One of the hottest tickets at Sundance was for “Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief,” Alex Gibney’s new documentary. The first trailer has arrived, and it gives you just a taste of the revelations to come courtesy of Gibney, “Going Clear” author Lawrence Wright, and former Scientologists like director Paul Haggis, Marty Rathbun, and Hana Eltringham.
The response at Sundance was overwhelming, and some critics reported receiving an email from a Church of Scientology spokesperson requesting that they amend their reviews with a statement from the organization. The Church of Scientology has also responded with advertisements and online media campaigns targeting Gibney himself.
HBO, which will be airing “Going Clear” on March 29, had 160 lawyers vet the documentary beforehand.
What would you do if you won $86 million in the lottery? Well, if you’re Alice Klieg (Kristen Wiig), you buy your own talk show in the hopes of becoming the next Oprah. Oh, you also quit taking your meds cold turkey, which is never a great idea. James Marsden,Wes Bentley, and Joan Cusack play some of her TV channel cohorts, with Tim Robbins as her shrink Dr. Moffat.
Although this is packaged like a comedy, and it’s from Gary Sanchez Productions, it seems very likely that Alice’s journey is going to go to a rather dark place. Wiig’s known for her comedy chops, of course, but she’s proven adept at drama as well, especially in last year’s wrenching drama “The Skeleton Twins” with Bill Hader, and in the upcoming film “Diary of a Teenage Girl.”
Russell Crowe is not typically a laid-back guy, so it stands to reason that his directorial debut, “The Water Diviner,” is a big sprawling drama about fatherhood and making amends.
Crowe stars as Australian farmer Joshua Connor, a father whose sons were last seen fighting in the World War I battle at Gallipoli. Connor heads to Turkey to search for what’s left of them, and while he’s there, he stays at a hotel owned by a widow (Olga Kurylenko) for a little romantic subplot action. As per the title, Connor has a special talent for finding water and other buried things – like painful secrets from the past and bodies of fallen soldiers, no doubt.
“The Water Diviner” opens on April 24, 2015, in limited cities.
This weekend’s “Kingsman: The Secret Service” might be the first big spy movie of 2015, but it’s far from the last. This August, Warner Bros will unleash “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.,” based on the television series that ran for more than a hundred episodes from 1965 – 1968 (to tell you what a technologically trippy period this was, the first season’s episodes were in black-and-white, the rest in color). This new version retains the period setting but seems to be ruder and more action-packed. Would you expect anything less from director Guy Ritchie?
In the new “Man from U.N.C.L.E.,” Henry Cavill (summoning considerable more charm than he ever exhibited in “Man of Steel”) plays Napoleon Solo, an American secret agent forced to partner with a Russian agent named Illya Kuryakin (Armie Hammer, forever the handsome straight man). Hugh Grant and Jared Harris are British agents and the almost painfully adorable Alicia Vikander seems to be the woman who shares both of their affections.
The action seems typically Guy Ritchie-y, with frantic bouts of super sped up stuff complemented by the achingly slow motion, but the energy seems solid and the period setting certainly does a lot to pile on the charm. It will be interesting to see Ritchie tackle something that isn’t exclusively British-centered, but coming off the two biggest hits of his directorial career with his two “Sherlock Holmes” movies, it’s fair to say that he’s taking the material seriously and will deliver in a big way.
Watching the trailer, though, it’s hard not to think of the original version of “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.,” which was to be the last theatrical film from genius director Steven Soderbergh, with George Clooney in the Napoleon Solo role and featuring a score from David Holmes, based on a script by Scott Z. Burns (“Side Effects”). Ah, what could have been…

Sometimes you just need a little chatty, whimsical Cameron Crowe romantic comedy in your life. The first trailer for Crowe’s new movie, “Aloha,” certainly demonstrates that.
Originally called “Deep Tiki,” the film was ready to go a few years ago with a much different cast (led by Ben Stiller), before being reassembled with Bradley Cooper and Emma Stone in the primary roles. The film concerns a disgraced defense contractor who is sent to Hawaii to supervise a satellite array and, while there, true to form, falls in love. The ridiculously starry cast also includes Rachel McAdams, Alec Baldwin, Bill Murray, John Krasinski, Danny McBride and Jay Baruchel. There will also, presumably, be well-known pop songs expertly placed for maximum emotional devastation.
What’s interesting about the film, which at one point also went by the name “Volcano Romance,” is that there was, at least initially, an element of magic and mysticism which has either a) been cut from the film entirely or b) proved too hard to introduce in an initial trailer meant to get everyone (including soccer moms and guidance counselors) excited about the movie. Hopefully the Polynesian mysticism and talking computer made the final cut. Without these elements, the trailer makes it seem almost too conventionally Cameron Crowe-y. But we will see…
Not to temper the enthusiasm but this is the first movie Crowe has written and directed since 2005 “Elizabethtown,” an embarrassing debacle that he hasn’t completely atoned for. (2011’s “We Bought a Zoo,” Crowe’s last film, saw him working from another writer’s screenplay.) Here’s hoping that he’s communed with the island gods adn reconnected with his creative mojo.%Slideshow-206962%
Channing Tatum unveiled the awesomely unsubtle poster for “Magic Mike XXL” yesterday, but apparently that was just a tease for today’s big reveal. Yes, the trailer for “Magic Mike XXL” is here, and as the trailer says, you’re welcome.
Those of us who remember the ’80s will immediately notice the callback to “Flashdance” and its heroine Alex, a welder by day and stripper by night. Except, naturally, Tatum is the one behind that welding helmet and not Jennifer Beals, and he’s doing something rather suggestive with his materials. Then he starts dancing all over the place. He’s out of control with the dancing! And that’s when the action begins. Abs, breakdancing, partying, Ginuwine’s “Pony,” gyrating, cans of soda exploding, and more abs: It’s all here!
It’s not clear if the trailer’s winking self-awareness will translate to the movie itself, or if the trailer is cut to emphasize the sexy, funny parts. Although “Magic Mike” was humorous and sexy, it was also a little grim. (Anyone else remember that sad little mini pig?) Gregory Jacobs is directing; as with many of Steven Soderbergh’s projects, Jacobs was the assistant director on “Magic Mike.” The script is co-written by Tatum and Reid Carolin, who penned the original “Magic Mike.”
Tatum and pals will dance back into our hearts and loins on July 1, 2015, when “Magic Mike XXL” hits theaters.

Did you miss seeing this new TV spot for “Avengers: Age of Ultron” last night? Maybe you don’t have a TV, or you got up to go to the bathroom, or you scroll through commercials on your DVR – hey, we’re not here to judge.
Anyway, there’s not a ton of new stuff happening in this spot that we haven’t seen before. We do get a better look at Iron Man’s fancy Hulkbuster suit, and there’s more Iron Man-on-Hulk action, but that’s about it.
Or is it? Over at Hitfix Harpy, Donna Dickens notes that we could be getting a glimpse of the elusive Grey Hulk. “But that bit where the Hulk kicks the cop car like Rocket Raccoon kicks grass? The warm color palette used in every other shot of the Hulkbuster fight is absent, replaced with muted blues that indicate a different sequence. So is it the new color scheme that makes Banner’s alter ego look different, or it could be that we’re seeing Grey Hulk?” The Grey Hulk is the more subdued version of the Hulk, which is not to say that the grey guy is totally chill; he’s just sort of slower to Hulk out. Take a look, and let us know what you think.
%Slideshow-264615% UPDATE: HBO’s official “Game of Thrones” Season 5 trailer has been added below.
While everyone is gearing up for the Super Bowl on Sunday, it was easy to overlook the fact that the “Game of Thrones” IMAX fan event just happened nationwide, where they screened two episodes of the beloved fantasy series in the astounding large theatrical format. (Bet that was pretty cool.) Of course, to cap off the night’s entertainment, they screened an exclusive preview of season 5. Some sneaky minx had a video camera, recorded it, and even in low quality, it’s pretty much the coolest thing you’ll see all weekend (discounting, of course, Sunday’s “Tomorrowland” spot…)
Now, keeping in mind that the footage is crummy and amateurish (thanks to Live for Films for alerting us to the link), it still is incredible, epic, and awe-inspiring. Things to keep an eye out for: Tyrion’s epic ’80s power beard (the Little Lion has a mighty mane!), Littlefinger coaching Sansa in the art of being a sneaky bad-ass, Cersei’s vengeful rage, Dany pretty much owning all, and that tumbling, Egyptian-ish goddess statue. Things are about to get real. It’s not until you see something like this that you remember how good “Game of Thrones” is and how much you desperately miss it.
Two soaking wet, hot, young women show up at your doorstep … it’s every guy’s fantasy, right? In director Eli Roth’s “Knock Knock,” though, that dream turns into a nightmare for Keanu Reeves.
The first teaser trailer for the movie is out, and it doesn’t show much beyond the set-up. Colleen Camp and Sondra Locke play two giggling girls who get caught in the rain and turn to Reeves’s family man for help. His wife and kids are away, and at first, it seems Reeves has lucked into a very sexy encounter. But as the ominous tone of the trailer indicates, something just isn’t right about these women.
“Knock Knock” debuted at the Sundance Film Festival last week, and should hit theaters sometime in 2015.
The long-awaited first teaser trailer for the reboot of “The Fantastic Four” is here, and it suggests a darker tone for the Marvel property than the previous film incarnations.
The teaser was very much in the style of Christopher Nolan — highly reminiscent of teasers for “Interstellar” — with an ominous voice warning, “Human beings have an immeasurable desire to discover … [But] with every new discovery there is risk,” as images flash of Reed Richards (Miles Teller) in a high-tech lab, Sue Storm (Kate Mara) working in front of a bank of computer terminals, and some kind of ship preparing to take off.
Along with Teller and Mara, there are brief glimpses of Michael B. Jordan and Jamie Bell displaying the superpowers they gain after some kind of experiment/space flight seems to go wrong.
From the teaser, it looks like Josh Trank’s “Fantastic Four” will sit seamlessly beside other Marvel films — at least aesthetically. The movie opens in theaters on Aug. 7.
