Moviefone recently had the pleasure of speaking with actress Heather Graham about her work on ‘Place of Bones’, her first reaction to the screenplay, her strong character, working with Tom Hopper, collaborating with director Audrey Cummings, making a Western and more.

Moviefone: To begin with, what was your first reaction to the screenplay and why did you personally wanted to be a part of this project?

Heather Graham: Well, when I read the script, I thought it was surprising. I didn’t know where it was going. We had a screening last night, and actually, a few of my friends said, “I really had no idea where this movie was going. I had no idea what was going to happen”. I just think it was a great character. As an actress, you want to find a juicy role, and it was fun to play this tough badass woman who’s super smart and gets to shoot bad guys with a gun. I think that you feel drawn into the story. You care about the characters. As an actress, you want an interesting role. For me, it’s doing something different where I feel like I get to play this tough badass character who can outsmart these bad guys. That was very fun.

MF: Without giving anything away, were you surprised by the direction that the script goes in?

HG: Yes, the ending is a super surprising ending that I was totally shocked by, but I like that, when I feel like I’ve never seen this before. It’s a different way of telling this kind of story.

MF: Pandora is a strong, independent, and resilient character. Can you talk about your approach to playing her?

HG: I think my character’s had a hard life, so I basically have decided I’m going to keep my daughter safe. I’m going to keep her away from the rest of society because I don’t want anything to happen to her that happened to me. This fierce independence, I love that about my character. I’m flawed but I’m also a good mom in some ways. I think I have a lot of anger and bitterness and maybe I’m protecting her too much, but at the same time, I can understand why she would do that.

MF: Pandora has spent a long-time away from civilization, can you talk about how she feels when these strange men approach her home?

HG: I think a lot of bad things have happened to my character and my husband died, and I think I’m just incredibly resourceful. I think I read a lot of books. I think I know how to do a lot of things, so I know how to survive in the most difficult circumstances.

MF: Can you talk about the unlikely alliance that Pandora makes with Calhoun?

HG: I think it’s an interesting relationship that we have. It’s not your typical movie relationship, but he’s likable and unlikable. He’s a good guy and a bad guy, and I think that I see who he is, and I don’t let him fool me, like he probably is a smooth talker. Even though he’s kind of a bad guy, he’s complicated and he shows up at the end being more of a good guy. I like that I don’t ever really trust him. Everybody’s really complicated in this movie, and nobody’s perfectly good except for maybe the daughter, but she’s pretty screwed up, too.

MF: Brielle Robillard plays your daughter, can you talk about working with her?

HG: Yeah, she’s awesome. She’s new, she’s young. She is so good. I just watched the movie on the big screen last night for the first time, and she did such a great job and she’s so real. The whole story for me is about how much I love my daughter and want to protect her and help her to have a better life than I had.

MF: Can you talk about preparing for the action sequences?

HG: The gun shooting is fun. I had to do a stunt where I’m shooting at this guy and then I fall over, and they had a stunt woman there for me, but I ended up doing it myself. Then everybody clapped, and the stunt people were like, “Great.” So, I felt like I got cred with the stunt department. That was cool.

MF: I know you only have a few scenes with him but what was it like working with Tom Hopper?

HG: We have a big scene at the end where he’s so scary. He’s so cool. He’s so nice. He’s super cute. Him and his wife, they eat healthy. He was showing me this food that he cooks that looks amazing. He’s kind of the opposite of this character, but in the movie, he’s terrifying and horrible. The thing is, you take this guy whose so movie star handsome, and you want to like him because he’s just so handsome, but then his character is so horrible.

MF: What’s Audrey Cummings like to work with as a director on set?

HG: It’s awesome. I love working with a female director, and she’s cool. She loves genre movies, and it’s just fun. I think we both related to the Pandora character, so we had a great time together.

MF: In general, what are you looking for from a director when you’re working on set?

HG: I think you want to work with someone who’s supportive, who believes in you, but also helps you bring out your best work. I think Audrey really helped ground me and make me more natural and real in the movie, which I really appreciated.

MF: What’s it like making a western and are you a fan of the genre?

HG: It’s a mixture of being very beautiful, and it was freezing. It was so cold, I was dying. It was very uncomfortable. I like Westerns, but I sometimes feel like there’s not enough female energy or female characters in them, so I felt like this was exciting because it told a little bit more of a female story.

MF: Finally, and again, without giving anything away, the film mixes the Western genre with other genres, can you talk about that?

HG: Yeah, it’s got aspects of being a thriller, it’s got aspects of being horror, and then I feel like there’s a lot of humor in it, which I was surprised last night at the screening. A lot of people were laughing in a lot of places, so it’s kind of disturbing, but also it makes you laugh. It’s not so much horror that you can’t sleep at night because of your nightmares.

  • 11 Things You Never Knew About ‘The Hangover’ on its 10th Anniversary

11 Things You Never Knew About ‘The Hangover’ on its 10th Anniversary

    Warner Bros.

Ten years ago, “The Hangover” landed in theaters and proved that R-rated comedies can also be huge summer blockbusters. It spawned a franchise and made huge names out of stars like Ed Helms and Zach Galifianakis. To celebrate this big milestone, here are 11 fun facts about the making of “The Hangover.”

    1. The plot of “The Hangover” is inspired by a similar ordeal suffered by a Hollywood producer named Tripp Vinson. Vinson once went MIA from his own Las Vegas bachelor party and awoke in an unfamiliar strip club with a hefty bill.

    2. The screenplay was included on the 2007 Blacklist, a roundup of the most acclaimed scripts not yet made into films.

    Warner Bros.

    3. Ed Helms didn’t need any special makeup work done to create his missing tooth. Helms never developed an adult incisor tooth in that spot, so he simply had his dental implant removed during filming.

    4. Lindsay Lohan was originally offered the part of Jade. Lohan has since admitted she regrets turning down the role.

    Warner Bros.

    5. Jack Black, Jake Gyllenhaal and Jonah Hill were all considered for the role of Alan Garner, though Alan’s portrayal in the script was significantly altered before Zach Galifianakis was eventually chosen.

    6. Galifianakis improvised one of Alan’s most memorable lines, “I didn’t know they gave out rings at the Holocaust.” Galifianakis changed the original joke because he wanted to convey Alan’s utter ignorance about the wider world.

    Warner Bros.

    7. Ken Jeong has said that he had to get permission from his wife before appearing nude in “The Hangover.” Jeong had underwear digitally added to his body for the trailer.

    8. Mike Tyson initially turned down an offer to appear in the film, but he changed his mind after learning that Todd Phillips previously directed 2003’s “Old School.”

    Warner Bros.

    9. Phillips waived his salary in favor of partial ownership of the movie, a decision which paid off handsomely after its release. Phillips compares it to George Lucas‘ handling of the original “Star Wars.”

    10. “The Hangover” became the highest-grossing R-rated comedy ever released, beating a record long held by “Beverly Hills Cop.”

    Hasbro

    11. In 2018, Hasbro released a “The Hangover”-inspired variant of Clue called “Clue: Lost in Las Vegas.” which tasks players with finding a missing friend rather than uncovering a murderer.

13 Great Movies About Getting Absolutely Sloshed

    Netflix

With the Amy Poehler-directed comedy “Wine Country” hitting Netflix Friday, we thought it would be an excellent time to toast some of our favorite movies about people who like to indulge just a little too much.

    Marvel

    Iron Man 2” (2010)
Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) isn’t usually known for his moderation in anything, so when he throws an epic bash at his Malibu pad, we learn a few things. 1) He can pee in the suit. (Yay?) 2) The best food to combat hangovers if you’re a superhero is clearly donuts.

    Marvel

    Thor” (2011)
Is there a movie where Thor (Chris Hemsworth) isn’t pounding beers? He can usually handle his own, but, alas, mere mortal Erik Selvig (Stellan Skarsgård) doesn’t have quite the same heroic metabolism. Of course, Thor really (ahem) ups his drinking game in “Avenger: Endgame.”

    Orion

    Arthur” (1981)
Speaking of millionaires who like to bend the elbow, Tony Stark has nothing on Arthur Bach (Dudley Moore). Perpetually drunk, he’s got to rely on his long-suffering butler (John Gielgud) for everything. Including not drowning in the tub.

    Fox Searchlight

Can You Ever Forgive Me?” (2018)
A struggling, misanthropic writer (Melissa McCarthy) and her down-on-his-luck friend (Richard E. Grant) become drinking buddies and partners in crime in this based-on-a-true-story drama. They both (deservedly) scored Oscar nominations.

    Handmade Films

    Withnail and I” (1987)
In this brilliantly funny British cult film, Withnail (Richard E. Grant) and “I” (Paul McGann) are out-of-work actors in ’60s London. When they go on holiday in the country “by mistake,” the local tearoom will never be the same. They barge in, already drunk, and demand “the finest wines known to humanity.” Grant’s Can You Ever Forgive Me?” character was  a joyous update on the gloriously shameless Withnail, who’s such a lush he’ll drink anything — even lighter fluid!

    My Favorite Year” (1982)
Who else but legendary real-life drinker Peter O’Toole could play swashbuckling matinee idol Alan Swann, whose career (and liver) have seen better days? A comedian (Mark Linn-Baker) has got to keep him somewhat sober to appear on his show. Shenanigans naturally ensue, including horse-napping, chandelier swinging, and the crowd going wild.

Get Him to the Greek” (2010)
Essentially the same premise as “My Favorite Year,” but with an out-of-control rock star, a big concert, and a variety of illegal drugs. In one of the funniest scenes, record label talent scout Aaron (Jonah Hill) makes sure Aldous Snow (Russell Brand) isn’t smashed during a live “Today” interview by chugging all his whiskey and bogarting his blunt. Aldous is fine, but a seeing-double Aaron doesn’t make the best impression on Meredith Vieira.

    Sideways” (2004)
The best Oscar-nominated comedy/drama about an author (Paul Giamatti) and an actor (Thomas Haden Church) whose wild weekend in Napa includes fleeing from ostriches and Giamatti chugging the entire slush bucket at a winery. But, thankfully, absolutely no Merlot.

    Warner Bros.

    The Hangover” (2009)
When you wake up to a chicken, a tiger and a baby in your hotel room, you know you’ve really painted the town. In this comedy that launched two sequels, four friends’ Vegas bachelor party is all kinds of out of control. To be fair, it wasn’t just the booze. Thanks, Alan (Zach Galifianakis) for slipping roofies in everyone’s drink, thus ensuring no one remembers what the hell happened the night before.

    American Zoetrope

    Barfly” (1987)
Mickey Rourke stars as Henry Chinaski, a character who closely resembles noted writer (and drinker) Charles Bukowski, who created him. Henry and fellow alcoholic Wanda (Faye Dunaway) start a tortured romance, which is as comic as it is doomed. Rourke’s “My friennnnnzz” toast scene is legendary.

    Sony Pictures

    Grabbers” (2012)
The only way to avoid getting eaten by voracious sea creatures (whose tentacles can reach you even on land)? Staying perpetually drunk! This “Tremors“-esque Irish horror comedy is a hoot.

    Neon

    Colossal” (2017)
After a bad breakup, unemployed party girl Gloria (Anne Hathaway) leaves New York City to return to the town where she grew up. And promptly gets a job at an old friend’s bar (unwise) and continues drinking until she blacks out. When she’s out cold, a Godzilla-esque monster terrorizes the city of Seoul. It couldn’t be related… could it? And certainly wouldn’t be a metaphor for the beast inside of us when we drink.

    Universal Pictures

    Animal House” (1978)
We don’t advise chugging an entire bottle of Jack Daniels in one go, but where would this — and all college comedies from “Old School” to “Neighbors” — be if Bluto (John Belushi) and his beer-loving buddies hadn’t pounded the booze quite so hard?
