    • Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling have been talked about as cast.
    • Story details are officially locked in a vault.

We’ve been hearing talk of a prequel movie set in the ‘Ocean’s Eleven’ world for while now, with the likes of Margot Robbie (who is also producing) and her ‘Barbie’ co-star Ryan Gosling taking the lead roles.

Things have been quiet of late –– presumably because the script has proved a tough nut to crack. Still, there is some news to report now, with Deadline bringing word that ‘Twisters’ Lee Isaac Chung is in talks to direct the movie.

Robbie and Gosling are not confirmed for the movie just yet, but if Chung makes a deal, it points to some positive forward movement.

Deadline’s report mentions that the script remains secret, though previous stories brought word that it’ll be set in 1962, and focus on a pair of thieves who target expensive earrings during a mansion event followed by a plot to steal precious diamond in Monte Carlo.

Seeking payback after something goes wrong, they recruit a team to sabotage his Monaco Grand Prix victory and swipe the gem.

Carrie Solomon wrote the most recent draft of the screenplay, but there may well have been others involved since then.

The likes of Jay Roach and Molly Rose have been talked up as directors previously, but it would seem Chung is the current choice given the success of ‘Twisters’.

What else is happening in the ‘Ocean’s world?

George Clooney in 'Ocean's Eleven'. Photo: Warner Bros. Pictures.

The last thing we heard on the ‘Ocean’s front was ‘The Fall Guy’ director David Leitch entering talks to direct a new outing for George Clooney and co. in the main series of movies that includes ‘Ocean’s Eleven’, ‘Ocean’s Twelve’ and ‘Ocean’s Thirteen’.

But since those initial stories there has been little update.

Clooney, who is a producer on the ‘Ocean’s franchise in addition to its lead actor, told Uproxx about a development for the future back in 2023:

“We have a really good script for another ‘Ocean’s’ now, so we may end up doing another one. It’s actually a great script. the idea is kind of like ‘Going in Style.’ ”

That’s a nod to Martin Brest’s 1979 heist comedy, which famously starred George Burns, Art Carney, Lee Strasberg and Charles Hallahan as senior citizens who pull off a bank heist.

When will the ‘Ocean’s’ prequel movie be on screens?

Warner Bros. has, somewhat smartly, chosen not to plant a flag for this one just yet, which makes sense since it’s still in development.

Back in 2022, Netflix looked to stay in the video game adaptation race by nabbing the rights to developers Epic Games and The Coalition’s successful title ‘Gears of War.’

Since then, it has been slow progress in development –– but then, this has been a tricky project to bring to screens.

    o9Nhbsut4jGG3iv9zyDNo4

Way back in 2007, New Line Cinema had the rights, aiming to bring a theatrical version to life, with ‘Underworld’ and ‘Live Free or Die Hard’ director Len Wiseman attached to direct.

But it lingered in limbo for a few years, with Wiseman ditching the project and reports of budget cuts. Around 2016, word arrived that Universal and Microsoft were working on a version of the movie that would be separate from the games’ canon.

Again, things went awfully quiet until Netflix announced it had taken over the rights.

Now, via The Hollywood Reporter, word arrives that the streaming service has zeroed in on the filmmaker it wants to bring the movie to life: David Leitch.

The director has become something of a go-to for action, and ‘Gears of War’ certainly fits that bill.

What’s the story of the ‘Gears of War’ games?

    'Gears of War'. Photo: Gearsofwar.com.

Set on the planet Sera, the game thrusts players into a battle for survival between humans and a race of creatures that surface from the bowels of the planet known as the Locust Horde.

Players assume identities of soldiers on Delta Squad, a ragtag fireteam led by disgraced sergeant Marcus Fenix, which is now charged with leading humanity’s last stand as they fight to save Sera’s inhabitants.

‘Gears,’ developed by Epic Games (and now overseen by Canadian company The Coalition), became an instant success when it debuted on the Xbox 360 in November 2006.

It became one of the most popular games on the Xbox Live service, overtaking ‘Halo 2,’ and sold more than 3 million units worldwide in its first 10 weeks. It received numerous awards, including Gamespot’s Game of the Year and the Interactive Achievement Awards’ Overall Game of the Year.

Netflix has big plans for the project –– an animated series is in parallel development, with the aim to expand the franchise if this first film is a success.

Jon Spaihts, who has been working with Denis Villeneuve on adapting Frank Herbert’s ‘Dune’ books for Legendary, is writing the script for the movie.

What else is David Leitch involved with?

David Leitch has spun quite the career from his days as a stuntman doubling for Keanu Reeves. After graduating to stunt coordinator and second-unit director, he co-directed ‘John Wick’ with action colleague Chad Stahelski.

He’s since gone on to make the likes of ‘Atomic Blonde,’ ‘Deadpool 2,’ ‘Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw’ and ‘Bullet Train.’

Last year’s ‘The Fall Guy,’ which starred Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt, didn’t succeed at the box office but doesn’t seem to have hurt Leitch’s prospects.

(L to R) Director David Leitch and Ryan Gosling (as Colt Seavers) on the set of ‘The Fall Guy.’

He has a lot of other projects on his plate at the moment, both as a director and as producer via his 87North company, which he runs with wife and fellow producer Kelly McCormick.

Currently in first position for his directorial side is ‘How to Rob a Bank,’ which will star Nicholas Hoult, Zoë Kravitz, Anna Sawai, Pete Davidson and Rhenzy Feliz.

Amazon MGM Studios is backing that movie, whose plot details are locked in a vault for now, but Mark Bianculli wrote the script and is an executive producer. Leitch is at work on the movie now and aims to have it in theaters on September 4th, 2026.

There’s also the long-bubbling ‘Ocean’s 14’ movie, which Leitch has been in talks to direct.

As producers, Leitch and McCormick have a wealth of projects in the works –– they’re aboard sequels to ‘Nobody’ and Christmas thriller ‘Violent Night’ and a variety of others, including ‘Ruiner,’ ‘Red Shirt’ and another video game title, ‘Just Cause.’

Assuming his ‘Gears’ deal goes through, Leitch will also produce that, while The Coalition is also involved.

What other video game titles are headed to screens?

Video game adaptations are certainly having a moment on screens big and small –– ‘A Minecraft Movie’ is still earning money at the box office, while ‘Fallout’ has been successful for Amazon’s Prime Video arm.

Other titles on the way include sequels to ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ and ‘Five Nights at Freddy’s’.

It’s not all sunshine and roses, however, as some movies in the genre haven’t performed as well –– Screen Gems’ ‘Until Dawn’ is a recent example, taking in less than $50 million worldwide so far (albeit on a relatively thrifty $15 million budget).

When will ‘Gears of War’ be on Netflix?

While Leitch is reported as in negotiations, Netflix has yet to confirm his attachment to the movie. So chances are we’ll have to wait to see whether this moves forward quickly, and will be delayed at least until after Leitch makes the bank heist movie.

At least, that’s the plan for Warner Bros. and George Clooney’s Smokehouse Pictures company, which have been trying for a few years now to put together an ‘Ocean’s Fourteen.’

It would aim to reunite the reunite the crew from the previous outing, which includes Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon and more for a new movie.

Yet while Clooney seems committed to coming back, director Steven Soderbergh is apparently sitting this one out, having handled the previous three main entries.

There were rumours last year that Edward Berger, who made the Oscar-winning ‘All Quiet on the Western Front,’ (and is back in awards contention with ‘Conclave’) was in talks to take it on, but he denied them in an interview with Collider:

“Well, I feel very honored that people think of me to be able to do something like that, and of course, I would love the challenge to do either, but again, it’s rumors that are just people wanting to print some news that just have no basis in fact.”

Now, though Jeff Sneider is reporting that David Leitch, who most recently made ‘The Fall Guy,’ is in early talks to tackle the new movie.

The 1960 original saw Frank Sinatra as Danny Ocean, who gathered old World War II colleagues to pull off a heist in Vegas. His crew included Rat Pack pals Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Peter Lawford, Joey Bishop and more.

It’s not exactly considered the greatest movie ever made, so a remake was a smart move.

The updated ‘Ocean’s Eleven’ landed in 2001, with Soderbergh directing from a script by Ted Griffin.

Clooney played Ocean, with his crew including Pitt, Damon, Casey Affleck, Scott Caan, Bernie Mac and more. They staged a sophisticated and elaborate casino heist involving robbing three Las Vegas casinos simultaneously during a popular boxing event.

It was a success for Warner Bros., earning $450 million from an $85 million budget.

Its 2004 sequel, the Europe-set ‘Ocean’s Twelve,’ also directed by Soderbergh (with a script this time by George Nolfi) saw Danny rustle up one more team member so he can pull off three major European heists and help his team pay back debts.

With a bigger budget ($110 million) it wasn’t quite as successful, but still earned $320 million.

The final film in the Soderbergh-directed trilogy, 2007’s ‘Ocean’s Thirteen’ had Brian Koppelman and David Levien on scripting duty and had Danny rounding up the crew for a third heist after casino owner Willy Bank (Al Pacino) double-crosses one of the original eleven, Reuben Tishkoff (Elliott Gould).

With a budget reduced back down to $85 million, it crept close to ‘Twelve’s earnings with $311 worldwide.

In 2018, we got spin-off ‘Ocean’s Eight,’ directed by Gary Ross from a script he wrote with Olivia Milch.

Sandra Bullock took over lead duties as Debbie Ocean, Danny’s younger sister, who is released from prison and gathers her own crew including characters played by Cate Blanchett, Mindy Kaling, Awkwafina, Sarah Paulson, Rhianna, Helena Bonham Carter and Anne Hathaway to pull off a jewel heist at the Met Gala.

The movie was budgeted around the $70 million mark and earned $297 million worldwide.

It was remade in 2017 by Zach Braff with a cast that featured Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine and Alan Arkin. We’re thinking it’s a comic reference to the ‘Ocean’s’ cast aging…

Good memory! An ‘Ocean’s’ prequel film that has ‘Barbie’ duo Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling attached to star has been in development for a couple of years now.

With Jay Roach reportedly directing, Carrie Solomon’s script is set in Europe in the 1960s and may see Gosling and Robbie as Danny Ocean’s heist-happy parents.

There has been little movement on that one recently, so we’ll wait and see if it actually comes to fruition.

    • Ryan Gosling is in talks for a new ‘Star Wars’ movie.
    • ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’s Shawn Levy is directing.
    • Details on the film are scant right now.

What a difference a ‘Deadpool’ makes.

In this case, we mean ‘Deadpool & Wolverine,’ which has earned more than $1.33 billion worldwide and helped turn Marvel’s fortunes around while boosting Disney’s box office to a great degree last year.

That movie’s director, prolific filmmaker/producer Shawn Levy, is naturally now of great value to the studio, so his other projects based there are getting renewed attention.

And one of them, set in that particular galaxy far, far away, just got an A-list shot in the arm, as Ryan Gosling is, according to The Hollywood Reporter, in talks to star for Levy in his ‘Star Wars’ movie.

As with most things in development under the Lucasfilm banner, details are scarce. We do know that Levy, despite being seemingly busy with 500 different projects at once (including the aforementioned ‘Deadpool’ movie and producing/directing duties on the final season of ‘Stranger Things’ to name just two) has been developing his untitled ‘Star Wars’ movie since at least 2022.

Jonathan Tropper, who collaborated with Levy on films such as ‘This is Where I Leave You’ and ‘The Adam Project,’ has been working on a script for over a year. Levy is also producing the feature via his 21 Laps banner, joining ‘Star Wars’ steward and Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy.

The time period for the potential new offering is unknown, though it reportedly charts its own course and doesn’t feature anyone from the Skywalker saga, with the emphasis on this being a standalone adventure.

If Gosling’s deal closes, the hope is to have the new movie shooting in the fall, which means Levy would likely press pause on working on the planned boyband comedy that his usual Ryan –– that would be Reynolds –– has been developing. Still, given Levy’s work ethic, we wouldn’t be surprised if he knocked that out this summer before diving into ‘Star Wars.’

Of course, for now, it’s all unofficial, with neither Lucasfilm nor Disney offering comment, but with Star Wars Celebration set for April this year in Tokyo, we could see more solid news then.

Ryan Gosling is Colt Seavers in ‘The Fall Guy,’ directed by David Leitch. © Universal Studios. All Rights Reserved.

Gosling, who was one of the key elements in 2023’s monster hit ‘Barbie’ had a slightly less successful 2023, as romantic action comedy ‘The Fall Guy’ –– which was perfectly entertaining in our opinion –– failed to land at the box office and only earned $181 million from a $125 budget.

He’ll be back on our screens next year in another space-based project, as he’s in the lead in ‘Project Hail Mary,’ the latest film adapted from the work of ‘The Martian’s Andy Weir, with Phil Lord and Chris Miller directing from a script by ‘Martian’ man Drew Goddard.

That one errs more towards the sci-fi than space opera, featuring an astronaut who has to try and save the planet. It’ll arrive on May 20th, 2026.

Behind the camera, Gosling is an executive producer on a Donald E. Westlake adaptation called ‘The Actor,’ though that movie has yet to land a release date.

And oddly, Gosling’s name has been linked with ‘Star Wars’ in the past, when rumors spread online in 2013 that he and Zac Efron were being eyed by ‘The Force Awakens’ filmmaker J.J. Abrams for a part that may have eventually become Kylo Ren (as played in the sequel trilogy by Adam Driver).

What else is in development for big screen ‘Star Wars’?

(L to R) Director James Mangold, Dave Filoni, and director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy at Star Wars Celebration 2023.

Jon Favreau’s ‘The Mandalorian & Grogu’ is first among ‘Star Wars’ equals right now, having shot last year and now speeding through post-production for a release next year.

Mandalorian’ co-creator and fellow steward Dave Filoni is still putting the pieces together for his own film, while one that continues the story of Rey (Daisy Ridley) is in development from director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy but appears to keep hitting stumbling blocks and has been removed from the schedule for now.

And then there’s James Mangold’s film, which explores the origins of the Jedi and early force users and is awaiting a release date.

We’d guess that while Filoni (who promoted earlier this year to Chief Creative Officer at Lucasfilm) is still going full speed ahead on his movie, he’s also been busy figuring out a second season of ‘Ahsoka.’

Here’s what he said about that:

“I’m so well into that as well… I’ve been writing it, and I’m still the single writer on it, and so I’ve been enjoying doing that, but it’s a challenge, of course, and working some of these arcs through has been a challenge and making sure it’s all going to come out in a way that I think is exciting for fans. I know that they’re interested in where some of the things I developed in Season One. I’m pretty happy with it… Love working with Rosario [Dawson], so I can’t wait to get back to that.”

Beyond those, there are several movies (and potential trilogies) which don’t seem to be moving forward and may have been scrapped altogether, including new potential movies from ‘The Last Jedi’s Rian Johnson (who is busy with his ‘Knives Out’ movies and may not wish to dip back into the toxic stew of ‘Star Wars’ fandom after the divisive reaction to his first effort) and ‘Wonder Woman’s Patty Jenkins, who had a much-touted ‘Rogue Squadron’ story of rebel pilots that appears to have had trouble leaving the development hanger.

When will the next ‘Star Wars’ movie be in theaters?

So far, only ‘The Mandalorian & Grogu’ has a confirmed release date, that being May 22nd, 2026.

Disney and Lucasfilm do have an untitled ‘Star Wars’ movie on their release calendar for December 17th, 2027, so if the Levy film does hit lightspeed, chances are it could fly into that slot.

The Fall Guy’ is not just a rom-com between a stuntman and a director. It is also a love letter to the stunt community. As a former stunt performer, director David Leitch (‘Deadpool 2’, ‘Atomic Blonde’) paid extra attention to the action sequences and fight scenes in the film, ensuring they’re grand, authentic, and most importantly, highlight the men and women who perform them.

The film is (loosely) based on the 80’s TV show of the same name, starring Lee Majors. In the show, Majors’ Colt Seavers works as a bounty hunter on the side, where his stunt skills come in quite handy in apprehending the wanted. In Leitch’s film, Colt is played by Ryan Gosling, who is tasked to find the missing action star Tom Ryder. All the while he is trying to win back the love of his life – Jody Moreno, played by Emily Blunt.

Joining Gosling and Blunt are Aaron Taylor-Johnson (‘Bullet Train’), Hannah Waddingham (‘Ted Lasso’), Winston Duke (‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’), and Stephanie Hsu (‘Joy Ride’).

With former stunt performer David Leitch at the helm of a film about a stuntman, one can expect the movie to showcase some of the most daring stunt sequences. Not only is ‘The Fall Guy’ filled with spectacular action, but it broke the record for most cannon rolls in a film. The record was previously held by ‘Casino Royale,’ where James Bond’s Aston Martin rolled seven times as it swerved off the road.

Performed by stunt driver Logan Holiday, the cannon roll sequence in ‘The Fall Guy’ broke records when it rolled eight and a half times, setting the new record for most cannon rolls performed in a film.
