    • ‘Lord of the Rings’ films writer Phillipa Boyens says they have ideas for more movies.
    • Anime effort ‘The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim’ debuts next week.
    • Andy Serkis is busy developing a Gollum-focused film.

It’s surely a good time to be a fan of ‘The Lord of the Rings’ –– at least, the on-screen adaptations of J.R.R. Tolkien’s work.

Prime Video continues to bring us seasons of ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power,’ which chronicles some of the Second Age in Tolkien terms –– many years before the events of ‘The Hobbit’ and the main ‘Lord of the Rings’ movies.

And talking of the movies, which were produced and directed by Peter Jackson, we can expect future films from him and his collaborators in the future (more on that below).

That’s not all. In a new interview, Phillipa Boyens, who is a writer and producer on not just the ‘Lord of the Rings’ and ‘The Hobbit’ movies, but also helped crafted the story for new animated spin-off film ‘The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim,’ talked up the possibility for other ideas coming to our screens.

What did Phillipa Boyens have to say about potentially more ‘LOTR’ movies?

'The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim' producer Philippa Boyens.

Boyens, who has been a key part of the ‘Rings’ movie team for years, sat down to discuss ‘War of the Rohirrim’ in particular and signaled that if the anime story is embraced by audiences, we could be seeing future stand-alone entries.

Here’s what she told The Playlist:

“There’s a lot of possibilities, when you look at it, there’s a lot of things in there, actually,” she said. “One of the things this ‘War of the Rohirrim’ story has shown us is that a stand-alone story works really successfully within the world of Middle-earth, and I would genuinely — because I’ve fallen in love with the form — love to see another anime. But that depends on the audiences out there, your audience, fans of not only the original trilogy, but that vast anime audience. I’m really interested to see what they think.”

Boyens also said that the ‘LOTR’ team has a wealth of ideas to work on, many stand-alone films, potential sequels to ‘War of the Rohirrim,’ and another, larger, more epic trilogy in the vein of the original ‘LOTR’ films.

    Here’s her comment on that:

“So we’re in the audiences hands. If there’s an appetite for it, we’ve got more stories. There’s a ton of stories left to be told there and some really, really interesting ones. But my preference would be, after ‘The Hunt For Gollum,’ would be to look at those stand-alone stories. And then if we got really ambitious — there are some epic, particular stories that could translate into that more traditional epic trilogy format that was the original ‘Lord Of The Rings,’ the war of the rings story.”

Who is making the new ‘Lord of the Rings’ movies?

Did you catch that mention of ‘The Hunt for Gollum’ in Boyens’ last statement? Yes, they are making more movies! Here’s what we know about that…

Chief among the new team is one Peter Jackson –– you know, the man who brought J.R.R. Tolkien’s stories of Hobbits, Elves and other creatures to pop cultural behemoth status with his original trilogy of movies and then the ‘Hobbit’ adaptations.

While it appears that Jackson is not currently planning to direct either of the new planned live-action films, he will be deeply involved in the movies’ development.

Working alongside him, as they have since the beginning, are collaborators Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, who will write the scripts for the films.

And another key player in the ‘LOTR’ franchise, Andy Serkis –– who regularly squeezed into performance capture suits to play slinky Ring-coveter Gollum, is also back, and he’s aboard to direct the first confirmed movie, which is perhaps fittingly (working) titled ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum’.

Serkis will also be getting back into his performance capture rig to star as the titular creature.

Warner Bros. wouldn’t be drawn on specifics just yet, but let’s be honest… It kind of speaks for itself. And there is at least one section of Tolkien’s work that focuses on just such a search (Aragorn is the unlucky person tasked with tracking down the riddle-spinner).

What form exactly the new story takes remains to be seen, but it has already been adapted into a fan film and a card game.

As for the other movie? That’s even more of a mystery for now, but the studio has said it’ll dig into unexplored stories.

Here’s Jackson, Walsh and Boyes’ statement on their return:

“It is an honor and a privilege to travel back to Middle-earth with our good friend and collaborator, Andy Serkis, who has unfinished business with that stinker — Gollum. As life-long fans of Professor Tolkien’s vast mythology, we are proud to be working with Mike De Luca, Pam Abdy and the entire team at Warner Bros. on another epic adventure!”

    And here’s Serkis:

“Yesssss, Precious. The time has come once more to venture into the unknown with my dear friends, the extraordinary and incomparable guardians of Middle-earth Peter, Fran and Philippa. With Mike and Pam, and the Warner Bros team on the quest as well, alongside WETA and our film making family in New Zealand, it’s just all too delicious… .”

When will ‘The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim’ be in theaters?

‘The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim,’ which tells how the legendary fortress of Helm’s Deep (seen in ‘The Two Towers’) got its name during a clash between tribes, will be in cinemas from December 13th.

Even as Prime Video’s Tolkien-derived ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’ launches its second season, the true big-hitter in the ‘Rings’ world continues to drive forward as plans for more movies were recently revealed.

With ‘LOTR’ and ‘The Hobbit’ movie trilogy filmmaker Peter Jackson producing the new output (more on that below), things are clearly in the works.

And now Sir Ian McKellen, the venerable British actor who so memorably played wizard Gandalf the Grey (and Gandalf the White) in Jackson’s movies, has spoken to magazine The Big Issue about his potential return to the franchise.

Here’s what McKellen had to say:

“I’ve just been told there are going to be more films and Gandalf will be involved and they hope that I’ll be playing him. When? I don’t know. What the script is? It’s not written yet. So they better be quick!”

And he’s only partly joking, since the 82-year-old is recuperating from a nasty fall while performing on stage in England, and the injuries he sustained have him in a reflective mood.

This was what he said about his status:

“I’m left feeling weak physically, which I’m doing exercises for. And, of course, it’s emotional. We all trip all our lives, it’s just when you get to my age you can’t always get up again. I’m just trying to convince myself it was an accident. I’m usually working or preparing to work, I’ve been doing a little bit of that, wondering what might be the best plan. I’m going to take the rest of the year off. Not because I need to, just because I want to.”

Just when you thought the already sprawling ensemble of ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’ couldn’t get any bigger, Prime Video goes and surprises us all by adding three new cast members in recurring roles for Season 2.

Ciaran Hinds, Rory Kinnear and Tanya Moodie are all joining the cast for the show, which has been in production on its second season for a while now in the UK.

What’s the story so far of ‘Rings of Power’?

Set thousands of years before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien’s ‘The Hobbit’ and ‘The Lord of the Rings’ books, the series takes viewers back to The Second Age, an era in which great powers were forged, kingdoms rose to glory and fell to ruin, unlikely heroes were tested, hope hung by the finest of threads, and a powerful villain threatened to cover all the world in darkness.

Beginning in a time of relative peace, the show follows an ensemble cast of characters, both familiar and new, as they confront the long-feared reemergence of evil to Middle-earth. From the darkest depths of the Misty Mountains to the majestic forests of the elf capital of Lindon, to the breathtaking island kingdom of Númenor, to the farthest reaches of the map, these kingdoms and characters will carve out legacies that live on long after they are gone.

What can we expect from Season 2?

We’ll leave a Spoiler Warning here for anyone who has yet to check out the show… But given that the climactic end of Season 1 saw Charlie Vickers human warrior Halbrand unmasked as cunning, charismatic evil wizard Sauron and the effective birth of the lava-scarred land of Mordor from under a human village, expect both of those to be followed. We’ll also be going on more adventures with the Harfoots and can expect Morfydd Clark’s Elf warrior Galadriel to keep on fighting, especially since she’s now been proved right about the Sauron situation.

As for the new cast, Prime Video isn’t saying who they’ll play yet.

    Rory Kinnear in 'Southcliffe,'
    Rory Kinnear in ‘Southcliffe,’

Where do I know Ciaran Hinds, Rory Kinnear and Tanya Moodie from?

Hinds is probably the best known of the three, an actor with a long legacy of impressive work on stage and on screens big and small. He was Oscar nominated for playing Pop in Kenneth Branagh’s ‘Belfast’ and has been seen in movies such as ‘Munich’, ‘In Bruges’, ‘Road to Perdition’, ‘Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy’ and the ‘Harry Potter’ franchise. Perhaps most relevant to both TV audiences and this new fantasy job is his run as Mance Rayder in ‘Game of Thrones’.

Kinnear is most recognizable from his performances as Bill Tanner in the Daniel Craig Bond movies starting with ‘Quantum of Solace’. Last year, he played various creepy roles in Alex Garland’s horror movie ‘Men’. On TV, he’s currently part of the cast of pirate comedy ‘Our Flag Means Death’.

Moodie has been seen in ‘Motherland’, ‘Neil Gaiman’s Neverwhere’, and ‘Sherlock’ on TV. Movie-wise, she’s appeared in ‘Star Wars: Episode IX ––The Rise of Skywalker’ as a General and in Sam Mendes’ ‘Empire of Light.’

All eight episodes of ‘The Rings of Power’ are available now on Prime Video, with the second season to follow at an unspecified date.

  • ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’ New Title and Teaser Trailer

Amazon Prime Video's ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’ premieres September 2nd.
Amazon Prime Video’s ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’ premieres September 2nd.

Amazon has revealed the official title of its upcoming, multi-season series based on the beloved books of J.R.R. Tolkien and it will be called ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.’

The series, in a sense, will act as a prequel to director Peter Jackson’s Oscar winning ‘Lord of the Rings’ and ‘The Hobbit‘ trilogies, as the story will focus on the forging of the original rings of power, which allowed Sauron to spread evil throughout Middle Earth.

In a statement released by Amazon, showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay discussed the new title and upcoming series. “This is a title that we imagine could live on the spine of a book next to J.R.R. Tolkien’s other classics. ‘The Rings of Power’ unites all the major stories of Middle-earth’s Second Age: the forging of the rings, the rise of the Dark Lord Sauron, the epic tale of Númenor, and the Last Alliance of Elves and Men. Until now, audiences have only seen on-screen the story of the One Ring, but before there was one, there were many… and we’re excited to share the epic story of them all.”

The studio also released a teaser trailer for the series that explains the origins of the rings. While the teaser does not utilize any actual footage from the series, it features the title being “physically forge in a blacksmith foundry, pouring fiery molten metal into hand-carved wooden ravines shaped to the letterforms,” with lines from Tolkien’s “Ring Verse” being spoken in voice over.

“Three Rings for the Elven-kings under the sky, Seven for the Dwarf-lords in their halls of stone, Nine for Mortal Men doomed to die, One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne, In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.”

You can watch the full teaser below:

Here is the full synopsis for the series:

Prime Video’s ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’ brings to screens for the very first time the heroic legends of the fabled Second Age of Middle-earth’s history. This epic drama is set thousands of years before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien’s ‘The Hobbit‘ and ‘The Lord of the Rings,’ and will take viewers back to an era in which great powers were forged, kingdoms rose to glory and fell to ruin, unlikely heroes were tested, hope hung by the finest of threads, and one of the greatest villains that ever flowed from Tolkien’s pen threatened to cover all the world in darkness.

Beginning in a time of relative peace, the series follows an ensemble cast of characters, both familiar and new, as they confront the long-feared reemergence of evil to Middle-earth. From the darkest depths of the Misty Mountains, to the majestic forests of the elf-capital of Lindon, to the breathtaking island kingdom of Númenor, to the farthest reaches of the map, these kingdoms and characters will carve out legacies that live on long after they are gone.

Joining showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay as executive producers on the series are Lindsey Weber, Callum Greene, J.A. Bayona, Belén Atienza, Justin Doble, Jason Cahill, Gennifer Hutchison, Bruce Richmond, and Sharon Tal Yguado, as well as producers Ron Ames and Christopher Newman. J.A. Bayona, Charlotte Brandstrom, and Wayne Che Yip are all scheduled to direct episodes of the series.

‘The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’ is set to premiere exclusively on Amazon Prime Video beginning Friday, September 2nd, with new episodes dropping each week.

  • Orlando Bloom Thinks He’s Too Old to Be in Amazon’s ‘Lord of the Rings’ Series

Orlando Bloom Thinks He’s Too Old to Be in Amazon’s ‘Lord of the Rings’ Series

    New Line

Don’t expect to see Orlando Bloom notching arrows as Legolas in Amazon’s upcoming “Lord of the Rings” series.

While speaking to reporters about his new Amazon series “Carnival Row,” Bloom hinted that he’s too old to reprise his elegant elf character from the original trilogy and “The Hobbit” films.

“I remember being on set with Peter [Jackson] … 20 years ago now? And he was saying, ‘Wouldn’t it be funny to think about when they’ll want to do a remake of Lord of the Rings?’” the actor recalled.

“We were in the midst of this remarkable shoot and I said, ‘No! That’s never going to happen.’ And here I am, working for Amazon and they’re redoing it. It’s great.”

However, if fans are hoping Bloom will be back as Legolas — well, it’s unlikely due to the series’ time period. It takes place during the Second Age and while J.R.R. Tolkien never gave an age for the character, the prevailing theory is that he was born in the latter part of that era.

“I mean look, I don’t know how they’re going to approach it. I haven’t had any conversations about this. I fell that I have done everything…Coming back to be on ‘The Hobbit’ was a really wonderful little tip from Peter that he wanted me to come into that and it made a lot of sense,” Bloom noted.

“I like to think of myself as ageless but I don’t know where I would fit into that world. If you’re saying as Legolas, they’ve probably got some 19-year-old kid who is ready to go.”

  • First ‘Tolkien’ Movie Teaser Trailer Explores Author’s Inspiration for ‘Lord of the Rings’

First ‘Tolkien’ Movie Teaser Trailer Explores Author’s Inspiration for ‘Lord of the Rings’

    Fox Searchlight

This is a story of adventure, magic, love, courage, and fellowship — the story of J.R.R. Tolkien’s life.

The iconic author of “The Hobbit” and “Lord of the Rings” is the subject of a new biopic, “Tolkien,” which has released its first teaser trailer. Nicholas Hoult stars as the young writer in his formative years who finds friendship and artistic inspiration in a close-knit group of friends at college. But their “fellowship” is torn apart when they’re all sent to fight in World War I.

The movie interweaves the real people in Tolkien’s life with his rich imagination, and shows how the author’s fantasy world of Middle-earth was shaped by these friendships, by the hellish horrors of war, and by love, in the form of his eventual wife Edith Bratt (Lily Collins).

“Tolkien” opens in theaters May 10.

  • Will Peter Jackson Join Amazon’s ‘LOTR’ Series or Enter DC Universe?

Rumor has it, Peter Jackson is deciding between Amazon’s new “Lord of the Rings” prequel series and the DC Universe.

Which would you prefer? Maybe he can do both? Or neither?

Peter Jackson directed “The Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit” movies, and Amazon’s new LOTR series reportedly has the option to use material from those films. Jackson has been invited to participate as an executive producer. Last we heard, that was up to him.

But now Comicbook is sharing the rumor from TheOneRing.net that Jackson and his New Zealand-based team are debating between returning to Middle Earth for Amazon’s $1 billion series or joining the DC Universe in some fashion:

Let’s assume for a moment this is legit. DC’s new SVOD service is specifically called DC Universe, so is that what Jackson would be joining, or do they mean the DC Extended Universe with Superman/Wonder Woman/Batman, etc., or just the DC Comics/Warner Bros. film world at large?

DC has a ton of projects coming up beyond “Aquaman” and “Wonder Woman 2,” including Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn spinoff, whatever is happening with Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker movie, “Swamp Thing” for the SVOD service, and more projects in and out of the DCEU.

This poll suggests fans would prefer Jackson return to the LOTR prequel series:

Then again, that’s a poll from an account run by Tolkien fans. Of course they’d pick Middle Earth.

The LOTR/DC debate is unconfirmed, but it’s believable enough to think Jackson and company are weighing options before possibly jumping in with Amazon. Apparently that series needs to be in production within two years or the deal with the Tolkien estate falls apart.

So should he join DC? Return to LOTR? Skip both and focus on that “Tintin” sequel for Steven Spielberg?

  • Peter Jackson Teases ‘Doctor Who’ and ‘LOTR’ Fans in One Brilliant Video

While you were busy stuffing your face this Thanksgiving weekend, Peter Jackson was in New Zealand whipping multiple fandoms into frenzies.

On his Facebook page, the “Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit” director posted a very cheeky video, with his daughter reading off his work e-mails while he polished his Oscars. (You know every winner does this every weekend. They must.) She said he got an e-mail from Steven Moffat, asking if he’ll direct an episode of “Doctor Who”‘; and while PJ was busy insulting Moffat’s scripts, in walked another Peter, Peter Capaldi:

    “I’m the Doctor.”
    “Who?”
    “Correct.”

    Home Invasion

    This was an interesting weekend…

Posted by Peter Jackson on Sunday, November 29, 2015

Nice. The whole video is pretty clever, and includes a nod to “The Walking Dead” in the end, but what was the objective? Not only does it renew hopes that Peter Jackson, a “Doctor Who” fan, will direct an episode, no one missed that bookmarked copy of “The Silmarillion” on the director’s desk:

What does THAT mean?! Most likely … not much. As The Verge noted, that collection of stories was edited and published by J.R.R. Tolkien’s son, Christopher, who is not a fan of the movies, and the rights are still held by the Tolkien family. So, as Peter has noted himself, it’s unlikely that a movie will be made from “The Silmarillion” anytime soon.

What do you think this video means — other than Peter maybe directing a “Doctor Who” episode — and can you believe his daughter is all grown up now? Where did the time go?
