  • 2024 Screen Actors Guild Awards Winners

    • ‘Oppenheimer’ dominated the movie section of the 2024 SAG Awards.
    • In the TV categories, ‘The Bear’ and ‘Beef were predictable winners.
    • The show was carried by Netflix for the first time.

    This year’s Screen Actors Guild Awards ceremony happened Saturday evening, and while they’re extremely limited in their Oscar prognostication (since this is all about acting), there were still few surprises, but shared love among a variety of movies and shows.

    Perhaps the most unusual element was the venue –– not the location, but the fact that it is being carried live via Netflix after years on broadcast cable.

    The show itself had some fun elements –– like the Emmys, it opted for a number of reunions from much-loved shows and movies, including ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ (Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep and Emily Blunt), ‘The Lord of the Rings’ Elijah Wood and Sean Astin, and the casts of ‘Breaking Bad’ and ‘Modern Family’, among others.

    On the movie front, ‘Oppenheimer’ and ‘Barbie’ led the nominations, with the former taking Motion Picture Cast, Male Actor in a Leading Role for Cillian Murphy (does this point to him taking the Oscar instead of ‘The Holdovers’ Paul Giamatti?) and Male Actor in a Supporting Role for Robert Downey Jr. (who is a big Oscar favorite for playing Lewis Strauss in Christopher Nolan’s film). “Why me? Why now? Why do things seem to be going my way?,” RDJ quipped. “Unlike my fellow nominees, I will never grow tired from the sound of my own voice….”

    ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ only saw Lily Gladstone winning another award as Female Actor in a Lead Role, while ‘The Holdovers’ Da’Vine Joy Randolph added Female Actor in a Supporting Role to her considerable collection, pointing to her surely nabbing an Oscar next month.

    TV-wise, there were even fewer shockers since the delayed Emmys and other shows had featured many of the same winners. So ‘The Bear’ duo Jeremy Allen White and Ayo Edebiri once again took the stage to collect trophies (both deserving winners, even though the debate remains as to whether the tension-filled show is truly a comedy), as well as being part of the series wining the Comedy ensemble award. ‘Succession’ meanwhile, nabbed the Drama Ensemble trophy.

    In other no-real-surprise news, Ali Wong and Steven Yeun both won for ‘Beef’.

    A mild surprise given what has happened so far? Pedro Pascal took Male Actor in a Drama Series for ‘The Last of Us’, beating out ‘Succession’s Kieran Culkin. Pascal was typically charming, admitting he’d thought he was allowed to get a little drunk and concerned he was making a fool of himself.

    There is another casting change afoot for Marvel’s ‘Thunderbolts’ movie. Having already lost ‘Beef’/‘Minari’ actor to a busy schedule (with ‘Top Gun: Maverick’s Lewis Pullman reportedly making a deal to replace him as the character of Sentry), this time it’s ‘The Bear’s Ayo Edebiri discovering her busy schedule can no longer accommodate the movie’s shoot.

    Edebiri, who has become hugely in demand thanks to her award-winning performance on the culinary drama, will be replaced by Geraldine Viswanathan, known for ‘Blockers’ and recent Apple TV+ movie ‘The Beanie Bubble’.

    What is the ‘Thunderbolts’ movie?

    Though not a 1:1 match, the Thunderbolts are effectively Marvel’s version of The Suicide Squad: a group of villains –– or at least anti-heroes –– brought together by third-party schemers in a possibly ill-advised attempt to turn them into a force for good.

    In Marvel’s case, they were originally assembled by Baron Zemo and the Masters Of Evil and have sometimes been linked to Hulk regular General Thaddeus ‘Thunderbolt’ Ross (hence the name). They made their debut in the pages of ‘The Incredible Hulk’ in 1996, introduced by writer and artist team Peter David and Mike Deodato. They continued to their own series the same year, created by Kurt Busiek and Mark Bagley, and have been brought back with a bunch of alternative line-ups in comics ever since.

    Who is in the Thunderbolts movie so far?

    The vast majority of the cast were announced back in 2022 at Disney’s D23 event: Bucky Barnes (formerly The Winter Soldier), played by Sebastian Stan, is a key figure alongside Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova, Olga Kurylenko’s Antonia Dreykov/Taskmaster and David Harbour’s Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian, those three having been introduced in ‘Black Widow’.

    Then there’s John Walker, AKA US Agent, played by Wyatt Russell and first seen in ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’ and Hannah John-Kamen’s Ava Starr, the phasing character known as Ghost, who debuted in ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp’.

    As for those overseeing the team, we have Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, AKA Val, played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who was also introduced in the ‘Falcon’ series and has since cropped up in the likes of ‘Black Widow’ and ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’. We also have Thaddeus Ross –– last seen in ‘Black Widow’ and played since ‘The Incredible Hulk’ by William Hurt. But because of the actor’s death in 2022, Marvel has had to recast the role, tapping genre icon Harrison Ford to take over.

    Ross is reportedly the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s current President of the US (at least in ‘Captain America: New World Order’) so that’ll likely factor in.

    Edebiri had been filling an unknown role, which Viswanathan will take over. Deadline’ s report offers no details as to the part. The actor will next be seen in Ethan Coen’s ‘Drive-Away Dolls’ , due in theaters on February 23rd.

    Who is making ‘Thunderbolts’?

    Jake Schreier (‘Beef’) is directing the film based on a script by Eric Pearson and Lee Sung Jin (the Emmy-winning creator of ‘Beef’).

    When will ‘Thunderbolts’ be in theaters?

    ‘Thunderbolts’ is currently scheduled for release on July 25th, 2025. But we’re still waiting to see if that changes.

    • The 75th Emmy Awards ceremony was broadcast Monday night.
    • ‘Succession’, ‘Beef’ and ‘The Bear’ scooped a lot of awards.
    • The show also brought out casts from veteran series.

    While there have been a number of award ceremonies (the Directors Guild, the Critics Choice Association) that feature television among their trophies, Monday night was the big one for TV –– the 75th Emmys. Delayed from September last year (so these are technically the 2023 Emmys), they were finally handed out Monday night.

    In the lead up to the award, there were questions as to whether there would be a lot of repeat winners, including ‘Ted Lasso’, which has done well in recent years, and whether that, along with ‘Succession’, would benefit from voters looking to reward them for their final seasons (neither show, let’s be honest has needed it, but the fact remains).

    ‘Succession’ once again dominated, along with ‘Beef’ (in limited series categories) and ‘The Bear’, the three shows winning multiple awards, to no-one’s surprise.

    Anthony Anderson proved to be an engaged and entertaining host, kicking things off with a tribute to the television he loved growing up and popping up to move things along from time to time (at one point donning an ‘American Horror Story’ gimp suit), with his mother, Doris, acting as a human alternative to play off music (also used judiciously so the joke never wore thin).

    The speeches, for the most part, were short and sweet. And in a presenting moment, Pedro Pascal continued the comedy feud with ‘Succession’s Kieran Culkin (who had told his category competitor to “suck it” while accepting the Golden Globe), blaming Culkin for his recent shoulder injury in a sweary moment that the broadcast muted.

    Aside from the awards, the show looked to generate buzz by reuniting the casts of some classic and iconic shows including ‘Cheers’, ‘Game of Thrones’ and ‘Grey’s Anatomy’, the latter an odd once since it’s still on the air (but everyone still thinks of the original lineup).

    Those were much more of a mixed bag –– the ‘Cheers’ gang were game and warm, but does it really count as a ‘Game of Thrones’ reunion when it’s just Peter Dinklage?

    • In the TV categories, ‘Succession’ and ‘The Bear’ dominated again.
    • The ceremony will screen on Netflix this year.

    The Screen Actors Guild Awards mark an important pre-Oscars date in the awards season calendar. Unlike, say, the Golden Globes, they represent what performers are likely to vote for in terms of their peers when it comes to the big night.

    It’s not a 1:1 correlation every time, but the same faces do often tend to show up on both stages. And, as seems to have become tradition, there are some definite front-runners. The likes of Bradley Cooper, Paul Giamatti, Colman Domingo, Annette Bening, Lily Gladstone, and Margot Robbie are all in contention again, while the ensemble prize features such repeat titles as ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’, ‘American Fiction’ and ‘Barbie’.

    Meanwhile, the TV side sees a return for a veteran awards-scooper – Tony Shalhoub, who has won many prizes for his work in both ‘Monk’ and ‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’. He’s back this year for TV movie ‘Mr. Monk’s Last Case’.

    Netflix’s ‘Beef’, meanwhile, has been scoring plenty of kudos, and the cast is back on the lists for these awards. Still, big hitters such as ‘Succession’, ‘The Bear’ and ‘Ted Lasso’ are also present (with ‘Succession’ and ‘Ted Lasso’ carrying the weight of the last chance to reward them now they’ve concluded).

    You can imagine that certain nominees must be using up original ways to react to their various nominations, but the likes of Paul Giamatti and Emma Stone still found something to say when called up by Variety.

    Here’s what Giamatti said about his nomination for ‘The Holdovers’:

    “I’m perpetually in a state of shock throughout this. I’m just kind of amazed to be singled out this way. It’s fantastic. It’s awesome. But it’s always just surprised, but very pleasantly surprised.”

    This is what Stone had to say:

    ‘Ted Lasso’s Brett Goldstein, who plays the gruff Roy Kent, had a typically sweary response:

    “F*** me! It’s such a lovely and huge honor to be nominated with these absolute screen legends, including my favorite captain! First SAG pulls together a historic deal, and now this! Is there nothing they can’t do?! It means so f***ing much to even be considered in this conversation by my fellow actors. Thank you, thank you, thank you.     • The show struggled to reach past glories.

    If you were looking for dramatic surprises at this year’s Golden Globe awards, which has somewhat distanced itself from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, an organization as much about damage control as it is journalism after a variety of scandals and controversies surrounding it, you would be disappointed. Except perhaps that ‘Barbie’ only took home two awards.

    It was definitely ‘Oppenheimer’s night, not only notching the first directing Golden Globe (following six nominations) for Christopher Nolan, Best Actor (drama) for Cillian Murphy, Best Supporting Actor (Robert Downey Jr.), Best Original Score and Best Picture (Drama).

    ‘The Holdovers’, ‘Anatomy of a Fall’ and ‘Barbie’ won two awards each, with the year’s biggest hit making do with an original song for Billie Eilish and Finneas’ “What was I Made For?” and the new, Cinematic and Box Office Achievement gong.

    The small screen awards were even less of a shock –– ‘Succession’ and ‘The Bear’ gobbled up the lion’s share of trophies, while Netflix’s ‘Beef’ had a good night, taking home Best Limited Series, Anthology Series or a Motion Picture Made for Television, with awards for stars Steven Yeun and Ali Wong. The latter is the first actress of Asian descent to win in her category (Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Limited Series, Anthology Series or a Motion Picture Made for Television).

    While recent changes and corporate ownership of the organization have seen the Hollywood Foreign Press seemingly lean into the ‘shadowy’ part of ‘shadowy cabal’ (with even less transparency about how the Golden Globes are voted upon and questions about conflict of interest), their awards remain part of the season.

    After years of appearing on NBC in a rich deal, the Globes are on the move to CBS this year for considerably less cash.

    This season’s Globes nominations are somewhat understandably dominated by the big dogs of this year’s cinema, ‘Barbie’ and ‘Oppenheimer’, with the former tying the record for the second-highest number of nominations (for the record, it’s in line with 1972’s ‘Cabaret’).

    Other expected titles? Martin Scorsese’s prestige-y ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ and Alexander Payne’s ‘The Holdovers’, which seems destined to become a festive favorite.

    And in a stab at appealing to an even wider audience, the Globes also introduced a category celebrating big box office winners, meaning that Taylor Swift’s successful ‘Eras Tour‘ movie also made the cut this year.

    There were also the usual movies left off the list –– Michael Mann’s ‘Ferrari’, despite positive reviews, couldn’t find space in the Globes’ garage, while ‘The Color Purple’ didn’t make the musical/comedy cut (though some of its cast got nominations).

  • ‘The Bear’ Renewed for Season 3

    • ‘The Bear’ has been a big success for FX
    • FX and Hulu have renewed the show for a third season.
    • Production should hopefully start once the actors can return to work.

    One of the clear breakout hits of 2022 was ‘The Bear’, which starred Jeremy Allen White as Carmen ‘Carmy’ Berzatto, a trained chef struggling to adapt to life running his family’s chaotic Chicago sandwich joint.

    It drew a big audience, was even bigger in Season 2 and saw and plenty of buzz, with awards following for both its cast and the show.

    No surprise, then, at the news that FX and Hulu are renewing the series for a third season.

    What’s the story of ‘The Bear’?

    The first season follows Carmy (White), a young chef from the fine-dining world who comes home to Chicago to run his family sandwich shop after his brother’s suicide. Carmy must balance the realities of small-business ownership, his strong-willed and recalcitrant kitchen staff and his strained familial relationships, all while grappling with the impact of his brother’s death.

    Season two follows the gang as they transform their grimy sandwich joint into a next-level spot. As they stripped the restaurant down to its bones, the crew undertook transformational journeys of their own, each forced to confront the past and reckon with who they want to be in the future.

    Who else is in ‘The Bear’?

    Alongside White, the cast includes Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Ayo Edebiri, Abby Elliott, Lionel Boyce and Liza Colón-Zayas. Matty Matheson was also upped for season 2, while Edwin Lee Gibson, Corey Hendrix, Oliver Platt, and Jon Bernthal.

    In terms of recurring cast, José Cervantes, Richard Esteras, Carmen Christopher, Chris Witaske, Joel McHale, Jamie Lee Curtis, Gillian Jacobs, Robert Townsend, Molly Gordon, Alex Moffat, Ricky Staffieri, Mitra Jouhari and Maura Kidwell have all appeared in more than one episode.

    And in a casting coup alongside Curtis, a flashback episode of Season 2 also featured Bob Odenkirk, while Will Poulter and Olivia Colman appeared in other episodes.

    ‘The Bear’ has been so successful because it blends the chaos and tension involved in the culinary world with some well-crafted character comedy and some delicious looking food items with every detail painstakingly researched.

  • ‘Succession’, ‘The White Lotus’ and More Lead the 2023 Emmy Nominees

    The 2023 Emmy Award nominees were announced this morning during a virtual event hosted by actor Yvette Nicole Brown and TV Academy chair Frank Scherma.

    This year’s list is the typical blend of returning favorites (‘Succession’, ‘Ted Lasso’, ‘Abbott Elementary’) and some new breakthroughs ‘Beef’, ‘Wednesday’ and two ‘Star Wars’ shows, ‘Andor’ and ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’ –– the latter more of a surprise since it received mixed reviews.

    Steps forward for the nominee lists

    The biggest changes this year were positive forward movement for Asian and Latino representation, with the likes of ‘Beef’, ‘Wednesday’s Jenna Ortega and ‘The Last of Us’ Pedro Pascal breaking through in various categories.

    There were, as always, surprises ––no sign of Harrison Ford for ‘Shrinking’ or anything for ‘Yellowstone’, but Keri Russell made it in for ‘The Diplomat’.

    Ayo Edebiri has gained a lot of attention lately for her role as driven chef Sydney Adamu in FX’s ‘The Bear’, for which she has been nominated for several awards and won some trophies.

    Which has led to her getting a call from the Marvel team, and now Deadline reports that Edebiri has been recruited for the ‘Thunderbolts’ cast.

    Originally confirmed as in development by Marvel boss Kevin Feige at the company’s 2022 San Diego Comic-Con panel, the main casting line-up was later announced at Disney’s D23 event last September.

    It isn’t an exact match, but the simple way of explaining the Thunderbolts is that they’re Marvel’s version of The Suicide Squad: a group of villains––or at least anti-heroes––brought together by third-party schemers in a possibly ill-advised attempt to turn them into a force for good.

    In Marvel’s case, they were originally assembled by Baron Zemo and the Masters Of Evil and have sometimes been linked to Hulk regular General Thaddeus ‘Thunderbolt’ Ross (hence the name). They made their debut in the pages of ‘The Incredible Hulk’ in 1996, introduced by writer and artist team Peter David and Mike Deodato. They continued to their own series the same year, created by Kurt Busiek and Mark Bagley, and have been brought back with a bunch of alternative line-ups in comics ever since.

    For the movie we know (most of) the characters who will be showing up: Bucky Barnes (formerly The Winter Soldier), played by Sebastian Stan, is a key figure alongside Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova, Olga Kurylenko’s Antonia Dreykov/Taskmaster and David Harbour’s Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian, those three having been introduced in ‘Black Widow’.

    Then there’s John Walker, AKA US Agent, played by Wyatt Russell and first seen in ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’ and Hannah John-Kamen’s Ava Starr, the phasing character known as Ghost, who debuted in ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp’.

    As for those overseeing the team, we have Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, AKA Val, played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who was also introduced in the ‘Falcon’ series and has since cropped up in the likes of ‘Black Widow’ and ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’. We also have Thaddeus Ross––last seen in ‘Black Widow’ and played since ‘The Incredible Hulk’ by William Hurt. But because of the actor’s death last year, Marvel has had to recast the role, tapping genre icon Harrison Ford to take over. It’s unknown what position Ross will have in the new movie––the former General was Secretary of State in ‘Captain America: Civil War’.

    Given Marvel’s typical shroud of secrecy, nothing is yet known about how Edebiri will fit into the story or what character she’s playing. She could be a character drawn from the comics, but even if that’s the case, her backstory could be changed for the film’s story.

    So far, all that is really confirmed about the film beyond the main cast is the presence of ‘Paper Towns’ and ‘Robot and Frank’ director Jake Schreier and ‘Black Widow’ writer Eric Pearson providing the script.

    ‘Thunderbolts’ will be in theaters on July 26th next year.

  • ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’ and ‘Banshees of Inisherin’ Lead SAG Nominations

    With the Golden Globes in the rear view, attention turned to the awards––or at least their nomination announcement––chosen exclusively by Hollywood’s acting community, the Screen Actors Guild awards.

    Because of the large size of the voting body, the SAG awards tend to be a decent pointer to who could be looking at an Oscar for acting, or at the very least, a nomination.

    So you’ve got to feel sorry for Tom Cruise today, as neither he nor his ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ cast made the list. Though it does seem more likely that the movie has a shot at a Best Picture nomination and plenty of technical nods at the Academy Awards, the chatter about Cruise’s performance and the warm reception for the likes of Glenn Powell and the other ‘Top Gun’ ensemble hasn’t translated into acting kudos here.

    Many of the main categories are the expected batch of returning names (Cate Blanchett, Viola Davis for example) plus the breakthroughs such as ‘Elvis’ Austin Butler and ‘Till’s Danielle Deadwyler. ‘The Banshees of Inisherin’, led by cast members Brendan Gleeson, Colin Farrell, Kerry Condon and Barry Keoghan, is a clear favorite and seems likely to pick up several trophies.

    Also dominating categories as it has in other awards nomination list is ‘Everything Everywhere All At Once’, with most of the main cast scoring nods this time. Adam Sandler is also something of a surprise, though his performance in basketball drama ‘Hustle’ has won plenty of praise.

    Steven Spielberg’s ‘The Fabelmans’ was among the ensemble nods, and Paul Dano was nominated for his leading role, but there was something of a shock as Michelle Williams, whose work as a character based on the director’s mother has been both nominated and won elsewhere but didn’t even crack the nominations here.

    Brendan Fraser continues to score support for his performance in ‘The Whale’, which also saw a nomination for co-star Hong Chau, but surprisingly not for its ensemble, which also includes Samantha Morton and Sadie Sink.

    Conversely, ‘Babylon’ notched zero nominations for the separate likes of Margot Robbie and Brad Pitt (who have appeared on other lists) but did appear in the ensemble section. It’s perhaps telling that ‘Babylon’, which has largely fizzled at the box office, is having a quieter awards season despite being a more recent release than some of its competition.

    On the TV side of the list, there were also few surprises, though Taylor Sheridan’s ‘Yellowstone’ casts are starting to make more of an impact.

    But while it was good to see the nominations for ‘Better Call Saul, it remains an outright crime that Rhea Seehorn isn’t on the list for her work as Kim Wexler.

    Much like the movies, there was the standard mix of people who have won plenty of awards before (Julia Garner of ‘Ozark’, for example, or the ‘Only Murders in the Building’ cast) and those whose shows are brand new ‘The Bear’, which has been an awards favorite so far.
