  • 13 Reasons Why the SAG Awards Should Be Your Favorite Awards Show

20th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards - Show
The Screen Actors Guild Awards, airing this Sunday, January 25, aren’t as high-profile as some of the other awards shows clamoring for your attention throughout January and February. Indeed, awards fatigue from the People’s Choice, Critic’s Choice, and Golden Globes may keep you from watching, or maybe you’re just saving up your red-carpet energy for next month’s Grammys and Oscars.

Still, for sheer entertainment value, it’s hard to beat the SAGs. Like the Globes, they honor celebrities from both TV and film while plying the winners and losers with liquor. Like the Oscars, they’re voted on by actual movie professionals. And like the MTV Movie Awards, they’re often irreverent, mercifully brief, and scheduled to air more than once in case you don’t catch them live. For viewers at home, they offer the best elements of all awards shows and none of the worst. If you watch the SAGs this Sunday, here’s why you may find it superior to this season’s other star-studded self-congratulatory celebrations.

    1. The SAGs have been around for 21 years. That’s long enough to be taken seriously but not so long as to have become stodgy and formulaic.

    2. The SAGs are given only to actors. No sitting through awards for people you don’t care about, like costume designers, animators, directors, or writers.

    3. Each year, the ceremony begins with a handful of actors, from rising ingenues to beloved veterans, revealing how they got into the business. Which is sort of fascinating, occasionally funny, and often touching.

    4. The SAGs are surprisingly irreverent, even the annual lifetime achievement awards. Recall Betty White’s salty acceptance speech a few years ago, or Rita Moreno’s lively turn last year. This year’s winner is Debbie Reynolds, who’ll be introduced by her daughter, Carrie Fisher. So it should be an especially witty, funny, risqué occasion.

    5. It’s probably the only awards show this season where you’ll see “Boyhood” kid Ellar Coltrane, “Grand Budapest Hotel” lobby boy Tony Revolori, “Orange Is the New Black” breakout Laverne Cox, Kravitz, and Rashida Jones as presenters.

    6. The awards are voted on by members of the Screen Actors Guild, so it’s actors voting for their peers. That means the voters are people who are actually experts in the field; it’s not classical musicians voting for rappers, or cinematographers voting for sound effects editors, or faux part-time journalists voting for actual industry professionals.

    7. There are 165,000 members of the Screen Actors Guild, which makes for a large and broad voting sample. So statistically speaking, the awards are more valid than the Emmys (about 15,000 voters), the Oscars (6,124 voters), the Tonys (868 voters), the Critic’s Choice Awards (250 voters), or the Golden Globes (90 voters).*

    8. No musical numbers.

    9. Unlike the Golden Globes, the SAGs still pay tribute to beloved actors who’ve died in the last 12 months by compiling an “In Memoriam” montage. And because they’re actors, they’re all people you’ve probably heard of.

    10. They honor stuntmen and stuntwomen. How cool is that? Alas, they don’t give out those prizes during the televised ceremony, but you can catch them during the online pre-show, which is being simulcast at sagawards.tntdrama.com, sagawards.org, and people.com.

    11. They’re on both TNT and TBS. You know, in case you can’t find ’em.

    12. The awards don’t run a minute over two hours. They can’t, since TNT and TBS rerun them immediately.

    13. Speaking of, if you miss ’em live at 8 p.m. ET, they’re on again at 10 p.m.

*The SAGs probably have more voters than the Grammys, too, but Moviefone couldn’t confirm the number of National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences members who vote for the Grammys. We placed an inquiry to NARAS, which failed to respond by press time.

  • 11 Things We Learned at the NBC Winter TCA Panels: Scoop on ‘Parks & Rec,’ ‘Chicago Fire,’ and More

2015 Winter TCA Tour - Day 10The Winter Television Critics Association Press Tour is underway and Moviefone sat in for the panels at NBC’s day to present their upcoming roster of programming. We got some scoop on new shows and returning favorites — here are the highlights!

    1. Eva Longoria Returns to TV
The “Desperate Housewives” alum’s comedy “Telenovela,” about a daytime actress and her popular show, has a 13-episode order already.

    2. “Heroes Reborn” Has a New Star
And his name is Zachary Levi. The “Chuck” actor will join NBC’s upcoming miniseries, a continuation of “Heroes.”

    3. The Next NBC Live Musical Will Be…
“The Wiz” or “The Music Man.” They’re still deciding. Which would you prefer?

    4. An Undergound Railroad series?
Another musical endeavor for the network will be “Freedom Run,” a musical miniseries that will focus on stories from the Underground Railroad and feature music from Stevie Wonder.

    5. Dolly Parton Has Some TV Tricks Up Her Bedazzled Sleeve
In other music news, county legend Dolly Parton is developing a series of TV movies based on her life and her work. We’re not complaining…

    6. No More Cosby
NBC Chairman Bob Greenblatt says it’s “safe to say” the network won’t be working with the comedian again. “When that many people come out and have such similar complaints, it became a tainted situation,” he remarked when asked about scrapping NBC’s previously planned Bill Cosby project.

    7. Chicago… Med?
There’s already “Chicago PD” and “Chicago Fire,” so why not add “Chicago Med” in the successful mix? Well, that’s the plan.

    8. “Hannibal” Will Return…
This summer. You’ll have to hold tight a little bit for Season 3, everyone.

    9. “The Slap” Is an Interesting Choice for Network
“The Slap,” a miniseries comprised of an impressive cast that includes Uma Thurman, Peter Saarsgard, Thandie Newton, Zachary Quinto, and Melissa George, revolves around the consequences that arise from one parent’s slapping of another family’s child. The “slap” is really just a catalyst for the events that follow, and the complex issues that are raised throughout. “For the first time, we have this luxurious, poetic dialogue… and we’re on network TV,” George noted of the tricky concept.

    10. More “Chicago Fire” / “Chicago PD” Crossovers
“You cant do it too often, but two, three times a season is catnip,” says Dick Wolf.

    11. We’re Going to Miss “Parks & Rec”
OK, we already knew this. But after watching the hilarious cast in action discussing their favorite memories and experience on the show, the whole room felt the impending loss even more. Some highlights of their panel included Amy Poehler expressing her love for the idea of “treat yourself,” Chris Pratt’s vocal hatred of mean internet commenters (“screw everybody who reads comments!”), and producer Mike Schur’s reveal that he originally planned to have Andy Dwyer end up as mayor. We also learned that everyone will return for the finale. Schur mentioned that “the last moments of the show are everybody in the same place at the same time.”

  • Jayma Mays On ‘The Adventures of Puss in Boots,’ ‘Glee,’ and the ‘Wet Hot American Summer’ Prequel

Nickelodeon's 27th Annual Kids' Choice Awards - Red Carpet
You probably know and love The Adventures of Puss in Boots.” The action-packed animated comedy surrounds the swashbuckling heroic feline as he protects the citizens of the mythical town of San Lorenzo against villains after breaking a magical spell and features a stellar lineup of actors, including accomplished voice actor Eric Bauza and “SNL” vet Laraine Newman. You can also expect great guest stars like John Leguizamo, Maria Bamford, and Danny Trejo along the way.

We caught up with Jayma about her foray into the world of animation. Find out what she has to say about her role as Puss’s love interest Dulcinea, what sets the series apart, and her involvement in the final season of “Glee.” She also shared her five favorite animated children’s shows ever, and we couldn’t agree more with her excellent choices.

Moviefone: I know it’s kind of cliche to say that something is fun for both adults and kids, but after watching “The Adventures of Puss and Boots,” I have to say I had a lot of fun with it and, well, I’m not a child…

Jayma Mays: It is a cliched thing to say, but I totally feel the same. When we were in the booth — I love saying ‘in the booth’ because this is my first job like this and I’ve never been able to say this before — I’m laughing a lot. I’m glad to say it’s not just me and I don’t have the mind of a five-year-old.

Everyone’s probably familiar with this character of “Puss in Boots” because of “Shrek,” but what can you tell them about this version? How will it be similar or different?

Obviously I do think people remember him from “Shrek” and from the “Puss In Boots” feature film, but it’s very different. It’s a completely new setting. There’s a grand story that we’re just starting to tell in the first five episodes. Eric Bauza plays Puss in Boots so perfectly. What I love about the show — and it is a Puss in Boots show and Eric Bauza shines so much in this — is there are lots of other characters as well to introduce viewers to. And Dulcinea, who I play, I’m absolutely in love with her. I’m actually surrounded by my own cats right now… They’re just staring at me like, when are you gonna talk about me?

So, I play Dulcinea, who’s a very sweet and I think you can say naive character who might be over infatuated with Puss, but I don’t think she’s sophisticated to understand that yet. As the episodes progress she kind of grows and becomes a little stronger and lively and we learn more about her.

Jayma and her cat Freulein at #NationalDressUpYourPetDay

Is Dulcinea going to get into the action a bit or is she more of the damsel in distress on the sidelines?

Yeah, she definitely gets in there which I love. For kids that are watching, it’s fun to kind of explore that character and see where the show’s gonna take her. She’s definitely not sitting on the sidelines.

Who are the other characters we should know about?

Let’s see. Paul Rugg plays this unicorn and Artephius, who is an owl who I’m absolutely obsessed with. What’s so amazing about being in sessions — and again, I’m kind of learning because this is my first job — you walk in with all these professional voiceover artists who can do all these voices. And I can do two. I’ve got happy Jayma and Jayma sad.

You have such a unique voice! It’s a little surprising that it’s your first time in animation.

It’s something that I’ve been wanting to do forever but it’s a skill that, at least for me, it’s something I’m having to learn and grow and develop. It’s just so very different from being an actor. You don’t necessarily get to be subtle and every word has so much meaning because you’re only using your voice.

Let’s talk about “Glee” for a second. We’re going to Emma on the final season. What can you tell us about that?

What can I tell you about it? Mums the word on the finale but hopefully I’m a part of that, which is not finished but we’re getting really close to completion. It’s always so hard because we’re always sworn to secrecy over there. I can tell you that I’m coming back and I’m very excited to be back and finish out the show. I was actually really elated when they asked because that show is such a big part of my life and my career and I’m so thankful for being there and it’s just really nice for me and for the character to get a little closure. There’s just something really special about being at the beginning of a show and then being at the end. For me, I was really stoked that they asked.

Speaking of new shows, there was just an announcement that you’re going to be part of the cast of the “Wet Hot American Summer” prequel series on Netflix. So cool! What do you know so far and how does it feel to be involved?

I’m so excited. It’s a super teeny part, but I was so excited to be asked to do it. I love that movie. It has such a cult following. All the people in that film… I mean, they were funny then but what they’ve gone on to do now is just incredible. The cast is absolutely incredible. I have a very small part but I’m very excited to do it. I can’t believe they’re doing a serialized version of that. It’s the coolest idea.

“The Adventures of Puss and Boots” streams on Netflix starting Friday, January, 16th.

Jayma also revealed her five favorite animated children’s shows of all time. Check out her picks below:

  • 8 Highlights From the ABC TCA Panels: Scoop on ‘Agent Carter,’ ‘Castle,’ and More

Disney & ABC Television Group's TCA Winter Press Tour - Arrivals
The Winter Television Critics Association Press Tour is underway and Moviefone sat in for the panels at ABC’s day to present their upcoming roster of programming. We got some scoop on new shows and returning favorites — here are the highlights!

    1. “Dancing With the Stars” Will Be Back…
March 16th to be exact. It’s the reality competition’s 20th season and Erin Andrews, Carrie Ann Inaba, Len Goodman, Bruno Tanioli, and Julianne Hough are all returning.

    2. The Future of “Revenge”
When asked about the fate of the soapy series, ABC Prez seemed confident that the show will go on. “I’ve always loved the show and it’s a critical brand for us,” he explained. “We have some great story lines coming up. And there are ways to reinvent it too.”

    3. “Nashville” Love
“We’re loving Nashville. We’re going to have some great announcements about people who are going to appear on Nashville. It’s a very good brand for us, so we love that show,” Lee remarked on the country music series.

    4. No More Singing Competitions… For Now
“Rising Star” wasn’t exactly a hit, so the network will be staying away from the singing competition format for the foreseeable future. Lee did tease that some really exciting new reality shows are set to arrive this summer.

    5. But Things Are Looking Good For “Castle”
“We love Castle. We love those two, and we want to see Castle on the air for many years to come,” Lee said of a Season 8 possibility.

    6. “Fresh Off the Boat” Is Midseason’s Buzziest Comedy
The new sitcom based on chef Eddie Huang’s memoir about moving to Orlando with first generation Taiwanese-American parents looks promising for the network, though it recently garnered some attention due to Huang’s critical first-person essay in New York Magazine. Things got off to an awkward start when one audience member asked, “I love the Asian culture, with the chopsticks and everything. Will there be more chopsticks?” But the panel deflected (not without making some jokes about the question later…) and talked about the show’s significance. “This show to me is historic,” Huang said. “I don’t think you’ve seen a TCA with this many Asian faces in a long time… or ever.”

    7. High Hopes for “American Crime”
The 11-episode gritty crime drama is stacked with a stellar cast — Felicity Huffman, Timothy Hutton, Regina King, Benito Martinez, to name a few… And it comes from “12 Years a Slave” writer John Ridley. Ridley discussed how the show, which touches on issues of class, race, and gender as the investigation unfolds, reflects that of recent racially charged events. “When we originally started working on the show, there were times where we thought maybe we were not relevant anymore. Maybe we’ve moved past certain things. Then as the show was moving along, very sadly we realized that we were actually pre-dating some things. The reality is that unfortunately these events remain cyclical in this country.”

    8. “Agent Carter” / “Agents of SHIELD” Crossover?
When asked about “Agent Carter” and “Agents of SHIELD” joining forces, producer Jeph Loeb hinted, “The safest thing I can say is, hashtag it’s all connected.” Yup — he actually used the word hashtag. BUT he kept quiet when it came to any crossovers related to the upcoming “Avengers: Age of Ultron” film.

Stay tuned for more news from the Winter TCA panels as the week goes on!
