Gena Rowlands was born on June 19th, 1930, in Madison, Wisconsin to banker father Edwin Myrwyn Rowlands and actress mother Mary Allen Neal.

Rowlands attended the University of Wisconsin and then opted to move to New York to study acting at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. There she met a fellow acting student, John Cassavetes and they married in 1954, which sparked a long professional career (more on that below) as well as a personal one. The pair were married until Cassavetes’ death in 1989.

Rowlands made her television debut in 1954 in ‘Middle of the Night’. That launched a long-running TV career that ran parallel with her movie work. She had a regular role on ‘Peyton Place‘ and earned the first of eight Emmy Award nominations for her poignant characterization of a mother facing the dual revelation that her son is a homosexual and that he is dying from AIDS in 1985’s ‘An Early Frost’.

She scored her first Emmy win for ‘The Betty Ford Story’ playing the former first lady. She captured another best actress Emmy for ‘Face of a Stranger’ and a best supporting actress trophy for ‘Hysterical Blindness.’

Rowland’s first movie role was in the comedy ‘The High Cost of Loving’ in 1958. She had a bit part in Cassavetes’s ‘Shadows’ before appearing in the western ‘Lonely Are the Brave’.

Although she worked with various directors over the next two decades, most of her films during that time were directed by Cassavetes. The duo had arguably their greatest success with ‘A Woman Under the Influence’ in in which she starred as a woman struggling to reintegrate with her family after having been hospitalized for a mental breakdown, and the mob drama ‘Gloria’ in 1980. Rowlands received Academy Award nominations for both roles.

The couple’s other acclaimed collaborations included ‘Faces’, ‘Machine Gun McCain’, ‘Minnie and Moskowitz’, ‘Two-Minute Warning’, ‘Opening Night’, ‘Tempest’, and ‘Love Streams’, in which she played opposite her husband as his sister). Other films included ‘The Spiral Road’, Woody Allen’s ‘Another Woman’, ‘Something to Talk About’, ‘Hope Floats’, ‘The Skeleton Key‘, ‘Broken English’ and ‘Six Dance Lessons in Six Weeks’.

In more recent years, Rowlands won over a whole new audience playing an aging woman suffering from Alzheimer’s in the 2004 romantic drama ‘The Notebook’. In 2015, she received an honorary Academy Award.

Rowlands is survived by her second husband, Robert, daughters Alexandra and Zoe, and filmmaker son Nick, who directed her in ‘The Notebook’.

At the time of writing, Rowlands’ cause of death was not announced, but she had been battling Alzheimer’s, her condition confirmed by Nick back in June.

  • Netflix Responds to ‘The Notebook’ Controversy After UK Users Complain About Alternate Version

Netflix Responds to ‘The Notebook’ Controversy After UK Users Complain About Alternate Version

    The Notebook
    New Line Cinema

There are some things you just don’t mess with, and “The Notebook” is one of them. Netflix recently learned this lesson the hard way after it added the film to its U.K. catalog and then had to respond to backlash from viewers.

The problem arose when people watched the film and saw that it lacked the bittersweet ending seen in the original version. Viewers tweeted complaints, lambasting the streamer for depriving them of their chance to ugly cry over the joint death of elderly Noah (James Garner) and Allie (Gena Rowlands). The tweets got pretty heated, as you’ll see below.

Enough people complained that Netflix felt compelled to respond. In a tweet Wednesday, the streamer assured people that no, it did not edit the film. Somehow, the service ended up with an alternate version of the movie, and it intends to “[get] to the bottom of it.”

Ironically, the ending of “The Notebook” that U.K. fans saw was closer to the one in the book it’s based on; in Nicholas Sparks’s novel of the same name, the ending is ambiguous, and you don’t see Noah and Allie die in each other’s arms. In fact, you learn in Sparks’s sequel, “The Wedding,” that they didn’t. (Sorry, but it’s true.) Still, you can’t argue with the emotional impact of the movie ending, and clearly, a lot of fans agree.

  • ‘The Notebook’ Is Turning Into a Broadway Musical

‘The Notebook’ Is Turning Into a Broadway Musical

    New Line Cinema

Allie and Noah’s love story is coming to Broadway. “The Notebook” is being adapted into a stage musical.

The 2004 romantic drama, based on the Nicholas Sparks novel, starred Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams as passionate young lovers Noah and Allie. Their love story is recounted by an elderly man (James Garner) to a dementia-stricken nursing home resident (Gena Rowlands).

The stage version is being developed by Bekah Brunstetter, a writer and supervising producer on NBC’s “This Is Us,” and indie folk singer Ingrid Michelson. Kevin McCollum and Kurt Deutsch are producing in association with author Sparks.

“When I first heard about ‘The Notebook’ potentially being turned into a musical, I was instantly drawn to the idea,” Brunstetter said in a statement. “The story hits home for me in two big ways: It takes place in my home state of North Carolina, and Alzheimer’s runs deep in my family.”

“I was sent a few songs Ingrid had already written for it, and that week, I spent my drives to and from work car-listening, memorizing, imagining the story unfold with music, imagining how I might layer worlds, dramatize memory, and before I even knew that I had to write the book for this, it was already starting to happen in my head. The older you get, it seems, the more invisible you become, and yet, you have so much to say — so putting an older couple at the forefront of a musical is thrilling to me.”
