A comedy institution and formative influence for many talented people has left us. Bob Newhart, who rose from comedy albums to TV superstardom, has died at the age of 94 following a brief illness.

Newhart is remembered for his hangdog delivery and the ability to spin lines into comedy gold.

Newhart was born in Chicago in September 1929. He attended Loyola University in the city, majoring in commerce and graduating in 1952, when he entered the Army. After ending his military service two years later, he entered Loyola’s law school but flunked out in 1956. He then worked a variety of odd jobs while performing in an Oak Park stock company.

Yet comedy called to him: “I worked as an accountant for 2½ years, then worked as a copywriter,” he said in a 2001 interview for the Television Academy Foundation. “People had always been saying, ‘Gee, you’re funny. You think funny.’ So I just decided I was gonna give it a try and see what happened.”

Here’s what happened, if not immediately: Newhart broke out in 1960 with a pair of No. 1 comedy albums –– despite never having done stand-up before. ‘The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart’ spent 14 weeks atop the Billboard 200 and stayed on that chart for more than two years. ‘The Button-Down Mind Strikes Back!’ arrived about 10 months later and also hit No. 1.

While his first TV attempt, NBC comedy/variety show, ‘The Bob Newhart Show’ (based on his albums) only ran for a season, he would go on to dominate TV comedy for the better part of two decades. Newhart’s first sitcom, also titled ‘The Bob Newhart Show’ debuted on CBS in September 1972. It did well right from the start, finishing in the year-end three-network primetime Top 20 in each of its first three seasons, ultimately running to 1978.

Newhart starred as Bob Hartley, a successful psychologist in Chicago whose deadpan delivery drove the series.

He’d also star in 1982’s ‘Newhart’, also for CBS. This time he played, Dick Loudon, a “how-to” book author who took over a long-closed colonial inn in Vermont. It ran for eight seasons and its series finale is still considered one of TV’s greatest episodes.

Outside of his own shows, Newhart became known as a guest on a raft of series including ‘Murphy Brown’, ‘The Simpsons’, ‘ER’, ‘Desperate Housewives’, ‘NCIS’, ‘Hot in Cleveland’ and an Emmy-winning turn on ‘The Big Bang Theory’ (he also appeared on that show’s spin-off, ‘Young Sheldon’).

The veteran performer appeared in a number of films including ‘In & Out’, ‘Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde’, ‘Horrible Bosses’, ‘First Family’ and ‘Catch-22’.

Yet for a whole generation, he’ll be forever known as the kindly yet deadpan Papa Elf, who raises Buddy (Will Ferrell), a human who ends up at the North Pole after crawling into Santa’s sack as an infant and, in his adult years, heads to New York in search of his actual father (James Caan), in 2003’s ‘Elf‘.

As you might expect given Newhart’s long career and renowned good nature, fellow showbusiness types are lining up to pay tribute. Here are a few select statements.

Judd Apatow took to social media to express his feelings:

Comedian and former politician Al Franken has this to say:

“Bob Newhart was a giant, a genius, and a great guy. I’ll always remember when he hosted ‘SNL‘ and did a stellar show. He was, as you might expect, a joy to work with. May his memory be a blessing.”

Director Paul Feig recalled Newhart this way:

“I had the honor of doing a guest role on Newhart & got to spend the week listening to the great Bob Newhart making us all laugh. A brilliant standup & comedic actor, he was truly one of a kind. His legacy will live on.”

Newhart’s wife Ginny died last year. He is survived by his children, Robert Jr., Timothy, Courtney and Jennifer, and 10 grandchildren.

  • Dianna Agron Talks ‘As They Made Us’

    Dianna Agron and Simon Helberg
(L to R) Dianna Agron and Simon Helberg in ‘As They Made Us.’

Opening in theaters and VOD/Digital on April 8th is the new comedy-drama ‘As They Made Us,’ which marks the directorial debut of ‘The Big Bang Theory’ actress Mayim Bialik.

The film stars Dianna Agron (‘Glee’) as Abigail, a single mother who is forced to care for her dying father, Eugene (Dustin Hoffman). The experience brings out hidden emotions from her troubled childhood, including her resentment towards her abusive father and over bearing mother, Barbara (Candice Bergan).

Now, with her father’s condition worsening, Abigail must locate her estranged brother Nathan (Simon Helberg), who turned his back on them years ago, in order to bring her family back together one last time.

Actress and singer Dianna Agron first gained attention for her role as Quinn Fabray on ‘Glee,’ but has also been featured on other hit TV shows like ‘Veronica Mars,’ and ‘Heroes.’ On the big screen she has appeared in such popular films as ‘Burlesque,’ ‘I Am Number Four,’ ‘The Family’ and ‘Ralph Breaks the Internet.’

Moviefone recently had the pleasure of speaking with Dianna Agron about her work on ‘As They Made Us.’ The popular actress discussed her new movie, her character, playing Dustin Hoffman’s daughter, reuniting with Candice Bergan, creating a brother/sister relationship with Simon Helberg, and being directed by Mayim Bialik.

    dvDmKZIR

You can read the full interview below, or watch a video of the interview in the player above.

Moviefone: To begin with, can you talk about your character Abigail, and her unusual relationship to her family?

Dianna Agron: Yeah, it’s a complex one. So, my character Abigail is kind of really enmeshed herself in all of her family’s pain and trauma and has centered herself in this world in which she takes it upon herself to try to fix so much of what is sometimes unfixable within her family structure.

What this movie really is exploring is the issues with mental health and establishing boundaries, and grief, loss, and how that moves through a family, both singularly, your singular experience, and then the group experience and what that means and what that looks like.

Moviefone: Can you talk about the experience Abigail has taking care of her dying father, and what was it like working on those scenes with the legendary Dustin Hoffman?

DA: My father’s been unwell for more years of my life than he’s been well. So, there was a lot of personal truth I was able to bring to the character. It’s very hard to witness your parent’s cognitive and physical downfall, especially when you have experienced them in whatever way you’ve experienced them and that is not something that you want to be confronted with.

Ultimately it just takes so much strength, and you deal with it as best as you can. So, I think having that experience myself, it definitely helped bring that sense to the character.

Then working with somebody like Dustin is so incredible because he is on from the moment he steps in the room. I remember our first rehearsal, we were reading through something and tears were falling from his eyes, and I just thought, I’m really going to have to bring this. We are not playing around.

I think being surrounded by such incredible actors that just really know how to draw all kinds of emotions out and surprise you in scenes is just the biggest gift. It was so wonderful to be working with Candice again. I had done a film with her about 10 years ago where she had also played my mother, so that was a really fun additional bonus in this film.

    Dianna Agron and Dustin Hoffman
(L to R) Dianna Agron and Dustin Hoffman in ‘As They Made Us.’

MF: Since you had experience playing Candice Bergan’s daughter in another movie, was it easy to recreate that dynamic with her on this project?

DA: No, because I think 10 years is a really long time, and when I shot that other film where she played my mother, I was such a small part of that cast. So, I wouldn’t say that we had an enormous amount of time to really get into the weeds of a friendship. We were just making this indie film where everything was fast and furious. So, while I had such a great fondness for that experience and her, this movie was really our chance to get to know each other so much better.

That was the other thing that I enjoyed so much, with both Candace and Dustin, their storytelling is just the most compelling thing. You can ask them about every aspect of their career and working on specific projects. We would ask about some of the discoveries that were made along the way that really left lasting impressions in all of our minds, and all of those characters and films. So, I really relished every day that I got to go to set and ask anything that I wanted to.

MF: What was it like working with Simon Helberg on the unusual brother/sister relationship between your two characters?

DA: I think it’s interesting. I have a brother and we are incredibly close, and yet there are times, just be it work, life, et cetera, where we will go surprisingly a few weeks without talking to each other. Those few weeks sometimes feel like a year depending on what is going on in our worlds. I think kind of pulling from that aspect of having my own sibling that I care so much about, we are so different, and how we move and pass each other in our own life experiences, that was helpful.

Then Simon’s just such an incredible actor and we really, I think, trusted each other. I mean, speaking from my own experience, I really trusted him. So, I was so pleased to always play and see what that felt like. That friction always felt so monumental when it was there. The love felt so palpable when it was there.

There’s one scene in particular that I think is one of the hardest scenes. It was one of the hardest scenes to shoot in the movie and one of the ones I’m most proud of, and it’s the scene with Simon. I have such love for this whole team and that experience. It was really rewarding.

Simon Helberg, Candice Bergan, Dustin Hoffman, Mayim Bialik, and Dianna Agron on set
(L to R) Simon Helberg, Candice Bergan, Dustin Hoffman, Mayim Bialik, and Dianna Agron on the set of ‘As They Made Us.’

MF: Finally, can you talk about working with director Mayim Bialik and watching her execute her vision for this film?

DA: We first met on a Zoom meeting, and she was very generous with her own personal stories and why this movie meant so much to her. We both shared in that way very deeply, and very quickly. That is just how she is. She comes to set and while she knew everything that she wanted to achieve in every scene, she’s very open and can really help you understand everything that needs to be achieved in those scenes and what was very meaningful to her.

There were also moments that I really loved where we would set up the camera in a wider shot, and there was not going to be any cutting between the scene. In that sense, those experiences and those moments felt much more like stage work, which is incredible because you think, okay, I’m bringing this bag of tricks. I know what my character wants in the scene. I know what they’re trying to achieve. I know where the emotional core has to hit from.

Then you really have to focus and access all those things and know that that take that you just shot might be the one take that’s used in that moment, and that’s really thrilling. I loved that she added that aspect of filmmaking into our project.

  • You Can Now Hang Out In Sheldon and Leonard’s Apartment From ‘The Big Bang Theory’

You Can Now Hang Out In Sheldon and Leonard’s Apartment From ‘The Big Bang Theory’

    Charley Gallay/Getty

You know all the words to “Soft Kitty.” You can recite every rule of the Roommate Agreement. Still, there’s one thing no fan of “The Big Bang Theory” has been able to do until now:  sit in Sheldon’s oft-preferred spot.

Now Warner Bros. Studio Tour Hollywood guests can finally explore the braniacs’ famed living room, triple-knock on Penny’s door and yes, even get comfortable in Sheldon’s precious couch corner, just like the beloved characters from the CBS sitcom.

It’s not the Big Bang sets at actual scale but an abbreviated version of them — yet even with the living room feeling smaller in person than it did on TV,  it’s eerily identical through your phone’s camera lens. Every detail is the right place, too. Even die-hard fans will recognize the Apartment 4A set as the real deal, right down to the Luke Skywalker and Superman figurines, that Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots closet door poster and the DNA double helix Sheldon and Leonard spent 139 ½ hours rebuilding in the recent finale.

    Charley Gallay/Getty

There’s not enough space for the entirety of Leonard and Penny’s current home, but guests can go as far as the telescope in the living room’s back corner and snap pictures while pretending to be comforted by tea in a shrunken-down kitchen, complete with a Batman cookie jar. The only place guests can’t sit? The makeshift Cal Tech Physics Lab Cafeteria, as it contains iconic costumes worn by Raj, Howard, Sheldon and Amy Farrah Fowler, Sheldon’s eventual wife.

    Charley Gallay/Getty

From Penny’s apartment exterior — complete with on-camera outfits worn by actors Melissa Rauch and Kaley Cuoco — to the hallway towards Leonard’s room, snap a picture in front of any of the sets and it’ll look just like the real thing, making for some major Instagram moments. Fans can even get their picture taken beside the iconic Big Bang broken elevator. (Just don’t try to walk up the stairs — it’s a facade.)

These three sets from the longest-running multi-camera sitcom of all time are just some of the cinematic experiences offered on Warner Bros. Studio Tour Hollywood. Here, attendees can sit inside the Central Perk set from “Friends,” get up close to “Aquaman” costumes and even be placed into a Hogwarts house by the Sorting Hat from “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone,” all but guaranteeing you’ll have a better time on your next vacation than sitting through an episode of Fun with Flags.

Stage 25, where all 279 episodes of the sitcom taped, has also officially been renamed “The Big Bang Theory” stage — one of only five shows to ever be commemorated as such. “To know that the show has a life beyond our efforts is a terrific feeling,” said creator Chuck Lorre, reflecting on the hit show’s 12-season run. “Every time I go by I look at the plaque on the wall and it feels special. It’s quite a humbling experience to see that plaque go up.”

Another terrific feeling? Knowing you can scoot into Sheldon’s spot and there’s not a thing he can do about it.

Warner Bros. Studio Tour tickets start at $69, and can be purchased online in advance.

    CBS

CBS has a big farewell planned for “The Big Bang Theory.”

The network will air a half-hour retrospective special on the night that the series finale airs, Deadline reports. Called “Unraveling the Mystery: A Big Bang Farewell,” it will be a walk down memory lane with stars Johnny Galecki (Leonard) and Kaley Cuoco (Penny). They’ll discuss their 12 years on the series and give viewers some new behind-the-scenes intel, including sharing memorable moments and leading a set tour.

The end of “The Big Bang Theory” was announced in August, when word came that the show’s 12th season would be its last. It later was reported that star Jim Parsons (Sheldon) had decided to move on; as one of the show’s big three stars alongside Galecki and Cuoco, his planned exit prompted the end.

The final season has been bittersweet for fans, but it has had a lot of high points, of course. For example, “The Big Bang Theory” recently filmed its 276th episode, making it the longest-running multi-camera sitcom in TV history. We expect to celebrate that major milestone and others in the upcoming special.

“Unraveling the Mystery: A Big Bang Farewell” airs Thursday, May 16 at 9:30 p.m. ET/PT on CBS.

“The Big Bang Theory” cast, crew, and fans may have to say goodbye to the popular show soon, but in the meantime, there is cause for celebration: The comedy series recently took a longstanding record from “Cheers.”

Now in its 12th season, “The Big Bang Theory” has reached production of its 276th episode. That makes it the longest-running multi-camera sitcom in TV history, as the show announced via social media Wednesday. “Cheers” ran for 275 episodes before concluding in 1993.

The “Big Bang Theory” milestone was sweet indeed. The cast posed for a photo with a giant tray of cupcakes that spelled out “276.”

To date, 272 of those 276 episodes have aired; the next new one will air on April 4. Then, after the series finale airs on May 16, there will be 279 episodes in total.

“The Big Bang Theory” airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on CBS.

It all started with the big bang, and the show will likely end with one, too.

“The Big Bang Theory” is in the midst of its 12th and final season, and the end just keeps getting closer. CBS has revealed the series finale date, and yes, it’s really happening. The sitcom’s hour-long final episode will air on Thursday, May 16, Deadline reports.

News came in August that Season 12 would be the last hurrah for the (mostly) science-loving gang. Jim Parsons (Sheldon) made the decision to move on, and co-creator and executive producer Chuck Lorre had previously decided the show would end if it lost any of its three main stars. The exit of either Johnny Galecki (Leonard) or Kaley Cuoco (Penny) would also have prompted its cancellation.

“The Big Bang Theory” had a good run. The sitcom, which also stars Mayim Bialik, Melissa Rauch, Simon Helberg, and Kunal Nayyar, has been nominated four times for the outstanding comedy series Primetime Emmy Award. Meanwhile, for his role, Parsons has won three Emmys for outstanding lead actor in a comedy series.

Sofia Vergara Is the Highest-Paid TV Actress for the 7th Year in a Row

MODERN FAMILY - "Good Grief" - It's another epic Halloween full of costumes, tricks and treats for the Dunphy-Pritchett-Tucker clan as they deal with huge, unexpected news, on "Modern Family," WEDNESDAY, OCT. 24 (9:00-9:31 p.m. EDT), on The ABC Television Network. SOFIA VERGARA
    ABC/Tony Rivetti

Sofia Vergara is the highest-paid star on TV — by so much — for the seventh year in a row.

She’s not just the highest-paid actress, she also topped the list of actors’ pay, which was released yesterday.

But Vergara only makes about half of her $42.5 million payday from “Modern Family.” According to Forbes, the rest of her money is from her many endorsements, plus lucrative licensing deals.

As Forbes noted, Vergara’s 2017-2018 pay was 73 percent more than the $24.5 million Kaley Cuoco picked up to rank No. 2 on the actress list.  But 95 percent of Cuoco’s pay is from “The Big Bang Theory.” (Cuoco’s total is slightly less than the No. 1 on the actor list, her “Big Bang Theory” co-star Jim Parsons.)

And despite all the hullabaloo about Ellen Pompeo’s new contract for “Grey’s Anatomy” making her the highest-paid TV actress, she’s actually No. 3.

    The World’s Highest-Paid Actresses 2018:

“Scandal” is now over, Perrette has left “NCIS,” and both “Homeland” and “The Big Bang Theory” have announced they are ending soon. So this list, like the men’s list, is going to break wide open in the next couple of years.

Andrew Lincoln Makes List of World’s Highest-Paid TV Actors for Final ‘Walking Dead’ Season

    AMC

Andrew Lincoln has joined Forbes‘ list of the 10 highest-paid TV actors for the first time.

That time coincides with 1) his final season — only five episodes — of “The Walking Dead“; and 2) Kevin Spacey being dumped from “House of Cards.”

As Forbes noted, the only actor on the 2018 list to drop off the previous year’s ranking is Kevin Spacey, who was axed from his lead role of Frank Underwood in the final season of “House of Cards.”

It’s possible that if Spacey hadn’t been called out for so many alleged misdeeds, and filmed his final season, he would’ve taken Lincoln’s spot.

Apparently Andrew Lincoln (Rick Grimes) made $11 million for his five episodes of “The Walking Dead” Season 9. Forbes suspects Norman Reedus (Daryl Dixon) will replace Andrew Lincoln on this list next year, since Reedus reportedly negotiated a raise to stay on after Lincoln leaves.

The ranking charts earnings from June 2017 to June 2018. Forbes said the 10 actors on this list made a combined $181 million, down from $185 million in the same period last year. It really is tough out there for men!

Most of these actors are familiar from making this list every year for their high-rated comedy series:

    The World’s Highest-Paid Actors 2018

    No. 10. Andrew Lincoln

    “The Walking Dead”

That list is going to break wide open once “The Big Bang Theory” and “Modern Family” end. TBBT is ending after Season 12, so we’ll see how this ranking shakes up after that.

    CBS

“The Walking Dead” has long been the most-watched and highest-rated cable show, but it has taken MAJOR hits in the past couple of years. This year, so far, is TWD’s lowest-rated yet in that advertiser-coveted 18-49 demographic.

AMC has already revealed Andrew Lincoln’s final episode airs in early November. It’s possible the show will slide even further into ratings oblivion without him. Then again, the hardcore fans who watch every week seem to be sticking with it to the end. As long as they stick around, AMC may continue long into the double digit seasons.

‘The Big Bang Theory’: Jim Parsons’s Decision Not to Return Prompted Show’s End: Report

Jerry O'Connell and Jim Parsons in The Big Bang Theory
    CBS

Fans of “The Big Bang Theory” got sad news Wednesday when word came that Season 12 would be the show’s last, and now they’re left wondering why.

A new Deadline report says the decision was made after star Jim Parsons told Chuck Lorre, one of the show’s creators and executive producers, that he planned to move on. The actor reportedly broke the news on Friday and stood firm on his decision over the weekend, spelling the end of the series. As Deadline notes, Lorre had previously indicated that the sitcom wouldn’t continue if Parsons, Johnny Galecki, or Kaley Cuoco chose not to return.

The rest of the people who work on the show reportedly learned that the show is ending on Wednesday, and Deadline’s sources say Parsons spoke to the entire cast and was “tearful.” (CBS declined to comment on the news, and Moviefone had not heard back from Parsons’s rep at the time of publishing.) They’ve been together for 11 seasons already, so it’s not surprising that it was a hard announcement for him to make.

Cuoco shared in an Instagram post that her heart was “broken,” but she was careful to note that it would have been no matter when “The Big Bang Theory” ended. As for Parsons, he was having a hard time, too. He wrote a lengthy post that expressed his gratitude for all the people who have worked on the show.

“I will miss all of you and all of this more than I can say and more than I can know at this time,” he wrote in part.
