  • Jennifer Lawrence Says ‘It’s Too Soon’ for ‘Hunger Games’ Prequels

There’s been a lot of speculation lately that we may one day see prequels to the recently-wrapped “Hunger Games” series. And while by design they wouldn’t include Jennifer Lawrence‘s Katniss Everdeen, the actress still thinks that the planned spinoff films may not be the best idea.

Lawrence touched on that subject during a recent interview with Variety at the premiere of her new film “Joy,” where she chatted with the trade about the possibility of “Hunger Games” prequels. The actress confirmed what we suspected — Katniss definitely won’t be in them — and made it clear that she’s not on #TeamSpinoff.

“I wouldn’t be involved,” Lawrence told Variety. “I think it’s too soon. They’ve got to let the body get cold, in my opinion.”

We side with Lawrence on this, especially since “Mockingjay — Part 2” only just premiered a few weeks ago. The idea of “Hunger Games” prequels and spinoffs has been floated since at least the time that “Mockingjay — Part 1” premiered, when director Francis Lawrence discussed the possibility in relation to another soon-to-be-revived franchise, “Harry Potter.” But “Potter” prequel “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” waited five years to revisit J.K. Rowling’s wizarding world (“Deathly Hallows Part 2” bowed in 2011, and “Beasts” is due out in 2016); a similar delay would seem appropriate for Suzanne Collins’s series, too.

Nothing is set in stone just yet, so these prequels may never materialize after all. (And based on the ho-hum box office for “Mockingjay — Part 2,” it may not be financially beneficial for studio Lionsgate to return to the well, either.) But we want to warn filmmakers to be careful with the “Games”‘s legacy — after all, we all saw what greed did to the citizens of the Capitol.

  • Why Did ‘In the Heart of the Sea’ Sink at the Box Office?

On paper, “In the Heart of the Sea” may have looked like a no-brainer: an IMAX-scale adventure epic, made by an A-list director and starring the guy who plays Thor. Plus, it had the weekend all to itself, with no new wide-release competition.

So why did “Sea” sink like a stone at the multiplex? Ron Howard‘s $100 million film opened in second place, behind the four-week-old “Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 2,” earning just $11.0 million, according to Sunday estimates. That’s at the low end of what was predicted, though few expected it to do better than $15 million anyway.

Looking back, it should have been obvious why the whaling-ship saga would flounder, though there were also some late-breaking problems that the film’s producers and distributors might not have anticipated. For instance:
    1. The Director
Howard’s had an enviable career, filled with critical and commercial smashes. But aside from the two movies he adapted from Dan Brown’s best-sellers (“The Da Vinci Code” and “Angels & Demons“), he hasn’t directed a film that’s grossed more than $62 million domestically in 14 years, since “A Beautiful Mind.”

His last feature, car-racing drama, “Rush,” grossed just $27 million here, though it cost just $38 million to make and ultimately earned a profit via overseas grosses. But with “Sea” costing a reported $100 million, Howard’s recent track record doesn’t seem to justify risking that big a budget on his movies.

    2. The Star
Chris Hemsworth, of course, was the star of Howard’s “Rush.” That reteaming alone should have been enough to give the studio pause. In fact, there’s no indication that Hemsworth is any kind of box office draw outside his Marvel movies and “Snow White and the Huntsman.” When he has to carry a movie on his own, he’s never made one that’s grossed more than $45 million in North America. Again, that’s not the kind of track record on which you risk a nine-figure budget.
    3. The Studio
“Sea” is one of many ill-conceived projects Warner Bros. released this year, arguably one of the studio’s worst in its history. There were several expensive, high-profile flops, including “Jupiter Ascending,” “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.,” and “Pan.” (Not to mention cheaper bombs like “Hot Pursuit,” “Entourage,” and “Our Brand Is Crisis.”) Warners only released two movies in 2015 (“Mad Max: Fury Road” and “San Andreas“) that grossed more than $100 million in North America.

    4. The Reviews
Critics tend to like Howard’s movies; “Rush” actually earned rave reviews for both its human drama and its action sequences. But “Sea” has garnered only a 43 percent fresh rating at Rotten Tomatoes. No doubt Warners was counting on better reviews than that for a Howard movie released at the height of awards season.

And good reviews are still important when it comes to persuading the older ticketbuyers who were the apparent target audience for “Sea.” After all, exit polling found that 68 percent of those who saw the film this weekend were over 35 years old. And those viewers gave the movie a B+ at CinemaScore, which indicates only so-so word-of-mouth.
    5. The Marketing
Howard is good with tales of adventure and people struggling in dire circumstances, from “Apollo 13” to “Rush.” But it’s hard to get anyone, even older viewers, interested in 19th-century all-male sailing adventures. (Even 2003’s excellent “Master and Commander,” an adaptation of a popular novel starring then-hot Russell Crowe, earned just $94 million in North America.) Warners’ marketers touted “Sea” as being based on the true-life disaster that inspired Herman Melville to write “Moby-Dick,” as if being the source of a book you were forced to read in high school but couldn’t finish is a selling point. They also emphasized the whale over Hemsworth, missing the mark with his audience as well.

    6. The Competition
“Sea” didn’t have to compete against any other new wide releases this weekend, but it still had to face three holdovers that were apparently stronger than Warners anticipated. Besides “Mockingjay,” there was Pixar’s “The Good Dinosaur” (in third place with an estimated $10.5 million) and Warners’ own “Creed,” a rare 2015 hit for the studio that’s doing better than anyone predicted. It was down just 32 percent this weekend to an estimated $10.1 million. (To date it’s earned $79.3 million; by the end of the year, it could be Warners’ third 2015 release to cross the $100 million mark.) The distance between first-place “Mockingjay” and fourth-place “Creed” was just $1.2 million, so the competition was very tight.
    7. The Force
While “Sea” didn’t have any new wide-release rivals this weekend, it does have one that hasn’t even opened yet: next Friday’s “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.”

Given the frenzied pre-sales for the film, it’s possible that both advance ticket buyers and those who are waiting until December 18 simply weren’t going to spend much money at all on this weekend’s offerings. Indeed, the total sales at the multiplex for Friday through Sunday were just $75.1 million, down 23 percent from last weekend’s already dismal numbers, making this 2015’s second-worst weekend to date.

At least the prospect of all that “Star Wars” money means that sales for the final two weekends of the year should show an astronomical improvement over this “Sea”-sick session.

  • A ‘Hunger Games’ Prequel Could Happen (But It Won’t Star Katniss)

The end is nigh for the “Hunger Games” franchise, with “Mockingjay — Part 2” hitting theaters today. It’s sad to say goodbye to Katniss and co. — but could there be more stories to tell in Panem?

“Mockingjay” director Francis Lawrence tackled that question in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, in which he said that if the “Hunger Games” films were to continue, he’d be interested in making a prequel.

“The interesting part of the story for me is to go back 75 years earlier and see how everything became the way it is,” Lawrence told EW. “I’m sure if [author] Suzanne [Collins] were to get inspired and decide there’s another story that’s important for her to tell that exists within the world of Panem and whether about the Dark Days, another character, or another set of Games, whatever that could be, I’m sure it would be great. And I’d loved to be involved, absolutely.”

While that’s exciting, Lawrence said that any new “Hunger Games” film would have to focus on different characters, since “with the end of this story, we’ve reached the end of Katniss’s story.”

“I think that Suzanne created such an iconic character, and I think she’s the main reason why everyone comes back to these stories,” Lawrence continued. “Now, that’s come to an end.”

The director faced similar questions about continuing the series when “Mockingjay — Part 1” rolled around, and seemed less sure of plans for new films only a year ago. Perhaps Lawrence just isn’t ready to say goodbye to these films yet, either. We can’t blame him.

  • Jennifer Lawrence Falls Again on Red Carpet

'Los Juegos Del Hambre: Sinsajo - Part 2' Madrid PremiereOops, she did it again! Jennifer Lawrence took yet another tumble on the red carpet, this time at the Madrid premiere of “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2.”

Lawrence was wearing a long, flowing Ralph Lauren gown and very high heels, and it appears she caught a shoe in her dress while walking up the stairs. A fan caught the spill on camera:

This is not the first time the Oscar winner has wiped out at a public event. She very memorably tripped on the stairs while accepting her Academy Award. At the following year’s ceremony, she fell getting out of her car. She’s also experienced near trips, a few minor wardrobe malfunctions, and just a few days ago, she awkwardly and accidentally kissed “Hunger Games” co-star Natalie Dormer at the movie’s London premiere.

Of course, her clumsiness just makes Lawrence all the more lovable. Want more stuff like this? Like us on Facebook.

  • Jennifer Lawrence Accidentally Kisses Natalie Dormer at ‘Hunger Games’ Premiere

BRITAIN-ENTERTAINMENT-CINEMA-HUNGER GAMES-MOCKINGJAYJennifer Lawrence kissed a girl — and she liked it!

The actress had yet another adorably awkward moment on the red carpet of last night’s London premiere of “Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2.” Lawrence came up behind co-star Natalie Dormer, who was giving an interview, and greeted her with a kiss. It was meant for the cheek, but Dormer turned her head and their lips met.

“Oh my god!” Lawrence shrieked, jumping back with a giggle. “We just kissed on camera. And I liked it.”
The “Game of Thrones” actress wasn’t fazed at all at having a “bit of Jennifer Lawrence” on her face. Then again, who’d complain about getting smooched by JLaw?

This is the final tour for Lawrence, Dormer, and the other stars of “The Hunger Games.” The saga ends with “Mockingjay – Part 2” on November 20, as Katniss Everdeen leads the revolution to the streets of the Capitol in the hope of deposing the evil President Snow.

  • ‘The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2’ Teaser Promises ‘Epic Finale’

Hunger Games Mockingjay Part 2The epic finale of “The Hunger Games” is just a few weeks away!

A new TV teaser for “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2” aired during last night’s World Series game, and it was filled with heart-pumping action, soaring music, and ride-or-die speeches. “This is the end,” Haymitch (Woody Harrelson) tells Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence).

“If you end all of this, our lives — they mean something,” Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) says. No pressure!
There’s not a whole lot of new footage, though we get a couple of glimpses of the battle in the trap-filled Capitol streets. The teaser starts with call-outs to the previous three movies, and includes flashes of all the characters we’ve come to know and love (or hate), including Gale (Liam Hemsworth), Alma Coin (Julianne Moore), Johanna Mason (Jena Malone), and the villainous President Snow (Donald Sutherland).

“The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2” opens in theaters November 20.

  • ‘The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2’ Final Trailer Will Give You Chills

mockingjay, mockingjay part 2, final mockingjay trailer, mockingjay final trailer, katniss, hunger gamesWe’ve officially reached the end of the road for the “Hunger Games” series, with the franchise’s final installment, “Mockingjay – Part 2,” due in theaters next month. With that in mind, Lionsgate has delivered an epic, chill-inducing final trailer for the flick that will leave fans wanting more — and make it difficult to come to grips with the series’s end.

The clip is soundtracked by Katniss’s (Jennifer Lawrence) desperate plea to the people of Panem to help her and the rest of the rebels from District 13 take down President Snow (Donald Sutherland), as she details all the abuses that they have suffered at his hands. Viewers are also given a glimpse at what awaits the fighters inside the Capitol, which has been booby-trapped with a host of horrors to beat back the rebels at any cost — and that includes the loss of many lives.

The burden of that loss is placed squarely on Katniss’s shoulders, as the trailer also makes it clear that though she wants to defeat Snow, she understands the price she is asking her fellow citizens to pay. Will everything she and others have sacrificed be worth it in the end?

Fans will find out on November 20, when “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 2” hits theaters.

  • Katniss Is Benched From Combat in First Clip From Final ‘Hunger Games’ Movie

“The Hunger Games” champ Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) may be the best warrior in Panem, but she’s too important to the cause to be put on the front line. That’s what she — and Finnick (Sam Claflin) and Gale (Liam Hemsworth) — are told in this first clip from “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2.”

In the nearly 2-minute scene, we see Finnick cut his honeymoon short to enter a tent where the rebels share the plans for their attack. Boggs (Mahershala Ali) and Cressida (Natalie Dormer) are in charge, and tell our heroes they’re the faces of the revolution and cannot be risked in combat. They’ll be following days behind the real fighters. “You’re to be the on-screen faces of the invasion,” Cressida explains. “The star squad. It’s been decided that you’re most effective when you’re seen by the masses.” That’s not to say they won’t face danger. They’re in a war zone. “You’re considered high value targets to the Capitol,” Boggs adds.

Finnick puts his own spin on it, whispering to the stoic Katniss, “Ladies and gentleman, welcome to the 76th Hunger Games.”

  • The ‘Hunger Games’ Will End in the Final ‘Mockingjay’ Poster

the hunger games, mockingjay, mockingjay part 2, katnissThe new tagline on the final poster for “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 2” sums up our feelings about the last installment of the series hitting theaters next month: “Nothing can prepare you for the end.” And we’re so not ready to say goodbye.

But while moviegoers mourn the franchise’s impending conclusion, Katniss and co. have a very real threat to deal with on the big screen, as the battle with and for the Capitol comes to a head. This new poster reflects the heady rush of simultaneous excitement and dread in store for both the characters in the film and the fans watching them, as readers of the “Hunger Games” books already know that things don’t exactly end as happily as they should.

The image features Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) herself almost aflame as she leaps across a burning background, which includes her signature Mockingjay symbol. It’s a clever progression of the imagery we saw on posters for “Mockingjay — Part 1,” in which she appeared all in black and somewhat withdrawn; here, there’s no mistaking that the Mockingjay herself has officially taken flight, and she’s not going down without a fight.
