    NEW ON DVD AND BLU-RAY

    ‘Hunter Killer’ (January 29)

Gerald Butler must be exhausted from saving the world all the time. This action thriller from the producers of “Olympus Has Fallen” takes Butler under the Arctic Ocean as the captain of a Navy submarine. When he uncovers a secret Russian coup, he must slip through enemy waters to stop WWIII from becoming a reality.

The movie arrives on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD on January 29 (and is already available on Digital HD). Bonus features include a behind-the-scenes featurette and audio commentary.

    ‘Suspiria’ (January 29)

Director Luca Guadagnino (“Call Me By Your Name“) goes from peaches and young love to the horrors surrounding a prestigious Berlin dance company. Dakota Johnson plays an aspiring dancer who enrolls, only to discover the company is run by a coven of witches. The movie is remake of a 1977 cult classic, but Tilda Swinton’s unbelievable performance in multiple roles makes this version completely unique.

The movie arrives on Blu-ray and DVD on January 29 (and is already available on Digital HD). Bonus features include three making-of featurettes.

‘The Nutcracker and the Four Realms’ (January 29)

This new take on the classic story takes a turn into the fantastical, following a young girl who journeys to a magical land to retrieve a key that will unlock an egg gifted by her dead mother. Music from Tchaikovsky’s “The Nutcracker Suite” is incorporated and ballerina Misty Copeland makes a cameo.

The movie arrives on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD, as well as Digital HD, on January 29. Bonus features include delete scenes, making-of featurettes, and an interview with Copeland.

    ‘Boy Erased’ (January 29)

Lucas Hedges missed out on getting his second Oscar nomination in three years in this intense drama about the teen son of Baptists parents who is forced to attend a gay conversion therapy camp. There, he struggles to understand his identity, his faith, and his relationships to his preacher father (Russell Crowe) and protective mother (Nicole Kidman).

The movie arrives on Blu-ray and DVD on January 29 (and is already available on Digital HD). Bonus features deleted and extended scenes and Q&As with the cast.

    ‘The Wife’ (January 29)

Watch why Glenn Close has been nominated for a billion awards for this movie and others, and why she might finally (finally!) win an Oscar for her nuanced performance in a story about the compromises, secrets, and betrayals one makes in a long marriage.

The movie arrives on Blu-ray and DVD on January 29 (and is already available on Digital HD). Bonus features include Q&As with Close and the cast.

‘In the Heat of the Night’: The classic drama starring Sidney Poitier that tackles race and police relations is always timely, but even more so in today’s political climate. The Blu-ray reissue has a new 4K digital restoration and new interviews with cast and crew.

‘Screamers’: The 1995 sci-fi action thriller gets its first Blu-ray release, which includes new interviews with cast and crew.

NEW VIDEO ON DIGITAL, DEMAND, AND STREAMING

    ‘At Eternity’s Gate’ (January 29)

Willem Dafoe earned an Oscar nomination for portraying the brilliant, troubled artist Vincent Van Gogh. Director Julian Schnabel’s movie is not a meticulous biopic, but rather a collection of scenes drawn from the Van Gogh’s letters, rumors and heresay, and even just plain invented stories. Available on Digital HD.

    NEW ON NETFLIX

    ‘Velvet Buzzsaw’ (February 1)

This satirical thriller from writer/director Dan Gilroy reunites him with his “Nightcrawler” stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Rene Russo. As the Netflix original movie’s trailer notes, “Something truly goddamn strange is going on” in L.A.’s contemporary art world. A collection of pieces created by a dead artist seem to have malevolent supernatural powers, targeted at collectors who are trying to profit off of them.

    ‘Jaws’ and Sequels (February 1)

Now, Steven Spielberg’s seminal shark thriller can scare the daylights out of you from the comfort of your couch. Follow it up (if you dare) with “Jaws 2” and “Jaws 3.”

The Nutcracker and the Four Realms
    Disney

The Nutcracker and The Four Realms” trailer is worth watching on repeat for the haunting “Just a Girl” cover alone. (The cover is by the artist Brix, and it just came out.)

The magical fantasy arrives in theaters in November, and Disney just dropped a new trailer and a new poster.

    Here’s the poster:

    Here’s the new trailer:

This may not be the intended focus, but both Keira Knightley and Matthew McFadyen in the same trailer marks another “Pride and Prejudice” reunion, and that has bewitched us body and soul.

Anyway, here’s the official movie synopsis:

“All Clara (Mackenzie Foy) wants is a key – a one-of-a-kind key that will unlock a box that holds a priceless gift. A golden thread, presented to her at godfather Drosselmeyer’s (Morgan Freeman) annual holiday party, leads her to the coveted key—which promptly disappears into a strange and mysterious parallel world.

It’s there that Clara encounters a soldier named Phillip (Jayden Fowora-Knight), a gang of mice and the regents who preside over three Realms: Land of Snowflakes, Land of Flowers and Land of Sweets.

Clara and Phillip must brave the ominous Fourth Realm, home to the tyrant Mother Ginger (Dame Helen Mirren), to retrieve Clara’s key and hopefully return harmony to the unstable world.

Starring Keira Knightley as the Sugar Plum Fairy, Disney’s new holiday feature film “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms” is directed by Lasse Hallström and Joe Johnston, and inspired by E.T.A. Hoffmann’s classic tale.”

“The Nutcracker and the Four Realms” dances into theaters November 2nd, 2018.

  • The Gorgeous ‘Nutcracker and the Four Realms’ Trailer Teases a New Twist on the Classic Tale

Disney’s upcoming live action retelling of the “Nutcracker” tale, titled “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms,” has been teased as a decidedly different take on the beloved Christmas classic. And now, with the release of the film’s first trailer, it looks like the flick will indeed live up to that promise.

The gorgeous teaser is jam-packed with fantastical imagery and lots of little details to delight fans who are already familiar with the famous Tchaikovsky ballet. (That mouse wallpaper behind Clara is a particularly clever bit of foreshadowing to the showdown with the Mouse King.) But there’s plenty of new stuff, too, including Clara (“Interstellar” star Mackenzie Foy) donning the titular character’s military-style uniform, and Morgan Freeman (playing Clara’s godfather, the mysterious Drosselmeyer) just looking generally badass.

“It’s Christmas Eve — a time of mystery, expectations,” Drosselmeyer says in the trailer. “Who knows what might happen?”

That’s part of the draw of “Four Realms,” which takes most of its inspiration from the original “Nutcracker” fairytale, “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King,” written by German author E.T.A. Hoffmann in 1816. The film finds Clara transported to another world, where she befriends a soldier (Jayden Fowora-Knight) and travels with him across the Land of Snowflakes, Land of Flowers, and Land of Sweets, where they meet the Sugar Plum Fairy (Keira Knightley). They then journey into the dreaded Fourth Realm, ruled by the menacing Mother Ginger (Helen Mirren). Misty Copeland stars as the Lead Ballerina, in the film’s only ballet sequence.

“The Nutcracker and the Four Realms,” directed by Lasse Hällstrom, is due in theaters on November 2, 2018.

  • Keira Knightley to Play Sugar Plum Fairy in ‘The Nutcracker’: Report

"Therese Raquin" Broadway Opening Night - Opening Night And Curtain CallDisney’s upcoming live-action adaptation of “The Nutcracker” is assembling an impressive cast, and the latest reported addition is quite sweet.

According to Variety, Keira Knightley is poised to join the ensemble, where she will play the Sugar Plum Fairy. She’ll join the previously announced cast of Mackenzie Foy (who plays young protagonist Clara), Misty Copeland (as the lead ballerina, starring in the film’s only dance sequence), and Morgan Freeman (playing Drosselmeyer, the mysterious uncle figure who gives Clara the titular toy, which later comes to life and leads Clara on a magical adventure).

As previously reported, this version of “The Nutcracker” — officially titled “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms” — isn’t based on the beloved Tchaikovsky ballet, but is rather a more direct adaptation of the novel that inspired it, “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King.” Since there’s only one dance sequence, it seems that the classic “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy” won’t make the cut, though perhaps director Lasse Hallstrom will opt to at least use the familiar music in the background.

With such a starry ensemble already, we imagine Disney will continue to fill the film’s ranks with high-profile stars. Stay tuned for additional casting announcements.

“The Nutcracker and the Four Realms” is slated to start production later this year. There’s no release date yet.

  • Morgan Freeman Joins Disney’s Live-Action ‘The Nutcracker’: Report

Morgan Freeman is set to join Disney’s upcoming live-action movie adaptation of “The Nutcracker,” according to a new report.

The Hollywood Reporter writes that the Oscar winner is currently in talks to join the ensemble, which already includes Mackenzie Foy (“Interstellar,” the “Twilight” movies) as the protagonist Clara, and America Ballet Theatre star Misty Copeland as the lead ballerina. According to THR, Freeman will play the character Drosselmeyer, a mysterious uncle-like figure to Clara who gives her the titular toy, which then comes to life and takes her on a magical journey.

“The Nutcracker” was famously adapted into the classic Tchaikovsky ballet, though this film version, called “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms,” will apparently draw more heavily from the ballet’s source material, “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King,” a story written by German author E.T.A. Hoffmann in the early 1800s. “The Four Realms” will reportedly feature only one dance sequence, starring Copeland (who’s making her feature debut in the flick).

Here’s the official logline for the film:

The story, set at Christmas time, follows a young girl named Clara whose favorite toy, a Nutcracker, comes alive. After he defeats the Mouse King, he takes Clara away to a magical kingdom inhabited by dolls.

Lasse Hallstrom is directing the flick, which doesn’t have a release date yet. It’s expected to begin production sometime this fall.

  • Misty Copeland Dances Into Disney’s Live-Action ‘Nutcracker’ Movie

2016 Breast Cancer Research Foundation Hot Pink PartyMisty Copeland is ready to jeté to the big screen.

The accomplished ballerina announced on Instagram that she is joining the cast of Disney’s live-action “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms” movie, based on Peter Tchaikovsky’s classic ballet. Copeland, the first African-American woman to be named a principal dancer with the American Ballet Theater, will play the lead ballerina in the film’s only dance sequence.

For those unfamiliar with “The Nutcracker” (really, though?), the story follows a young girl named Clara on Christmas Eve as she journeys into a fantastical realm filled with gingerbread soldiers battling mice.

This marks Copeland’s first movie role. Her life was the subject of the 2015 documentary “A Ballerina’s Tale,” and her memoir “Life in Motion: An Unlikely Ballerina” was optioned by New Line with the goal of turning it into a movie.
