    • Host Conan O’Brien will return for next year’s Oscars ceremony.
    • O’Brien has experience with shows such as the Emmys, ‘The Simpsons’ and his own late night output.
    • The 2026 ceremony will be held on March 15th next year.

    Well, that didn’t take long.

Clearly looking to avoid the protracted search and endless speculation about who would host the 2025 Oscars, the heads of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences have moved quickly to confirm that this year’s host, comedian and talk show veteran Conan O’Brien, has already been confirmed to return for 2026.

Yes, forget making any guesses as to whether Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman or any number of other big names (longtime Oscar host Billy Crystal accepting a giant payday to come back for one more ceremony?), this time the Academy wanted to make it clear: Conan is the man. Again.

It follows the well-received ceremony of earlier this month, which saw ‘Anora’ score five Oscars (including a record four in one night for one person on one movie for writer/director/producer/editor Sean Baker) and a running time that, while it was overlong, still managed to be entertaining.

You can find our recap here.

A lot of that credit goes to O’Brien, the writing team assembled to work with him and the producing side of things, so it’s perhaps not surprising that Emmy-winning producing team Raj Kapoor and Katy Mullan are also returning to lead the show for the third consecutive year.

And on a pure ratings level it was also a success, as the ceremony, held on March 2nd, delivered the highest viewership numbers in five years. The broadcast drew 19.69 million viewers and had a dominant presence on social media, racking up 104.2 million interactions, surpassing both the Grammys and the Super Bowl in online engagement.

If this year’s Oscars wasn’t enough of an introduction to wider audiences as to O’Brien’s style, here’s a quick briefing…

Conan began his late-night hosting career in 1993, taking over for David Letterman on NBC’s ‘Late Night.’ After an ill-fated, year-long tenure at ‘The Tonight Show’ after replacing Jay Leno in 2009, O’Brien later moved to TBS for ‘Conan,’ which he hosted from 2011 to 2021.

In recent years, he transitioned from anchoring a late night talk show to hosting a hit podcast, ‘Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend,’ and presiding over a podcasting empire under the banner of Team Coco.

A former writer on ‘Saturday Night Live’ and ‘The Simpsons,’ he has garnered 31 Emmy nominations, five of which resulted in wins.

In terms of awards shows, O’Brien has also hosted the Emmy Awards a couple of times, and also served as emcee of the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in 1995 and 2013. He was named one of Time’s 100 Most Influential People in 2010, and is the 2025 recipient of the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor.

O’Brien was typically quippy about his return engagement:

“The only reason I’m hosting the Oscars next year is that I want to hear Adrien Brody finish his speech.”

It’s a reference to ‘The Brutalist’ Best Actor winner Adrien Brody, whose speech, which ran to around five minutes and 40 seconds, has ranked as the longest in Academy history.

Kramer and Yang were more straightforward in their own press release:

“We are thrilled to bring back Conan, Raj, Katy, Jeff and Mike for the 98th Oscars! This year, they produced a hugely entertaining and visually stunning show that celebrated our nominees and the global film community in the most beautiful and impactful way. Conan was the perfect host — skillfully guiding us through the evening with humor, warmth and reverence. It is an honor to be working with them again.”

Disney Television Group President Craig Erwich had this to say:

“Conan’s unique comedic style perfectly captured the moment, and I’m excited to have his talents back onstage next year to helm another indelible performance.”

Finally, this was the comment from Oscars executive producers Raj Kapoor and Katy Mullan:

“We are both so honored to be returning in our roles for the 98th Oscars. We can’t wait to work with Conan and his entire team as we continue to explore even more special and heartfelt opportunities to celebrate next year’s nominees and the impact of film around the world.”

When will the 98th Oscars be on TV?

The 98th Academy Awards, held once again at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood, are set to air live on ABC on March 15th next year, starting at 7pm ET/4pm PT.

    • Conan O’Brien will host next year’s Oscars ceremony.

    • O’Brien has experience with shows such as ‘The Simpsons’ and his own late night output.

Each year –– aside from when a previous host such as Jimmy Kimmel agrees to return –– there is the seemingly long slog for the team behind the Academy Awards in finding a suitable host for the televised ceremony of handing out trophies to some of the best movies and performances of the past year.

Now we finally know who has the job: Conan O’Brien, a man who is best known for his comedy career, his relatively short-lived stint in primetime late-night TV and his resurgence after that.

He’s an interesting choice –– certainly a proven talent in both writing and performing, but perhaps not as well-known as some previous hosts. Still, his job will be to make some initial jokes and keep the ceremony moving and we’re fascinated to see what he comes up with.

While the search for a new host is private, there are always leaks and speculation about who might take the stage, following a legacy that has included the likes of Kimmel, Billy Crystal, Whoopi Goldberg, Jerry Lewis, Hugh Jackman and Bob Hope.

This year, while Kimmel was offered the chance to return, he turned it down, and comedian John Mulaney also reportedly passed on the job. There was also talk of Jackman coming back, this time alongside ‘Deadpool and Wolverine’ co-star/pal Ryan Reynolds, but that has not worked out.

In his own, inimitable, self-deprecating style, O’Brien had this to say about the choice:

“America demanded it and now it’s happening: Taco Bell’s new Cheesy Chalupa Supreme. In other news, I’m hosting the Oscars.”

Academy CEO Bill Kramer and Academy President Janet Yang were more straightforward in their own press release:

“We are thrilled and honored to have the incomparable Conan O’Brien host the Oscars this year. He is the perfect person to help lead our global celebration of film with his brilliant humor, his love of movies, and his live TV expertise. His remarkable ability to connect with audiences will bring viewers together to do what the Oscars do best –– honor the spectacular films and filmmakers of this year.”

Disney Television Group President Craig Erwich had this to say:

“Conan is a preeminent comedic voice, whose decades-long success is marked by his distinctive humor and perspective. He joins an iconic roster of comedy greats who have served in this role, and we are so lucky to have him center stage for the Oscars.”

Finally, this was the comment from Oscars executive producers Raj Kapoor and Katy Mullan:

“Conan has all the qualities of a great Oscars host –– he is incredibly witty, charismatic and funny and has proven himself to be a master of live event television. We are so looking forward to working with him to deliver a fresh, exciting and celebratory show for Hollywood’s biggest night.”

    • Adam Sandler says the ‘Happy Gilmore’ sequel starts filming soon.
    • NFL star Travis Kelce has a role, as does Sandler’s ‘Uncut Gems’ director Benny Safdie.
    • And Kelce has also signed on to a new action comedy.

We’ve known for a while that Adam Sandler has quietly been planning a sequel to one of his biggest hits, golf comedy ‘Happy Gilmore’.

Netflix is backing the new effort, and Sandler has now confirmed that it’ll start shooting soon and that the likes of Kansas City Chiefs tight end (and in wider pop cultural terms, Taylor Swift’s current beau) Travis Kelce and Benny Safdie, who directed Sandler in ‘Uncut Gems’ will both have roles.

What was the story of ‘Happy Gilmore’?

Happy Gilmore (Sandler) has long aspired to be a hockey player. Despite a powerful slapshot, Happy’s inability to skate and his volatile behavior excludes him from being accepted by any hockey team. Furthermore, Happy’s grandma is being evicted from her home after failing to pay her taxes.

After playing with some golf clubs and learning he can shoot golf balls far distances, he decides to join the PGA Tour in an effort to win money to buy back his grandmother’s home. Happy’s bad-boy image attracts a loyal following, but also attracts the attention of Shooter McGavin (Christopher McDonald), the favorite to win the PGA Tour who is worried that Happy’s rise to stardom will undermine his shot to win.

Along the way, he’s helped by Carl Weathers’ one-armed mentor, Chubbs and trades blows with ‘The Price is Right’ host Bob Barker.

What’s the latest news on ‘Happy Gilmore 2’?

Adam Sandler in 'Happy Gilmore'. Photo: Universal Pictures.
Adam Sandler in ‘Happy Gilmore’. Photo: Universal Pictures.

Appearing on ‘The Tonight Show’, Sandler talked up the schedule for the new movie:

“We’re going to do ‘Happy Gilmore.’ This is happening. We’re getting ready to shoot it in New Jersey. We start in a couple weeks. It’s good. We worked hard on the script. We didn’t want to let anybody down. People have been asking me for a long time. We’re really excited about it. We wrote our asses off. So many of the golfers are being nice and will be a part of it.”

And thanks to efforts from Kelce himself (a dedicated fan of the original) and fans of the player, he’ll have a role.

Here’s what Sandler said on that front:

“Travis… he mentioned it, so we have a nice something for Travis. He’s gonna come by. He’s a very nice guy. You guys would love him in real life. What a big, handsome guy. Funny and cool as hell. He’s a stud and he’s so funny.”

As for Safdie, who has been known for a dual career directing movies alongside brother Josh (though they’re both currently focused on solo projects) and acting, he’ll also crop up, with Sandler telling Indiewire that he’ll “have a juicy part” in the movie.

Where else will we see Travis Kelce?

(L to R) Kansas City Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce. Photo: Travis Kelce's Instagram Account.
(L to R) Kansas City Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce. Photo: Travis Kelce’s Instagram Account.

Kelce has been busy trying to spin his NFL and Swift-adjacent celebrity into a showbiz career, even as he continues to see success on the field (his Kansas City Chiefs won the Super Bowl this year).

He already has one established gig as the host of Prime Video’s ‘Are You Smarter Than a Celebrity?’ quiz show and executive produced dark comedy ‘My Dead Friend Zoe,’ which premiered at SXSW and will be in theaters this coming November.

Now he’s expanding into acting roles. He has one in the can already, ‘Grotesquerie,’ the new horror drama from Ryan Murphy, which premieres on FX on September 25th.

The show focuses on a series of heinous crimes that have unsettled a small community and Detective Lois Tryon (Niecy Nash-Betts), who feels these crimes are eerily personal, as if someone — or something — is taunting her.

Kelce’s role in that is as yet unknown.

But he’s also now looking to take a leading role, snagging the star part in a new action comedy that has some solid backing, according to reporter Jeff Sneider.

‘Loose Cannons’ is the latest production from ‘John Wick’ overseer Chad Stahelski. While he isn’t likely to direct it, the fact that his 87Eleven company is involved means the set pieces should at least be inventive and impressive.

And there’s also a Sandler connection to this one too, albeit a loose one: Timothy Dowling, who has worked with the comedy star on several movies, wrote the ‘Loose Canons’ script, which is being kept under wraps for now.

But if we were to shove our speculation hat on, that title could refer to wayward guns gone missing, or possibly an out-of-control law enforcement officer.

Whatever the story, it’s in development at Lionsgate, but will likely have to cool its heels until Kelce’s schedule opens back up; an expanded cameo in a Sandler film is one thing –– the Kansas City Chiefs are kicking off the 2024 NFL regular season on September 5th.

Jimmy Fallon, Nicki Minaj Go on Hilariously Awkward ‘Date’ at Red Lobster

    NBC

The things people will do to get a lifetime’s worth of Cheddar Bay Biscuits from Red Lobster.

Superstar singer Nicki Minaj went on a hilariously awkward dinner “date” with “Tonight Show” host Jimmy Fallon at the franchise restaurant’s Times Square location.

As they feasted on seafood and drank Lobsteritas, Fallon asked Minaj if she wanted to eat a dish of pasta “Lady and the Tramp”-style, but the rapper shut him down. “No,” she replied with a definitive shake of her head.

At one point, Minaj revealed she’d been fired from Red Lobster … on multiple occasions!

“I have worked at a couple different Red Lobsters,” she explained. “And I’ve gotten fired from all three or four of them.”

Minaj redeemed herself when she and Fallon dressed up as servers and waited on several tables of surprised guests. She did such a great job, Fallon presented her with a card giving her free biscuits for life.

Fans in the “Tonight Show” audience on Wednesday night got a big surprise: Host Jimmy Fallon stepped aside during his monologue to let an “angry man” speak his mind — and that man turned out to be none other than Fallon’s predecessor, Jay Leno.

In his return to the late-night talk show, Leno showed that he’s still go it. The comedian ranted about a variety of topics that irritate him, from non-celebrity cable advertising to Amazon’s plans to open physical stores. It was a fun throwback to Leno’s days of hosting. Watch below.

Leno handed over the reins to Fallon in February 2014, completing his second stint as the “The Tonight Show” host. He had the job from 1992 to 2009, and then again from 2010 to 2014. In the years since, he’s taken on small TV and film roles, such as his cameo in “Ted 2” and his guest appearances on “Lip Sync Battle” and “Last Man Standing.”

“The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon” airs weeknights at 11:35 p.m. ET/PT on NBC.

After challenging Jimmy Fallon to “Wheel of Musical Impressions,” comedian Melissa Villaseñor was ready to blow away her competition.

The “Saturday Night Live” cast member definitely came to play when she appeared on “The Tonight Show” on Oct. 22. She had to sing three very different songs in the styles of three very distinct singers, and she nailed the challenge.  Villaseñor managed to first channel Gwen Stefani for “Three Blind Mice,” then Christina Aguilera for “When You Wish Upon a Star,” and finally Björk for “Rock-a-Bye-Baby.”

As usual, host Fallon participated in the game, too, and he at one point seemed at a loss for how he could follow up Villaseñor. Still, he also did a great job. With the help of auto-tune, Fallon got started with an impression of Post Malone singing “Itsy Bitsy Spider” and then went on to do “Rain, Rain, Go Away” in the style of Barry Gibb. It made for a solid competition, but we’d call Villaseñor the winner.

  • Mark Ruffalo ‘Fired’ for Spoiling ‘Avengers 4’ Title

Mark Ruffalo ‘Fired’ for Spoiling ‘Avengers 4’ Title

Mark Ruffalo on The Tonight Show
    NBC

Mark Ruffalo has a reputation for spoiling “Avengers” plots. You know it. He knows it. So he had some fun with it.

While on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” The Hulk actor “spoiled” the “Avengers 4” title — insisting the news was already out there.

The show bleeped Ruffalo out, going with the gag that it was a huge spoiler:

He was almost certainly just joking around. But you never know. So fans got to work analyzing what was bleeped. This fan came up with “The Last Avenger.”

    https://twitter.com/antovolk/status/1048873100199284736

Was it just a play on “The Last Jedi”? Will the title in fact be “The Last Avenger” — as a bookend to “Captain America: The First Avenger“? A new title rumor floating around suggested it’s “Avengers: Annihilation.” There was early talk that it was “Infinity Gauntlet” before that was shot down. We were pretty fond of the idea that it was “Avengers: End Game,” but the title is supposedly NOT said in “Avengers: Infinity War,” which would rule out “End Game.”

All of this is probably low-key irritating Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige. He seems to think the “Avengers 4” title build-up has gotten out of hand. It was never meant to be this deep. But fans caring too much about your studio’s movie is an excellent problem to have.

Joe and Anthony Russo directed both “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers 4: Whatever They Call It.” They responded to Mark Ruffalo’s title spoiler as part of this cheeky exchange:

    https://twitter.com/Russo_Brothers/status/1048412243266863104

Haha. The sad part of that joke is that Ruffalo may actually be done with his job as Bruce Banner/The Hulk. No firing necessary. So many changes are ahead in “Avengers 4,” including a goodbye for Chris Evans as Captain America. Chris Hemsworth also said his contract as Thor was ending with “Avengers 4.”

The original Avengers are stepping out of the spotlight. So Ruffalo being “fired” may just be a joke, but his Hulk may indeed take that “final exit” hobo walk off the screen.

“Avengers 4” is currently scheduled to open in the U.S. on May 3, 2019. The title should be officially announced any time now

    Tonight Show still
NBC via The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon/YouTube

There are already mysteries to unravel as we wait for “Big Little Lies” Season 2.

One of the big ones is whether or not Alexander Skarsgard (Perry Wright) will continue to appear on the HBO drama series. When the actor was a guest on “The Tonight Show” on Sept. 26, host Jimmy Fallon tried to get an answer out of him, but Skarsgard tried to dodge the question.

***Spoilers ahead if you haven’t watched the “Big Little Lies” Season 1 finale.***

After Perry fell to his death at the end of Season 1, it seemed unlikely that Skarsgard would return for Season 2, but as Fallon pointed out, there have been rumors that the actor was recently on set. The late-night host asked him directly if he’s in Season 2, and it gave Skarsgard serious pause.

He started and stopped a few times, telling Fallon that he doesn’t want to get in trouble. Eventually, he admitted that he was on set, but said he “can’t disclose what [he] did on set.” Skarsgard did throw out some possibilities, though.

“Maybe I was acting,” he said. “I might have been just moral support, might’ve made coffee for the ladies. I might have helped Meryl Streep with acting.”

Interesting. It feels like a game of Two Truths and Lie — just with more [big little] lies.

Elizabeth Olsen’s Cameos in Mary-Kate and Ashley Videos Were ‘Like After-School Care’

Elizabeth Olsen on The Tonight Show still
NBC via The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon/YouTube

Growing up the younger sister of Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen meant Elizabeth Olsen didn’t exactly have the average childhood.

The “Avengers: Infinity War” star was promoting her upcoming web series “Sorry for Your Loss” on “The Tonight Show” on Sept. 7 when host Jimmy Fallon asked her about having roles in Mary-Kate and Ashley projects as a kid. Her older sisters made about 60 videos, Olsen said, and it turns out that her appearances in them were “like after-school care” for her. When your sisters are entertainment moguls, making cameos in music videos is apparently not out of the norm.

Of course, Fallon didn’t let Olsen escape a throwback to her childhood. The late-night TV host showed a clip from the video “B-U-T-T Out,” which shows Olsen pouting as her big sisters sing about how she can’t tag along with them. Poor girl.

Olsen told Fallon that she only vaguely remembers filming her parts. Although she has seen them, she doesn’t really recall “the experience of doing it.” Luckily for her, the videos will be around forever.

  • Jimmy Fallon Was ‘Devastated’ by Trump Interview Backlash

Good ratings and buzz are to be had by comedians making fun of President Donald Trump — exhibit A: “Saturday Night Live.” But Jimmy Fallon is experiencing the flipside of that after a much-criticized, “softball” interview he conducted with the then-candidate last September.

“The Tonight Show” has fallen behind Stephen Colbert’s “Late Show” in the ratings (Colbert, who has been excoriating Trump recently, is exhibit B). And Fallon has finally opened up to the New York Times about the backlash he faced after Trump’s appearance, particularly over Fallon ruffling Trump’s hair.

“I’m a people pleaser. If there’s one bad thing on Twitter about me, it will make me upset,” he said. “So, after this happened, I was devastated. I didn’t mean anything by it. I was just trying to have fun.”

Since taking over “The Tonight Show,” Fallon has emphasized “fun” over pointed political commentary. Celebrity interviews usually include some kind of game, like “Lip Sync Battle.” But in the era of Trump, even the middle ground is seemingly dangerous territory, and Fallon acknowledged that people “have a right to be mad.”

Still, he defended the hair-ruffling moment. I didn’t do it to humanize him,” Mr. Fallon said. “I almost did it to minimize him. I didn’t think that would be a compliment: ‘He did the thing that we all wanted to do.’”

While Fallon is a people pleaser, he also doesn’t want to pander to public whims.

“I don’t want to be bullied into not being me, and not doing what I think is funny,”he said. “Just because some people bash me on Twitter, it’s not going to change my humor or my show.”
