    Arriving on Disney+ on April 6 with the first two episodes (and six more to follow on a mostly weekly schedule) is ‘Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord’, the latest step in Dave Filoni’s animated adventures set in the galaxy far, far away.

    The voice cast for the show includes Sam Witwer (‘The Mist’), Wagner Moura (‘The Secret Agent’), Richard Ayoade (‘Submarine’), Dennis Haysbert (‘24’), Chris Diamantopoulos (‘The Boys in the Boat’) and David W. Collins (‘The Mandalorian’).

    While his recent promotion to joint chief of Lucasfilm means he won’t have quite as much time to play in the ‘Star Wars’ sandbox, Dave Filoni is still enjoying the chance to expand the reach of George Lucas’ creation, this time continuing the story of the former Darth Maul.

    By layering in crime thriller genre tropes and adding more to Maul himself, Filoni has delivered another smaller-scale animated success.

    Working with Matt Michnovetz to develop the series, Filoni blends the likes of ‘Heat’ with the ‘Star Wars’ milieu for a fun mix that gives Maul fans (yes, we know you’re out there) plenty to enjoy.

    And beyond the lead, there are several compelling characters contained within superior scripts.

    On the directorial front, supervising director Brad Rau brings a stylish noir touch to the show, while also keeping it of a piece with previous animated outings.

    Sam Witwer continues to find interesting new directions to take his character, and has really owned the role. Aside from him, Wagner Moura is good value as hard-bitten police detective Brander Lawson, aided by sidekick droid Two-Boots, voiced by a game Richard Ayoade.

    On the villainous side, Filoni continues his obsession with comedy droids, with this show’s MVP being Spybot (David W. Collins), a cackling delight.

    Even if you only know Maul from ‘The Phantom Menace’, chances are you will find something to enjoy here –– the action is intense, the characters compelling and the show as a whole fits well into the ‘Star Wars’ universe while also feeling fresh.

    What’s the plot of ‘Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord’?

    Set after the events of ‘Star Wars: The Clone Wars,’ this pulpy adventure finds Maul plotting to rebuild his criminal syndicate on a planet untouched by the Empire. There, he crosses paths with a disillusioned young Jedi Padawan who could be the apprentice he is seeking to aid him in his relentless pursuit for revenge.

    The latest trailer for new release ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’ reveals that Scorsese is among those lending his voice to a character from the movie.

    Jon Favreau directs ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’, which expands on the TV series he created with Dave Filoni (essentially, this is a new season of the show adapted into a big-screen adventure featuring Pedro Pascal’s stoic warrior and his diminutive, pop cultural icon of a sidekick.)

    Set in the chaotic period following ‘Return of the Jedi,’ the movie continues the show’s story: the evil Empire has fallen, and Imperial warlords remain scattered throughout the galaxy. As the fledgling New Republic works to protect everything the Rebellion fought for, they have enlisted the help of legendary Mandalorian bounty hunter Din Djarin (Pascal) and his young apprentice Grogu.

    Scorsese voices a CG-crafted Ardennian shopkeeper who Mando approaches to seek information. But upon learning he’s searching for a Hutt gangster (specifically, Jabba’s son), he’s quick to close up shop.

    While production has now wrapped on the next ‘Star Wars’ movie, spin-off ‘The Mandalorian & Grogu,’ there is still news to report on the film.

    With series co-creator Jon Favreau calling the shots, the movie sees the return of Pedro Pascal’s bounty hunter and his adorable green sidekick Grogu for more adventures in that galaxy far, far away.

    Now, according to Jeff Sneider, we know that ‘The Bear’s leading man Jeremy Allen White will be part of the movie, providing the voice of Rotta the Hutt.

    What’s the story of ‘The Mandalorian & Grogu’?

    The big announcement of the movie offered up no details on what the plot will be, but you have to figure it’ll continue the story of the characters’ journey from the show –– including Mando’s ongoing struggle with his cultural legacy and Grogu’s increasing Force powers.

    Plus there are plenty of dangling plot threads just waiting to be expanded or tied up in a big screen outing.

    Who is Rotta the Hutt?

    As his name suggests, Rotta –– original full name Rotta the Huttlet –– is the son of ‘Return of the Jedi’s sluglike crime boss Jabba.

    Created by Dave Filoni, he made his ‘Star Wars’ debut in the ‘Clone Wars’ movie, there voiced by David Acord.

    Nicknamed “Pedunkee Mufkin” (translated as Punky Muffin) by his father and also nicknamed “Stinky” by Ahsoka Tano, was a male Hutt and the son of Jabba the Hutt.

    During the Clone Wars, he was secretly kidnapped by the Confederacy of Independent Systems, which was orchestrated by Count Dooku with help from Ziro, Rotta’s great-uncle. The plot was meant to discredit the Jedi Order and scuttle negotiations between the Galactic Republic and the Hutts, but the Jedi were able to rescue him.

    He was later kidnapped and rescued again. We do have to wonder what fate will befall him in the new movie, but the choice of White to provide his voice points to him being more of a grown character this time around.

    Who else is in ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’?

    A lot about the film is still wrapped in secrecy, but alongside Pascal (and now White, at least via a recording booth), we know that Sigourney Weaver is in the cast.

    Deadline is also now reporting that Jonny Coyne will be reprising his relatively small role of Imperial warlord, who is part of the Shadow Council working with Giancarlo Esposito’s Moff Gideon.

    He’ll likely have a bigger part to play in the movie, especially since Gideon was sidelined at the end of the most recent season of the show.

    What has been said about the new movie?

    Here’s Favreau’s statement on the new movie:

    “I have loved telling stories set in the rich world that George Lucas created. The prospect of bringing the Mandalorian and his apprentice Grogu to the big screen is extremely exciting.”

    And this is what Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy said:

    “Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni have ushered into ‘Star Wars’ two new and beloved characters, and this new story is a perfect fit for the big screen.”

    And Filoni recently told Extra about working on the movie:

    “I’m very excited about it as well. Jon and I had a great time working on that, as we always do. It was great seeing Grogu. He’s become such a star, and it’s amazing how it’s evolved, what we can do now with the puppetry compared to Season One and where we are today in a film working with the team which I worked quite a bit with them on the puppetry. Legacy effects did a fantastic job, and what a wonderful little creation Grogu is.”

    What else is in development for big screen ‘Star Wars’?

    While the Mando movie is flying into first position, we do know that Dave Filoni is still putting the pieces together for his own film, while one that continues the story of Rey (Daisy Ridley) is in development from director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy but appears to keep hitting stumbling blocks and has been removed from the schedule for now.

    And then there’s James Mangold’s film, which explores the origins of the Jedi and early force users and is awaiting a release date.

    We’d guess that while Filoni (who promoted earlier this year to Chief Creative Officer at Lucasfilm) is still going full speed ahead on his movie, he’s also been busy figuring out a second season of ‘Ahsoka.’

    Here’s what he said about that:

    “I’m so well into that as well… I’ve been writing it, and I’m still the single writer on it, and so I’ve been enjoying doing that, but it’s a challenge, of course, and working some of these arcs through has been a challenge and making sure it’s all going to come out in a way that I think is exciting for fans. I know that they’re interested in where some of the things I developed in Season One. I’m pretty happy with it… Love working with Rosario [Dawson], so I can’t wait to get back to that.”

    Where else have I seen Jeremy Allen White?

    White these days is best known as –– and has received awards for –– driven chef Carmen ‘Carmy’ Berzatto in cooking drama ‘The Bear.’

    Before that, he was seen in ‘Shameless,’ ‘Homecoming’ and since he’s been in movies including ‘The Rental,’ ‘Fingernails’ and ‘The Iron Claw.’

    More recently, he’s been filming the Bruce Springsteen pic ‘Deliver Me from Nowhere’ (as Springsteen) and ‘The Bear’s fourth season will be with us next year.

    When will ‘The Mandalorian & Grogu’ be on screens?

    The Mando movie will be rocketing into theaters on May 22nd, 2026, so we still have a bit of a wait for that one.

  • ‘Star Wars: The Acolyte’ Cancelled After One Season by Disney+

    Bad news today for anyone who enjoyed the vengeful, High Republic storyline of ‘The Acolyte’.

    The series, which aired its first season on Disney+ this past June and July, has not been renewed for a second, according to Deadline’s sources. Neither Disney nor Lucasfilm has made an official statement on the matter, but the companies generally tend to let underperforming shows quietly fade like a Jedi becoming a Force ghost.

    While ‘The Acolyte’ received mixed-positive reviews from critics, it was the target of hate from certain toxic portions of the ‘Star Wars’ fandom and didn’t seem to gain the attention of the wider community that other series have.

    What was the story of ‘The Acolyte’?

    Created by ‘Russian Doll’s Leslye Headland, ‘The Acolyte’ was set in a galaxy of shadowy secrets and emerging dark-side powers in the final days of the High Republic era.

    It focused on Osha Aniseya (Amandla Stenberg), a former Jedi padawan-turned-engineer, who is unexpectedly reunited with the Jedi who was training her, Master Sol (Lee Jung-jae of ‘Squid Game’) when a mysterious assassin starts killing members of the Jedi order.

    As it turns out –– spoiler alert for those who haven’t watched the show –– the killer is her twin sister Mae (also Stenberg), who is on a vengeful quest to track down the people responsible for her community’s destruction.

    The cast for the show also included Manny Jacinto, Jodie Turner-Smith, Dafne Keen, Rebecca Henderson, Charlie Barnett, Dean-Charles Chapman and Carrie-Anne Moss.

    What’s happening with ‘Star Wars’?

    Despite the loss of ‘The Acolyte’, the wider ‘Star Wars’ universe is still thriving on big and small screens.

    Fellow series ‘Ahsoka’ has already scored a second season, and the latest series set in that galaxy far, far away, the ‘Goonies’-alike ‘Skeleton Crew’, docks on Disney+ in December.

    Darker, and more morally grey show ‘Andor’ will be back next year.

    And what is still the most successful Lucasfilm TV effort to date, ‘The Mandalorian’ is headed to cinemas, with Jon Favreau at work on ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’, due in theaters on May 22nd, 2026.

    What about Boba Fett?

    While ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’ offers the chance for the TV characters to make their movie debut, it doesn’t appear everyone is along for the ride.

    Spilling some Boba tea at a panel at Fan Expo Chicago at the weekend, actor Temuera Morrison indicated that bounty hunter Boba Fett seems unlikely to show up.

    Here’s what Morrison said (via Screen Rant):

    “I’m still waiting for a phone call to be quite honest. I think we’re just on the shelf for a little bit. Maybe we come off the shelf later.”

    It’s perhaps not too surprising given that Mando spin-off series ‘The Book of Boba Fett’ failed to capture the public imagination (at least not until it effectively became ‘The Mandalorian’ Season 2.5).

    So, ‘The Acolyte’ has been cancelled. Perhaps Boba Fett is cancelled for now too…?

    There have been rumors for a while now –– largely driven by the actor himself –– that ‘Breaking Bad’ veteran Giancarlo Esposito had found another genre nook to conquer following appearances in the likes of ‘Star Wars’ series ‘The Mandalorian‘ and Prime Video’s ‘The Boys’.

    He’s been dropping hints about a big-screen role in the MCU, which drove speculation wild around a debut as a major character. Now, according to The Hollywood Reporter, we know a bit more about where he’ll show up –– and its turns out, he’ll be a villain in ‘Captain America: Brave New World’.

    What’s the story of ‘Captain America: Brave New World’?

    While the major plot points are, in Marvel tradition, still mostly a mystery, the new movie –– which sees Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson/Captain America (a role his character first took on in small screen outing ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’) dealing with a crisis at the highest levels of government.

    Described by Marvel boss Kevin Feige at CinemaCon as more of “relatively grounded action film” (think ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier‘) albeit set within the MCU, the movie will nevertheless feature plenty of drama (and probably a Hulk).

    Who is appearing in ‘Captain America: Brave New World’?

    Alongside Mackie, we can expect to see Harrison Ford (who inherits the role of Thaddeus ‘Thunderbolt’ Ross from the late William Hurt, with the character now President of the United States), Liv Tyler (as Betty Ross from ‘The Incredible Hulk’), Tim Blake Nelson (as villain Samuel Sterns/The Leader also from the MCU Hulk movie), Danny Ramirez (as ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’s Joaquin Torres, who is the new Falcon) and Rosa Salazar in an unknown role.

    As to who Esposito is playing? There are no concrete details yet beyond mention of him as a baddie. We’re left to wonder whether he’ll be a one-off or if this is setting up someone who will recur in later movies (given the actor, our guess is the latter).

    What has happened with ‘Captain America: Brave New World’ so far?

    Directed by Julius Onah, the movie had its original shoot in early 2023, and after test screenings is now headed for some extensive (though not as much as, say, ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ or ‘The Marvels’) addition footage work, with ‘Moon Knight’s Matthew Orton having cranked out on new script material, which presumably includes Esposito’s character.

    There has been much chatter about the movie being in trouble, but extra footage filming is built in to Marvel movie schedules.

    Still, there is pressure on the company to get its hit ratio back up after the likes of ‘The Marvels’ didn’t score well at the box office. It only has one movie arriving this year (‘Deadpool & Wolverine’, landing July 26th) and has been having trouble getting other projects, including ‘Blade’ off the ground.

    ‘Captain America: Brave New World’ itself has shifted release dates at least once already, from its original slot, which was inherited by Deadpool’s latest outing.

    Pending another shift, Marvel wants the movie in theaters on February 14, 2025.

    For the past few years, ‘Star Wars’ has lived on the small screen much more than cinemas thanks to the success of ‘The Mandalorian’. But while there has been talk of a film set in the same universe from Dave Filoni, Disney and Lucasfilm have now announced that its Jon Favreau who is heading up the shows’ transition from TV to theater.

    ‘The Mandalorian & Grogu’ is the first movie announced as actually entering production.

    What’s the story of ‘The Mandalorian & Grogu’?

    The big announcement of the movie offered up no details on what the plot will be, but you have to figure it’ll continue the story of the characters’ journey from the show –– including Mando’s ongoing struggle with his cultural legacy and Grogu’s increasing Force powers.

    Plus there are plenty of dangling plot threads just waiting to be expanded or tied up in a big screen outing.

    We don’t yet know who else is behind the movie, but surely Filoni –– Favreau’s creative partner in all things ‘Star Wars’ –– has had a hand in the script.

    Here’s Favreau’s statement on the new movie:

    “I have loved telling stories set in the rich world that George Lucas created. The prospect of bringing the Mandalorian and his apprentice Grogu to the big screen is extremely exciting.”

    And this is what Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy said:

    “Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni have ushered into ‘Star Wars’ two new and beloved characters, and this new story is a perfect fit for the big screen.”

    What else is in development for big screen ‘Star Wars’?

    While it appears the Mando movie is flying into first position, we do know that Dave Filoni is still putting the pieces together for his own film, while one that continues the story of Rey (Daisy Ridley) is on the way from director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy and writer Steven Knight, due in 2027.

    And then there’s James Mangold’s film, which explores the origins of the Jedi and early force users and is awaiting a release date.

    We’d guess that while Filoni (who was recently promoted to Chief Creative Officer at Lucasfilm) is still going full speed ahead on his movie, he’s also been busy figuring out a second season of ‘Ahsoka’, which may well lead to his big screen outing.

    When will ‘The Mandalorian & Grogu’ be in theaters?

    Lucasfilm has yet to confirm a release date, but a 2024 shoot points to a potential return for ‘Star Wars’ Christmas premieres in 2025.

    • ‘Loki’s second season scored huge viewership on Disney+ upon its return last week.
    • Only ‘The Mandalorian’s Season 3 premiere this last March had higher initial viewership.

    After some less than thrilling reviews and audience figures for recent Marvel series such as ‘Secret Invasion’, Disney must be breathing a sigh of relief and offering up blessings to the God of Mischief.

    Because the first episode of Season 2 for ‘Loki’, starring Tom Hiddleston, has racked up some healthy viewing figures.

    What were the viewing figures for the premiere of ‘Loki’ Season 2?

    The premiere of the new season, which dropped on Thursday, October 5th, has garnered 10.9 million views globally within three days of becoming available for streaming, at least according to Disney’s own calculations.

    And the Marvel series was not just popular with viewers, but also critics. Season two of ‘Loki’ holds an 88% score on review site Rotten Tomatoes, which makes it certified “fresh”. That goes along with a stellar 94% audience score on the site.

    So clearly, people are happy to see the return of Loki and the Time Variance Agency. And we also enjoyed the latest episode.

    In fact, the only series that has scored higher than ‘Loki’ is the third season of ‘The Mandalorian’, which landed on Disney+ this past March. Mando’s triumph is not really a surprise since there was plenty of pent-up demand for the return of the ‘Star Wars’ series.

    ‘Loki’ similarly benefitted from fan anticipation since Season 1 landed all the way in 2021.

    The new season picks up immediately in the aftermath of the shocking season finale when Loki (Tom Hiddleston) finds himself in a battle for the soul of the Time Variance Authority.

    Along with Mobius (Owen Wilson), Hunter B-15 (Wunmi Mosaku) and a team of new and returning characters, Loki navigates an ever-expanding and increasingly dangerous multiverse in search of Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino), Judge Renslayer (Gugu Mbatha-Raw), Miss Minutes (Tara Strong) and the truth of what it means to possess free will and glorious purpose.

    The ensemble for the new season also features (as mentioned) Ke Huy Quan, plus other new recruits Rafael Casal, Kate Dickie and Liz Carr.

    Returning from Season 1 is Eugene Codero as Casey, a low-ranking TVA worker who was shown as a Hunter in a parallel timeline at the end of that first season but will be back in his original role to help Loki and co. Jonathan Majors, meanwhile, is once more playing another Kang variant, this time a 19th century professor named Victor Timely (first glimpsed in an end credits scene of ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’) who has a strong connection to the organization.

  • ‘Star Wars’: Lando Series Will Now be a Movie

    While the small-screen ‘Star Wars’ universe is enjoying a positive resurgence thanks to ‘Ahsoka’ (which recently released its fifth episode), it appears that there are changes afoot for one of the future shows in development.

    While we learned back in July that Donald Glover –– who, of course, played the younger Lando Calrissian in ‘Solo: A Star Wars Story’ –– and brother/creative partner Stephen were taking over the writing of the ‘Lando’ series.

    The show (as it was at the time) was to chronicle the further adventures of the gambler and rogue years before he starts running Cloud City (and is played in the movies by Billy Dee Williams).

    They were replacing ‘Dear White People’ and ‘Haunted Mansion’ director Justin Simien, who dropped out of the ‘Lando’ series to focus on ‘Mansion’, which hit theaters at the end of July.

    ‘Lando’ switching to become a movie

    While we hadn’t heard much about the Glover siblings’ plan for Lando (obviously they were not able to kick off writing scripts because of the ongoing writers’ strike), it does appear that things have now changed.

    Appearing on the Pablo Torres Finds Out podcast, Stephen Glover revealed the decision:

    “It’s not even a show… The idea right now is to do a movie. Right now, because of the strike, it’s kind of like telephone, all of the information.”

    That’s all he could say –– Lucasfilm and Disney really don’t like much information on future projects getting out there before they can officially announce.

    But despite no official word yet from either company, trade publications such as Variety and Deadline did get them to confirm the new development.

    Donald Glover has previously said he would want to reprise the ‘Solo’ role, admitting to GQ (via Deadline) in April that he enjoyed playing him and is looking to continue so:

    “I would love to play Lando again. It’s a fun time, being him. It just has to be the right way to do it. Time is precious. The past couple of years, this pandemic shit, it really had people experience time… People realize their time is valuable. You only get so much. I’m not interested in doing anything that’s going to be a waste of my time or just a paycheck. I’d much rather spend time with people that I enjoy. It just has to be the right thing, and I think it could be. Lando is definitely somebody I like to hang out with,”

    The future of ‘Star Wars’ on the small screen

    So, that’s one less series headed our way from the ‘Star Wars’ galaxy and one more movie.

    But it’s not like we’ll all be starved for Jedis, Sith and Grogu. With ‘Ahsoka’ still to run for a few more weeks, we’ll then see ‘Skeleton Crew’ from director Jon Watts, starring Jude Law and ‘The Acolyte’ (from ‘Russian Doll’ co-creator Leslye Headland.

    Plus, there are new seasons of ‘Andor’, ‘The Mandalorian’ and ‘The Bad Batch’ at various stages of development along with new animated TV Movie ‘A Droid Story’.

  • James Mangold on his ‘Borderline R-Rated’ ‘Boba Fett’ Movie

    Iconic ‘Star Wars’ bounty hunter Boba Fett made a big return to our screens with ‘The Mandalorian’ and linked series ‘The Book of Boba Fett’. But if director James Mangold had had his way, the character would have relaunched into the pop cultural consciousness via a movie.

    Except… it didn’t quite work out that way. Though it was never officially announced, reports surfaced back in 2018 about Mangold’s attachment to a movie about the character originally introduced in ‘The Empire Strikes Back’ and who had appeared to meet an ignominious end in the belly of the Sarlacc creature in ‘Return of the Jedi’.

    Yet later that year, Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy said later that year that it wouldn’t come to fruition.

    So, what happened?

    The problem with Boba

    Two big factors contributed to the end of the Boba Fett film. First, ‘The Mandalorian’ was in development, and had its own take on the character. And, as we all know, it became a huge sensation, a jolt of nostalgia that also charted new stories and introduced the cute merchandising factory that is Baby Y… Sorry, Grogu… into the world.

    Secondly, as it turns out. Mangold was going for a mature approach to the character, which is perhaps not all that shocking given his work on ‘Logan’, which did something similar with Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine. And that was an issue for Lucasfilm, which was looking for family friendlier offerings…

    Here’s what Mangold told the ‘Happy Sad Confused’ podcast about it:

    “At the point I was doing it I was probably scaring the s**t out of everyone. I was making much more of a borderline R-rated, single planet spaghetti Western. They probably would never be able to embrace Baby Yoda if I had made that. It didn’t really belong in the world I was kind of envisioning.”

    And Mangold went further into the contrast between his ideas and the Lucasfilm regime’s:

    “In a moment of corporate realignment or whatever happened with the Han Solo movie, they just suddenly decided they weren’t making pictures like that, and the opportunities in streaming presented themselves. I was just listening to [spaghetti Western composer] Ennio Morricone all day, all night, and typing away. I’m not sure it ever would have happened. I’m not sure it was in anyone’s plans, what I was thinking.”

    The future for Mangold and ‘Star Wars’

    No-one needs to feel bad for Mangold, though. He was instead handed the chance to direct ‘Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny’ for Lucasfilm, which has just arrived in theaters.

    And the company is clearly happy with what he did on that movie because Mangold will be getting a second shot at ‘Star Wars’ with a new movie set many years before the Skywalker saga that explores the early days of Force users.

    Mangold said this about the new movie to io9:

    “When I mentioned to [Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy] the idea that I had about going backward –– really far backward –– I was surprised that it excited her and the other wonderful people she works with at Lucasfilm. For me, it’s about, I want to be part of the saga, but I also don’t want to be holding so much lore in the air that you can hardly tell a story. And what I really wanted to do, what I told her, was just can we make a kind of the ‘Ten Commandments’ of the Force, you know? A kind of origin story of how the Force came to be known, understood, wielded, and harnessed.”

    There’s no release date set yet for the movie, though depending on how development progresses, it may end up taking one of the recently announced Disney schedule slots.

    Like a general assembling an army, Ridley Scott has been busy gathering the acting troops he needs for his ‘Gladiator’ sequel. And the latest recruit is someone who already has quite the pop cultural cache. Pedro Pascal, currently best known for ‘The Mandalorian’ and ‘The Last of Us’, is now aboard the movie.

    He’s just the latest name to sign up for the much anticipated (and long gestating) epic, which will continue the story Scott began in the 2000 original, albeit with a different character.

    What do we know about the ‘Gladiator’ sequel so far?

    The original, of course, told the story of Roman General Maximus (played by Russell Crowe), betrayed by his rulers and thrown into life as a gladiator. But even as he fights for his life, he ends up getting revenge on those who wronged him.

    As for the sequel, it’ll shift the story forward to focus on Lucius.

    He, you may recall, was the son of Lucilla (Connie Nielsen, who is returning for the sequel) and the nephew of Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix), the son of Roman leader Marcus Aurelius who murdered his father and seized the throne. Commodus wound up in the gladiator ring with Maximus who, though mortally wounded, skewered the emperor before fading into the great. Maximus saved the Lucius and Lucilla while avenging his own family and left a strong impression on the young boy.

    ‘Aftersun’s Paul Mescal is starring as the adult Lucius, while ‘The Banshees of Inisherin’s Barry Keoghan, meanwhile, is playing the primary antagonist, Roman Emperor Geta (a fictional take on a real-life ruler). We can certainly see Keoghan as a Commodus-style troublemaker.

    And that’s without mentioning the other big star draw for the new movie –– ‘Gladiator 2’ also marks Scott’s reunion with ‘American Gangster’s Denzel Washington, though again his role is being kept quiet beyond it being described as “bad-ass”.

    More recently, ‘Stranger Things’ Joseph Quinn also joined the movie in an unknown role, and Djimon Hounsou is expected to return as Juba, a gladiator who befriended Maximus.

    As for Pascal? His part, according to Deadline, remains a mystery for now. But we are wary of him being anywhere near arenas of conflict after what happened to his character Oberyn Martell in ‘Game of Thrones’. We won’t go into major spoilers in case you’re still catching up on the show (even if it finished in 2019, but to sum up… ouch).

    Scott has the original movie’s costume designer Janty Yates and production designer Arthur Max, along with cinematographer John Mathieson, and the cameras are rolling.
