  • Ryan Reynolds Sounds Off on ‘Deadpool 2’ Director Change

Ryan Reynolds is still putting maximum effort into “Deadpool.” He just told Entertainment Weekly — which named him Entertainer of the Year — that they are currently in the development stage for “Deadpool 2,” but “we’re about to move into production.”

Original director Tim Miller is out, reportedly after clashing with Reynolds on the direction of the sequel. Miller’s replacement is “John Wick” director David Leitch.

When asked previously about the director change, Reynolds simply told The Hollywood Reporter, “Ultimately, everything is on track, that’s all that matters at the moment.”

He had more to say on the subject to EW, praising both Miller and Leitch:

On Tim Miller: “There is not a human being on Earth that worked harder on ‘Deadpool’ than Tim. He’s an incredibly, incredibly talented director.”

On Davd Leitch: “Everybody was just a fan of his work. He’s just a guy who’s so muscular with his action. He also really understands those ‘Deadpool’ sensibilities and where we need to take the franchise from here. And I love ‘John Wick.’ One of the things that David Leitch does that very few filmmakers can do these days is they can make a movie on an ultra tight minimal budget look like it was shot for 10-15 times what it cost.”

There’s certainly something to be said for creative use of funds, but why would “Deadpool 2” really need someone who can work on “an ultra tight minimal budget”? Didn’t this thing make half a mint? Show it all the money.

Anyway, Reynolds added that they are still casting for Cable and “looking at” Domino as another “Deadpool 2” character. One guy who is ready to return is T.J. Miller as Wade Wilson’s buddy Weasel. Here’s what Miller recently told Cinema Blend:

“I have been talking with Ryan Reynolds and the writers, and they’re really excited about [‘Deadpool 2’]. I think, for me, I just want Weasel to wield a gun, at one point. But there’s more fun stuff coming.”

“Deadpool 2” is currently aiming for release in January 2018.

  • ‘Deadpool 2’ Director Exits After Clash With Ryan Reynolds (Over Kyle Chandler?)

Clear eyes, full hearts, can’t win?

Over the weekend, the surprising news emerged that “Deadpool” director Tim Miller would not be returning to direct “Deadpool 2.” Deadline reported it first, confirming from studio insiders that Miller’s “exit was over mutual creative differences” with star/producer Ryan Reynolds, in one instance over the potential casting of Kyle Chandler as Cable. Deadline said the split was amicable, though, and Miller is still high on Fox’s list of directors for future projects.

Miller didn’t have an official deal for the sequel, but he was developing the script. TheWrap added more details on (allegedly) what creative differences came to a head. They claim Miller and Reynolds hadn’t spoken for a while and had a pretty contentious relationship, not that “amicable” at all. Part of the tension reportedly came from Reynolds’s agents renegotiating his deal, with more money, casting approval, and creative controls for “Deadpool 2.” That’s understandable, but it slowed down the process and brought to light their differences in approaching the sequel.

Miller, TheWrap claims, wanted a more stylized sequel and Reynolds wanted to focus on more of the raunchy comedy. “Friday Night Lights” and “Bloodline” star Kyle Chandler was also reportedly a source of conflict, since Miller is said to have wanted him to play Cable, but Reynolds did not, and the studio ultimately backed Reynolds.

It’s sad to see Miller leave this franchise, after such a breakout hit in the 2016 film. But if the star and director couldn’t make it work as a team, then it’s not too shocking that Fox would stick with Reynolds — he is literally the face behind the character, and he is still keeping up a brilliant marking campaign on Twitter throughout the year. He is irreplaceable. Unfortunately, we now know his “Deadpool” directors are not. So who is next? Many fans hope “Ant-Man” and “Hot Fuzz” director Edgar Wright will step in, but we’ll have to wait and see.

And we still love you, Kyle Chandler. Don’t let the Merc With a Mouth get you down.

  • Fox Officially Confirms ‘Deadpool 2’ With Ryan Reynolds, Tim Miller

Though Fox was reportedly developing a sequel to “Deadpool” months before the offbeat superhero flick even opened, the studio has now officially confirmed that plans for “Deadpool 2” are indeed a go, and the entire original creative team will return for the follow-up.

Speaking at a panel at CinemaCon on Thursday, Fox brass revealed that titular star Ryan Reynolds would be back in his signature red and black suit, and director Tim Miller would once again call the shots behind the camera. “Deadpool” screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick are also penning the script again.

The move was a no-brainer for the studio, since “Deadpool” defied box office odds to become the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time, and broke a bunch of other records along the way. It didn’t hurt that the flick was a critical and fan favorite, too, and Reynolds himself was front and center in a hands-on, goofy publicity campaign that engaged with audiences on a personal (and pretty hilarious) level. Fox is no doubt hoping for more of the same on the second go-round.

Last fall, “Deadpool” producer Simon Kinberg teased that comic character Cable would feature prominently in a potential “Deadpool 2,” and that appears to still be the case. No other plot details have been revealed just yet, though, and there’s no official production timetable.

Stay tuned for more intel as it becomes available.

  • There’s a ‘Deadpool’ Director’s Cut That’s ‘Even More Raw’

Deadpool” has already landed itself an R rating from the MPAA, and has been banned in China for its graphic violence and nudity. But why stop there? According to one of the film’s stars, there’s also a director’s cut of the flick, and it’s even raunchier than what will be seen on the big screen next month.

That intel comes courtesy of actor T.J. Miller, who was chatting with fans alongside titular star Ryan Reynolds following a fan screening of “Deadpool” in London this week. During the Q&A session, Miller confirmed that director Tim Miller also had an unrated version of the controversial flick up his sleeve, presumably waiting for fans on home video.

“When you see the full director’s cut of it, that’s gonna be even more raw,” T.J. Miller promised fans at the screening. “It’s pretty heavy duty.”

It’s interesting that the director wants to push the envelope even further, considering he was given pretty much endless freedom to depict all the sex and violence he wanted from the beginning (producers promised the flick would earn an R long before it went before the MPAA). But apparently, Tim Miller’s vision for this “X-Men” spinoff really verged on the X-rated at times. Thankfully, if you’re into that sort of thing, you can check it out on Blu-ray and DVD in a few months.

In the meantime, the much more tame, R-rated “Deadpool” is due in theaters on February 12.

  • Producer Says ‘Deadpool’ Will Be Rated ‘Hard R’: ‘It’s Graphic’

deadpoolThere have been promises before that “Deadpool” will be a different breed of superhero movie, and that includes the film’s rating. Star Ryan Reynolds has said in the past that the flick will be rated R, and now, producer Simon Kinberg is doubling down on that declaration.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, in which he also debuted a new “Deadpool” photo (see below), Kinberg said that audiences would not be disappointed in the colorful, foul-mouthed hero’s onscreen representation.

“‘Deadpool’ is a hard R,” Kinberg told EW. “It’s graphic. Nothing is taboo. You either commit to a truly outrageous boundary-pushing kind of movie or you don’t.”

In fact, the flick is so dark that its director, Tim Miller (making his feature debut), linked it to a surprising source of inspiration.

“I felt ‘Fight Club‘ and Tyler Durden were good corollaries,” Miller told EW. “We are in strip clubs and dive bars and crappy apartments and far away from the shiny X-Men world.”

Check out a new photo from the flick below. “Deadpool” is due in theaters on February 12.
