Jennifer Connelly Boards ‘Top Gun 2’

    Lionsgate

Jennifer Connelly is joining Tom Cruise as (we presume) a new love interest in “Top Gun: Maverick,” Deadline reports.

The actress, who won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for “A Beautiful Mind,” recently appeared in “Only the Brave” and has a starring role in the upcoming TV series “Snowpiercer.”

Original “Top Gun” star Val Kilmer is returning to play Maverick’s nemesis Iceman, with “Whiplash” star Miles Teller as the son of Goose (Anthony Edwards).

The sequel finds Maverick (Cruise) 30-plus years later as a Top Gun flight instructor who takes Teller and other young pilots under his wing.

Joseph Kosinski of “Tron: Legacy” and “Oblivion” fame is directing the sequel. He also directed the firefighter drama “Only the Brave,” in which Connelly and Teller co-starred.

  • ‘Top Gun 2’ Casting Goose’s Son: Miles Teller, Nicholas Hoult in Running

The need for speed is getting passed down to the next generation.

“Top Gun: Maverick” is looking to cast an actor to play Goose’s son, according to The Hollywood Reporter. In the original 1986 movie, Nick “Goose” Bradshaw (Anthony Edwards) was the best friend and wingman of Tom Cruise’s Pete “Maverick” Mitchell. He ended up dying in an accident for which Maverick blamed himself.

Goose had a young son with his wife (Meg Ryan). In the sequel, director Joseph Kosinski is considering frontrunners Nicholas Hoult, Glen Powell and Miles Teller to play the older version of his son.

Hoult has starred in the “X-Men” movies as Beast, while Teller broke out in Damien Chazelle’s “Whiplash.” Powell played John Glenn in “Hidden Figures” and is currently in Netflix’s romantic comedy “Set It Up.”

Sources told THR that final rounds of screen tests are taking place this week before Cruise embarks on a press tour for “Mission: Impossible – Fallout.”

“Top Gun 2” is slated for release July 12, 2019.

  • Val Kilmer Returning For ‘Top Gun 2’ as Iceman

23rd Annual Simply Shakespeare Benefit Reading Of 'The Two Gentlemen Of Verona'Val Kilmer feels the need, the need for speed again. The actor is reprising his infamous role as Iceman in “Top Gun: Maverick.”

Tom Cruise is already on board for the sequel to the 1986 classic that made him a star. In the original, Kilmer’s Tom “Iceman” Kazansky and Cruise’s Pete “Maverick” Mitchell were rivals (with Iceman telling Maverick “I don’t like you because you’re dangerous”) but eventually begrudgingly earned each other’s respect.

The sequel continues to follow fighter pilots in the academy, but in a world where drones are making the old style of flying obsolete. Rumors point to Maverick now in a teaching role (so, basically, the student has become the master).

Production recently began on “Top Gun 2,” with Cruise marking the occasion on Twitter:

“Top Gun: Maverick” is slated for release July 12, 2019.

  • Tom Cruise Reveals ‘Top Gun’ Sequel Title

Do you feel the need for speed? Then, get ready — the “Top Gun” sequel is heading this way and it’s got a title!

Tom Cruise revealed the news in an interview with Access Hollywood. “It’s called ‘Top Gun: Maverick,’” he said. So, not “Top Gun 2.” Cruise added, “I didn’t want a number.”

The sequel will have the same tone and vibe (and soundtrack by Harold Faltermeyer) as the 1986 original. “Stylistically, it’s going to be the same,” Cruise said.

“Aviators are back, the need for speed. We’re going to have big, fast machines … It’s going to be a competition film, like the first one.”

Of course, Cruise is quite a bit older than he was, so Maverick won’t be a hotshot young pilot anymore. It seems more likely Maverick oversees a new group of trainees — and shows them what it takes to be a good wingman.

“Top Gun: Maverick” doesn’t have a projected filming or release date, but Cruise has insisted “it is definitely happening.” He told an Australian TV program that filming would likely begin “in the next year.”
