‘Top Gun: Maverick’ is a follow-up to the 1986 ‘Top Gun’, directed by Tony Scott. It’s been over 36 years since the original film and even with all the delays due to COVID and scheduling conflicts, fans patiently awaited for it to arrive in theaters. The film centers around Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Tom Cruise) who has been ordered to return to Top Gun flight school to train the next group of pilots for a dangerous mission.

The official synopsis for ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ is below:

“After more than 30 years of service as one of the Navy’s top aviators, Pete “Maverick” Mitchell is where he belongs, pushing the envelope as a courageous test pilot and dodging the advancement in rank that would ground him. Training a detachment of graduates for a special assignment, Maverick must confront the ghosts of his past and his deepest fears, culminating in a mission that demands the ultimate sacrifice from those who choose to fly it.”

The Gravity-Defying Stunts In ‘Top Gun: Maverick’

Tom Cruise is known for delivering top-tier stunt sequences in his movies often performing the stunts himself, such as hanging on to the door of a commercial aircraft during takeoff in ‘Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation’. For ‘Top Gun: Maverick’, while he is an experienced and licensed pilot, Cruise did not actually fly the Boeing F/A 18F Super Hornet jet used in the film. Due to military regulations, the actor flew in the backseat of the aircraft while a Navy pilot controlled the plane. This was the same scenario for the cast. But this doesn’t mean the cast had an easy time – the intense flying sequences require serious training for the actors and Cruise himself designed an intensive three-month training program for the cast to go through prior to filming.

On top of the intense training, the cast had to be their own cinematographer while they were in the air. The F18 aircraft did not allow room for additional crew, and during the flight sequences, director Joseph Kosinski was not able to communicate with the cast or see the footage being filmed. Therefore it was up to the actors to make sure they were framed and lit properly.

The film earned $126.7 million on its opening weekend. While it’s been almost 10 months since it’s premiere, there are still theaters playing the film, though it is limited. ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ has a total runtime of 2 hours and 11 minutes.

Paramount Pictures and Tom Cruise had a big surprise at San Diego Comic-Con on Thursday: the first official “Top Gun: Maverick” trailer.

The preview didn’t disappoint. It puts Peter “Maverick” Mitchell (Cruise) back in the cockpit and shows glimpses of the next generation of fighter pilots. In case you’re curious what Maverick has been up to for the last 30-plus years, there’s an answer for that, too. The trailer offers a quick summary of the pilot’s accomplishments as well as some of his shortcomings.

And, of course, you’ll see some great aerial footage. The film’s release was previously delayed to get stellar in-air action scenes, and from what we’ve seen so far, the wait is going to be worth it. Watch below.

  • Jon Hamm Says ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Footage Is ‘Out of This World’

Jon Hamm Says ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Footage Is ‘Out of This World’

    Sony Pictures Entertainment

More than 30 years after the original film’s release, a “Top Gun” sequel is finally set to take to the skies. And while the new flick has seen its share of delays, one of the new stars says it will definitely be worth the wait.

In an interview with Collider, Jon Hamm — who will be playing a new character in flick, though no details about the role have been release yet — teased some of the spectacular sights in store for filmgoers once “Top Gun: Maverick” hits theaters. The film, featuring returning stars Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer, had been delayed from its original summer 2019 release date and shifted to 2020, reportedly to allow extra time to film flight scenes.

Based on Hamm’s rave review of the “out of this world” footage he’s seen so far, that production extension was the right call.

“They’re using some technology on this that is never before seen,” the actor told Collider. “We’re shooting the movie in, I think, 6K. So it’s incredibly hi-def. The aerial footage is mind-blowing. And it’s mostly practical. There’s not a lot of CG. Those guys are really up in planes and getting thrown around in multiple Gs.”

Sounds awesome. We’re looking forward to seeing the finished product when “Top Gun: Maverick” flies into theaters on June 26, 2020.

“Top Gun” fans have already been waiting for more than 30 years for a sequel, and now they’re going to have to add another one.

The release date for “Top Gun: Maverick” has been pushed back, Deadline reports. The Tom Cruise-starring film was scheduled to open on July 12, 2019, but now it is reportedly moving to June 26, 2020. And so the waiting continues.

It’s not all bad news, though. The extra time is to ensure the movie’s in-air action scenes will be excellent, according to Deadline’s sources. We suspect fans will agree that’s not a part of the film that should be rushed. Maverick’s return to the skies has to be spectacular.

The aerial stunts were among the best parts of “Top Gun.” They helped make it a big commercial success when it was released in 1986, not to mention earn the film a lasting place in fans’ hearts. As much as another year’s wait might be frustrating, we expect we’ll be grateful in the long run.

Make sure you mark your calendar with the new date for “Top Gun: Marverick.”

Jennifer Connelly Boards ‘Top Gun 2’

    Lionsgate

Jennifer Connelly is joining Tom Cruise as (we presume) a new love interest in “Top Gun: Maverick,” Deadline reports.

The actress, who won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for “A Beautiful Mind,” recently appeared in “Only the Brave” and has a starring role in the upcoming TV series “Snowpiercer.”

Original “Top Gun” star Val Kilmer is returning to play Maverick’s nemesis Iceman, with “Whiplash” star Miles Teller as the son of Goose (Anthony Edwards).

The sequel finds Maverick (Cruise) 30-plus years later as a Top Gun flight instructor who takes Teller and other young pilots under his wing.

Joseph Kosinski of “Tron: Legacy” and “Oblivion” fame is directing the sequel. He also directed the firefighter drama “Only the Brave,” in which Connelly and Teller co-starred.

Top Gun: Maverick” has cast the late Goose’s (Anthony Edwards) now older son with the “Whiplash” and “Thank You for Your Service” star.

Nicholas Hoult and Glen Powell were also said to be in consideration, but considering this is a “Maverick” movie, they probably wanted someone who would spar well with Tom Cruise. Miles Teller has that cocky attitude in spades.

The Hollywood Reporter had said they were doing screen tests in the final rounds, and that’s where Miles Teller must’ve pulled ahead.

He shared the news in true “Top Gun” need-for-speed fashion:

Anthony Edwards and Meg Ryan played the young lad’s parents in the 1986 movie. Mini Goose was featured in the “Great Balls of Fire Scene,” and shown with blond hair:

So maybe they’ll dye Miles Teller’s hair, or just show that he got darker hair as he got older. Not exactly a big deal, but still — someone around here has to care about continuity!

“Top Gun: Maverick” is scheduled for release on July 12, 2019.

  • Maverick Is Back: Tom Cruise Shares ‘Top Gun’ Sequel Photo on ‘Day 1’ of Filming

Tom Cruise has had a need for speed for more than 30 years. But now he’s finally getting back in the sky for “Top Gun: Maverick,” sequel to the 1986 hit “Top Gun.” Production just started for its July 2019 release in theaters.

Cruise has been talking about this sequel forever. Even after he revealed the official title last year — and said filming would likely begin in “the next year” — and Paramount gave us a release date … it still didn’t feel real.

    Now it does.

Cruise teased a photo from “Day 1,” taking us right back on that highway to the danger zone:

That loving feeling is rushing back!

Look at Tom Cruise. We just can’t quit him. Here he is at 55-years-old — 56 on July 3. His “Mission: Impossible — Fallout” looks genuinely amazing and comes out this July. And then next July he has his long-discussed “Top Gun” sequel.

He’d better still be in good enough shape for some serious running scenes, even as a hotshot fighter pilot, or we’ll feel let down.

  • Tom Cruise Gives an Update on ‘Top Gun 2’: ‘We’re Trying to Figure It Out’

'Jack Reacher: Never Go Back' Berlin Premiere; Berlin PremiereMore than 30 years after it first hit theaters, “Top Gun” still doesn’t have a sequel. While there’s been talk over the past few years of finally making “Top Gun 2” a reality, no concrete plans for the follow-up have materialized yet. So is the project actually happening, or not?

Star Tom Cruise addressed that question in a recent interview with “The Graham Norton Show,” where the host asked him about his meeting with producer Jerry Bruckheimer back in January. Bruckheimer and Cruise shared a photo of themselves smiling together, with the promise that they were talking about “Top Gun 2,” though there’s been no word about the project since then.

According to the actor, the film isn’t exactly a done deal yet — but it’s not dead, either.

“Yes, we’re discussing it,” Cruise told Norton of the long-awaited sequel. “We’re trying to figure it out. … If we can figure it out, I’d love to work on it.”

One of Cruise’s stipulations is reportedly that he’d like to do his own stunts, just as he did for the first flick. The actor reminisced about the experience with Norton, though he noted that learning how to fly was also a lesson in learning how not to barf all over the cockpit. Guess moviemaking isn’t always so glamorous after all.

The fact that Cruise is talking about the project so openly gives us hope that it may still happen after all. Stay tuned for more intel from the star.

  • Val Kilmer Joins ‘Top Gun 2,’ Posts Confusing Facebook Status

Val Kilmer caused quite a stir on social media this week when he insinuated that “Top Gun 2” was officially a go, and that he was 100 percent on board for the flick. Now, the actor has backtracked a bit on those claims, telling fans that he’s only been offered a part in the potential follow-up — which may or may not make it into theaters.

Kilmer wrote on his Facebook page early Tuesday that he “just got offered” a role in the long-gestating sequel to 1986’s “Top Gun.” Kilmer also insinuated that original star Tom Cruise was already on board, and wrote, “let’s fire up some fighter jets again!!!”

But that post — which also name-checked Francis Ford Coppola and Gene Hackman, who Kilmer used as examples of people he’d also immediately agree to work with — apparently caused some confusion among fans, who thought that those big names were somehow involved with the production. The actor then edited his post to clarify his remarks, and added a bit more context, cautioning followers, “This is a long way off so calm down.”

“This has been talked about for a long long time and being offered a role is very different from doing a role,” Kilmer added in his update about the proposed sequel. “I jumped the gun with my post. I jumped the topgun… An innocent mistake. It was just such a wonderful phone call with my agent.”

I just got offered #topgun2 – not often you get to say “yes” without reading the script…”It’s starring Gene…

Posted by Val Kilmer on Monday, November 16, 2015

So, here’s what we know so far: “Top Gun 2” is indeed in development; Kilmer has been offered the role (and presumably taken it, pending Cruise’s involvement and an official greenlight); the film is not yet a sure thing; Cruise still has to sign on officially. And no, Coppola and Hackman are not involved. (Seriously, how did anyone make this mistake? Kilmer’s post could have been better-written, sure, but those two would be really random choices to suddenly join this flick.)

This has been your daily dose of “Top Gun 2” speculation. Stay tuned — there’s bound to be lots more ahead.

  • ‘Top Gun 2’ Script in Works With ‘Amazing Role’ for Tom Cruise’s Maverick

“Top Gun 2” feels no need for speed. The original came out in May 1986 and we’ve been talking about a sequel for years. But it sounds like stuff is finally in motion on Maverick’s (Tom Cruise) second round, with Skydance CEO David Ellison giving Collider an update during press day for “Terminator Genisys” in Berlin.

Way back in 2010, Tony Scott was being considered to direct, with Christopher McQuarrie charged with writing the script. Sadly, much has changed — Scott died in 2012 and it sounds like McQuarrie is no longer on board for the script. Here’s the latest from Ellison:

Justin Marks is writing the screenplay right now. He has a phenomenal take to really update that world for what fighter pilots in the Navy has turned into today. There is an amazing role for Maverick in the movie and there is no Top Gun without Maverick, and it is going to be Maverick playing Maverick. It is I don’t think what people are going to expect, and we are very, very hopeful that we get to make the movie very soon. But like all things, it all comes down to the script, and Justin is writing as we speak.”

Collider made sure to confirm they meant Tom Cruise as Maverick, not some new guy in the role. Ellison also discussed technical details of the movie and more on the modern plot:

…Absolutely, I think this is a movie that should be in 3-D and in IMAX, and again something that you can shoot practically. As everyone knows with Tom, he is 100% going to want to be in those airplanes shooting it practically. When you look at the world of dogfighting, what’s interesting about it is that it’s not a world that exists to the same degree when the original movie came out. This world has not been explored. It is very much a world we live in today where it’s drone technology and fifth generation fighters are really what the United States Navy is calling the last man-made fighter that we’re actually going to produce so it’s really exploring the end of an era of dogfighting and fighter pilots and what that culture is today are all fun things that we’re gonna get to dive into in this movie.”

It would be nice to see this movie relatively soon, especially since 2016 will mark the 30th anniversary of the original “Top Gun.” That timing looks good, and hopefully The Powers That Be are on the same wavelength. Are you excited to see Maverick back in the sky or is it too little too late?
