  • ‘Inferno’ Movie: See Tom Hanks, Dan Brown and Cast in Amazing Set Photos

Tom Hanks is returning to his role of Robert Langdon in the latest Dan Brown novel adaptation. “Inferno” is being directed by Ron Howard and produced by Brian Grazer (among others) for a fall 2016 release. And since it’s just about finished filming as of early July 2015, does that mean Ron and Brian can now focus on “Arrested Development” Season 5? Please?

In reality, they still have a lot of work to do on “Inferno,” even if the actors seem to be wrapping up their roles on set. “Inferno” co-stars Felicity Jones, Omar Sy, Sidse Babett Knudsen, Ben Foster, and Irrfan Khan. Filming started in April, and a good chunk of it was shot in Budapest, Hungary, but they also filmed in Italy. Ron Howard and stars shared a few photos along the way, so here are some impressive recent and not-so-recent shots from the movie set, mostly from the director himself:

Looks great so far! We’re intrigued. Are you? “Inferno” is currently set for release on October 14, 2016, pushed back from its original 2015 date.

  • ‘Apollo 13’ 20th Anniversary: 20 Things You (Probably) Didn’t Know About the Tom Hanks Classic

Not all Hollywood blockbusters are about rampaging dinosaurs, time-traveling cyborgs or spandex-clad heroes.

Some big-budget movies get by just fine focusing on real-life moments of danger and drama. “Apollo 13” is one of those films.

Released 20 years ago today on June 30, 1995, here are 20 things you need to know about how director Ron Howard and star Tom Hanks worked to deliver one of the best space movies in the history of always.

    1. It may be one of the most iconic lines in movie history, but “Houston, we have a problem” isn’t exactly what was said during the mission. Jim Lovell actually said, “Houston, we’ve had a problem.” The edit was made for the film because “we’ve had” implies that the problem is over.

    2. On that note, Jim Lovell wasn’t the only astronaut to speak that famous line. Jack Swigert first radioed in with “Okay, Houston — we’ve had a problem here.” But because the transmission was partially garbled, Lovell’s recording is the one most often replayed and remembered.

    3. The filming of “Apollo 13” was made more complex by the fact that director Ron Howard elected not to use any pre-existing footage of the real Apollo 13 mission.

    4. Brad Pitt was supposedly offered the role of Jim Lovell, but turned it down for the starring role in David Fincher’s “Seven.”

    5. John Travolta also turned down the lead role before it was ultimately given to Tom Hanks.
    6. “Apollo 13” reunited “Forrest Gump” co-stars Tom Hanks and Gary Sinise. Weirdly enough, one scene between Hanks’ Gump and Sinise’s Lieutenant Dan involved the latter promising that he would become an astronaut if Gump became a shrimp boat captain. Sarcastic or not, at least he made good on his promise.

    7. The cast and crew spent 13 days flying aboard NASA’s KC-135 airplane in order to achieve the zero gravity effect needed for filming, also known as the “Vomit Comet.” The Zero-G effect lasted a mere 23 seconds at a time.

8.The command module for the Apollo 13 craft was named Odyssey, in honor of the film “2001: A Space Odyssey.”

    9. Because of his role in the film, Hanks had an asteroid named after him in 1996. It’s called “12818 Tomhanks (1996 GU8).”

    10. The real Jim Lovell played the navy captain in the film responsible for rescuing the Apollo crew at sea. Lovell even wore his old captain’s uniform for the scene.
    11. This film was one of two times Ed Harris played a character tasked with guiding astronauts back to Earth after a mechanical disaster. He provided the voice of Houston Mission Control in “Gravity.”

    12. The film’s plot and its emphasis on astronauts using random spare parts to perform vital repairs lead in part to inspiring the reality series “Junkyard Wars.”

    13. Because of their altered flight trajectory, the Apollo 13 crew members are believed to have traveled further from Earth than any humans in history. Decades later, that record still stands.

    14. For the scene in which Bill Paxton’s character Fred Haise throws up, the crew used a can of Beef-a-Roni stew to simulate vomit. After losing a bet with Hanks, Paxton wound up eating the leftover stew.
    15. Ron Howard’s brother, Clint (pictured above), played a significant role in the film as flight controller Seymour Liebergot.

    16. Several other of Howard’s family members had cameo roles in the film, including his father (a priest), mother (Jim Lovell’s mother) and his wife and daughter (crowd members).

    17. Ron Howard said that someone attending a test screening gave a negative review of the film, claiming that if the story had happened in real life, the astronauts “would never have survived.”

    18. The movie features a scene where Paxton’s character plays the song “Spirit In the Sky” while Lovell laments that it should have been the theme music from “2001” (Strauss’ “Also Sprach Zarathustra”). Ironically, that iconic piece of classical music was played during the actual Apollo 13 mission.

    19. Hanks, Paxton and Kevin Bacon all underwent rigorous training at the U.S. Space Camp in Huntsville, Alabama. Part of that training involved learning the function of each of the 500 buttons and switches in the spacecraft.
    20. While the line “Failure is not an option” was spoken by Ed Harris in the film, it was never actually spoken by anyone during the Apollo 13 mission.

  • Emma Watson Joining Tom Hanks in Tech Thriller ‘The Circle’

BRITAIN-FASHION-AWARDS“The Circle” is complete: Emma Watson has been tapped to star in the technological thriller alongside Tom Hanks.

Hanks will produce the flick, based on the novel by Dave Eggers, as well as play a yet-to-be-determined role. Watson will play the lead, described as “a recent college graduate who scores a job at a powerful Internet monopoly, called the Circle, which boasts a gorgeous campus and incredible amenities for its employees,” per Vanity Fair. The site writes:

After ascending the ranks fairly quickly, she discovers herself to be in the center of a corporation linking “users’ personal e-mails, social media, banking, and purchasing with their universal operating system, resulting in one online identity and a new age of civility and transparency.” A press release for the project explains that the film will explore “the perils of life in a digital age where personal data is collected, sifted, and monetized and used for surveillance, rendering privacy obsolete.”

This meaty role is yet another eclectic part for the British actress, who’s setting herself apart from her “Harry Potter” days with a swath of diverse projects including “The Bling Ring,” “The Perks of Being a Wallflower,” and the upcoming live-action “Beauty and the Beast.” That keen eye for quality work was not lost on “The Circle” writer-director James Ponsoldt, who praised his new leading lady.

“Emma Watson is one of my favorite actors, and her incredible talent, sensitivity, and deep intelligence will bring an electric energy to ‘The Circle,’” Ponsoldt said in a statement.

We couldn’t agree more about Watson’s talent, and can’t wait to see her go toe-to-toe with Hollywood legend Hanks. Stay tuned for more.

  • Tom Hanks May Play Capt. Sully Sullenberger in Clint Eastwood’s Biopic

SeriousFun Children's Network's New York City Gala - ArrivalsFresh off the announcement that he was tackling the life of Capt. Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger, director Clint Eastwood appears to have already found his leading man.

Deadline reports that Eastwood has tapped Tom Hanks — an American hero in his own right — for the high-profile role of the pilot, who safely landed a failing plane in the Hudson River in 2009, saving the lives of all 155 passengers on board. Eastwood is adapting Sullenberger’s book, “Highest Duty: My Search for What Really Matters,” for the as-yet-untitled flick, with a screenplay written by Todd Komarnicki.

According to Deadline, Hanks is still hammering out a deal, and Eastwood and studio Warner Bros. are eager to work with the actor. This seems like perfect casting, as Oscar winner Hanks has shown a knack for playing high-profile, real-life heroes in the past (most recently in the title role in “Captain Phillips“), and already possesses the geniality that Sullenberger became known for following his swift maneuvering.

With Hanks on board, this film should easily soar. Stay tuned.

  • Rita Wilson Reveals Breast Cancer Diagnosis, Double Mastectomy

"Girls" Season Four Premiere - Arrivals
Actress Rita Wilson announced Tuesday that she has breast cancer, and has had a double mastectomy and reconstructive surgery.

In a statement released to People, Wilson revealed her diagnosis and recent surgery, and explained that she is “expected to make a full recovery … Because I caught this early, have excellent doctors and because I got a second opinion.” Wilson has an underlying condition known as LCIS (lobular carcinoma in situ) which puts her at high risk for cancer, and had undergone regular screenings for the disease.

A recent biopsy revealed an irregularity known as PLCIS (pleomorphic carcinoma in situ), and though her pathology showed no cancer, the actress was encouraged by a friend to seek out a second opinion from another pathologist. Wilson did, and her cancer was discovered; a third pathologist confirmed the diagnosis, and she had a double mastectomy and reconstructive surgery last week.

“I share this to educate others that a second opinion is critical to your health,” Wilson’s statement said. “You have nothing to lose if both opinions match up for the good, and everything to gain if something that was missed is found, which does happen. Early diagnosis is key.”

Wilson thanked her husband, Tom Hanks, as well as family, friends, and doctors, and said she is “getting better every day and look[ing] forward to renewed health.” She was scheduled to appear in the Broadway play “Fish in the Dark,” but has taken a leave of absence from that project until May 5 while she recovers from surgery.

Wilson is the latest female celebrity to share personal health information with the public in the hopes of raising awareness. Angelina Jolie famously spoke out about her decision to have a preventive double mastectomy and preventive surgery to remove her ovaries and fallopian tubes in order to reduce her risk of cancer.

  • Best of Late Night TV: Tom Hanks and Mila Kunis Have Sex Talk; January Jones Plays Pie Golf (VIDEO)

If you’re like us and value your sleep, you probably nodded off into your Ambien dreamland before the party started on post-prime time TV. Don’t worry; we’ve got you covered. Here’s the best of what happened last night on late night.

Monday night marked James Corden’s debut as the new “Late Late Show” host, replacing Craig Ferguson. Tom Hanks and Mila Kunis were his first guests, and you can see they redesigned the set so they’re all just sitting next to each other. Mila went on record to say she loved being pregnant and loves being a mom. Bold stance! James told a story where he thought he and his wife were being followed by paps but the photog was really shooting Ashton and Mila. The three of them talked about their kids, and Tom said he is the new face of “manspreading.”

In the second video, James introduced himself and the band, stayed humble and self-deprecating, and paid homage to Craig. He promised to look after the show for him. James’ laugh is quite something.

In the third video, Tom and James re-enacted every Tom Hanks movie in just under seven minutes. Classic! He could start rivaling Fallon with these bits. January Jones of “Mad Men” was on “The Tonight Show” and she and Jimmy Fallon played a new game called Pie Golf, along with Bubba Watson. Jimmy and Bubba had to land their shots or January would smash a pie in their faces. Very Betty Draper of her! Jimmy Kimmel is back in L.A. after his week in Austin and he talked to Chelsea Clinton about her time in the White House, her daughter, social media, and her love for action movies. She and Jimmy also did a Serve a Year PSA to get more young people to volunteer a year of their lives to national service. Jesse Tyler Ferguson was on Seth Meyers talking about “Modern Family” and seeing the show’s kids grow up. The gorgeous (blonde!) Christina Hendricks was also on “Late Night with Seth Meyers” and talked about the end of “Mad Men.” They filmed it several months ago but now that the fans will see it, she knows it’s really almost over. She knows how the series ends but she’s looking forward to seeing the episodes herself. She is happy with the conclusion of Joan’s story too, which is encouraging – especially since she didn’t think it would ever be good enough. Ben Stiller was on “Late Show with David Letterman” and talked about teaching his son stripper etiquette. It’s funny – his son is learning to read so he reads aloud what he sees, and one time it was when they were passing a strip club, so he read “live nude dancers.” So Ben and his son had to have an awkward chat.
Naomi Watts was on “Conan,” talking about how her whole family sometimes gets around NYC on bicycles and how her kids help cover her in fake blood for movie scenes. Can you believe she and Liev Schreiber have been together for 10 years now? They are both so lucky. Nick Kroll was also on “Conan,” talking about his favorite “Kroll Show” characters and his one celebrity impression.

  • Tom Hanks Stars in the New Carly Rae Jepsen Video and It’s Amazing (VIDEO)

The new Carly Rae Jepsen song, “I Really Like You,” is a nugget of pure pop perfection. With its glittery synths, soaring bridge and insane, never-ending chorus (how many “really”s is that?) Jepsen is something of an unrated pop performer; her debut album “Kiss” showcased that “Call Me Maybe” was not some fluke. But this rivals even that showstopper, at least in terms of it getting lodged in your head like nothing else. It’s profoundly brilliant. And yet, somehow, there was still room for improvement, as exhibited by the jaw-dropping music video that stars none other than America’s Sweetheart, Tom Hanks.

The video almost exclusively features Hanks, who wakes up singing the song and, throughout the day, continues to sing along to it. This means walking through SoHo (how good are his gloves?), signing autographs, posing for selfies, and hailing a cab, all while singing this ridiculously catchy pop confection. When he finally does meet up with Jepsen… Well if you don’t have a dopey grin plastered across your face, then that should do it. (Yes, that’s another very famous face who joins the dance party.)

If you need a Monday morning pick-me-up, this should do the trick. %Slideshow-315%
