  • Secret ‘Blair Witch’ Sequel Unveiled at Comic-Con 2016

By Piya Sinha-Roy and Rollo Ross

LOS ANGELES, July 25 (Reuters) – Participants at Comic-Con that went into a screening for upcoming horror movie “The Woods,” last week were surprised to come out from the movie having watched the sequel to the 1999 found-footage horror film hit, “The Blair Witch Project.”

The subject and title of Lionsgate teaser film “The Woods” was kept under wraps since it began production but was unveiled at San Diego’s pop culture event as “Blair Witch,” the third installment of the franchise, in theaters on Sept. 16.

“Blair Witch, it’s all about the mystery,” director Adam Wingard told Reuters. “I think the way we’re advertising it is in spirit of that.”

The surprise reveal follows in the footsteps of J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot company, which unveiled “10 Cloverfield Lane,” sequel to 2008’s “Cloverfield,” in January, just two months before its release in theaters.

The “Blair Witch Project” was a box office hit in 1999 and ushered in a new era of found-footage horror. The movie featured footage from video tapes found from three documentary filmmakers who went missing in a remote forest as they tried to uncover the local legend of the Blair Witch.

The new “Blair Witch” film follows the brother of one of the missing filmmakers as he takes his friends out to the same forest to search for his sister. Events quickly go downhill when the group loses track of time and their location and get lost in the woods.

“Blair Witch” skips over the events of the 2000 sequel “Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2” that was derided by fans.

“We’ve changed the mythology in a lot of ways just to kind of introduce new features and new ideas,” writer Simon Barrett said.

The original “Blair Witch Project” filmmakers – writer-directors Eduardo Sanchez, Daniel Myrick and producer Gregg Hale – also disregarded the failed sequel and said they are on board with the latest film as executive producers.

“The thing that we liked about this project when Lionsgate approached us, especially with Adam and Simon working on it, is that they really stuck to the original mythology,” Myrick told Reuters.

“They came at it with a very authentic approach to the film which we felt was with love for the first movie so it was all done for the right reasons.” (Reporting by Piya Sinha-Roy and Reuters TV; Editing by Bernard Orr)

  • ‘Money Monster’ Trailer Takes George Clooney (and Wall Street) Hostage

Director Jodie Foster‘s “Money Monster” is totally feelin’ the Bern, giving an angry investor (Jack O’Connell) a chance to rail against Wall Street and the 1 percent by taking a financial show TV host hostage. George Clooney plays Lee Gates, “the wizard of Wall Street,” who apparently gives crappy investment advice to the suckers who watch him on “Money Monster.” Foster’s thriller plays out in real-time as Lee and his producer, Patty Fenn (Julia Roberts), are taken hostage and have to try and stay alive while also uncovering the truth behind some big-money corruption.

    Here’s the first trailer:

It looks like a tense one. It could also, potentially, be a preachy one. But Wall Street angst is all the rage these days, and real-time thrillers/hostage situations tend to make for gripping drama. Just don’t try this at home, angry people with guns!

“Money Monster” is scheduled for release on May 13, 2016.

  • The First ‘Storks’ Trailer Shows Off ‘New and Improved’ Baby Delivery

This ain’t your grandpappy’s stork drop. That “quaint” baby delivery system is a thing of the past, as shown in this first official teaser trailer for “Storks,” touted as “from the studio that delivered ‘The Lego Movie,’” and featuring the voices of Kelsey Grammer, Andy Samberg, Keegan-Michael Key, and Jordan Peele.

This teaser just features Grammer’s executive stork as he explains Stork Mountain’s “new and improved human infant production facility. We have perfected and streamlined the process, devising a zero mistake workflow!” Of course, in the background — while he’s promising “the opposite of the Titanic” — we see the not-so-perfect process going hilariously awry.

    Here’s the teaser:

And here’s Warner Bros.’s synopsis for the family film:

“Storks deliver babies…or at least they used to. Now they deliver packages for global internet giant Cornerstore.com. Junior, the company’s top delivery stork, is about to be promoted when he accidentally activates the Baby Making Machine, producing an adorable and wholly unauthorized baby girl. Desperate to deliver this bundle of trouble before the boss gets wise, Junior and his friend Tulip, the only human on Stork Mountain, race to make their first-ever baby drop – in a wild and revealing journey that could make more than one family whole and restore the storks’ true mission in the world.”

Sounds like it might actually be a bit of a heart-tugger. “Storks” is scheduled for release in September 2016.

  • ‘Whiskey Tango Foxtrot’ Trailer Sends Tina Fey to Afghanistan

War is hell, but even hell must enjoy some gallows humor now and then. Tina Fey plays a journalist sent on assignment to Kabul in the dark comedy “Whiskey Tango Foxtrot,” which is based on Kim Barker’s memoir, “The Taliban Shuffle: Strange Days In Afghanistan And Pakistan.” Paramount just dropped the first trailer, featuring Margot Robbie, Martin Freeman, Alfred Molina, and Billy Bob Thornton.

“For me to get to do a movie where I fly in helicopters and shoot guns and run from explosions, that’s a treat,” Tina Fey told USA Today. “I don’t get to do any of those things on a daily basis.” The trailer gives a glimpse of the lighter side of life in the region, including a term Tina called “Kabul cute,” which is “the idea when a regular normal-looking woman goes into a place where there aren’t very many women. She becomes a real object of desire in a way that is hopefully comical.”

Margot Robbie’s character, another reporter named Tanya, tells Tina’s Kim that in New York she would be like a 6 or a 7, but in Kabul she’s “a serious piece of ass” — like a 9 or a borderline 10. So Kim asks Tanya, “What are you like here, a 15?” Tanya replies, deadpan, “Yeah.” Ah, the important questions in wartime!

“Whiskey Tango Foxtrot” hits theaters March 4, 2016.

  • The New ‘DC’s Legends of Tomorrow’ Trailer Is Going to Make You Very, Very Happy

dc's legends of tomorrow logoThe wait is FINALLY over.

The CW has released the first substantial footage from the upcoming, highly anticipated “DC’s Legends of Tomorrow,” and it packs a quite a wallop. The “first look” — more like a trailer, really — lays out the story clearly: Time-traveling rogue Rip Hunter (cool name, bro) travels back in time to assemble an elite group of heroes (and a couple of not-quite heroes) to stop an utterly bleak future. Witty one-liners, action-packed shenanigans, and some seriously cool crossover potential ensue.

Among his recruits are Sara Lance (White Canary), Jay Jackson (Firestorm), Ray Palmer (The Atom), Hawkgirl, Captain Cold, and Heat Wave. With a lineup like that and coming from the network that brought us “Arrow” and “The Flash,” “DC’s Legends of Tomorrow” has serious potential to be your new favorite show.

You can find out when “DC’s Legends of Tomorrow” premieres January 21, 2016, on The CW. Watch the trailer.

  • The ‘Goodnight Mommy’ Trailer Will Scare the Crap Out of You

There’s nothing good about the “Goodnight Mommy” trailer. Better words to describe it are creepy, haunting, confusing, and — more than anything else — nightmare-inducing.

While the trailer plays coy with the plot, we do know a thing or two about “Mommy.” The story centers on twin boys whose mother comes home to their idyllic country home after having undergone what appears to be a very extensive array of cosmetic surgeries (hey, nothing wrong with a little nip-tuck these days). The twist? Momma’s a bit different now — in more than just the looks department — and the boys start to suspect an “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” type situation. Also, cockroaches are somehow involved.

The trailer sets a very clear, horrific tone, and with plenty of creepy shots and an established, eery ambience, “Goodnight Mommy” will surely bring a lot to the party in the visual department, but will the movie truly bring the scares? Guess we’ll find out soon enough.

Watch the trailer, get creeped out, and catch the movie when it hits theaters September 11, 2015.

  • ‘Mississippi Grind’ Trailer: Ryan Reynolds, Ben Mendelsohn Gamble on Road Trip

In the new movie “Mississippi Grind,” Ben Mendelsohn plays a gambling addict who owes money to (his words) “everyone.” He thinks his new friend, played by Ryan Reynolds, is a good-luck charm, so the two guys take a road trip together to a high-stakes poker game. You can get a preview of what happens in the new trailer, just released by A24:

You really shouldn’t base major financial decisions on whether the next person out of the bathroom *is* or *is not* wearing glasses, but that is a sign of desperation. Mendelsohn’s Gerry is clearly desperate, but Reynolds’s Curtis must have some issues too, to go along with all of this.

    Here’s the official synopsis:

In this lively, freewheeling road movie, Emmy Award nominee Ben Mendelsohn plays Gerry, a talented but down-on-his-luck gambler whose fortunes begins to change when he meets Curtis (Ryan Reynolds), a younger, highly charismatic poker player. The two strike up an immediate friendship and Gerry quickly persuades his new friend to accompany him on a road trip to a legendary high stakes poker game in New Orleans. As they make their way down the Mississippi River, Gerry and Curtis manage to find themselves in just about every bar, racetrack, casino, and pool hall they can find, experiencing both incredible highs and dispiriting lows, but ultimately forging a deep and genuine bond that will stay with them long after their adventure is over. Reminiscent of classic 1970s American Cinema, Mississippi Grind is an unforgettable journey featuring two characters who—flawed as they may be—are always worth rooting for. It’s a film about friendship, addiction, regret, family, and the paths we sometimes unexpectedly find ourselves on—told with empathy, humor, and a remarkable light touch…”

“Mississippi Grind” — which comes from Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden, the team behind Ryan Gosling’s “Half Nelson” — co-stars Sienna Miller, Analeigh Tipton, Robin Weigert, Alfre Woodard, James Toback, and Teri Wyble. It’s scheduled for release on September 25.

  • Stoner Comedy ‘American Ultra’ Gets Killer Red Band Trailer

Adventureland” co-stars Kristen Stewart and Jesse Eisenberg must be high — really high — on pretending they’re in love, since they’re back at it in “American Ultra.” A new red band trailer was just release and it’s pretty trippy, with Eisenberg playing a “stoned cold killer” (groan!) with Stewart as his girlfriend. It actually looks much better than it probably should, and since it co-stars Connie Britton, Topher Grace, Walton Goggins, Bill Pullman, Tony Hale, and a bunch of other random people we’d never expect to see in a stoner comedy, we’re down for a viewing.

If you’re wondering what makes this a red band trailer, there are a few f-bombs, mention of a titty bar, and of course drug talk. Check it out:
Got the munchies yet? “American Ultra” opens August 21.
