriller starring Emily Blunt, Josh O’Connor and Domingo.

The iconic filmmaker took the chance to argue for longer release windows, which naturally plays well with this crowd.

He also sat down with Domingo to discuss his own movie-watching history, his father’s belief in life beyond our world, his own thoughts on aliens and his time making this latest effort.

New footage was shown (though Spielberg said he was keeping every frame of the third act withheld until the movie itself is released), with plenty of tense action.

“It is an experience, this movie,” Spielberg promised. “All you need to get from the beginning to the end is a seat belt.”

Coming to theaters on April 1, ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie‘ is a follow-up to the box office hit, ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie‘, and is based on the 2007 video game Super Mario Galaxy and its 2010 sequel. The film features the returning voices of Chris Pratt as Mario, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, and Anya Taylor-Joy as Peach.

Mario and Luigi are back with a few new friends in ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’. It doesn’t take long to realize that this sequel is even better than the first movie, which felt like more of a set-up than anything else. There are infinite worlds and characters to explore now, and with the addition of fan favorites Rosalina, Yoshi, and Bowser Jr., things have been leveled up.

The Lumas in Nintendo and Illumination’s 'The Super Mario Galaxy Movie', directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic.

Everything seems better this time around, which isn’t to say ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ wasn’t good, because it was, but this time Illumination knows what they are doing and they lean into it. Now that viewers know these characters, they can deliver more action, funnier jokes, and a lot of Easter Eggs that fans will love to point out.

    Story and Direction

Rosalina in Nintendo and Illumination’s 'The Super Mario Galaxy Movie', directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic.
Rosalina in Nintendo and Illumination’s ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’, directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic.

When it comes to the story, admittedly, there is not much of one. It is a fairly simple premise, much like the video games. A princess is kidnapped. Chaos ensues. Said princess is rescued. Illumination knows how to keep viewers entertained throughout the film, however, thanks to gorgeous animation, Nintendo Easter Egg cameos and references, and a whole lot of action.

(L to R) Bowser Junior and Bowser in Nintendo and Illumination’s 'The Super Mario Galaxy Movie', directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic.
(L to R) Bowser Junior and Bowser in Nintendo and Illumination’s ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’, directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic.

Thanks to those action sequences, the movie moves very quickly. It never takes a breather or slows down, which makes it the perfect film to take kids to. It is funny and sharp witted, as nearly every joke lands. The story itself is geared towards a younger audience, but gamer parents will be thrilled with all of the references that are packed into it.

    Cast and Performances

(Center) Toad (Keegan-Michael Key) and Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy) in Nintendo and Illumination’s 'The Super Mario Galaxy Movie', directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic.
(Center) Toad (Keegan-Michael Key) and Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy) in Nintendo and Illumination’s ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’, directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic.

Just as with the first film, the cast never feels as if they are doing impressions of the video game characters. They make them their own, which is what helps this movie to work as well as it does. If that was not the case, the voices would get old very quickly, and it would distract from the story and action.

(L to R) Yoshi (Donald Glover) and the Tostarenan in Nintendo and Illumination’s 'The Super Mario Galaxy Movie', directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic.
(L to R) Yoshi (Donald Glover) and the Tostarenan in Nintendo and Illumination’s ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’, directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic.

The new cast members stick to this as well. Honestly, because of all the action and chaos happening, there is not a whole lot of dialogue, and when there is, it is pretty basic. Still, the cast all does a great job making these characters lovable and entertaining for kids and adults alike.

    Final Thoughts

(L to R) Toad (Keegan-Michael Key), Yoshi (Donald Glover) and Luigi (Charlie Day) in Nintendo and Illumination’s 'The Super Mario Galaxy Movie', directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic.
(L to R) Toad (Keegan-Michael Key), Yoshi (Donald Glover) and Luigi (Charlie Day) in Nintendo and Illumination’s ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’, directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic.

There was never a question as to whether or not ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ would end up getting a sequel, and the same is true about a third movie in the trilogy. Considering ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’ not only sets up for more surprises in the end-credit scenes, but is also more entertaining than its predecessor, we shouldn’t have long to wait for the next movie to be announced.

‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’ recieves a score of 78 out of 100.

(L to R) Luigi (Charlie Day), Mario (Chris Pratt), Yoshi (Donald Glover) and Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy) in Nintendo and Illumination’s 'The Super Mario Galaxy Movie', directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic.

Mario ventures into space, exploring cosmic worlds and tackling galactic challenges far from the familiar Mushroom Kingdom.

For those who didn’t grow up in the 1980s or have somehow gotten this far in life not knowing the name Jessica Fletcher, ‘Murder She Wrote’ was a crime procedural drama series that kicked off on CBS in 1984.

It stars Lansbury as Fletcher, a seemingly mild-mannered crime writer who has a penchant for digging into mysteries of all kinds. Working and living primarily in the fictional town of Cabot Cove, Maine, she’s consistently underestimated by police and criminals and ends up solving many murders.

For the new movie, ‘Dumb Money’ duo Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo wrote the screenplay based on the series. Curtis will take on the role as Fletcher, and the tone may tend towards warmly comedic.

What else has Jason Moore directed?

In addition to helping launch the ‘Pitch Perfect’ franchise, Moore has also been behind the camera for movies including ‘Sisters’ and ‘Shotgun Wedding.’

He’s also directed the pilot and served as an executive producer on ‘Elle,’ the upcoming  ‘Legally Blonde’ prequel TV series at Prime Video.

    • Universal wants to keep going to the ‘Wicked’ well.
    • The company is looking at other stories to tell within the land of Oz.
    • No details have been provided yet.

As Universal says “thank goodness” for the success of 2024’s ‘Wicked’ and this year’s follow-up, ‘Wicked: For Good,’ the company already has one eye on the future of the franchise. Even if it all remains clouded in secrecy for now.

Universal Studios’ chief marketing officer Michael Moses said this to Vulture about the potential for more stories set in the land of Oz:

“Because of ‘Wicked’s’ success but also the fanship, we have almost a responsibility to figure out how we can continue in this universe. Have we figured it out yet? No. But there are things underway.”

    pesbpRntTGmaBaUY09OT

So, yes… we can expect more trips to the land of Oz, even if the likes of Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) and Glinda (Ariana Grande) seem unlikely to show up in anything more than cameos.

It’s not just the studio that has been hinting at future ‘Wicked’ ideas in the works.

Stephen Schwartz, the award-winning composer (who pushed to make the story into a stage show years ago and crafted all the songs, including the new entries in ‘For Good’) told the Ankler newsletter that he and Winnie Holzman –– who wrote the book for the musical and co-wrote the screenplay for both movies –– have been conjuring something up themselves.

    Here’s what Schwartz said:

“I think the Glinda and Elphaba story feels complete — but there are other aspects that could be explored. Gregory Maguire, the original ‘Wicked’ novelist, has several books, for example. But there’s another idea that Winnie and I are discussing: not a sequel, but an adjunct. Let me put it that way.”

What shape could a ‘Wicked’ spin-off take?

Jeff Goldblum is The Wizard of Oz in 'Wicked For Good', directed by Jon M. Chu.

While the story of the ‘Wicked’ movies themselves does indeed feel like it has been told, there is no shortage of other material to draw from.

As Schwartz notes, Maguire has written eight sequel novels. His most recent book was published this year and was an Elphaba prequel story titled “Elphie: A Wicked Childhood.” A Glinda prequel is scheduled for 2026.

Universal may well look to television also, with the potential for stories set on the small screen –– and let’s not forget that the company has its theme parks, where there may well be the chance for guests to interact with Ozians to a greater degree now that the movies are such a hit.

Disney has long staked out the five-day Thanksgiving holiday period as prime box office real estate, priming one of its animated movies for release as families are looking for something to watch as part of their celebrations.

And in the case of ‘Zootopia 2,’ the strategy has worked, with the sequel to the 2016 original enjoying a successful first fun, ending up with $156 million for the extended weekend period ($96.8 million from Friday to Sunday).

    ySgIjSYPTLnkhYIvB5lCe4

That puts it just behind last year’s ‘Moana 2’ (which is still the top Thanksgiving grosser) and ahead of other Disney stablemates such as ‘Frozen II.’

In addition to its domestic haul, the new movie earned good reviews and broke some records overseas.

It scored the top opening day of the year to date for an animated title in key markets, including in France, Germany and Italy, an even more impressive feat considering it isn’t a holiday elsewhere, not to to mention a record-setting $272 million in China at a time when Hollywood is worried about the future of the Chinese market.

The movie ended up with a massive $556 million globally to stand as the fourth-biggest opening weekend in history.

‘Wicked: For Good,’ the second part of Jon M. Chu’s ambitious adaptation of the stage musical and Gregory Maguire book that present an alternate look at the storyline from ‘The Wizard of Oz,’ fell 62.2% from its opening weekend, but still put up some impressive numbers.

It crossed the $200 million mark at the domestic box office on Thanksgiving day itself and ended up with a $93 million total at the end of the five-day period, for a $270.4 million total in the States and $393.3 million globally after 10 days on release.

While its reviews and earning power might not have been as rapturous as last year’s first ‘Wicked,’ it’s clearly still enchanting audiences.

Third place went to ‘Now You See Me: Now You Don’t,’ with the latest entry in the magician heist franchise taking $10.1 million across the five days.

In fourth, we find ‘Predator: Badlands’ with $85 million so far domestically since release, ahead of fifth-placed entry ‘The Running Man,’ which truly seems to have run out of steam, ending up with $34 million total in the US so far.

There were few new entries looking to challenge Disney’s dominance of the holiday, but A24 did open whimsical afterlife comedy drama ‘Eternity’ in more than 1,400 theaters, where it took in $5.2 million.

    • A new entry in ‘The Mummy’ franchise is in development.
    • Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are in talks to return to their roles.
    • Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett will direct for Universal.

Back in 1999, Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz delivered a great on-screen partnership as dashing, roguish hero Rick O’Connell and practical English Egyptologist Evelyn Carnahan for ‘The Mummy.’

Fraser returned for two sequels and Weisz for one (more on that below), but since then, fans have wanted to know if they might both be back, given their winning chemistry.

Good news! Per The Hollywood Reporter, Fraser and Weisz are now in talks to return for a third joint outing, this time under the directorial control of Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, the filmmaking duo part of the Radio Silence collective, who made ‘Ready or Not’ and two of the recent ‘Scream’ movies.

What’s the story of ‘The Mummy’?

The original movie, directed by Stephen Sommers, became a big hit, spawning a sequel, 2001’s ‘The Mummy Returns,’ which also represented a big acting break for Dwayne Johnson.

While Fraser returned for 2008’s less-embraced ‘The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor,’ Maria Bello replaced Weisz and Rob Cohen took over directing.

Things went dormant after that (aside from an ill-fated attempt to launch a Classic Monsters Cinematic Universe with the Tom Cruise reboot in 2017, and more recent reports of ‘Evil Dead Rise’s Lee Cronin developing a new take), but the signs and portents are pointing to a return for the original duo.

As for the new movie, it’ll have a script from David Coggeshall (‘The Family Plan’) and while details are mostly being kept in a sarcophagus, the Reporter’s sources are suggesting that it’ll be a sequel that wipes away the events of ‘Tomb of the Dragon Emperor.’ Okay by us!

Where else can we see Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz?

Fraser won an Oscar for 2022’s ‘The Whale’ and will next be seen in heartwarming drama ‘Rental Family,’ which lands in theaters on November 21.

Weisz has recently been seen in the likes of TV’s ‘Dead Ringers’ and Marvel’s ‘Black Widow.’ Coming up, she has TV drama Vladimir (about a woman who becomes obsessed with a coworker) and is aboard new movie ‘Séance on a Wet Afternoon.’

When will the new ‘Mummy’ movie arrive in theaters?

Universal has yet to indicate when this one might make it to screens. But we can’t imagine it before 2027.

Are you ready to go “Back in Time”?

2025 marks the 40th anniversary of one of the most beloved movies of all time, ‘Back to the Future’. Directed by Robert Zemeckis (‘Forrest Gump’) and based on a script he wrote with producer Bob Gale, the classic film stars Michael J. Fox (‘Family Ties’) as Marty McFly and Christopher Lloyd (‘Who Framed Roger Rabbit‘) as Doc Brown.

    13014

To celebrate the anniversary, the film is being re-released in theaters on October 31st in premium formats including IMAX, Dolby Cinema, 4DX and D-Box. To kick off the re-release, a special screening and event was held on October 21st, (which is also the date Marty went back in time), at the Universal Cinema at Universal CityWalk Hollywood.

Moviefone attended the event and had a chance to speak with co-writer and producer Bob Gale about the 40th anniversary of ‘Back to the Future’, creating the rules of time travel, Michael J. Fox’s iconic performance, his instant chemistry with Christopher Lloyd, predicting elements of the future with ‘Back to the Future Part II’, and why there will never be another sequel, remake or reboot of the original.

Screenwriter and producer Bob Gale at the 40th anniversary screening of ‘Back to the Future’.

Moviefone: To begin with, when you first came up with the idea for the film, did you have any idea that the movie would become a cultural phenomenon and that we would be celebrating the 40th anniversary all these years later?

Bob Gale: Well, we must go back 45 years ago because that’s when I got the idea. So, if the me of today went back in time 45 years ago when Bob Zemeckis and I were struggling to write this script and said, “Guess what’s going to be going on in 2025?” Our younger selves would’ve called security and said, “There’s an old man lunatic in here. Get him out of here.”

MF: In my opinion, ‘Back to the Future’ really created the rules for fictional time travel that are still used to this day in films, television and other mediums. Can you talk about creating those rules and do you see ‘Back to the Future’s influence in other media?

BG: Well, we see the influence in other media. There’s no question about it. In fact, in ‘Avengers: Endgame’, they had to specifically say, “Well, that’s not how it works in ‘Back to the Future’.” Then of course they say, “Well, ours is different,” and then it’s the same. So yeah, we were inspired by the 1960 version of ‘The Time Machine’ movie in which you could travel through time but not through space, which is important because you’re always in the same place, whether that physically makes any sense and violates some rules, I don’t know. But that’s the way we decided to do it. We had no idea that the movie was even going to be a hit, much less that we were establishing the rules. But people would say to me, “Well Bob, do you think people are going to understand this?” And I said, “Well, if we can explain time travel so that a 10-year-old can understand it, we should be able to explain just about everything.”

Michael J. Fox in 'Back to the Future'. Photo: Universal Pictures.

MF: It’s well documented that actor Eric Stoltz was originally cast as Marty McFly and eventually replaced by Michael J. Fox. Can you talk about the energy Fox brought to the set and why he was the right actor to play that role? There would be no ‘Back to the Future’ without Michael J. Fox, correct?

BG: Absolutely. We certainly wouldn’t be here if we hadn’t made that casting change. I sincerely do believe that. People often ask me, “What’s your favorite memory of making ‘Back the Future’?” It was the first night that Michael J. Fox came to work because this was a crazy thing for us to do, to fire an actor five and a half weeks after we started shooting with him. I don’t think it’d ever been done before. Maybe in the case of somebody dying, but not like that. People said, “Do these guys know what they’re doing?” Then Michael comes to work, and he steps into the Twin Pines Mall scene. He starts doing the same stuff that we’d done the week before with Eric Stoltz and everybody just said, “Oh my God, that’s Marty McFly. Yeah, that’s the character I envisioned in the script.” So, my God, you’re right. We would not have ‘Back to the Future’ without Michael. The planets totally lined up.

MF: Was his chemistry with Christopher Lloyd obvious from day one?

BG: From day one with everybody. That’s what a great actor can bring to a part is that he can make the actors around him be better. So, he was able to create an interplay with every other character, every other actor. You see it on screen. You absolutely do.

(L to R) Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd in 'Back to the Future'. Photo: Universal Pictures.
(L to R) Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd in ‘Back to the Future’. Photo: Universal Pictures.

MF: This is more of a question about ‘Back to the Future Part II’, but that film predicted a lot of things that have come true including flat screen TVs, video calls, and driverless cars. Is there anything you predicted that came true that surprised you, and do you take credit for any of these inventions?

BG: A lot of things were sort of, “Okay, this is kind of obvious that we’re going this way,” like the flat screen televisions. One thing that I wish we had that we don’t, is food hydrators. How come we don’t have that? It seems like that should be something that we should have, but maybe the technology doesn’t work. Should we have hoverboards? Well, they would be cool, but the orthopedic surgeons would like it a lot. I don’t think we’re going to get those anytime soon. Same thing about flying cars. Every so often you hear, “Oh, we’ve got a new flying car.” But people have enough trouble driving in two dimensions, do we want to give them three? I don’t know.

MF: Finally, is ‘Back to the Future’ untouchable? In the sense that we will never see another sequel, reboot or remake, correct? The film is perfect, and stands on its own, and there could never be another, is that right?

BG: Exactly. We can’t do another. They’ll never be a part four, at least not while Bob and I are alive. We don’t want to do a reboot because how do you do that? People say, “Well, why don’t you do a part four?” “Well, do you want to see a ‘Back to the Future’ movie that doesn’t have Michael J. Fox in it?” Absolutely not. Nobody wants to see that. So that just takes it totally off the table. We’ll leave it the way that it is. We really want to be the guys that said, “Hey, we were able to say creatively, ‘We’ve told the story we want to tell. We’re done.’” People say, “Well, you could make a lot of money if you did another one.” Okay, we’ve already made a lot of money. That’s not a good enough reason to do it. Was there a story that we should tell? If there was, we would’ve told it back in the day. So, we’re going to leave well enough alone. Let the viewers enjoy the ‘Back to the Future’ trilogy for what it is and enjoy it.

    • Austin Butler is in early talks for the new ‘Miami Vice’ movie.
    • Joseph Kosinski is directing.
    • If he does sign on, Butler would join Michael B. Jordan in the film.

Well, we were at least close with our guess.

Some context: you might recall that recently we brought word that Michael B. Jordan was in early talks to play Detective Ricardo Tubbs in ‘F1’ director Joseph Kosinski’s planned new movie based on iconic cop series ‘Miami Vice’.

We speculated then that Glen Powell might take on the role of fellow cop Sonny Crockett, but it appears Kosinski is looking to hire a different young rising star.

Per Variety, Austin Butler, who has been seen in the likes of ‘Elvis,’ ‘Dune: Part Two’ and ‘Caught Stealing’, is in the nascent stages of making his own deal to play Crockett.

‘Miami Vice’ began life in the early 1980s as a TV show created by ‘Hill Street Blues’ writer Anthony Yerkovich, after NBC president Brandon Tartikoff requested a program that combined the style of MTV with a cop series. The result, produced by Michael Mann, starred Don Johnson as Crockett and Philip Michael Thomas as Tubbs, two detectives working undercover in Miami. The show, which ran for five seasons from 1984 to 1990, became known for its groundbreaking visual style, its hip needle drops, and the fashions worn by its characters, arguably revolutionizing the look of TV crime drama for decades to come.

After Mann moved into directing feature films with ‘The Last of the Mohicans,’ ‘Heat,’ and others, he rebooted ‘Miami Vice’ as a 2006 movie starring Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx as Crockett and Tubbs. While not initially a hit with either critics or audiences, the film has since been reappraised and is now considered a cult classic.

Butler is attached to or rumored for a number of upcoming projects, including Mann’s ‘Heat 2’, Don Winslow adaptation ‘City on Fire’ and could end up playing Patrick Bateman for Luca Guadagnino’s new take on ‘American Psycho.’

When will the new ‘Miami Vice’ be on our screens?

It may not be at sweltering Miami city levels just yet, but ‘F1’ director Joseph Kosinski’s development of a new movie based on cult detective series ‘Miami Vice’ is certainly heating up.

The latest rumor? ‘Sinners’ Michael B. Jordan is in early talks to take on the role of detective Ricardo Tubbs, as played in the show by Philip Michael Thomas.

Kosinski will be working from a script written by Eric Warren Singer and Dan Gilroy, and assuming Jordan’s deal comes together (he’s reportedly very interested), the search will intensify for someone to play Tubbs’ partner Sonny Crockett.

Our guess? Glen Powell. But let’s see where things land.

Part of the reason for Jordan’s deal not yet being closed is scheduling; the actor is busy directing and starring in his own new version of an older property –– ‘The Thomas Crown Affair.’
