‘The Jim Henson Hour’ was developed as a showcase for the Jim Henson Company’s various puppet creations, including the popular Muppet characters. This hour-long anthology series was hosted by Jim Henson and generally included two segments. The first segment, ‘Muppetelevision’, included comedy skits starring the Muppets, as well as frequent guest appearances by popular entertainers. It ran on ABC from 1996 to 1998 and reruns ran on Disney Channel from 1997 to 2002.

  • New Trailer: ‘The Muppets Mayhem’ Arrives in May

    K2p3nIJ7

Though they’ve usually been supporting characters (and of course the House Band of the Muppet Show), the Electric Mayhem are ready to step into the spotlight.

‘The Muppets Mayhem’ a new series headed to Disney+ on May 10th, will focus on Nora (Lilly Singh), an aspiring record producer, who with the help of her social media influencer sister, Hannah (Saara Chaudry), and Electric Mayhem super-fan, Gary “Moog” Moogland (Tahj Mowry), embark on helping the band record their first-ever album.

Co-created by Muppets veteran Bill Barretta and college friends Jeff Yorkes and ‘The Goldbergs’ creator Adam F. Goldberg, who also wrote the screenplay for ‘The Muppets Wizard of Oz’, the new show promises all the funk and madness you might expect from the band.

The idea for a series centered on the band began an unlikely locale: the Outside Lands music festival. In 2016, the Mayhem played a set there, sparking Barretta to wonder what possibilities the characters might have for further storytelling.

Here’s what he had to say to Entertainment Weekly,

“It was unbelievable. It was… one of the most amazing experiences I’ve had with the Muppets. There was something like 30,000 people that came to the park. I thought, ‘Well, there’s something there.’ What if this band went on the road? What if the band went on tour? And so, I started developing an idea for a show about the band because we don’t know that much about them.”

    Who are the Electric Mayhem?

In case you’re among those that have slept on the Mayhem, here are the basics…

The band –– and to give them their original full title, Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem –– consist of the following…

Band leader Dr. Teeth (big hair, bigger teeth) on vocals and keyboards.

Animal on drums (who, let’s face it, more people will recognize because he’s regularly seen among the more mainstream Muppets).

Sgt. Floyd Pepper (big orange ‘tache) on bass and vocals.

Janis (long haired hippie type) on vocals and lead guitar.

Zoot (blue hair, flat cap) on saxophone.

    Lips (yellow hair) on trumpet.

The band were designed by Muppet creator Jim Henson, alongside Bonnie Erickson and Michael K. Frith, and made their debut on ‘The Muppet Show’ pilot episode and have popped up in shows and movies ever since.

“We have the freedom to go anywhere with these characters — they’re not as well-known as the core characters. People recognize them, but we have the freedom to fill out their backstory and do whatever we want.”

We can expect a lot of fun music on the show, including plenty of covers and then segueing to more original tunes as the band writes the album. All 10 episodes of ‘The Muppets Mayhem’ will debut, as mentioned above, on May 10th. Can you picture that?

  • Restored Full Version of ‘The Muppet Christmas Carol’ Arriving

    1992's 'The Muppet Christmas Carol.'
    1992’s ‘The Muppet Christmas Carol.’

Christmas is a time for gifts and also for watching ‘The Muppet Christmas Carol’, which originally hit theaters in 1992 and starred Michael Caine as Ebeneezer Scrooge, alongside a smattering of other human actors and most of the key roles played by Kermit and the gang.

It has long since become an annual holiday favorite for many people, as much a part of Christmas tradition as turkey, trees and traumatic shopping experiences.

But for almost as many years, Muppet fans have been wondering when they might see missing song ‘When Love is Gone’ re-integrated back into the movie itself after so much time spent as a poor-quality deleted scene on home entertainment releases and as an extra on the Disney+ version.

It’s always seemed a surprising decision, since the song is a key emotional moment from Scrooge’s past and his heartbreaking decision to eschew true love Belle (Meredith Braun) for his pursuit of financial gain. The melody of the Paul Williams-penned song plays into Miles Goodman’s score and the final song ‘When Love is Found’ directly references it.

There is good news, then, for those that have loved the take on Charles Dickens’ Christmas classic tale of ghosts and redemption. As revealed during a 30-year retrospective panel for the movie at this year’s D23 Expo, the full movie will finally be available to watch for the first time.

Director Brian Henson told the D23 panel audience the story of how then-Disney boss Jeff Katzenberg demanded that the song be edited out of the movie after a test screening where he noticed that kids were getting restless through the mournful (yet also quite lovely) ballad.

Henson negotiated a deal: the song would be removed for the theatrical release but restored for home entertainment. Yet when the time rolled around for that, a proper negative couldn’t be found.

Despite a years-long search, nothing was turned up, at least until just recently, when a print containing the song was discovered, meaning that the full version could be made ready in 4K format for Disney+.

It’ll premiere on the streaming service on December 11th, though we’re still waiting to lean if it’ll become the main version of the movie or become part of the extras.

    24669

In related Muppets news, there was also an announcement about a new recording of a classic track from band The Electric Mayhem. With the group preparing to hit Disney+ next year with ‘The Muppets Mayhem’, they’ve released an updated version of “Can You Picture That?”, originally performed in 1979’s ‘The Muppet Movie’.

The new series follows The Electric Mayhem on their journey to record their first ever studio album. The old-school band is helped along the way by Lily Singh’s Nora, a young music executive with her finger on the pulse of the current music scene. Also starring in the series are Tajh Mowry, Saara Chaudry, and Anders Holm.

  • The Muppets are back with ‘The Muppets Mayhem’

    muppets
(L to R) Janice, Floyd Pepper, Lips, Dr. Teeth, Animal, and Zoot in Disney+’s ‘The Muppets Mayhem.’

Since acquiring the rights to the Muppet characters way back in 2004, Disney has been trying to find the right fit for Jim Henson’s beloved felt creations. Various movie, TV and web-based projects have appeared to differing degrees of success and the company is trying again with new Disney+ musical series ‘The Muppets Mayhem’.

This latest dip into the world of Kermit and co. will eschew the usual focus on the friendly host frog and some of the other stalwarts (though we predict they’ll show up at least in cameos) in favor of ‘The Muppet Show’s house group The Electric Mayhem Band.

The line-up for the groovy, enthusiastic group includes Dr. Teeth on vocals and keyboards, Animal on drums, Floyd Pepper on vocals and bass, Janice on vocals and lead guitar, Zoot on saxophone and Lips on trumpet.

For this new show, ‘The Goldbergs’ creator Adam F. Goldberg developed and wrote the initial script alongside Muppet expert Bill Baretta and fellow creative Jeff Yorkes.

Story-wise, the series will follow The Electric Mayhem Band as they go on an epic musical journey to finally record their first studio album. With the help of driven A&R music executive Nora (Lily Singh), the old-school Muppet band comes face to face with the current day music scene as they try to finally go platinum.

Singh, of course, is the YouTube personality-turned-chat show host and actress, and whose style would seem to be a good fit for the Muppet world.

And she’ll be working alongside some veteran Muppet performers for ‘The Muppets Mayhem’ including Barretta (Dr. Teeth), Eric Jacobson (Animal), Matt Vogel (Floyd Pepper), David Rudman (Janice), Dave Goetz (Zoot) and Peter Linz (Lips).

Goldberg, meanwhile, is no stranger to channelling nostalgia thanks to his sitcom, which adapts stories from his own childhood and comes stuff with pop culture references and icons for which he has a deep, abiding love.

The new series has reportedly been in the works for some time, the greenlight quietly flashing while deals with the Muppet team were hammered out.

“We are so excited to bring the story of The Electric Mayhem Band to the front and center of this new series. They’ve been entertaining audiences since ‘The Muppet Show’, which debuted 45 years ago, so it’s wonderful that these characters are finally getting to play lead rather than supporting roles,” says Disney Live Entertainment and The Muppets Studios’ David Lightbody in a statement.

Goldberg also excitedly tweeted about the new deal.

This follows the scrapped attempt by Josh Gad, Adam Horowitz and Eddy Kitsis to launch a new scripted series called ‘Muppets Live Another Day’, while the streaming service has had more success of late with ‘Muppets Haunted Mansion’, which crept in last October, co-written by Baretta.

The Muppets are a tough act to bring to screens – get the mix of comedy, wackiness and heart wrong and you’re left with the likes of 2015’s ‘The Muppets’, while short-form series ‘Muppets Now’ had a better time of it in 2020.

No official date has been announced yet, but ‘The Muppets Mayhem’ could be on screens next year.
