  • ‘The Craft’ Reboot Finds Its Director: Zoe Lister-Jones

‘The Craft’ Reboot Finds Its Director: Zoe Lister-Jones

    IFC Films

Blumhouse founder Jason Blum got a lot of blowback last year when he commented on the “difficulty” of finding women to direct a horror film, saying, “There are not a lot of female directors period, and even less who are inclined to do horror.” He later apologized.

And now he’s found a female filmmaker to direct “The Craft” reboot.  Zoe Lister-Jones, who wrote, directed and starred in 2017’s “Band Aid,” will be writing and directing the remake of the 1996 film about a coven of high school witches.

The official synopsis: “When starting at a new school, Hannah befriends Tabby, Lourdes, and Frankie, and quickly becomes the fourth member of their Clique. Hannah soon learns that she somehow brings great power to the quartet.”

Lister-Jones also starred in CBS’s “Life in Pieces” and several episodes of “New Girl.”

A remake of the ’90s film has been in the works for years, with “Honeymoon” filmmaker Leigh Janiak once rumored to direct.

No cast has yet been announced and we don’t know if any of the original cast — Robin Tunney, Fairuza Balk, Neve Campbell, and Rachel True— will appear in any capacity.

The film is reportedly slated for a July production start. Andrew Fleming, who directed the first film, will serve as an executive producer on the remake.

  • Skeet Ulrich Talks ‘Riverdale’ & Explains Why Those Johnny Depp Comparisons ‘Hurt’

    “Riverdale.”

Ulrich, 47, plays Jughead Jones’ father F.P. Jones, and he talked to Cosmo about his career, popularity, family, and even the Harvey Weinstein scandal. (“I knew,” Ulrich admits. “Most people knew.”)

Ulrich was born Bryan Ray Trout and reportedly got his nickname from a coach who noticed his small build. In Hollywood, he became famous from movies like “The Craft” and “Scream,” but also through constantly being compared to that bigger star, Johnny Depp.

“All the time,” he told Cosmo. “There’s certainly worse people to be compared to … I always thought he was a very good-looking guy.” But the talent digs stung. “It hurt when people compared our acting and [said] I’m not half the actor he is,” Ulrich says. “And yet I think I’ve done some stuff he couldn’t do. He also did — what was it called, [with] Angelina Jolie? ‘The Tourist.’ So we all have ’em.”

US actor Johnny Depp accepts his award for FavoritDespite Depp comparisons, Ulrich earned his own heartthrob status, although in a very different era from his current on-screen son:

“This was when you received hard fan mail, and there would be trash bags full of letters, so I was aware that I had a popularity. As to where I sat on the heartthrob scale, I had no [idea]. There was no real barometer. You go on Instagram now and, yeah, we all know Cole is a heartthrob. It’s very obvious.”

Premiere of TNT's 'Into the West' - AfterpartySpeaking of Cole, apparently Cole and KJ Apa (Archie) helped Ulrich build his family’s chicken coop, when they had time off-set. In terms of Papa Jones, Ulrich defended him as “a great dad without means”:

“To me, the summation of F.P. Jones is ‘sometimes good people do bad things for the right reasons.’ What I love about him is he’s clearly the most blue-collar of anyone on that show. He’s the working class, he’s the coal miner, the construction worker. He’s the guy who’s sh*t upon day in and day out by society, and that was evident through the first season.”

Which way is out?!! Thanks for the pic @kjapa

“Riverdale” Season 2 just started last week and continues tonight (Wednesday, Oct. 18) with Episode 2, “Chapter Fifteen: Nighthawks,” which has this synopsis:

“Betty leads a movement to save Pop’s from closing; Archie’s friends worry about his behavior; Jughead’s efforts to find F.P. a new lawyer may have serious repercussions; Veronica finds herself caught between Hiram and Hermoine.”

  • ‘The Craft’ Is a Wicked ’90s Time Capsule That’ll Make You Hate Los Angeles: Podcast

THE CRAFT“We are those ‘The Craft‘-loving weirdos, mister.” Well, half of us are, the other half want to invoke Manon and get back the hour and 40 minutes spent watching the movie.

Tim picked the (apparently divisive) ’90s teen witch thriller, which stars perhaps the most ’90s cast ever assembled: Robin Tunney, Neve Campbell, Fairuza Balk, Rachel True, and Skeet Ulrich. Topics discussed include obvious wigs, Catholic schools with no rules, terrible special effects, terrible parents, Breckin Meyer‘s stellar douche acting, and the hell-on-Earth that is Los Angeles. (Seriously, there are a lot of trash fires and snake-loving ne’er-do-wells in this movie’s version of L.A.)

Next week’s movie, “John Carter,” comes courtesy of special guest Drew Taylor, who will somehow try to convince us that watching a loincloth-clad Taylor Kitsch learn how to battle aliens in low gravity for two hours and 12 minutes is time well spent.

  • ‘The Craft’: 10 Things You (Probably) Didn’t Know About One of Your Favorite ’90s Movies

Twenty years ago this week, four teenage girls dabbled in magic powers and unleashed forces more powerful than they could have imagined. We’re not just talking about the plot of “Charmed”).

For all its influence and popularity, there’s still much you may not know about “The Craft.” Here are some of the secrets behind the beloved teen-witch cautionary tale.
    1. Star Robin Tunney (center), who plays Sarah, wore a wig throughout the film, having recently shaved her head for her role in “Empire Records.”

    2. How did director Andrew Fleming do so well in understanding the mindset of his teen-girl heroines — not only in “The Craft,” but also in “Dick” and “Nancy Drew“? According to Fleming, “Dick” co-star Michelle Williams figured out the answer. “Michelle said that, despite my manly exterior, I’m actually a 15-year-old girl, and I do feel very giddy and school girlish quite a lot of the time.”
    3. Fairuza Balk (Nancy) is the only one of the four leads who was an actual practicing Wiccan, at least for a little while. At the time of the shoot, she was the owner of Panpipes Magickal Marketplace, an occult shop in Hollywood.

    4. Bonnie in “The Craft” was the first major film role for Neve Campbell. Skeet Ulrich (Chris) and Campbell worked together for the first time here, a few months before they reunited in “Scream.”
Hexenclub, Der / Craft, TheUSA 1996Regie: Andrew FlemingDarsteller: Robin Tunney, Rachel True, Fairuza Balk, Neve CampbellRollen: Sarah, Rochelle, Nancy, Bonnie5. Rachel True was nearly 30 when she played the teenage Rochelle. Classic Hollywood.

    6. The beach ritual scene seemed to summon up some real-life creepy vibes. During filming, a horde of bats appeared and lingered (creepy). The waves extinguished the candles. And at the climactic moment, when Balk’s Nancy cried out for the spirit to fill her, the power went out.
    7. The knife fight between Tunney and Balk won the MTV Movie Award for Best Fight, beating such experienced big-screen fighters as Jackie Chan (in “Police Story 4”) and Jim Brown (in “Mars Attacks”).

    8. The film cost a reported $15 million to produce. It earned back $56 million at the worldwide box office.

    9. “The Craft” has been credited as the main influence on the growth of real-life teen interest in Wicca over the past 20 years.
    10. A year ago, Sony announced plans for a remake, to be written and directed by horror filmmaker Leigh Janiak (“Honeymoon“). Among the original stars, Balk balked, proclaiming on Twitter that she doesn’t approve of remakes in general.

  • ‘The Craft’ Is Getting a Remake and We’re Not Sure How to Feel

The CraftOh, Hollywood, first you destroyed our memories of the ’80s with terrible remakes of “Fame,” “Footloose,” and “Robocop.” Now, you’re going after the ’90s, too?

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sony is remaking “The Craft,” the 1996 teen witch thriller starring Robin Tunney, Neve Campbell, Fairuza Balk, and Rachel True. They’ve hired Leigh Janiak (“Honeymoon”) to co-write and direct the film.

(As an aside, it is cool they hired a female director in the midst of the ACLU’s discrimination suit.)

In the original, Tunney transfers to a new school, where she befriends three aspiring witches. Her own powers can complete their coven and allow them to tap into some serious magic. We loved the dark lipstick, the layered chain necklaces, the fishnets. But it’s hard to imagine all of that translating to the teens of the Teens. Why even call upon the power of Manon when there’s probably an app for that?

And can anyone really fill the shoes of crazy Fairuza Balk?
