Just like Steve McQueen before him, Ryan Gosling is the personification of cool on the silver screen!

The actor began his career on ‘The Mickey Mouse Club‘ and made his film debut opposite Denzel Washington in ‘Remember the Titans.’ Since then Gosling has gone on to earn two Academy Award nominations for Best Actor for his work in ‘Half Nelson‘ and ‘La La Land,’ and a Best Supporting Actor nomination for the blockbuster hit ‘Barbie‘.

Gosling has also become one of the most beloved movie stars working today appearing in such popular movies as ‘The Notebook,’ ‘Drive,’ ‘The Nice Guys,’ ‘Blade Runner 2049,’ and ‘The Gray Man‘.

The event, which has brought first looks at new movies and more to fans for years, is back this month, boasting 82 features, including 16 World Premieres, 4 International Premieres, 1 North American Premiere, 3 US Premieres, and 25 West Coast Premieres.

When and where is Beyond Fest 2024 happening?

This year’s event runs between September 25th – October 9th.

In partnership with the American Cinematheque and presented exclusively by distributor NEON, Beyond Fest will screen at the Egyptian Theatre, Aero Theatre, Los Feliz 3, and Vista Theatre.

Here’s what Head of Programming Evrim Ersoy has to say about this year’s fest:

“Combining a celebration of cinema whilst firmly focusing our gaze on the next generation of filmmakers has always been at the heart of the Beyond Fest. ‘Detective Knight: Independence’ Interview: Jack Kilmer

Opening in theaters, On Demand and digital January 20th, and on DVD and Blu-ray on February 28th is the new action movie ‘Detective Knight: Independence,’ which is the third and final film in the trilogy from writer/director Edward Drake (‘Breach’).

Hollywood legend Bruce Willis (‘Die Hard,’ ‘Pulp Fiction’) reprises his role as Detective James Knight, who must stop an unhinged former EMT worker (Jack Kilmer) who attempts a bank heist on Independence Day, and takes a hostage (Willow Shields) with close ties to Knight.

The son of actors Val Kilmer and Joanne Whalley, Jack Kilmer is probably best known for his roles in movies like ‘Palo Alto’ and ‘The Nice Guys,’ as well as recently voicing his father’s ‘Willow’ role in the Disney+ revival series.

Moviefone recently had the pleasure of speaking with Jack Kilmer about his work on ‘Detective Knight: Independence,’ his inspiration for the character, the action sequences, working with Bruce Willis, Willow Shields and director Edward Drake, and what it was like playing his father’s role on Disney+’s ‘Willow.’

Moviefone: To begin with, can you talk about your character, Dezi and your inspiration for the role?

Jack Kilmer: Well, a movie we referenced a lot was ‘Joker.’ Dezi is this anti-hero vigilante. He echoes a lot of the incel people that are unfortunately around in this day and age. For me, it was things like ‘Taxi Driver,’ and ‘Bad Lieutenant.’ We had Bruce Willis, so when we started we had a superhero amongst us. We started in this superhero land, and then we took it and ran with it.

I was talking with Ed and we were like “This is a real opportunity to make something really gritty and real, and something a lot of people can relate to in this country right now.” We just had the anniversary of January 6th. We even shot this movie not long after all of that stuff went down. We had tons of ideas about who this guy was and what American this guy was. Where do Americans go when they snap, when they lose their minds? What does that look like?

I don’t know where he is politically, this character. I didn’t align him with any particular political party. He consumes a lot of stuff on the internet, he’s very paranoid, he’s an outsider, and he is not accepted in society. I think a lot of people can at least relate to that. I don’t think the film points one direction. You root for him, and he’s an underdog in a way. Dezi is actually somewhat redeemable of a person and you get to watch him spiral and unravel.

You just root for him. The movie is from the perspective of the villain, which is unique. He’s just a person that’s really sick and suffering, and very paranoid, and you can see how along the way how gets there. What that brings up for me is that there’s a lot of people in this country that I would love to sit down and talk with, no matter what political position they take. Sometimes it’s good to unite, to come together even though you have different political views to someone else, and sit and talk to them because maybe you guys align on more than you think.

MF: Can you talk about Dezi’s relationship with Ally and working with Willow Shields?

Jack Kilmer: Willow is lovely and an absolute pleasure to work with. She really brought it. There’s a scene in the movie where we have a showdown with Mr. Bruce Willis and man, she brought it in that scene. For the character of Dezi, she’s the light and the anchor of the whole movie. She brings all the humanity to Dezi.

MF: What’s it like working with a legend like Bruce Willis?

JK: Well, he is a legend, and a boss, and a king. He shows up and he is Bruce Willis, and you know that.

MF: What did you learn from watching him work?

JK: Let me just say this. He could say anything, and it’s so powerful and effective. I don’t know where it comes from but the guy can deliver lines in an extremely powerful and effective way, and it’s all in him. That “Bruce Willis” is just in him and everyone’s energy changes when he’s around, and that’s a real thing. He’s a real star and a real celebrity from a time when you could be a massive star. He is that.

I was thinking about that today, Gorillaz is one of my favorite bands and he was in the Gorillaz music video when I was in middle school. The length of his career and thinking about how huge a star from my generation and the ’80s he is. I was like what? That’s so crazy!

MF: Can you talk about the weapons training you had for the movie and what was the most challenging action sequence for you to shoot?

JK: As far as the gun training, we practiced the utmost safety around all of those weapons, even though they were already modified to be as safe as possible with plugged barrels and blank rounds. They were completely safe and looked after at all times. I grew up around guns in New Mexico, so I take that very seriously from shooting target practice with my dad. It was a lot of fun to just blast off rounds.

However, like we’ve been talking about, 2021 was a time in history that was very scary for a lot of people, so I didn’t want to pick up a gun first thing in the morning. There’s also some fun elements to that as well. The hardest thing for me on this shoot was just the way we shot the whole thing in eight days.

That was the hardest thing about this movie because it really was eight days. It was a full feature length shot in eight days. So we were doing five, six pages a day of the script. That was really hard, but their whole distribution method and their way of shooting these movies, it works somehow.

That’s because they work really hard. Edward Drake, the director, it’s really remarkable how the guy makes these movies. I’ve never seen anything like it. If he got a bigger budget, I can imagine he what he could do with that and it would be amazing because he’s one of the most creative and hardworking people I’ve ever met.

MF: What’s it like shooting a movie in eight days and what was it like collaborating on this project with Edward Drake?

JK: On any set there’s days where you feel the pressure and get stressed. It was only until after we had wrapped the movie that I talked to Ed, and he told me, “Okay, I really felt the pressure for that.” He held it down. Everyone held it down and just worked super hard.

MF: Finally, what was it like for you to join the cast of Disney+’s ‘Willow’ series voicing your father’s role from the original movie and working with Jake Kasdan on the project?

JK: It was so epic. I love ‘Willow.’ My parents met on ‘Willow.’ Jonathan Kasdan is obsessed with the fact that both my parents are in the movie. He’s a lovely guy. We were emailing back and forth for a long time and he’s just fascinated that I exist and that my mom’s in the series. He just had so many questions for me.

My dad has health issues and basically, Jonathan was like, “Can you come help with some wild lines, and can you come help me with this in the edit?” I was like “Sure. I’ll come and do that.” But it ended up being really special because we just sat and talked about Madmartigan and the whole legacy and everything.

Here’s What ‘The Predator’ Changed After Shane Black’s Reshoots

The difference between “The Predator” before and after reshoots is literally night and day.

Director Shane Black‘s sci-fi film was originally going to come out in February, before moving to August, and now opening in theaters September 14.

A few months ago, star Keegan-Michael Key told CinemaBlend they had just finished reshoots, “and just about three-quarters of the third act was rewritten.”

Collider talked to Shane Black during Comic-Con, when the filmmakers were just finalizing the VFX before the release. Collider asked about the reshoots — aka “additional photography” — wondering what Black learned from the test screenings, and what did he go back to do? Here’s Black’s explanation:

“Part of it was that we were making the film and we were trying to jam a lot into a five-pound bag. Right? So we had a big appetite, and one of the things about that was, well, if you want to do all of this stuff with this much money, you probably need to shoot during the day because during the night would be prohibitive.

And then to our chagrin — and it’s on me — when I saw the footage during the day, this is the climax of the movie, [The Predator] doesn’t look right. He doesn’t look scary in the daytime. And so, enough people agreed. And then we decided to streamline the plot so we could afford to go back up and really just concentrate on the scarier elements and doing it at night.

So literally, as they’ve said, the difference is night and day. We took everything out of day and put it into darkness.”

Sounds like a lot of time and money, but hopefully the end result was worth it. “The Predator” opens in theaters September 14.

Liked ‘The Nice Guys’? Say Hello to ‘The Nice Girls’ TV Show

We’re not getting a sequel to action comedy “The Nice Guys,” but we are getting a TV series. Except without Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling. And not set in the ’70s.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Fox has greenlit a female-led reboot called “The Nice Girls.” Two as-yet-uncast women will play similar roles to the 2016 film, in which Gosling played a private eye and Crowe was a ruthless enforcer who became unlikely partners.

The TV series will have a contemporary setting, so don’t expect any parties where Earth, Wind and Fire is playing.

Michael Diliberti (“30 Minutes or Less“) will write the script and executive produce along with Ken Kao and Joel Silver, who produced the film, THR reports. Rodney Ferrell, the head of Silver Pictures Television, will produce with 20th Century Fox Television and Lionsgate.

It doesn’t sound like writer-director Shane Black, who helmed the film, will be directly involved in the reboot.

5 Reasons Why ‘Angry Birds’ Crushed the Competition at the Box Office

So much for the three-peat.

“Captain America: Civil War” could have come out on top for the third straight weekend. It could even have lost 45 percent of last weekend’s business (when it earned $72.6 million) and still outdistanced this weekend’s three new wide releases. Even after three weeks, you might still have expected the Marvel mega-movie to outdistance three seemingly-undistinguished newcomers: a period action comedy starring no-longer-a-box-office-draw Russell Crowe and never-really-a-box-office-draw Ryan Gosling; a Seth Rogen comedy sequel, and a cartoon based on an app that everyone thought was really cool six years ago.
Nonetheless, “The Angry Birds Movie” knocked down “Captain America,” along with “The Nice Guys” (pictured) and “Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising,” as easily as a short stack of pigs. The cartoon earned an estimated $39.0 million, about $1 million more than distributor Sony had predicted. “Civil War” had to settle for second, with an estimated $33.1 million (down 54 percent from a week ago), while “Neighbors 2” debuted in third with an estimated $21.8 million, and “The Nice Guys” premiered at No. 4 with an estimated $11.3 million.

Remember when the first “Angry Birds” game came out in 2009? You had to have the app on your phone in 2010. By 2011, maybe you’d moved on, but apparently, kids (and many grown-ups) all over the world still love game house Rovio’s furious Finnish feathered friends. After all, the movie has already earned an estimated $112.0 million overseas. And every time users played an “Angry Birds” game in recent months, they were either getting an actual or in-kind ad for the movie.

2. Marketing Blowout
The film reportedly cost between $73 and $80 million to make, but Rovio has spent more than $100 million marketing it. Plus, Sony and Rovio got at least another $300 million in promotional support from some 100 merchandising partners worldwide, including McDonald’s, Ziploc, Home Depot, Nestle, French car manufacturer Citroën, and Lego (which made six different “Angry Birds” construction sets available a few weeks ago).

That giant balloon of main character Red that you saw last Thanksgiving during the Macy’s parade? Not a coincidence. This is the biggest campaign Sony has ever mounted for an animated feature.
3. Fans Liked the Execution
It earned a B+ grade at CinemaScore, indicating decent (if not great) word-of-mouth from ticketbuyers. Critics were less kind, giving it a 42 percent fresh rating at Rotten Tomatoes, but that’s actually not so bad considering how poorly they rate most movies based on video games.

4. Adult appeal
Kids may not care, but grown-ups may have noticed that the voices come from performers they’ve liked in grown-up comic roles, including four “Saturday Night Live” stars (Simpsons” scribe Jon Vitti.

“Our movie operates on the sophistication of any sort of Judd Apatow comedy,” co-director Fergal Reilly recently told Entertainment Weekly. Then there’s the soundtrack, which, in addition to featuring contemporary stars like Blake Shelton and Charli XCX (who both have voice roles in the film), also features ’80s hits by Rick Astley, Scorpions, and Tone Loc that few viewers under 35 will appreciate.
5. Timing
Sony smartly moved the film up from its initial July 1 release date. As a result, “Angry Birds” is the first major animated movie in wide release since “Zootopia” back in March and will remain the only one until Pixar’s “Finding Dory” on June 17. So it has the family demographic locked up. Its competition wasn’t really competing for the same viewers, with “Neighbors 2” going after young adults and “Nice Guys” after older adults. “Captain America,” of course, went after all three groups, but apparently, it couldn’t withstand three new movies dividing up its audience.

Don’t cry for Cap, though. On Sunday, “Civil War” became the first 2016 release to earn more than $1 billion worldwide. And of course, it’s going to lead into future “Avengers” movies with “Infinity War.”
Meanwhile, Rovio spent so much marketing “The Angry Birds Movie” that it had to lay off 40 percent of its staff last summer. And despite the film’s global take so far of $151 million, “Angry Birds” is going to have to gross about $360 million worldwide just to break even (since about half that take will go to the theater owners). It may reach that mark, and a sequel is probably inevitable, but if Rovio is really going to turn this weekend’s chart-topping debut into a viable franchise, it’s going to have to knock down an awfully tall pig pile.
