‘The Electric State’ receives 6.5 out of 10 stars.

Premiering on Netflix on March 14th, ‘The Electric State’ is the latest big movie from ‘Avengers: Infinity War’/‘Avengers: Endgame’ directors Joe and Anthony Russo and is set in a dystopian past where robots and mankind have been locked in conflict.

It’s just the latest effort from the filmmakers, who haven’t exactly had a warm critical reception for the work they’ve put out since ending their ‘Avengers’ run (they’re back on that particular duty with the next two movies), and unfortunately won’t do all that much to change the perception of them.

‘The Electric State’ is reaching for Spielbergian levels of exploring heart within technological tales, but it never quite makes it there.

A lot of what is entertaining about this new movie feels like it was borrowed from other, better movies, some of them Spielberg’s own –– there is definitely some DNA from ‘A.I.: Artificial Intelligence’ and ‘Ready Player One‘ here in the story (adapted by the directors’ regular collaborators, Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely from Simon Stålenhag’s graphic novel.

While the source material offers a basic spine for the plot –– an alternate 1990s where humanity and robots have been locked in a conflict after the latter revolted against being employed to do all the grunt work people don’t want to –– and some of the visual inspiration, the movie takes those ideas and runs with them.

Yet what the team chooses to make its focus doesn’t always work that well. And to add to the feel of borrowed acclaim, chunks of the score sound like composer Alan Silvestri using discarded cuts from his ‘Avengers’ music.

    Script and Direction

Markus and McFeely have brought us well-thought-out stories before, even ones that must juggle multiple characters.

But in ‘The Electric State,’ the central character is Millie Bobby Brown’s Michelle, whose life is shattered when her parents and genius younger brother are killed in a car crash. At least, she thinks her brother is dead –– but when she’s visited unexpectedly by a robot based on his favourite childhood cartoon, she comes to believe he might actually be alive.

So begins a quest to find him, one that will take Michelle, smuggler Keats (Chris Pratt) and his robot sidekick Herm (voiced by Anthony Mackie) into what is known as the Exclusion Zone, a walled-off corner in the desert where robots were banished following the war.

The plot offers the opportunity for plenty of amusing robo-characters, but the sheer number just makes the film feel busy and underfocused, while the endless quips from the various robots don’t always land. The narrative is also locked into a fairly predictable progression –– you’ll likely guess where it’s all headed before too long.

    'The Electric State'. Photo: Netflix.
    ‘The Electric State’. Photo: Netflix.

Still, there is some genuine emotion infused towards the end of the story.

As directors, the Russos have proved they can handle these big movies, but their more recent efforts on that front, including ‘The Gray Man’ have been blandly reductive releases despite the talent involved both on screen and behind the camera.

For ‘The Electric State’ that means a starry cast (most of them are on voice duty) and some very impressive visual effects, but with a $320 million budget, you’d expect that.

    Cast and Performances

Millie Bobby Brown continues to prove she can anchor genre work, but the role of Michelle, the young woman at the center of the movie, doesn’t always offer her too many chances to prove it. She’s perfectly fine in the role, but little more than that.

Chris Pratt, meanwhile, is largely doing a riff on characters of this type he’s played before –– the lovable rogue we’ve met in the likes of ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ and ‘Jurassic World,’ and Keats is very much a watered-down version of those.

Stanley Tucci is somewhat lumbered with a basic villain role, a tech mogul with shades of Elon Musk who claims to want to help humanity but is only too happy if there’s collateral damage.

(L to R) Giancarlo Esposito and Stanley Tucci in 'The Electric State'. Photo: Netflix.

Giancarlo Esposito is also an antagonist, the hard-nosed drone pilot and robot deactivation specialist Colonel Bradbury, but the part is very much another scowling villain role for the actor, who might want to look into some different parts.

Woody Norman as Michelle’s super-smart brother Chris has some nice notes to play, though he is naturally off screen for much of the running time. Still, if there is genuine emotion to be found at all, it’s in the human connection between Chris and Michelle.

Another Woody, this time Harrelson, plays Mr. Peanut, the southern-fried promotional robot of the snack treat. He’s decent, but mostly speaks in platitudes.

Elsewhere, the voice cast is a mixed bag –– Jenny Slate and Mackie are among the highlights, while Brian Cox is saddled with a one-joke character in Pop Fly, a baseball bot.

    Final Thoughts

‘The Electric State’ seems unlikely to change many peoples’ opinion about the Russo’s non-MCU work. It’s certainly a sweeping story with some fun to be found, but it rarely leaves a mark on the level of movies it has been inspired by.

It’s a shame, as the creative team have clearly poured their hearts into it –– if only the results were better.

What’s the plot of ‘The Electric State’?

‘The Electric State’ is set in an alternate, retro-futuristic version of the 1990s. Millie Bobby Brown stars as Michelle, an orphaned teenager navigating life in a society where sentient robots resembling cartoons and mascots, who once served peacefully among humans, now live in exile following a failed uprising.

Everything Michelle thinks she knows about the world is upended one night when she’s visited by Cosmo, a sweet, mysterious robot who appears to be controlled by Christopher — Michelle’s genius younger brother whom she thought was dead. Determined to find the beloved sibling she thought she had lost, Michelle sets out across the American southwest with Cosmo, and soon finds herself reluctantly joining forces with Keats (Chris Pratt), a low-rent smuggler, and his wisecracking robot sidekick, Herman (voiced by Anthony Mackie).

As they venture into the Exclusion Zone, a walled-off corner in the desert where robots now exist on their own, Keats and Michelle find a strange, colorful group of new animatronic allies — and begin to learn that the forces behind Christopher’s disappearance are more sinister than they ever expected.

    • The first pictures from new sci-fi movie ‘The Electric State’ have landed.
    • Millie Bobby Brown and Chris Pratt star.
    • Joe and Anthony Russo are the directors.

Since wrapping up their successful run of movies at Marvel, capped with the huge blockbuster ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ directing/sibling duo Joe and Anthony Russo have seen more mixed fortunes in terms of their filmmaking.

While they set up their own production company, their actual movies have been hit and miss –– the likes of ‘Cherry’ and ‘The Gray Man’ haven’t seen the same pop cultural impact as their time with Iron Man and the rest of the Marvel gang.

Now, before they prepare to head back to the MCU for more ‘Avengers’ action, the pair have an ambitious new science fiction film on the way.

Adapted from Simon Stålenhag’s book by their regular collaborators Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely (who found the source material and wrote a spec script), ‘The Electric State’ finds man and machine typically having trouble co-existing, with Millie Bobby Brown and Chris Pratt starring in the story of a young woman looking for her missing brother.

The first pictures from the new movie are now online.

Brown discussed her character with Vanity Fair in a recent article:

“The note that I would always get is, she’s still human. She’s rebellious and yes, she doesn’t want to follow the rules and she’s incredibly hurt because she’s dealing with a lot of grief. But she’s not invincible. We’re technically both the same age, so I feel like it was just: What are moments that I wouldn’t show my weakness? What are moments that I would? And I just played with that. I really want her to show that she’s made of stone because I want that to be the perception of who she is. But actually, as you get to know her, she softens and she warms up. And I tried to implement as much of my own experiences into her as possible.”

Netflix has yet to confirm when the movie will be arriving, beyond setting it for a 2025 release. Given the scale of this thing, we’d imagine the company will at least grant it a limited theatrical run ahead of it arriving on users’ accounts.

  • Ryan Gosling Reportedly Boards New ‘Ocean’s Eleven’ Movie

Ryan Gosling as Six in 'The Gray Man'.

You might recall that, back in May, reports emerged that Margot Robbie was attached to star in a new ‘Ocean’s’ movie for Warner Bros. Discovery, which ‘Austin Powers’ director Jay Roach would make.

According to subscription newsletter Puck, there has been some forward movement on this, as Ryan Gosling may now co-star with Margot Robbie. And, if their sources are to be believed, it’ll serve as a prequel to the previous movies that turns the clock back to a heist in Europe in the 1960s.

And that feels fitting, since the original ‘Ocean’s film was made in 1960, starring Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., and other members of the Rat Pack.

2001’s ‘Ocean’s Eleven’ saw director Steven Soderbergh remaking and updating the concept, bringing an ensemble anchored by George Clooney and Matt Damon to the screen, the characters looking to pull off a huge, tricky heist at a Las Vegas hotel.

That movie generated over $450 million worldwide in theatrical business alone, and Warners was quick to have Soderbergh reunite his cast (adding even more celebrity talent for good measure) for two follow-ups, ‘Ocean’s Twelve’ in 2004 and 2007’s ‘Ocean’s Thirteen’.

In 2018, Sandra Bullock and Cate Blanchett led a spin-off called ‘Ocean’s Eight,’ which saw a female crew pulling off a robbery at the glitzy Met Gala in New York. That movie was directed by Gary Ross.

Awkwafina, Helena Bonham Carter, Anne Hathaway, Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Rihanna, Mindy Kaling, and Sarah Paulson
(L to R) Awkwafina, Helena Bonham Carter, Anne Hathaway, Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Rihanna, Mindy Kaling, and Sarah Paulson in 2018’s ‘Ocean’s 8.’

Aside from the new movie’s potential prequel nature and previous reports pointing to a heist story set in Europe, all we really know at this one is that the screenplay comes from Carrie Solomon, a relative newcomer who has one script, ‘My Boyfriend’s Wedding’, in development.

This latest movie might also – in keeping with Warner Bros. Discovery’s drive to focus on big theatrical releases – boast a bigger budget than even Soderbergh’s films, to give it a true summer movie feel.

Of course, this isn’t official yet, and there has been no comment from the studio (not that we’d necessarily expect any news release while deals are still being hashed out). But assuming it truly goes into production with every involved, the new ‘Ocean’s’ movie would mark a reunion for Gosling and Robbie, who star together in next summer’s ‘Barbie.’

Gosling is coming off of Netflix’s giant action thriller ‘The Gray Man’ (which already has both a sequel and a spin-off commissioned by the streaming service). He’s preparing to shoot ‘The Fall Guy’, a movie version of the 1980s TV series, with ‘Bullet Train’s David Leitch directing.

Alongside ‘Barbie’, Robbie will be seen in ‘Amsterdam’ opposite Christian Bale and John David Washington for director David O. Russell, ‘Asteroid City’, the latest comedy from Wes Anderson, and old Hollywood story ‘Babylon’, playing Clara Bow for Damien Chazelle.

Roach, meanwhile, made his name with comedy movies such as the ‘Austin Powers’ and ‘Meet the Parents’ trilogies, but has branched out to comedy dramas with his TV work, which includes ‘Recount’ and ‘Game Change’ for HBO. His most recent job was directing and producing all the episodes of comedy ‘High Desert’ for Apple TV+, which stars Patricia Arquette and Matt Dillon.

Netflix is busy celebrating the success of ‘The Gray Man’, the Chris Evans/Ryan Gosling action thriller from directors Joe and Anthony Russo.

It’s no surprise, then, that the streaming service leapt at the chance to make the siblings’ next planned film, an adaptation of Simon Stålenhag’s illustrated novel ‘The Electric State’.

The pair has already cast Millie Bobbie Brown and Chris Pratt (because they seemingly refuse to make a film post-Avengers without one of the Marvel heroes in it) in the movie.

Now they’re adding an eclectic group of supporting roles, with Michelle Yeoh, Stanley Tucci, Brian Cox and Jenny Slate now aboard.

Stålenhag’s lushly illustrated novel is set in a post-apocalyptic 1997 and tells the story of a teenage girl (Brown) who realizes that a strange but sweet robot who comes to her has actually been sent by her missing brother. She and the robot set out to find the brother in an imaginative world of humans mixing with all manner of tech, uncovering a grand conspiracy in the process.

Yet it didn’t quite coalesce there, and, with the deal back up for grabs, Netflix locked it down. “This is a very human story about a teenage girl with all the powers of a teenage girl and nothing more,” Markus told Deadline around the time of the Universal deal. “Another thing we are really proud of when it comes to this story is all the major characters, barring one supporting character, are women which is super exciting to be involved in.”

There are no details of who the new arrivals might be playing, though Deadline’s report on the latest casting mentions that Cox and Slate will be lending their voices to CG characters.

And even though Netflix might love for the AGBO team to start work on the ‘Gray Man’ sequel and spin-off that was announced in the wake of its streaming success, this is certainly an intriguing prospect that is now crammed full of great actors.

Yeoh, of course, is a veteran enjoying current success with ‘Everything Everywhere All At Once’. Cox is the foul-mouthed patriarch at the heart of HBO hit ‘Succession’. Tucci needs little introduction but was most recently seen on the big screen in a small role for ‘The King’s Man’. Alexander, most famous for ‘Seinfeld’ on TV, worked on comedy pic ‘Faith Based’. And Slate can be heard in ‘Marcel the Shell with Shoes On’ (and has a quick role in ‘Everything Everywhere’, where she causes trouble for Yeoh’s Evelyn.

Set to kick off shooting this fall, there’s no word yet of a date for ‘The Electric State’.

  • Netflix Plans ‘The Gray Man’ Sequel and Spin-Off

A sequel to Netflix's 'The Gray Man,' is now in development with star Ryan Gosling and directors Joe and Anthony Russo set to return.
A sequel to Netflix’s ‘The Gray Man,’ is now in development with star Ryan Gosling and directors Joe and Anthony Russo set to return.

Even given its current subscriber and financial wobbles, Netflix is looking to splash the cash when it thinks it can spawn a franchise from a successful movie.

And having brought Joe and Anthony Russo’s spy thriller ‘The Gray Man’ to theaters and, this past weekend, its streaming service, the company is looking to keep backing their ambitious plans to build out the adaptations of Mark Greaney’s novel series.

Because we can’t just have a straight sequel, the world-building is going into high gear with both a direct follow-up and a spin-off.

‘The Gray Man’, which the Russos directed (and Joe Russo co-wrote with regular collaborators Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely), was the all-action story of Sierra Six (Ryan Gosling), a trained operative called Sierra Six, who works for a shadowy chunk of the CIA, dispatched to carry out seemingly impossible missions with plausible deniability on the agency’s part.

But when he discovers digital evidence of a conspiracy, his handlers will do anything to keep the information from getting out. They send the cruel, psychopathic Lloyd Hansen (Chris Evans in a dodgy mustache) and a wealth of baddies to hunt down our hero.

The sequel will pick up Six’s story (with Gosling attached to return) and follow another mission. The Russo brothers are once more planning to direct, and McFeely is at work on the script.

As for the spin-off, that’s even less clear right now. The first movie was chock full of characters that could be used in their own story – such as Dhanush’s Avik San (AKA Lone Wolf) or Wagner Moura’s fixer Laszlo Sosa – but the team is keeping that quiet too for now.

What we do know is that ‘Deadpool’ scripting duo Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick are busy writing that movie.

“The audience reaction to ‘The Gray Man’ has been nothing short of phenomenal. We are so appreciative of the enthusiasm that fans across the world have had for this film,” Joe and Anthony say in a statement. “With so many amazing characters in the movie, we had always intended for the ‘Gray Man’ to be part of an expanded universe, and we are thrilled that Netflix is announcing a sequel with Ryan, as well as a second script that we’re excited to talk about soon.”

“With ‘The Gray Man’, the Russos delivered an edge-of-your-seat spectacle that audiences around the world are loving,” says Netflix Head of Global Film Scott Stuber. “We’re excited to continue to partner with them and the team at AGBO as they build out ‘The Gray Man’ universe.”

It’s not the first franchise the Russos have been building for the company either – there’s also ‘Extraction’ starring another old ‘Avengers’ colleague, Chris Hemsworth. That movie has already spawned a sequel, which will arrive on the service next year.

Thus far, Netflix has not announced a date for either new ‘Gray Man’ movie, but it seems unlikely that either will be ready much before early 2024.

  • Movie Review: ‘The Gray Man’

Arriving on Netflix July 22nd, ‘The Gray Man’ represents the return of directors Joe and Anthony Russo’ to the sort of big-scale action entertainment they brought to screens with their Marvel movies, including ‘Avengers: Infinity War’rand ‘Avengers: Endgame’.

Following a detour into character drama with ‘Cherry’ (which wasn’t as well received as their giant MCU entries) and producing other action fare such as ‘Extraction’, they’re back behind the camera, roping in the former Captain America (Chris Evans) to star alongside Ryan Gosling.

Tearing a page from the likes of the ‘Bourne’ and ‘Bond’ stories, ‘The Gray Man’ adapts the novels by Mark Greaney. Here, the directors recruited their old ‘Captain America’ and ‘Avengers’ movie writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely to work on the script alongside Joe Russo himself.

‘The Gray Man’ introduces us to Sierra Six (Gosling), plucked from prison years ago by Billy Bob Thornton’s Fitzroy to become the titular “gray” operative, working for the CIA outside the boundaries of the law and using any means necessary. He’s a killer when needed, but while he’s supremely efficient at his job, he’s also conflicted as to the marks left on his soul.

On a mission to take out what his current handlers (including Regé-Jean Page’s Carmichael and Jessica Henwick’s Suzanne Brewer) assure him is a very bad guy, Six stumbles upon a drive holding information about a massive conspiracy.

Soon, he’s on the run for his life, as his bosses really don’t want that information to get out into the world. To stop Six, they hire Lloyd Hansen (Evans), an ethics-free CIA washout who has reinvented himself as a private contractor, willing to do anything for money.

He, in turn, looks to manipulate Six by leaning on (and torturing) Fitzroy and the older man’s niece, Claire (Julia Butters).

With a variety of dangerous thugs hunting him down, Six has his wits and the occasional support of fellow fighter Dani Miranda (Ana de Armas) to save his skin and reveal what he’s discovered.

The Russos bring all that they’ve learned working on giant Marvel movies to bear on this one, and it shows – the camera weaves and ducks (drone shots aplenty) into action scenes and the fights are carried off with aplomb and knowing humor. One moment finds de Armas’ Miranda grousing about Six tossing her an empty gun without letting her know, leading to a debate as to whether you should ever throw someone a loaded weapon.

What does feel lacking here are truly developed characters. While you don’t usually come to an action thriller for deep drama, most of the people on display here are ciphers rather than fully developed people (and yes, their MCU entries had several movies in which to flesh out their people, not to mention an extensive comic book background).

The dialogue, too, is also strictly thriller movie standard: characters growl hard-boiled lines about getting “bravo team in here” or lobbing put-downs at each other.

In its central pair, though, they do at least have a couple of powerhouse performers who are clearly having a blast (which also describes several of the set pieces). Gosling is a soulful, darkly charming lead who does at least have a little bit of a backstory with his prison past, though his daddy issue origin story is hardly the freshest idea in the world.

Chris Evans in 'The Gray Man.'
Chris Evans in ‘The Gray Man.’ Photo: Paul Abell/Netflix © 2022.

As for Evans, he’s shrugging off the stalwart Steve Rogers to play an even darker, smarmier character than his ‘Knives Out’ role. With a terrible mustache and a massive ego, Hansen is a worthy rival, one who has fun being awful to people. He’s also handed some of the better lines of the movie, including “if you want to make an omelet, you gotta kill some people.”

Everyone else is at least dependable – Butters brings some life to what is otherwise a thankless damsel in distress, while Thornton brings strong paternal figure energy crossed with no-nonsense attitude to Fitzroy.

Despite the flair and the passion on display, though, it all starts to feel a little generic at times, and early on the editing is distractingly swift, the footage sliced apart to such a degree as to give even the likes of Michael Bay nightmares.

Running on rails through its story from one action beat to the next with barely a pause, ‘The Gray Man’ can start to feel like a video game, Six battling against each threat, proving that he can get out of any situation, even when the odds are against him.

Ana de Armas as Dani Miranda, and Ryan Gosling as Six in 'The Gray Man.'
(L to R) Ana de Armas as Dani Miranda, and Ryan Gosling as Six in ‘The Gray Man.’ Photo: Paul Abell/Netflix © 2022.

There are action cliches aplenty and some sequences that feel like the filmmaking team just wanted to homage or top some of their favorite movies, resulting in a product that sometimes becomes less than the sum of its parts.

Yet there’s no denying the energy of the movie, nor the sheer appeal of two movie stars playing spies. And you’re in no doubt that a lot has been spent to make this one as big as possible – it hops around the globe and featuring the sort of massive set-pieces few other franchises (and make no mistake, this is an attempt to launch a new one) can pull off.

Though ‘The Gray Man’ can’t quite replicate the visceral thrills and emotional impact of, say, ‘Avengers: Endgame’, it certainly manages to deliver on the spectacle. It’s never going to probe the deeper levels of governmental responsibility in an increasingly dangerous world, but that’s not the point here – the movie wants to make you fear for Six and cheer when he survives, say, having to jump out of a plane without a parachute.

Zero wheels are re-invented here, yet the film offers sleek thrills, well-shot stunts and star charisma in abundance.

‘The Gray Man’ receives 4 out of 5 stars.

  • Netflix Announces Next TUDUM Event

Last September, Netflix offered fans some intriguing looks at upcoming shows and movies, and proved to be a major success, garnering over 25 million views, with the total number of views for the pre-shows, clips, trailers, and other content from the fan event totaling nearly 695 million views with over 3.3 billion impressions across 184 countries.

It’s perhaps not surprising, then, that the company would look to do it again, so mark September 24th on your calendar, as that’s when Netflix will launch the next TUDUM fan event via YouTube.

The schedule for 2022’s TUDUM: A Netflix Global Fan Event will kick off at 11:00 am KST (which is 7:00 pm PT on September 23rd). This first event will focus on the many exciting projects that are coming out of Korea for the streaming service – which means we could possibly get some news about the second season of ‘Squid Game’ and much more.

The next event will be held a few hours later at 11:00 am IST (or 10:30 pm PT on September 23rd). This event will focus on projects coming to Netflix from India.

US viewers get their official turn at 10:00 am PT on September 24th, where fans will get exclusive news from the shows and movies coming out of the United States and Europe, as well as an additional event that previews the projects that are coming from Latin America.

Tudum: A Netflix Global Fan Event Is Back September 24, 2022.

Finally, the last event will be held at 1:00 pm JST on September 25 (9:00 pm PT on September 24th), during which TUDUM will shine a light on shows and films from Japan.

“Tune in for an exciting day of exclusive news, never-before-seen footage, trailers, and first looks, as well as interviews with Netflix’s biggest stars and creators,” says the official announcement. “The free virtual event is a celebration of Netflix fandom and is dedicated to sharing the scoop on over 100 fan favorite shows, films and specials from across the globe.”

Netflix isn’t revealing exactly what will be featured during the new event – you’ll have to be patient – but we can surely expect updates on the likes of ‘Bridgerton’s third season, the next run of ‘The Crown’, and ‘Knives Out’ sequel ‘Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery’.

And even though the latest seasons of ‘Cobra Kai’ and ‘The Sandman’ will have already launched, we may still get interviews with the stars and creators, plus behind the scenes secrets.

The first TUDUM was a lot of fun, featuring Millie Bobby Brown, the ‘Bridgerton’ cast and more, and delivered plenty of updates. This next incarnation promises to be even bigger. Fingers crossed for some huge revelation – ‘The Gray Man 2’, anyone?

  • Ryan Gosling Interested in playing Ghost Rider

Sooner or later, every actor will probably end up playing a role ( or at least having a cameo in) a Marvel Cinematic Universe production on either the big or small screens.

When the first word arrived about Marvel developing the character of Nova as a potential movie or Disney+ TV series, there was follow-up speculation that Ryan Gosling could be playing the energy powered space-based law enforcer also known as Richard Ryder.

Gosling, however, recently spoke to Joshua Horowitz for his ‘Happy Sad Confused’ Podcast, and when the subject of the Nova speculation was brought up, Gosling shot down the rumors, denying he was connected with the character.

Yet he later got in touch with Horowitz and admitted that if he is going to end up becoming a super-powered character, he’s interested in Ghost Rider.

The character, at least with the alter ego Johnny Blaze, first appeared in the pages of Marvel Comics via ‘Marvel Spotlight #5’.

Created by Gary Friedrich and Mike Ploog, the Blaze character is a motorcycle stunt performer who strikes a deal with the demon Mephisto in order save the life of his surrogate father Crash Simpson.

This Faustian pact bonds Johnny to Zarathos, the Spirit of Vengeance. Through that connection, he’s granted the power to control Hellfire, and inflicts pain on wrongdoers using the Penance Stare.

Nicolas Cage in 2007's 'Ghost Rider.'
Nicolas Cage in 2007’s ‘Ghost Rider.’

Blaze also has a fiery chain and rides a Hell Cycle, his head aflame when he’s in full-on Ghost Rider mode.

In movies, the character has been brought to the screen twice by Nicolas Cage, who starred in 2007’s ‘Ghost Rider’, directed by Mark Steven Johnson and 2011’s ‘Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance’, by Neveldine and Taylor.

Neither film exactly set the critical response alight, so there is plenty of scope for a re-invention.

On the small-screen front, a different version of the Rider character, Robbie Reyes (originating in ‘All New Ghost Rider #1 comic and created by Felipe Smith and Tradd Moore) appeared on ‘Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., played by Gabriel Luna.

Given that the series is no longer considered truly canon for the MCU, it seems unlikely that Luna’s take on the character will make it across to Disney+. And if Cage wanted to come back, Marvel might consider that, but should the company have a shot at securing Gosling’s services, we’re sure the team would jump at the chance.

For now, this exists primarily in the rumor sphere: Gosling hasn’t confirmed any official meetings with Marvel and the Kevin Feige’s team naturally won’t comment on the concept until they are ready to announce (though Comic-Con is coming up in a couple of weeks).

Next up for Gosling is Netflix’s action thriller ‘The Gray Man’, which will be on limited release from July 15th before landing on the streaming service on July 22nd.

He’s also been at work on Warner Bros.’ ‘Barbie’ alongside Margot Robbie, with that film due on July 21st next year.

  • It’s Ryan Gosling Vs Chris Evans in ‘The Gray Man’ Trailer

Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans in Netflix's 'The Gray Man.'
(L to R) Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans in Netflix’s ‘The Gray Man.’

“Wanna make an omelet? Gotta kill some people,” proclaims Chris Evans’ lethal operative Lloyd Hansen, a man for whom the words “awful mustache” never registers when he looks in the mirror. He’s the enthusiastic psycho who forms one half-of the killer leading combo in the new trailer for Joe and Anthony Russo’s new action movie, ‘The Gray Man’.

Though the sibling directors have shot one movie (the Tom Holland-starring addiction drama ‘Cherry’) and produced a variety of others, this represents their full return to big-scale filmmaking since the gigantic, box office-conquering ‘Avengers: Endgame’.

The setup is a relatively simple one: Ryan Gosling, the other half of that leading duo, is Court Gentry, AKA Sierra Six. Plucked from a federal penitentiary and recruited by his handler, Donald Fitzroy (Billy Bob Thornton), Gentry was once a highly skilled, CIA-sanctioned merchant of death. He’s Sierra Six, one of the people the Agency calls in when it needs absolute deniability.

But now, after discovering evidence of a dark conspiracy, the tables have turned and Six is the target, hunted across the globe by Lloyd, a former cohort at the CIA, who will stop at nothing to take him out. Agent Dani Miranda (Ana de Armas) has his back. He’ll need it.

Adapted from Mark Greaney’s series of spy novels by Joe Russo and the directors’ regular screenwriting compatriots Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, ‘The Gray Man’ is very much in the ‘Bourne’ mold – globe-trotting thrillers where our central hero is hunted down by the people who once trusted him to get the job done. See also: ‘John Wick’.

Gosling’s Gentry is a very capable man, quick with his fists and very creative when it comes to violence. But Evans’ Hansen is pretty much his match, so it’ll be fun to watch these two go up against each other.

Yet it’s not just the central pair. The cast here also includes the likes of Jessica Henwick, Wagner Moura, Dhanush, Alfre Woodard, Regé-Jean Page, Julia Butters, Eme Ikwuakor and Scott Haze.

Both Gosling and Evans know what they’re doing in this sphere, and Evans in particular looks to be having fun playing against type as the psycho villain. It’s almost as though his Ransom Drysdale from ‘Knives Out’ joined the CIA.

‘The Gray Man’ represents the latest big-budget gamble by Netflix, who stumped up roughly $200 million for the Russo duo to bring their magic touch a new action spectacle, with the hopes that they’ll also deliver on the character side of things. And, of course, that it’ll launch another franchise from the pair’s AGBO company to go along with the likes of the Chris Hemsworth-starring ‘Extraction’, which has a sequel already in the works.

‘The Gray Man’ takes aim at a limited release in theaters from July 15, before arriving on Netflix on July 22nd.
