‘Toy Story 4’ Will Finally Answer the Question of What Happened to Bo Peep

    Pixar

There’s a scene in 2010’s “Toy Story 3,” when Woody (Tom Hanks) makes the case that the toys should stick together, no matter what. He concedes that the gang had lost some friends along the way – Wheezy, the squeaky penguin voiced by animation legend Joe Ranft, and the Etch A Sketch seen at the beginning of the very first “Toy Story.” Woody pauses and Rex (voiced by Wallace Shawn) interjects, “Bo Peep.” Woody is visibly shaken. “Yeah, even, even Bo,” Woody stutters. His eyes don’t meet any of the other characters. “All good toys who have gone on to new owners,” Woody continues enthusiastically. But it’s clear that he isn’t so sure.

In “Toy Story 4,” out June 21st (tickets are on sale now), we finally get an answer of what happened to Bo (voiced again by Annie Potts) and we get to see her for the first time in 20 years (the last time she appeared was 1999’s “Toy Story 2”). And it seems like she’s been through … a lot.

We were shown some footage, where Woody and Bo meet up for the first time since whatever that moment he alludes to in “Toy Story 3” was. This isn’t the Bo as you remember her; her transformation is akin to Sigourney Weaver going from “Alien” to “Aliens.” She’s tough. She’s a survivor. She has one arm bandaged (was it broken?) and has turned her polka-dotted skirt into a cape that would make Batman envious.

“It was what excited me about coming onto the project. It was like, Oh she’s back!? What are we going to do with her? What’s she like? She was a blank slate. I think it was super essential that we stayed true to her but we were able to redefine her. It took a while to nail that down,” story artist Carrie Hobson told us. She even said that the movie was so centered around the character that its production codename was “Peep.” This was her movie.

    Pixar

But finding out what made her tick proved to be something of a challenge. Hobson said it involved a lot of brainstorms. “We would rehash what had happened to her as a starting point. And then because of that, what would her personality be and what would it mean to her to see Woody again?” Hobson explained. It turns out that figuring out what Woody’s arc would be in the new film helped them also decide where Bo should go. “If she’s a lost toy, that’s great, because it contrasts Woody,” Hobson said. In “Toy Story 4,” Bo is a lost toy who has embraced her independence and the adventurousness that goes along with being beholden to no one. (Don’t worry, her sheep are still around.) And Woody is desperately clinging to the idea of belonging to a child; he spends much of the early part of the movie convincing a new character, Forky (Tony Hale) not only that he’s an actual toy but that he is Bonnie’s toy. It’s a fascinating dichotomy and one that you can tell took a lot of finessing.

Technically, figuring her out was also a huge challenge. Directing animator Becki Tower said, “The idea that she’s porcelain and a superhero are totally contradictory was an interesting play from day one. We did our best to just break that down and try to be as fair as possible to have enough pliability to really have emotional depth to be able to admit all those feelings.” Emotional depth, obviously, is what sets Pixar films apart from most animated fair and from the footage that we have been screened of “Toy Story 4,” this one will be just as emotional as the rest.

And with the reemergence of a beloved character, perhaps slightly marginalized in the original films, that hasn’t been on screen in 20 years, there are a lot of question marks still, even for those that helped bring her to life. “I’m just curious how she’ll be taken,” Tower admitted. As for Hobson? She’s just ready for the spin-off. “I would love to see Bo’s movie. I think she, we worked really hard to giving her her own drive and this movie and build a her out. So hopefully it gives audiences enough of a taste that they just want to know everything about her and would love to know where she goes.”

    Us too.

“Toy Story 4” is in theaters everywhere on June 21st (tickets are on sale now!)

Tim Allen was so “startled” by the emotional impact of “Toy Story 4,” he “couldn’t even get through the last scene.”

“A couple of the scenes toward the end are really hard to get through,” he told “The Talk” hosts. That may sound dark, but Allen raved that it’s “an incredibly great” story. It’s still a “Toy Story” movie, and so far it sounds like it’s going to be one of Pixar’s greats. We only have a little over a year to wait to see it.

Allen had to hold back emotion even talking about “Toy Story 4,” which he compared to the recent Marvel blockbuster “Avengers: Infinity War.

Here’s what Allen said when Sara Gilbert of “The Talk” asked if he had returned to the recording booth as Buzz Lightyear:

“Yes… I gotta resist getting emotional, ’cause I don’t want to give it away, but this is an incredibly great story. If you’re at all a superhero fan. ‘Infinity War’ is — I’m a big superhero fan — that didn’t seem like it was going to work. It was a lot of vignettes that all make sense. This ‘Toy Story 4’ — we’ve only been through it once, there will be several more [times going through it]. But it is so emotional, it’s so funny, it’s so big, the idea they’ve come up with. I’m startled. ‘Toy Story 3’ I thought was amazing. This, I couldn’t even get through the last scene, OK? I would love to a be a Washington leaker. I just can’t do it. I can’t give any more away. They’ve got great characters. A couple of the scenes toward the end are really hard to get through.”

Wow. There was never a second when we weren’t planning to see the fourth “Toy Story” movie, but now we’re fully hyped. It’ll probably take our tear ducts to infinity and beyond, but … we’ll try to be ready.

“Toy Story 4” is scheduled for release in theaters next June 21, 2019, nine years after the previous movie “Toy Story 3” in 2010, and 20 years since “Toy Story 2” in 1999. The first “Toy Story” movie — led by Tim Allen and Woody (voiced by Tom Hanks) came out in 1995.

‘Last Man Standing’ Season 7 Cast Photo Shows Off Two Recast Characters

    Last Man Standing
    ABC

Tim Allen isn’t the “Last Man Standing” in the Season 7 cast photo — he’s not even standing at all.

Entertainment Weekly shared the first full cast photo for the new season, which moved from ABC to Fox. The photo shows 10 cast members, including the two replacements stars:

Molly McCook (“The Ranch”) has taken over the role of middle daughter Mandy Baxter from Molly Ephraim; Jet Jurgensmeyer will now play the Baxter’s young grandson Boyd, taking over from Flynn Morrison. (Here are the reasons for the recastings.)

    Here’s the photo:

Shown from left are Jonathan Adams, Hector Elizondo, Christoph Sanders, new cast member Molly McCook, Tim Allen, Nancy Travis, Amanda Fuller, new cast member Jet Jurgenson, Jordan Masterson, and Kaitlyn Dever.

    Tim Allen added (via EW):

“It’s going to be one great theme each week seen as through the eyes of a very tolerant integrated family.”

Some fans are particularly upset at the casting change for Mandy Baxter, but we’ll see if they still tune in.

The comedy follows the father of three girls who tries to “maintain his manliness” in a house full of women. ABC canceled the series last year, prompting shock and anger from its fans. Fox picked it up, and now Season 7 will premiere Friday, September 28 at 8 p.m. on Fox.

‘Last Man Standing’ Reveals Two Recast Roles for Fox Revival

    Last Man Standing
    ABC

Last Man Standing” is trading one Molly for another.

The Tim Allen comedy is moving from ABC to Fox for Season 7, which starts this September.

Two roles have been recast for the revival: Mike and Vanessa Baxter’s (Nancy Travis) middle daughter Mandy Baxter, and the Baxters’ young grandson Boyd.

Molly McCook (“The Ranch”), 28, is taking over the role of Mandy from Molly Ephraim, 32. Executive producer Matt Berry explained why, during the TCA press tour:

“When the show was cancelled… [Molly Ephraim] got involved in some different things, so when [Last Man Standing] came back, she was not able to do it. It’s unfortunate. We love her deeply. She’s a big part of who we were. But [it’s] exciting for us to look around and see who we can get to play that character. We want someone to come in and not play Molly Ephraim. We want somebody to come in and play Mandy. We’ve seen a lot of great actresses.”

(Left-leaning Molly Ephraim has taken some heat from the right for her decision to leave the show.)

Jet Jurgensmeyer will now play Boyd, taking over from Flynn Morrison.

Executive producer Kevin Abbott explained that change:

“We’re going to have a new actor [playing the role] because we want to age up the character. We’re bringing him back at the age of 12, so we can do some fun storylines about a young man on the cusp of becoming a man.”

The new stars are clearly excited about joining the cast:

“Last Man Standing” Season 7 preimeres Friday, September 28, at 8 p.m. ET on Fox.

  • Tim Allen Defends Roseanne During ‘Icy Time’ for Comedians: ‘Who Makes Up These Rules?’

Tim Allen Defends Roseanne During ‘Icy Time’ for Comedians: ‘Who Makes Up These Rules?’

    Last Man Standing
    ABC

Tim Allen defended Roseanne Barr while promoting his revived show “Last Man Standing” during the TCA summer press tour.

ABC canceled Allen’s show last year, but it was later picked up by Fox. ABC fired Barr from “Roseanne,” giving the rest of the cast their own show called “The Conners.”

Tim Allen was asked if he thought ABC was right to fire Barr in May over her racist tweet about Valerie Jarrett, which she later deleted as “a bad joke” spawned by “Ambien tweeting.”

In his answer, Allen defended the woman he knew in his answer:

“I go way back with Rosie and that’s not the Rosie I know. She was the most diverse and tolerant woman I’ve ever known for a long time. Whatever got in her head isn’t the Roseanne I know. It’s a very icy time. I’ve been a comedian for 38 years and I’ve never seen it, like Lenny Bruce said at the Purple Onion, ‘We’ve gone backwards.’ There are things you can’t say. There are things you shouldn’t say. Who makes up these rules? And as a stand-up comic, it’s a dangerous position to be in because I like pushing buttons. It’s very sensitive. I don’t know what Roseanne [meant] … but that’s not the woman I know. Whatever came out of that, whatever she said by that, she is inclusive and tolerant. It’s unfortunate.”

When pressed to answer what he thought about ABC’s decision to fire her, Allen said:

“They had to do what they had to do and that’s their decision. I know Barr, and she’s not that person.”

Allen also finally agreed with ABC Entertainment president Channing Dungey to say ABC didn’t cancel “Last Man Standing” over his politics — which were known going in, just like Roseanne’s. Instead, he said it was a matter of the ownership structure of the show. Renewal for ABC would require large licensing fees, and greater production costs, in addition to Allen’s salary. That’s part of why Fox was a good fit to pick the show up — the show is partly owned by 20th Century Fox Television.

Allen went into detail about what his show will be like at Fox, and how it will differ from “Roseanne.” The conversation was focused around Roseanne, but since he seems to be pushing back against a culture that silences comedy — including Twitter jokes — do you think he feels the same way about Disney firing James Gunn for his rape/pedophilia tweets of many years ago?

So much of this debate has broken down on political lines, but if the argument is that people should be able to tweet “jokes” without repercussions, does that go for everyone? ABC and Marvel Studios are both owned by Disney, which does seem to have a higher standard of behavior than most studios to protect its brand. (Not that Walt Disney himself would pass any modern test.)

“Last Man Standing” premieres Friday, September 28 at 8 p.m. on Fox.

  • ‘Last Man Standing’ Recasts Two Roles for Season 7: Report

    20th Century Fox Television

Cancelled Tim Allen comedy “Last Man Standing” is rising again on Fox, but two original cast members won’t be joining him in the revival, according to a new report.

TVLine has the scoop that both Molly Ephraim (who played Allen’s character’s daughter, Molly) and Flynn Morrison (who played his grandson, Boyd) “have opted not to return for Season 7.” Both roles are currently being recast.

There’s a bit of a time crunch on that process, though, as Fox has already announced that “Last Man Standing” will be debuting on the network in September. The sitcom previously aired on ABC, which axed the show — reportedly due to increasing costs, though Allen asserts it was because of his politics — back in May of 2017.

According to TVLine, the status of another original cast member, Kaitlyn Dever (who plays Eve, another of Allen’s character’s daughters), is also in limbo. Dever is currently “in negotiations to return on a recurring basis,” the site reports.

The rest of the “Last Man” ensemble will be back, though, including Nancy Travis (wife Vanessa), Amanda Fuller (eldest daughter Kristin), Jonathan Adams (Chuck), Christoph Sanders (Kyle), Jordan Masterson (Ryan), and Hector Elizondo (Ed).

  • Fox Revives ‘Last Man Standing’ With Star Tim Allen

“Last Man Standing” has landed on its feet at a new home.

Fox officially is bringing back the comedy starring Tim Allen a year after it was canceled by ABC. Allen will return as will the original cast, including Nancy Travis, Hector Elizondo, Jonathan Adams, Christoph Sanders, Amanda Fuller, and Jordan Masterson.

Allen plays the father of three girls and tries to “maintain his manliness” in a house full of women. The show was a solid performer for ABC, and fans protested that the network canceled it due to Allen’s conservative views. The network denied it. It is more likely that ABC didn’t want to pay rising costs for a veteran comedy produced by another company.

And in this case, that company, 20th Century Fox, could go to its corporate sibling, the Fox network to get another season in light of the huge success of the blue collar “Roseanne” revival.

Fox recently cleared its schedule by canceling “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” “Last Man on Earth,” and “The Mick.”

In a statement, Allen said, “Excited? Team ‘LMS’ was in the sixth inning, ahead by four runs, stands were packed and then for no reason, they call off the game. It leaves you sitting in the dugout, holding a bat and puzzled. Now we get the news from Fox that it’s time to get back out on that diamond – hell yes, I’m excited!”

“When I heard the offer to create more episodes of ‘Last Man Standing,’ I did a fist pump so hard I threw my back out. It’s the fans! I could not be more grateful for the fans who wrote petitions and kept up the passion and incredible support for the show. And a fist pump, ouch, for Dana Walden and Gary Newman at Fox for not only listening to the fans, but for making the bold move to bring ‘Last Man Standing’ back. I’m sure audiences will be curious to see what we look like after all these years. Oh, has it only been one year? Well, just goes to show you – a lot can happen in a year.”

  • Fox May Revive Tim Allen Comedy ‘Last Man Standing’

Looks like last season may not have been the end for Last Man Standing” after all: Multiple media outlets are reporting that the Tim Allen sitcom may be revived by Fox.

According to TVLine, Allen has “signed a deal for a potential Season 7 and conversations are underway with key cast members and EPs from the original incarnation to join him.” The star confirmed the possible revival on social media on Thursday afternoon.

“They heard all your voices people!!” Allen tweeted to followers. “LMS just might be a reality. Keep it up. Who wants more #LastManStanding ?”

TVLine reports that part of the inspiration to bring back “Last Man” is thanks to the surprise smash success of fellow returning sitcom “Roseanne,” which features a conservative protagonist (and star). Allen himself has continually claimed that ABC cancelled “Last Man” because of his political views, though ABC has repeatedly countered that the decision came down to money.

There’s certainly some truth to the latter explanation, since “Last Man” was wrapping its sixth season last year, and an upcoming contract renewal process for the highly-paid Allen would likely have been quite expensive for the network. Compounding the situation was the fact that ABC did not own the rights to “Last Man” — 20th Century Fox, its potential new home, does — and therefore the network would have had to pay that company even more to continue licensing the show. (That hefty pricetag is one reason that CMT, which airs reruns of the sitcom, eventually passed on rescuing the series.)

Now that Fox has its hands on the property, though, it remains to be seen if it will pony up whatever paycheck Allen may request. According to The Hollywood Reporter, “Insiders stress the talks are on the early side and could break down ahead of the network’s May 14 upfront presentation.”

And Variety reports that even if a deal comes through for Allen, the status of some of the show’s original costars is also up in the air, since both Nancy Travis and Hector Elizondo are attached to other projects. (Though in the case of Travis’s character, who plays Allen’s character’s wife, producers could go the “Kevin Can Wait” route and just kill her off.)

Stay tuned to see if this deal comes together. If it does, you can expect a splashy announcement at the aforementioned upfronts.
